When galactic discs settle and become massive enough, they are able to form stellar bars. These non-axisymmetric structures induce shocks in the gas, causing it to flow to the centre where nuclear structures, such as nuclear discs and rings, are formed. Previous theoretical and observational studies have hinted at the co-evolution of bars and nuclear discs, suggesting that nuclear discs grow "inside-out", thereby proposing that smaller discs live in younger bars. Nevertheless, it remains unclear how the bar and the nuclear structures form and evolve with time. The smallest nuclear discs discovered to date tend to be larger than $\sim200~\rm{pc}$, even though some theoretical studies find that when nuclear discs form they can be much smaller. Using MUSE archival data, we report for the first time two extragalactic nuclear discs with radius sizes below $100~\rm{pc}$. Additionally, our estimations reveal the youngest bars found to date. We estimate that the bars in these galaxies formed $4.50^{+1.60}_{-1.10}\rm{(sys)}^{+1.00}_{-0.75}\rm{(stat)}$ and $0.7^{+2.60}\rm{(sys)}^{+0.05}_{-0.05}\rm{(stat)}~\rm{Gyr}$ ago, for NGC\,289 and NGC\,1566, respectively. This suggests that at least some disc galaxies in the Local Universe may still be dynamically settling. By adding these results to previous findings in the literature, we retrieve a stronger correlation between nuclear disc size and bar length and we derive a tentative exponential growth scenario for nuclear discs.

The path towards robust near-infrared extensions of stellar population models involves the confrontation between empirical and synthetic stellar spectral libraries across the wavelength ranges of photospheric emission. [...] With its near-UV to near-IR coverage, the X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL) allows us to examine to what extent models succeed in reproducing stellar energy distributions (SEDs) and stellar absorption line spectra simultaneously. This study compares the stellar spectra of XSL with the PHOENIX spectra of the Göttingen Spectral Library. The comparison is carried out both separately in the three arms of the X-shooter spectrograph, and jointly across the whole spectrum.
When adopting the stellar parameters published with data release DR2 of XSL, we find that the SEDs of the models are consistent with those of the data at Teff > 5000 K. Below 5000 K, there are significant discrepancies in the SEDs. When leaving the stellar parameters free to adjust, satisfactory representations of the SEDs are obtained down to about 4000 K. However, in particular below 5000 K and in the UVB spectral range, strong local residuals associated with intermediate resolution spectral features are then seen; the necessity of a compromise between reproducing the line spectra and reproducing the SEDs leads to dispersion between the parameters favored by various spectral ranges. We describe the main trends observed and we point out localized offsets between the parameters preferred in this global fit to the SEDs and the parameters in DR2. These depend in a complex way on position in the HR diagram (HRD). We estimate the effect of the offsets on bolometric corrections as a function of position in the HRD and use this for a brief discussion of their impact on the studies of stellar populations. The X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL) is an empirical stellar library at medium spectral resolution covering the wavelength range from 3000 Åto 24 800 Å. This library aims to provide a benchmark for stellar population studies. In this work, we present a uniform set of stellar atmospheric parameters, effective temperatures, surface gravities, and iron abundances for 754 spectra of 616 XSL stars. We used the full-spectrum fitting package ULySS with the empirical MILES library as reference to fit the ultraviolet-blue (UVB) and visible (VIS) spectra. We tested the internal consistency and we compared our results with compilations from the literature. The stars cover a range of effective temperature 2900 < Teff < 38 000 K, surface gravity 0 < log g < 5.7, and iron abundance -2.5 < [Fe/H] < +1.0, with a couple of stars extending down to [Fe/H] = -3.9. The precisions of the measurements for the G- and K-type stars are 0.9%, 0.14, and 0.06 in Teff, log g, and [Fe/H], respectively. For the cool giants with log g < 1, the precisions are 2.1%, 0.21, and 0.22, and for the other cool stars these values are 1%, 0.14, and 0.10. For the hotter stars (Teff > 6500 K), these values are 2.6%, 0.20, and 0.10 for the three parameters.

We present a sample of 33 Balmer Break Galaxies (BBGs) selected as HST/F160W dropouts in the deepest CANDELS/GOODS fields ($H\gtrsim27.3$~mag) but relatively bright in {\it Spitzer}/IRAC ($[3.6],[4.5]<24.5$~mag), implying red colors (median and quartiles: $\langle H-[3.6]\rangle=3.1^{3.4}_{2.8}$\,mag). Half of these BBGs are newly identified sources. Our BBGs are massive ($\langle \log(\rm{M}/\rm{M}_\odot)\rangle=10.8$) high redshift ($\langle z\rangle=4.8$) dusty ($\langle \rm{A(V)}\rangle=2.0$~mag) galaxies. The SEDs of half of our sample indicate that they are star-forming galaxies with typical specific SFRs 0.5-1.0~Gyr$^{-1}$, qualifying them as main sequence (MS) galaxies at $3<z<6$. One third of those SEDs indicates the presence of prominent emission lines (H$β$+$[OIII]$, H$α$$+$[NII]) boosting the IRAC fluxes and red colors. Approximately 20\% of the BBGs are very dusty ($\rm{A(V)}\sim2.5$~mag) starbursts with strong mid-to-far infrared detections and extreme SFRs ($\rm{SFR}>10^{3}\,\rm{M}_\odot/yr$) that place them above the MS. The rest, 30\%, are post-starbursts or quiescent galaxies located $>2σ$ below the MS with mass-weighted ages older than 700~Myr. Only 2 of the 33 galaxies are X-ray detected AGN with optical/near-infrared SEDs dominated by stellar emission, but the presence of obscured AGN in the rest of sources cannot be discarded. Our sample accounts for 8\% of the total number density of $\log(\rm{M}/\rm{M}_\odot)>10$ galaxies at $z>3$, but it is a significant contributor (30\%) to the general population of red $\log(\rm{M}/\rm{M}_\odot)>11$ galaxies at $4<z<6$. Finally, our results point out that 1 of every 30 massive $\log(\rm{M}/\rm{M}_\odot)>11$ galaxies in the local Universe was assembled in the first 1.5~Gyr after the Big Bang, a fraction that is not reproduced by state-of-the-art galaxy formation simulations.

We present here a brief summary of the status of the on-going CALIFA survey with an em- phasis on the results that have been recently published. In particular, we make a summary of the most relevant results found regarding the properties of Hii regions discovered using this survey, and the evidence uncovered for an inside-out growth of galaxies. In particular, we present an updated version of our results on the exploration of the Mass-Metallicity relation using spatial resolved information, with almost the double number of objects analysed, and an enlarged number of galaxies in the lower-mass range. We confirm our previous results that shows a lack of secondary relation with the SFR.
