The electron-hole pair created via photon absorption in organic photoconversion systems must overcome the Coulomb attraction to achieve long-range charge separation. We show that this process is facilitated through the formation of excited, delocalized band states. In our experiments on organic photovoltaic cells, these states were accessed for a short time (<1ps) via IR optical excitation of electron-hole pairs bound at the heterojunction. Atomistic modelling showed that the IR photons promote bound charge pairs to delocalised band states, similar to those formed just after singlet exciton dissociation, which indicates that such states act as the gateway for charge separation. Our results suggest that charge separation in efficient organic photoconversion systems, occurs through hot-state charge delocalisation rather than energy-gradient-driven intermolecular hop**.

We study the absorption spectra of the yellow excitons in Cu$_2$O in high magnetic fields using polarization-resolved optical absorption measurements with a high frequency resolution. We show that the symmetry of the yellow exciton results in unusual selection rules for the optical absorption of polarized light and that the mixing of ortho- and para- excitons in magnetic field is important. Our calculation of the energies of the yellow exciton series in an arbitrary magnetic field gives an excellent fit to experimental data and allows us to understand the complex structure of excitonic levels and their magnetic field dependence, which resolves the old-standing disagreement between the results of optical absorption and cyclotron resonance measurements.

We use broadband ultra-fast pump-probe spectroscopy in the visible range to study the lowest excitations across the Mott-Hubbard gap in the orbitally ordered insulator YVO3. Separating thermal and non-thermal contributions to the optical transients, we show that the total spectral weight of the two lowest peaks is conserved, demonstrating that both excitations correspond to the same multiplet. The pump-induced transfer of spectral weight between the two peaks reveals that the low-energy one is a Hubbard exciton, i.e. a resonance or bound state between a doublon and a holon. Finally, we speculate that the pump-driven spin-disorder can be used to quantify the kinetic energy gain of the excitons in the ferromagnetic phase.

We report the hydrogenation of single and bilayer graphene by an argon-hydrogen plasma produced in a reactive ion etching (RIE) system. Electronic transport measurements in combination with Raman spectroscopy are used to link the electric mean free path to the optically extracted defect concentration. We emphasize the role of the self-bias of the graphene in suppressing the erosion of the akes during plasma processing. We show that under the chosen plasma conditions the process does not introduce considerable damage to the graphene sheet and that hydrogenation occurs primarily due to the hydrogen ions from the plasma and not due to fragmentation of water adsorbates on the graphene surface by highly accelerated plasma electrons. For this reason the hydrogenation level can be precisely controlled. The hydrogenation process presented here can be easily implemented in any RIE plasma system.

The clusters are well isolated from the bulk and are superparamagnetic below 50 K. In single crystals various defects with lower symmetry are also observed. Spin-lattice relaxation broadens the bulk ESR beyond observability. This strong spin relaxation is unexpected above the charge transfer transition and is attributed to a mixing of the Mn3+ - Fe2+ state into the prevalent Mn2+ - Fe3+ state.

Pulsed field magnetization measurements extend the typical magnetic staircase of CuFeO2 at various temperatures, demonstrating the persistence of the recently discovered high field metamagnetic transition up to Tn2 ~ 11 K in both field configurations. An extension of the previously introduced phenomenological spin model used to describe the high field magnetization process (Phys. Rev. B, 80, 012406 (2009)) is applied to each of the consecutive low-field commensurate spin structures, yielding a semi-quantitative simulation and intuitive description of the entire experimental magnetization process in both relevant field directions with a single set of parameters.

We report experimental results on the heat conductivity κof the S=1/2 spin chain compounds TiOBr and TiOCl for temperatures 5K<T<300K and magnetic fields up to 14. Surprisingly, we find no evidence of a significant magnetic contribution to κ, which is in stark contrast to recent results on S=1/2 spin chain cuprates. Despite this unexpected result, the thus predominantly phononic heat conductivity of these spin-Peierls compounds exhibits a very unusual behavior. In particular, we observe strong anomalies at the phase transitions Tc1 and Tc2. Moreover, we find an overall but anisotropic suppression of κin the intermediate phase which extends even to temperatures higher than Tc2. An external magnetic field causes a slight downshift of the transition at Tc1 and enhances the suppression of κup to Tc2. We interprete our findings in terms of strong spin-phonon coupling and phonon scattering arising from spin-driven lattice distortions.

We report a study of suppressed spin dephasing for quasi-one-dimensional electron ensembles in wires etched into a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction system. Time-resolved Kerr-rotation measurements show a suppression that is most pronounced for wires along the [110] crystal direction. This is the fingerprint of a suppression that is enhanced due to a strong anisotropy in spin-orbit fields that can occur when the Rashba and Dresselhaus contributions are engineered to cancel each other. A surprising observation is that this mechanisms for suppressing spin dephasing is not only effective for electrons in the heterojunction quantum well, but also for electrons in a deeper bulk layer.

We present time-resolved Kerr rotation measurements of electron spin dynamics in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction system that contains a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). Due to the complex layer structure of this material the Kerr rotation signals contain information from electron spins in three different layers: the 2DEG layer, a GaAs epilayer in the heterostructure, and the underlying GaAs substrate. The 2DEG electrons can be observed at low pump intensities, using that they have a less negative g-factor than electrons in bulk GaAs regions. At high pump intensities, the Kerr signals from the GaAs epilayer and the substrate can be distinguished when using a barrier between the two layers that blocks intermixing of the two electron populations. This allows for stronger pum** of the epilayer, which results in a shift of the effective g-factor. Thus, three populations can be distinguished using differences in g-factor. We support this interpretation by studying how the spin dynamics of each population has its unique dependence on temperature, and how they correlate with time-resolved reflectance signals.

Virtually complete isotropic behavior is retrieved only above this transition, indicating the high-field recovery of the undistorted triangular lattice. The observed phonon-assisted luminescence yields information on the statistical distribution of occupied states. Additional time-resolved experiments provide a unique opportunity to directly determine the time evolution of the thermodynamical properties of the paraexciton gas. Because the lifetime of paraexciton is hardly affected by the optical activation in a strong magnetic field, this opens new possibilities for studies aiming at Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons in bulk semiconductors.

When such a phase transition is stimulated by light or other sudden perturbations the solid evolves along a non-equilibrium pathway of which the underlying physics is poorly understood. Here we use picosecond Raman scattering to study the photo-induced ultrafast dynamics in Peierls distorted Antimony. We find evidence for an ultrafast non-thermal reversible structural phase transition. Most surprisingly, we find evidence that this transition evolves toward a lower symmetry, in contrast to the commonly accepted rhombohedral-to-simple cubic transition path. Our study demonstrates the feasibility of ultrafast Raman scattering symmetry analysis of photo-induced non-thermal transient phases.

Many Prussian Blue Analogues are known to show a thermally induced phase transition close to room temperature and a reversible, photo-induced phase transition at low temperatures. This work reports on magnetic measurements, X-ray photoemission and Raman spectroscopy on a particular class of these molecular heterobimetallic systems, specifically on Rb0.81Mn[Fe(CN)6]0.95_1.24H2O, Rb0.97Mn[Fe(CN)6]0.98_1.03H2O and Rb0.70Cu0.22Mn0.78[Fe(CN)6]0.86_2.05H2O, to investigate these transition phenomena both in the bulk of the material and at the sample surface. Results indicate a high degree of charge transfer in the bulk, while a substantially reduced conversion is found at the sample surface, even in case of a near perfect (Rb:Mn:Fe=1:1:1) stoichiometry. Thus, the intrinsic incompleteness of the charge transfer transition in these materials is found to be primarily due to surface reconstruction. Substitution of a large fraction of charge transfer active Mn ions by charge transfer inactive Cu ions leads to a proportional conversion reduction with respect to the maximum conversion that is still stoichiometrically possible and shows the charge transfer capability of metal centers to be quite robust upon inclusion of a neighboring impurity. Additionally, a 532 nm photo-induced metastable state, reminiscent of the high temperature Fe(III)Mn(II) ground state, is found at temperatures 50-100 K. The efficiency of photo-excitation to the metastable state is found to be maximized around 90 K. The photo-induced state is observed to relax to the low temperature Fe(II)Mn(III) ground state at a temperature of approximately 123 K.

Coupled with a pulsed laser source, the microscope is used to measure the time-resolved Kerr rotation response of semiconductor microstructures with ~1 micron spatial resolution. The microscope was designed to study spin transport, a critical issue in the field of spintronics. Magnetic measurements on single crystals of Gd2Ti2O7, Tb2Ti2O7, Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7 are used for characterization, while Raman spectroscopy and terahertz time domain spectroscopy are employed to probe the excitations of the materials. The lattice excitations are found to be analogous across the compounds over the whole temperature range investigated (295-4 K). The resulting full phononic characterization of the R2Ti2O7 pyrochlore structure is then used to identify crystal field excitations observed in the materials. Several crystal field excitations have been observed in Tb2Ti2O7 in Raman spectroscopy for the first time, among which all of the previously reported excitations. The presence of additional crystal field excitations, however, suggests the presence of two inequivalent Tb3+ sites in the low temperature structure. Furthermore, the crystal field level at approximately 13 cm-1 is found to be both Raman and dipole active, indicating broken inversion symmetry in the system and thus undermining its current symmetry interpretation. In addition, evidence is found for a significant crystal field-phonon coupling in Tb2Ti2O7. These findings call for a careful reassessment of the low temperature structure of Tb2Ti2O7, which may serve to improve its theoretical understanding.

The temperature and polarization dependent experiments reveal charge-coupled vibrational Raman features. The strongly temperature-dependent collective amplitudon mode in both materials differ by about 3 cm, thus revealing the role of alkali atom. We discus the observed vibrational features in terms of charge-density-wave ground state accompanied by change in the crystal symmetry. A frequency-kink in some modes seen in \bb between T = 80 K and 100 K supports the first-order lock-in transition, unlike \rb. The unusually sharp Raman lines(limited by the instrumental response) at very low temperatures and their temperature evolution suggests that the decay of the low energy phonons is strongly influenced by the presence of the temperature dependent charge density wave gap.

The sequence of phase transitions and the symmetry of in particular the low temperature incommensurate and spin-Peierls phases of the quasi one-dimensional inorganic spin-Peierls system TiOX (TiOBr and TiOCl) have been studied using inelastic light scattering experiments. The anomalous first-order character of the transition to the spin-Peierls phase is found to be a consequence of the different symmetries of the incommensurate and spin-Peierls (P$2_{1}/m$) phases.
The pressure dependence of the lowest transition temperature strongly suggests that magnetic interchain interactions play an important role in the formation of the spin-Peierls and the incommensurate phases. Finally, a comparison of Raman data on VOCl to the TiOX spectra shows that the high energy scattering observed previously has a phononic origin.

A combination of the two types of Kerr experiments, shows to be useful in extracting both the carrier lifetimes and spin dephasing times in a single experiment.

The charge density wave system K_0.3MoO_3 has been studied using variable energy pump-probe spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and inelastic light scattering. The observed transient reflectivity response exhibits quite a complex behavior, containing contributions due to quasi particle excitations, coherent amplitudons and phonons, and heating effects. The generation of coherent amplitudons is discussed in terms of relaxation of photo-excited quasi particles, and is found to be resonant with the interband plasmon frequency. Two additional coherent excitations observed in the transients are assigned to zone-folding modes of the charge density wave state.

Inelastic light scattering spectra of several members of the RFe3(BO3)4 family reveal a cascade of phase transitions as a function of temperature, starting with a structural, weakly first order, phase transition followed by two magnetic phase transitions. Those consist of the ordering of the Fe-spin sublattice revealed by all the compound, and a subsequent spin-reorientational transition for GdFe3(BO3)4. The Raman data evidence a strong coupling between the lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom in these borates. The Fe-sublattice ordering leads to a strong suppression of the low energy magnetic scattering, and a multiple peaked two-magnon scattering continuum is observed. Evidence for short-range correlations is found in the `paramagnetic' phase by the observation of a broad magnetic continuum in the Raman data, which persists up to surprisingly high temperatures.

Photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy has revealed a novel, highly efficient two-photon excitation method to produce a cold, uniformly distributed high density excitonic gas in bulk cuprous oxide. A study of the time evolution of the density, temperature and chemical potential of the exciton gas shows that the so called quantum saturation effect that prevents Bose-Einstein condensation of the ortho-exciton gas originates from an unfavorable ratio between the cooling and recombination rates. Oscillations observed in the temporal decay of the ortho-excitonic luminescence intensity are discussed in terms of polaritonic beating. We present the semiclassical description of polaritonic oscillations in linear and non-linear optical processes.

The low-temperature structure determination gives new insight into the weakly first-order structural phase transition at 156 K and into the related Raman phonon anomalies. The discovery of two inequivalent iron chains in the low temperature structure provide new point of view on the low-temperature magnetic properties.

Optical and magneto-optical properties of YVO$_3$ single crystal were studied in FIR, visible, and UV regions. Two structural phase transitions at 75 K and 200 K were observed and established to be of the first and second order, respectively. The lattice has an orthorhombic $Pbnm$ symmetry both above 200 K as well as below 75 K, and is found to be dimerized monoclinic $Pb11$ in between. We identify YVO$_3$ as a Mott-Hubbard insulator with the optical gap of 1.6 eV. The electronic excitations in the visible spectrum are determined by three $d$-bands at 1.8, 2.4, and 3.3 eV, followed by the charge-transfer transitions at about 4 eV. The observed structure is in good agreement with LSDA+$U$ band structure calculations. By using ligand field considerations, we assigned these bands to the transitions to the $^4A_{2g}$, $^2E_{g} + ^2T_{1g}$, and $^2T_{2g}$ states. The strong temperature dependence of these bands is in agreement with the formation of orbital order. Despite the small net magnetic moment of 0.01 $μ_B$ per vanadium, the Kerr effect of the order of $0.01^\circ$ was observed for all three $d$-bands in the magnetically ordered phase $T_{\text{Néel}}<116 K$. A surprisingly strong enhancement of the Kerr effect was found below 75 K, reaching a maximum of $0.1^\circ$. The effect is ascribed to the non-vanishing net orbital magnetic moment.

The dimerized-incommensurate phase transition in the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO$_3$ is probed using multifrequency high-resolution electron spin resonance (ESR) technique, in magnetic fields up to 17 T. A field-induced development of the soliton-like incommensurate superstructure is clearly indicated as a pronounced increase of the ESR linewidth $ΔB$ (magnon excitations), with a $ΔB_{max}$ at $B_{c}\sim$ 13.8 T. The anomaly is explained in terms of the magnon-soliton scattering, and suggests that the soliton-like phase exists close to the boundary of the dimerized-incommensurate phase transition. In addition, magnetic excitation spectra in 0.8% Si-doped CuGeO$_3$ are studied. Suppression of the $ΔB$ anomaly observed in the doped samples suggests a collapse of the long-range-ordered soliton states upon do**, that is consistent with high-field neutron scattering experiments.
