We discuss the upper limit, $k_{\text{max}}$, of the transverse-momentum integration performed in the $k_t$-factorization formula. Based on explicit calculations in the Yukawa theory and the study of seminal papers, we argue that $k_{\text{max}}$ is equal to the factorization scale $μ_F$ used to factorize the cross section into an off-shell hard coefficient and a universal factor. There is consequently a relation between $k_{\text{max}}$ and the definition of unintegrated parton densities (UPDFs). The use of an inconsistent relation leads potentially to the overestimation of the cross section, which has been observed, e.g., in D-meson production. One of our conclusions is that UPDFs related to collinear PDFs by an integration up to $μ\sim Q$, where $Q$ is the hard scale and $μ$ the scale in the collinear PDFs, imply that $k_{\text{max}}^2 \sim Q^2$. Integrating the transverse-momentum significantly above may result in the overestimation of the cross section. On the opposite, for UPDFs related to the collinear ones by an integration of the transverse momentum up to infinity, any $k_{\text{max}}^2 > Q^2$ is fine.

Using the small-$x$ Improved Transverse Momentum Dependent factorization (ITMD), which, for a general two-to-two massless scattering can be proved within the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) theory for transverse momenta of particles greater than the saturation scale, we provide predictions for isolated forward photon and jet production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions within the planned ALICE FoCal detector acceptance. We study azimuthal correlations, $p_T$ spectra, as well as normalized ratios of proton-proton cross sections for different energies. The only TMD distribution needed for that process is the "dipole" TMD gluon distribution, which in our computations is based on HERA data and undergoes momentum space BK evolution equation with DGLAP corrections and Sudakov resummation. We conclude, that the process provides an excellent probe of the dipole TMD gluon distribution in saturation regime.

We observe that forward dijets in proton-nucleus collisions at moderately low pT are excellent probes of saturation effects, as the Sudakov resummation does not alter the suppression of the cross section.

This report was prepared on behalf of three Energy Frontier Topical Groups of the Snowmass 2021 Community Planning Exercise. It summarizes the status and implications of studies of strong interactions in high-energy experiments and QCD theory. We emphasize the rich landscape and broad impact of these studies in the decade ahead. Hadronic interactions play a central role in the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) physics program, and strong synergies exist between the (HL-)LHC and planned or proposed experiments at the U.S. Electron-Ion Collider, CERN forward physics experiments, high-intensity facilities, and future TeV-range lepton and hadron colliders. Prospects for precision determinations of the strong coupling and a variety of nonperturbative distribution and fragmentation functions are examined. We also review the potential of envisioned tests of new dynamical regimes of QCD in high-energy and high-density scattering processes with nucleon, ion, and photon initial states. The important role of the high-energy heavy-ion program in studies of nuclear structure and the nuclear medium, and its connections with QCD involving nucleons are summarized. We address ongoing and future theoretical advancements in multi-loop QCD computations, lattice QCD, jet substructure, and event generators. Cross-cutting connections between experimental measurements, theoretical predictions, large-scale data analysis, and high-performance computing are emphasized.

Studying the partonic cross section, we identify all soft and collinear divergencies in the real and virtual contribution, and recognize that all non-cancelling ones can be attributed to PDF evolution, evolution kernel, and target impact factors. In result, we construct a framework that may be used to compute NLO impact factors in general. In particular, we recover known expressions for inclusive NLO quark-and gluon impact factor corrections.

We propose a novel way of studying the gluon number density (the so-called Weizsäcker-Williams gluon distribution) using the planned Electron Ion Collider. Namely, with the help of the azimuthal correlations between the total transverse momentum of the dijet system and the scattered electron, we examine an interplay between the effect of the soft gluon emissions (the Sudakov form factor) and the gluon saturation effects. The kinematic cuts are chosen such that the dijet system is produced in the forward direction in the laboratory frame, which provides an upper bound on the probed longitudinal fractions of the hadron momentum carried by scattered gluons. Further cuts enable us to use the factorization formalism that directly involves the unpolarized Weizsäcker-Williams gluon distribution. We find this observable to be very sensitive to the soft gluon emission and moderately sensitive to the gluon saturation.

We use Lipatov's high energy effective action to determine the next-to-leading order corrections to Higgs production in the forward region within high energy factorization making use of the infinite top mass limit. Our result is based on an explicit calculation of real corrections combined with virtual corrections determined earlier by Nefedov. As a new element we provide a proper definition of the desired next-to-leading order coefficient within the high energy effective action framework, extending a previously proposed prescription. We further propose a subtraction mechanism to achieve for this coefficient a stable cancellation of real and virtual infra-red singularities in the presence of external off-shell legs. Apart from its relevance for direct phenomenological studies, such as high energy resummation of Higgs + jet configurations, our result will be further of use for the study of transverse momentum dependent factorization in the high energy limit.

We discuss central-forward dijet production at LHC energies within the framework of high energy factorization. In our study, we profit from the recent progress on consistent merging of Sudakov resummation with small-$x$ effects, which allows us to compute two different gluon distributions which depend on longitudinal momentum, transverse momentum and the hard scale of the process: one for the quark channel and one for the gluon channel. The small-$x$ resummation is included by means of the BK equation supplemented with a kinematic constraint and subleading corrections. We test the new gluon distributions against existing CMS data for transverse momentum spectra in forward-central dijet production. We obtain results which are largely consistent with our earlier predictions based on model implementation of Sudakov form factors. In addition, we study dijet azimuthal decorrelations for the forward-central jets, which are known to be sensitive to the modeling of soft radiation.

Heavy ion collisions at high energies can be used as an interesting way to recreate and study the medium of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). We particularly investigate the jets produced in hard binary collisions and their interactions with a tentative medium. These jets were obtained numerically from the Monte-Carlo simulations of hard collisions using the KATIE-algorithm [1], where parton momenta within the colliding nucleons were describe by means of unintegrated parton distribution functions (uPDF). We evolved these jets within a medium that contains both, transverse kicks (yielding a broadening in momentum transvers to the jet-axis) as well as medium induced radiation within the MINCAS-algorithm [2] following the works of [3,4]. We produce qualitative results for the decorrelation of dijets. In particular, we study deviations from a transverse momentum broadening that follows a Gaussian distribution.

We observe rather large differences in the distribution when we change the factorization approach, which allows to both improve the small-$x$ TMD gluon distributions as well as validate and improve the factorization approach. We also see significant depletion of the nuclear modification ratio, indicating a possibility of searches for saturation effects using trijet final states in a more exclusive way than for dijets.

Next-to-next-to-leading order QCD predictions for single-, double- and even triple-differential distributions of jet events in proton-proton collisions have recently been obtained using the NNLOjet framework based on antenna subtraction. These results are an important input for Parton Distribution Function fits to hadron-collider data. While these calculations include all of the partonic channels occurring at this order of the perturbative expansion, they are based on the leading-color approximation in the case of channels involving quarks and are only exact in color in the pure-gluon channel. In the present publication, we verify that the sub-leading color effects in the single-jet inclusive double-differential cross sections are indeed negligible as far as phenomenological applications are concerned. This is the first independent and complete calculation for this observable. We also take the opportunity to discuss the necessary modifications of the sector-improved residue subtraction scheme that made this work possible.

Abstract:
We demonstrate that the recent forward-forward dijet correlation data measured by the ATLAS collaboration for proton-proton and proton-lead collisions are consistent with the broadening effects due to both the gluon saturation and the resummation of large logarithms of the hard scale (the so-called Sudakov logarithms). We find that both effects are necessary to describe the experimental results.

We perform calculations of Z+jet cross-section taking into account the transverse momenta of the initial partons. Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton densities obtained with the Parton Branching method are used and higher order corrections are included via TMD parton showers in the initial state. The predictions are compared to measurements of forward Z+jet production of the LHCb collaboration at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. We show that the results obtained in kT-factorization are in good agreement with results obtained from a NLO calculation matched with traditional parton showers. We also demonstrate that in the forward rapidity region, kT-factorization and hybrid factorization predictions agree with each other.

A new calculation using off-shell matrix elements with TMD parton densities supplemented with a newly developed initial state TMD parton shower is described. The calculation is based on the KaTie package for an automated calculation of the partonic process in high-energy factorization, making use of TMD parton densities implemented in TMDlib. The partonic events are stored in an LHE file, similar to the conventional LHE files, but now containing the transverse momenta of the initial partons. The LHE files are read in by the CASCADE package for the full TMD parton shower, final state shower and hadronization from PYTHIA where events in HEPMC format are produced. We have determined a full set of TMD parton densities and developed an initial state TMD parton shower, including all flavors following the TMD distribution. As an example of application we have calculated the azimuthal de-correlation of high pt dijets as measured at the LHC and found very good agreement with the measurement when including initial state TMD parton showers together with conventional final state parton showers and hadronization.

For the 4-fermion amplitudes, which are not BCFW-recursible, we perform a diagrammatic computation, so as to offer a complete set of expressions. We explicitly show and discuss some plots of the squared $2 \rightarrow 2$ matrix elements as functions of the differences in rapidity and azimuthal angle of the final state particles.

We study the production of forward di-jets in proton-lead and proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Such configurations, with both jets produced in the forward direction, impose a dilute-dense asymmetry which allows to probe the gluon density of the lead or proton target at small longitudinal momentum fractions. Even though the jet momenta are always much bigger than the saturation scale of the target, $Q_s$, the transverse momentum imbalance of the di-jet system may be either also much larger than $Q_s$, or of the order $Q_s$, implying that the small-$x$ QCD dynamics involved is either linear or non-linear, respectively. The small-$x$ improved TMD factorization framework deals with both situation in the same formalism. In the latter case, which corresponds to nearly back-to-back jets, we find that saturation effects induce a significant suppression of the forward di-jet azimuthal correlations in proton-lead versus proton-proton collisions.

In the present paper we discuss how to maximize the double-parton scattering (DPS) contribution in four-jet production by selecting kinematical cuts. Here both single-parton and double-parton scattering effects are calculated in the $k_T$-factorization approach, following our recent developments of relevant methods and tools. Several differential distributions are shown and discussed in the context of future searches for DPS effects, such as rapidity of jets, rapidity distance, and azimuthal correlations between jets. The dependences of the relative DPS amount is studied as function of those observables. The regions with an enhanced DPS contribution are identified. Future experimental explorations could extract more precise values of $σ_{eff}$ and its potential dependence on kinematical variables.

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) Study is aimed at assessing the physics potential and the technical feasibility of a new collider with centre-of-mass energies, in the hadron-hadron collision mode, seven times larger than the nominal LHC energies. Operating such machine with heavy ions is an option that is being considered in the accelerator design studies. It would provide, for example, Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 39 and 63 TeV, respectively, per nucleon-nucleon collision, with integrated luminosities above 30 nb^-1 per month for Pb-Pb. This is a report by the working group on heavy-ion physics of the FCC Study. First ideas on the physics opportunities with heavy ions at the FCC are presented, covering the physics of the Quark-Gluon Plasma, of gluon saturation, of photon-induced collisions, as well as connections with other fields of high-energy physics.

We perform a first study of 4-jet production in a complete high-energy factorization (HEF) framework. We include and discuss contributions from both single-parton scattering (SPS) and double-parton scattering (DPS). The calculations are performed for kinematical situations relevant for two experimental measurements (ATLAS and CMS) at the LHC. We compare our results to those reported by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations for different sets of kinematical cuts. The results of the HEF approach are compared with their counterparts for collinear factorization. For symmetric cuts the DPS HEF result is considerably smaller than the one obtained with collinear factorization. The mechanism leading to this difference is of kinematical nature. We conclude that an analysis of inclusive 4-jet production with asymmetric $p_T$-cuts below 50 GeV would be useful to enhance the DPS contribution relative to the SPS contribution. In contrast to the collinear approach, the HEF approach nicely describes the distribution of the $ΔS$ variable, which involves all four jets and their angular correlations.

Multiple Partonic Interactions are often crucial for interpreting results obtained at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The quest for a sound understanding of the dynamics behind MPI - particularly at this time when the LHC is due to start its "Run II" operations - has focused the aim of this workshop. MPI@LHC2014 concentrated mainly on the phenomenology of LHC measurements whilst kee** in perspective those results obtained at previous hadron colliders. The workshop has also debated some of the state-of-the-art theoretical considerations and the modeling of MPI in Monte Carlo event generators. The topics debated in the workshop included: Phenomenology of MPI processes and multiparton distributions; Considerations for the description of MPI in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD); Measuring multiple partonic interactions; Experimental results on inelastic hadronic collisions: underlying event, minimum bias, forward energy flow; Monte Carlo generator development and tuning; Connections with low-x phenomena, diffraction, heavy-ion physics and cosmic rays. In a total of 57 plenary talks the workshop covered a wide range of experimental results, Monte Carlo development and tuning, phenomenology and dedicated measurements of MPI which were produced with data from the LHC's Run I. Recent progress of theoretical understanding of MPI in pp, pA and AA collisions as well as the role of MPI in diffraction and small-x physics were also covered. The workshop forstered close contact between the experimental and theoretical communities. It provided a setting to discuss many of the different aspects of MPI, eventually identifying them as a unifying concept between apparently different lines of research and evaluating their impact on the LHC physics programme.

We test various unintegrated gluon distributions involving subleading BFKL effects (such as kinematic constraint, running strong coupling and DGLAP correction) and compare the results with experimental data obtained by the LHCb experiment. We find that the hard scale dependence of unintegrated gluon distributions, which effectively resums the Sudakov-type logarithms on the top of the resummation of the small x logarithms, is essential to describe the normalized azimuthal decorrelations between the Z0-boson and the jet.

We present first results for the $2 \to 4$ single-parton scattering $g g \to c \bar c c \bar c$ subprocess for the first time fully within the $k_t$-factorization approach. In this calculation we have used the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin unintegrated gluon distribution which effectively includes some class of higher-order gluon emissions, and an off-shell matrix element squared calculated using recently developed techniques. The results are compared with our earlier result obtained within the collinear-factorization approach. Only slightly larger cross sections are obtained than in the case of the collinear approach. Inclusion of transverse momenta of gluons entering the hard process leads to a much stronger azimuthal decorrelation between $c c$ and $\bar c \bar c$ than in the collinear-factorization approach. A comparison to predictions of double parton scattering (DPS) results and the LHCb data strongly suggests that the assumption of two fully independent DPS ($g g \to c \bar c \otimes g g \to c \bar c$) may be too approximate.

We study forward dijet production in dilute-dense hadronic collisions. By considering the appropriate limits, we show that both the transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) and the high-energy factorization formulas can be derived from the Color Glass Condensate framework. Respectively, this happens when the transverse momentum imbalance of the dijet system, $k_t$, is of the order of either the saturation scale, or the hard jet momenta, the former being always much smaller than the latter. We propose a new formula for forward dijets that encompasses both situations and is therefore applicable regardless of the magnitude of $k_t$. That involves generalizing the TMD factorization formula for dijet production to the case where the incoming small-$x$ gluon is off-shell. The derivation is performed in two independent ways, using either Feynman diagram techniques, or color-ordered amplitudes.

We discuss production of open charm mesons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The cross section for inclusive production of $c \bar c$ pairs is calculated within the $k_{\perp}$-factorization approach in which a major part of higher-order corrections is belived to be effectively included. We use and test the applicability of several unintegrated gluon distributions. Numerical results of the $k_{\perp}$-factorization approach are compared to NLO pQCD collinear predictions. Inclusive differential distributions in transverse momentum and (pseudo)rapidity of several charmed mesons are presented and compared to recent results of the ALICE, ATLAS and LHCb collaborations. We also examine production of neutral charmed meson-antimeson pairs ($D^0 {\overline D^0}$) in unique kinematics of forward rapidities of the LHCb experiment. Kinematical correlations in azimuthal angle $\varphi_{D^0 {\overline D^0}}$, invariant mass $M_{D^0 {\overline D^0}}$ and rapidity difference $Y_{D^0 {\overline D^0}}$ distributions are calculated. Moreover, we also discuss production of two pairs of $c \bar c$ within a simple formalism of double-parton scattering (DPS). We compare results of calculations of single-parton scattering (SPS) and double-parton scattering (DPS) for production of $c \bar c c \bar c$ and for $D^0-D^0$ meson-meson correlations. We compare our predictions for double charm production with recent results of the LHCb collaboration for azimuthal angle $\varphi_{D^0 D^0}$ distribution, dimeson invariant mass $M_{D^0 D^0}$ and rapidity distance between mesons $Y_{D^0 D^0}$. The obtained results clearly certify the dominance of DPS in the production of events with double charm.

Abstract:
We compare results of exact calculations of single parton scattering (SPS) and double parton scattering (DPS) for production of $c \bar c c \bar c$ and for $D$ meson correlations. The SPS calculations are performed in collinear approximation with exact matrix element for $g g \to c \bar c c \bar c$ and $q \bar q \to c \bar c c \bar c$ subprocesses. It is shown that the contribution of gluon-gluon…

It is shown that the contribution of gluon-gluon subprocess is about factor 50 larger than that for quark-antiquark annihilation. The new results are compared with results of previous calculation with the approximate matrix element for $g g \to c \bar c c \bar c$ in the high-energy approximation. The cross section for the present exact calculation is bigger only at small invariant masses and small rapidity difference between two $c$ quarks (or two $\bar c$ antiquarks). We compare correlations in rapidities of two $c$ (or two $\bar c$) for DPS and SPS contributions. Finally we compare our predictions for $D$ mesons with recent results of the LHCb collaboration for invariant mass, rapidity distance between mesons and dimeson invariant mass. The predicted shapes are similar to the measured ones, however, some strength seems to be lacking. Our new calulations clearly confirm the dominance of DPS in the production of events with double charm.

We study saturation effects in the production of forward dijets in proton-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, using the framework of High Energy Factorization. Such configurations, with both jets produced in the forward direction, probe the gluon density of the lead nucleus at small longitudinal momentum fraction, and also limit the phase space for emissions of additional jets. We find significant suppression of the forward dijet azimuthal correlations in proton-lead versus proton-proton collisions, which we attribute to stronger saturation of the gluon density in the nucleus than in the proton. In order to minimize model dependence of our predictions, we use two different extensions of the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation for evolution of the gluon density with sub-leading corrections.

Our calculation relies on high-energy factorization with a single off-shell gluon obeying small x evolution equation which includes saturation. The calculations are made using two independent Monte Carlo codes implementing tree-level gauge invariant off-shell matrix elements. We calculate differential cross sections for azimuthal decorrelations and unbalanced jet transverse momenta and discuss them in the context of differences in the evolution of the unintegrated gluon densities.

A prescription is presented to construct manifestly gauge invariant tree-level scattering amplitudes with one or two off-shell initial-state gluons for processes with arbitrary particles in the final state, which allows for calculations that are efficient and easy to automate. These scattering amplitudes are relevant for factorization schemes beyond collinear factorization that allow the gluons entering the partonic cross section to have non-vanishing transversal momentum components.
