In order to characterize in detail the charge density wave (CDW) transition of 1$T$-VSe$_2$, its electronic structure and lattice dynamics are comprehensively studied by means of x-ray diffraction, angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS), and state-of-the-art first principles density functional theory calculations. Resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS) does not show any resonant enhancement at either V or Se K-edges, indicating that the CDW peak describes a purely structural modulation of the electronic ordering. ARPES identifies (i) a pseudogap at T$>$T$_{CDW}$, which leads to a depletion of the density of states in the $ML-M'L'$ plane at T$<$T$_{CDW}$, and (ii) anomalies in the electronic dispersion reflecting a sizable impact of phonons on it. A diffuse scattering precursor, characteristic of soft phonons, is observed at room temperature (RT) and leads to the full collapse of the low-energy phonon ($ω_1$) with propagation vector (0.25 0 -0.3) r.l.u. We show that the frequency and linewidth of this mode are anisotropic in momentum space, reflecting the momentum dependence of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI), hence demonstrating that the origin of the CDW is, to a much larger extent, due to the momentum dependence EPI with a small contribution from nesting. The pressure dependence of the $ω_1$ soft mode remains nearly constant up to 13 GPa at RT, with only a modest softening before the transition to the high-pressure monoclinic $C2/m$ phase. The wide set of experimental data are well captured by our state-of-the art first-principles anharmonic calculations with the inclusion of van der Waals (vdW) corrections in the exchange-correlation functional. The description of the electronics and dynamics of VSe$_2$ reported here adds important pieces of information to the understanding of the electronic modulations of TMDs.

Using high resolution tender-x-ray resonant inelastic scattering and hard-x-ray non-resonant inelastic scattering beyond the dipole limit we were able to detect electronic excitations in intermetallic UGa$_2$ that are highly atomic in nature. Analysis of the spectral lineshape reveals that the local $5f^2$ configuration characterizes the correlated nature of this ferromagnet. The orientation and directional dependence of the spectra indicate that the ground state is made of the $Γ_1$ singlet and/or $Γ_6$ doublet symmetry. With the ordered moment in the $ab$ plane, we infer that the magnetism originates from the higher lying $Γ_6$ doublet being mixed with the $Γ_1$ singlet due to inter-site exchange, qualifying UGa$_2$ to be a true quantum magnet. The ability to observe atomic excitations is crucial to resolve the on-going debate about the degree of localization versus itineracy in U intermetallics.

The long range electronic modulations recently discovered in the geometrically frustrated kagome lattice have opened new avenues to explore the effect of correlations in materials with topological electron flat bands. The observation of the lattice response to the emergent new phases of matter, a soft phonon mode, has remained elusive and the microscopic origin of charge density waves (CDWs) is still unknown. Here, we show, for the first time, a complete melting of the ScV$_ 6$Sn$_ 6$ (166) kagome lattice. The low energy phonon with propagation vector $\frac{1}{3} \frac{1}{3} \frac{1}{2}$ collapses at 98 K, without the emergence of long-range charge order, which sets in with a propagation vector $\frac{1}{3} \frac{1}{3} \frac{1}{3}$. The CDW is driven (but locks at a different vector) by the softening of an overdamped phonon flat plane at k$_z$=$π$. We observe broad phonon anomalies in momentum space, pointing to (1) the existence of approximately flat phonon bands which gain some dispersion due to electron renormalization, and (2) the effects of the momentum dependent electron-phonon interaction in the CDW formation. Ab initio and analytical calculations corroborate the experimental findings to indicate that the weak leading order phonon instability is located at the wave vector $\frac{1}{3} \frac{1}{3} \frac{1}{2}$ of a rather flat collapsed mode. We analytically compute the phonon frequency renormalization from high temperatures to the soft mode, and relate it to a peak in the orbital-resolved susceptibility, obtaining an excellent match with both ab initio and experimental results, and explaining the origin of the approximately flat phonon dispersion. Our data report the first example of the collapse of a softening of a flat phonon plane and promote the 166 compounds of the kagome family as primary candidates to explore correlated flat phonon-topological flat electron physics.

The intertwining between spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom can give rise to unusual macroscopic quantum states, including high-temperature superconductivity and quantum anomalous Hall effects. Recently, a charge density wave (CDW) is observed in the kagome antiferromagnet FeGe, indicative of possible intertwining physics. An outstanding question is that whether magnetic correlation is fundamental for the spontaneous spatial symmetry breaking orders. Here, utilizing elastic and high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering, we discover a charge dimerization superlattice that coexists with the 2$\times$2$\times$1 CDW in the kagome sublattice. Most interestingly, between the magnetic and CDW transition temperature, the phonon dynamical structure factor shows a giant phonon-energy hardening and a substantial phonon linewidth broadening near the charge-dimerization wavevectors, both signaling the spin-phonon coupling. By first principles calculations, we show that both the static and dynamic spin excitations intertwine with the phonon to drive the spatial symmetry breaking.

The nature of the charge density wave phases in the kagome metal compound AV$_3$Sb$_5$ has raised many questions and their origin is still under debate. Here, we combine diffuse scattering (DS) and inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) to identify a 3-dimensional (3D) precursor of the charge order with propagation vector (0.5 0 0.5), which condenses into a 3D-CDW through a first order phase transition. The quasi-elastic critical scattering indicates that the dominant contribution to the diffuse precursor is the elastic central peak without phonon softening. However, the inelastic spectra show a small broadening of the Einstein-type phonon mode on approaching the phase transition. Our results point to the situation where the Fermi surface instability at the \textit{L} point is of order-disorder type with a critical growth of quasi-static domains. The results go beyond the classical weak-coupling Peierls transition dynamics and are discussed within models including strong-electron phonon coupling and non-adiabaticity.

Research on charge-density-wave (CDW) ordered transition-metal dichalcogenides continues to unravel new states of quantum matter correlated to the intertwined lattice and electronic degrees of freedom. Here, we report an inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of the lattice dynamics of the canonical CDW compound $2H$-TaSe$_2$ complemented by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results rule out the central-peak scenario for the CDW transition in $2H$-TaSe$_2$ and provide evidence for a novel precursor phase above the CDW transition temperature $T_{CDW}$. The phase at temperatures between $T^{*}\,(= 128.7\,,\rm{K})$ and $T_{CDW}\,(= 121.3\,\rm{K})$ is characterized by a fully softened phonon mode and medium-range ordered ($ξ_{corr} = 100\,\rm{\mathring{A}}- 200\,\rm{\mathring{A}})$ static CDW domains. Only $T_{CDW}$ is detectable in our photoemission experiments. Thus, $2H$-TaSe$_2$ exhibits structural before electronic static order and emphasizes the important lattice contribution to CDW transitions.

The intricate interplay between novel lattice geometry and spontaneous symmetry-breaking states is at the forefront of contemporary research on quantum materials. Recently, the observation of unconventional charge and pairing density waves in a kagome metal CsV3Sb5 brings out a new showcase for intertwined orders. While electronic instabilities in CsV3Sb5 are widely believed to originate from the V 3d-electrons residing on the 2-dimensional kagome sublattice, the pivotal role of Sb 5p-electrons for 3-dimensional orders is yet to be understood. Here, using resonant tender x-ray scattering and high-pressure X-ray scattering, we report a rare realization of conjoined charge density waves (CDW) in CsV3Sb5. At ambient pressure, we discover a resonant enhancement at Sb L1-edge (2s-5p) at the 2$\times$2$\times$2 CDW wavevectors. The resonance, however, is absent at the 2$\times$2 CDW wavevectors. Applying hydrostatic pressure, we find the CDW transition temperatures to separate, where the 2$\times$2$\times$2 CDW emerges 4 K above the 2$\times$2 CDW at 1GPa. Our results establish the coexistence of the 2$\times$2 CDW and the 5p-electron assisted 2$\times$2$\times$2 CDW in CsV3Sb5. The evolution of the conjoined CDWs under pressure suggests the joint importance of electronic and phononic fluctuations for the double dome superconductivity.

Phonon chirality has attracted intensive attention since it breaks the traditional cognition that phonons are linear propagating bosons. This new quasiparticle property has been extensively studied theoretically and experimentally. However, characterization of the phonon chirality throughout the full Brillouin zone is still not possible due to the lack of available experimental tools. In this work, phonon dispersion and chirality of tungsten carbide were investigated by millielectronvolt energy-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering. The atomistic calculation indicates that in-plane longitudinal and transverse acoustic phonons near K and K$^\prime$ points are circularly polarized due to the broken inversion symmetry. Anomalous inelastic X-ray scattering by these circularly polarized phonons was observed and attributed to their chirality. Our results show that inelastic X-ray scattering can be utilized to characterize phonon chirality in materials and suggest that a revision to the phonon scattering function is necessary.

In two-dimensional materials, structure difference induces the difference in phonon dispersions, leading to the anisotropy of in-plane thermal transport. Here, we report an exceptional case in layered PdSe2, where the bonding, force constants, and lattice constants are nearly-equal along the in-plane crystallographic axis directions. The phonon dispersions show significant differences between the Gamma-X and Gamma-Y directions, leading to the anisotropy of in-plane thermal conductivity with a ratio up to 1.8. Such anisotropy is not only unexpected in equilaterally structured (in-plane) materials but also comparable to the record in the non-equilaterally structured material reported to date. By combining inelastic X-ray scattering and first-principles calculations, we attribute such anisotropy to the low-energy phonons along Gamma-X, in particular, their lower group velocities and "avoided-crossing" behavior. The different bucking structures between a- (zigzag-type) and b-axis (flat-type) are mainly responsible for the unique phonon dynamics properties of PdSe2. The present results illustrate the unusual thermal conduction mechanism of the equilaterally structured materials and provide valuable insights on thermal management in electronic devices.

This mode is independent of temperature, while its intensity decreases with do** in accordance with an increasing c-axis lattice parameter. We compare the experimental results to first-principles density functional theory simulations and identify the observed mode as a van der Waals phonon, which arises from the shear motion of the adjacent Bi-O layers. Understanding lattice dynamics is crucial for effective thermal management in high-power electronic devices because phonons dominate thermal transport in most semiconductors. This study utilizes complementary inelastic X-ray and neutron scattering techniques and reports the temperature-dependent phonon dynamics of alpha-GaN, one of the most important third-generation power semiconductors. A prominent Matryoshka phonon dispersion is discovered with the scattering tools and confirmed by the first-principles calculations. Such Matryoshka twinning throughout the three-dimension reciprocal space is demonstrated to amplify the anharmonicity of the related phonon modes through creating abundant three-phonon scattering channels and cutting the phonon lifetime of affected modes by more than 50%. Such phonon topology effectively contributes to the reduction of the in-plane thermal transport, thus the anisotropic thermal conductivity of alpha-GaN. The results not only have significant implications for engineering the thermal performance and other phonon-related properties of alpha-GaN, but also offer valuable insights on the role of anomalous phonon topology in thermal transport of other technically important semiconductors.

The family of edge-sharing tri-coordinated iridates and ruthenates has emerged in recent years as a major platform for Kitaev spin liquid physics, where spins fractionalize into emergent magnetic fluxes and Majorana fermions with Dirac-like dispersions. While such exotic states are usually pre-empted by long-range magnetic order at low temperatures, signatures of Majorana fermions with long coherent times have been predicted to manifest at intermediate and higher energy scales, similar to the observation of spinons in quasi-1D spin chains. Here we present a Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering study of the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under a magnetic field with a record-high-resolution spectrometer. At low-temperatures, dispersing spin waves can be resolved around the predicted intertwined incommensurate spiral and field-induced zigzag orders, whose excitation energy reaches a maximum of 16meV. A 2T magnetic field softens the dispersion around ${\bf Q}=0$. The behavior of the spin waves under magnetic field is consistent with our semiclassical calculations for the ground state and the dynamical spin structure factor, which further predicts that the ensued intertwined uniform states remain robust up to very high fields (100 T). Most saliently, the low-energy magnon-like mode is superimposed by a broad continuum of excitations, centered around 35meV and extending up to 100meV. This high-energy continuum survives up to at least 300K -- well above the ordering temperature of 38K -- and gives evidence for pairs of long-lived Majorana fermions of the proximate Kitaev spin liquid.

While large (20 nm) nanocrystals display the same vibrational spectra as their microcrystalline counterparts, we find an enhanced phonon density of states at low energies, $E \leq 15\,\rm{meV}$, in ultra-small (5 nm) NaGd$_{0.8}$Yb$_{0.18}$Er$_{0.02}$F$_4$ nanocrystals which we assign to an increased relative spectral weight of surface phonon modes. Based on our observations for ultra-small nanocrystals, we rationalize that an increase of the phonon density of states in large nanocrystals due to surface phonons is too small to be observed in the current measurements. The experimental approach described in this report constitutes the first step toward the rationalization of size effects on the modification of the absolute upconversion quantum yield of upconverting nanocrystals.

We report inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the in-plane polarized transverse acoustic phonon mode propagating along $q\parallel$[100] in various hole-doped compounds belonging to the 122 family of iron-based superconductors. The slope of the dispersion of this phonon mode is proportional to the square root of the shear modulus $C_{66}$ in the $q \rightarrow 0$ limit and, hence, sensitive to the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition occurring in these compounds. In contrast to a recent report for Ba(Fe$_{0.94}$Co$_{0.06}$)$_2$As$_2$ [F. Weber et al., Phys. Rev. B 98, 014516 (2018)], we find qualitative agreement between values of $C_{66}$ deduced from our experiments and those derived from measurements of the Youngs modulus in Ba$_{1-x}$(K,Na)$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ at optimal do**. These results provide an upper limit of about 50 Å for the nematic correlation length for the optimally hole-doped compounds. Furthermore, we also studied compounds at lower do** levels exhibiting the orthorhombic magnetic phase, where $C_{66}$ is not accessible by volume probes, as well as the C4 tetragonal magnetic phase.investigated

By a self-contained method of analysis, for the underdoped ($x=0.36$) sample, which harbors a magnetically-ordered tetragonal phase, we find it hosts a short nematic correlation length $ξ$ ~ 10 $Å$ and a large nematic susceptibility $χ_{\rm nem}$. The optimal-doped ($x=0.55$) sample exhibits weaker phonon softening effects, indicative of both reduced $ξ$ and $χ_{\rm nem}$. Our results suggest short-range nematic fluctuations may favor superconductivity, placing emphasis on the nematic correlation length for understanding the iron-based superconductors.

Among transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), VSe$_2$ is considered to develop a purely 3-dimensional (3D) charge-density wave (CDW) at T$_{CDW}$=110 K. Here, by means of high resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS), we show that the CDW transition is driven by the collapse of an acoustic mode at the critical wavevector \textit{q}$_{CDW}$= (2.25 0 0.7) r.l.u. and critical temperature T$_{CDW}$=110 K. The softening of this mode starts to be pronounced for temperatures below 2$\times$ T$_{CDW}$ and expands over a rather wide region of the Brillouin zone, suggesting a large contribution of the electron-phonon interaction to the CDW formation. This interpretation is supported by our first principles calculations that determine a large momentum-dependence of the electron-phonon interaction, peaking at the CDW wavevector, in the presence of nesting. Fully anharmonic {\it ab initio} calculations confirm the softening of one acoustic branch at \textit{q}$_{CDW}$ as responsible for the CDW formation and show that van der Waals interactions are crucial to melt the CDW. Our work also highlights the important role of out-of-plane interactions to describe 3D CDWs in TMDs.

The intermediate valence (IV) compound YbAl$_3$ exhibits nonintegral valence (Yb 4$f^{14-n_f}$ (5d6s)$^z$ where z = 2+n$_f$ = 2.75) in a moderately heavy (m* = 20-30me) ground state with a large Kondo temperature (T$_K$ ~ 500-600K). We have measured the magnetic fluctuations and the phonon spectra on single crystals of this material by time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). We find that at low temperature, the Kondo-scale spin fluctuations have a momentum (Q) dependence similar to that seen recently in the IV compound CePd$_3$ and which can be attributed to particle-hole excitations in a coherent itinerant 4$f$ correlated ground state. The Q-dependence disappears as the temperature is raised towards room temperature and the 4$f$ electron band states become increasingly incoherent. The measured phonons can be described adequately by a calculation based on standard DFT+$U$ density functional theory, without recourse to considering 4$f$ correlations dynamically. A low temperature magnetic peak observed in the neutron scattering at ~ 30meV shows dispersion identical to an optic phonon branch. This 4$f$/phonon resonance disappears for T > 150K. The phonons appear to remain unaffected by the resonance. We discuss several possibilities for the origin of this unusual excitation, including the idea that it arises from the large amplitude beating of the light Al atoms against the heavy Yb atoms, resulting in a dynamic 4$f$/3$p$ hybridization.

In all cases, we find that $ξ$ is well described by a power law $(T-T_0)^{-1/2}$ extending over a wide temperature range. We attributed this mean-field behavior and the extended fluctuation regime to a sizable nemato-elastic coupling, which may be detrimental to superconductivity.

While condensed matter systems host both Fermionic and Bosonic quasi-particles, reliably predicting and empirically verifying topological states is only mature for Fermionic electronic structures, leaving topological Bosonic excitations sporadically explored. This is unfortunate, as Bosonic systems such a phonons offer the opportunity to assess spinless band structures where nodal lines can be realized without invoking special additional symetries to protect against spin-orbit coupling. Here we combine first-principles calculations and meV-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering to demonstrate the first realization of parity-time reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry protected helical nodal lines in the phonon spectrum of MoB$_{2}$. This structure is unique to phononic systems as the spin-orbit coupling present in electronic systems tends to lift the degeneracy away from high-symmetry locations. Our study establishes a protocol to accurately identify topological Bosonic excitations, opening a new route to explore exotic topological states in crystalline materials.

Phonon measurements in the A15-type superconductors were complicated in the past because of the unavailability of large single crystals for inelastic neutron scattering, e.g., in the case of Nb$_3$Sn, or unfavorable neutron scattering properties in the case of V$_3$Si. Hence, only few studies of the lattice dynamical properties with momentum resolved methods were published, in particular below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. Here, we overcome these problems by employing inelastic x-ray scattering and report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of lattice dynamics in V$_3$Si with the focus on the temperature-dependent properties of low-energy acoustic phonon modes in several high-symmetry directions. We paid particular attention to the evolution of the soft phonon mode of the structural phase transition observed in our sample at $T_s=18.9\,\rm{K}$, i.e., just above the measured superconducting phase transition at $T_c=16.8\,\rm{K}$. Theoretically, we predict lattice dynamics including electron-phonon coupling based on density-functional-perturbation theory and discuss the relevance of the soft phonon mode with regard to the value of $T_c$. Furthermore, we explain superconductivityinduced anomalies in the lineshape of several acoustic phonon modes using a model proposed by Allen et al., [Phys. Rev. B 56, 5552 (1997)].

The pristine parent compound ($x=0$) shows two separate, mutually perpendicular, incommensurate unidirectional CDW phases setting in at 270 K and 165 K. Here we track the suppression of signatures corresponding to these two parent transitions as the Pd concentration increases. At the largest values of $x$, we observe complete suppression of long range CDW order in favor of superconductivity. We also report evidence from electron and x-ray diffraction which suggests a tendency toward short-range ordering along both wavevectors which persists even well above the crossover temperature. Pd$_x$ErTe$_3$ provides a promising model system for the study of the interrelation of charge order and superconductivity in the presence of quenched disorder.

Material properties depend sensitively on the atomic arrangements and atomic bonding, but these are notoriously difficult to measure in nanosized atomic clusters due to the small size of the objects and the challenge of obtaining bulk samples of identical clusters. Here we have combined the recent ability to make gram quantities of identical semiconductor quantum-dot nanoparticles with the ability to measure lattice dynamics on small sample quantities of hydrogenated materials using high energy resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (HERIX), to measure the size-dependence of the phonon density of states (PDOS) in CdSe quantum dots. The fact that we have atomically precise structural models for these nanoparticles allows the calculation of the PDOS using Density Functional Theory (DFT), providing both experimental and theoretical confirmations of the important role that the inertia of the surface cap** species plays on determining the lattice dynamics.

The family of rare-earth tritellurides RTe$_3$ features charge-density-wave (CDW) order related to strongly momentum-dependent electron-phonon coupling. Similar to other CDW compounds, superconductivity is observed when the CDW order is suppressed via hydrostatic pressure [1]. What sets the heavier members of the RTe3 series apart is the observation of a second CDW transition at lower temperatures having an in-plane ordering wavevector $q_{CDW,2}\parallel [100]$ of almost the same magnitude but orthogonal to the ordering wavevector $q_{CDW,1}\parallel [001]$ observed at higher temperatures [2]. Here, we report an inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of the lattice dynamics of DyTe$_3$. In particular, we show that there are several phonon modes along both in-plane directions, which respond to the onset of the CDW transition at $T_{CDW,1}=308\,\rm{K}$. Surprisingly, these soft modes close to $q_{CDW,2}=(0.68,0,0)$ show strong softening near $T_{CDW,1}$ but do not exhibit any response to the lower-temperature transition at $T_{CDW,2}=68\,\rm{K}$. Our results indicate that the low-temperature CDW order is not just the 90° rotated analogue of the one appearing at high temperatures.

Perovskite structured materials contain myriad tunable ordered phases of electronic and magnetic origin with proven technological importance and strong promise for a variety of energy solutions. An always-contributing influence beneath these cooperative and competing interactions is the lattice, whose physics may be obscured in complex perovskites by the many coupled degrees of freedom which makes these systems interesting. Here we report signatures of an approach to a quantum phase transition very near the ground state of the nonmagnetic, ionic insulating, simple cubic perovskite material ScF3 and show that its physical properties are strongly effected as much as 100 K above the putative transition. Spatial and temporal correlations in the high-symmetry cubic phase determined using energy- and momentum-resolved inelastic X-ray scattering as well as X-ray diffraction reveal that soft mode, central peak and thermal expansion phenomena are all strongly influenced by the transition.

The competition between superconductivity and other ground states of solids is one of the challenging topics in condensed matter physics. Apart from high-temperature superconductors [1,2] this interplay also plays a central role in the layered transition-metal dichalcogenides, where superconductivity is stabilized by suppressing charge-density-wave order to zero temperature by intercalation [3] or applied pressure [4-7]. 1T-TiSe$_2$ forms a prime example, featuring superconducting domes on intercalation as well as under applied pressure. Here, we present high energy-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the CDW soft phonon mode in intercalated Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$ and pressurized 1T-TiSe$_2$ along with detailed ab-initio calculations for the lattice dynamical properties and phonon-mediated superconductivity. We find that the intercalation-induced superconductivity can be explained by a solely phonon-mediated pairing mechanism, while this is not possible for the superconducting phase under pressure. We argue that a hybridization of phonon and exciton modes in the pairing mechanism is necessary to explain the full observed temperature-pressure-intercalation phase diagram. These results indicate that 1T-TiSe$_2$ under pressure is close to the elusive state of the excitonic insulator.

We present a high energy-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering data investigation of the charge-density-wave (CDW) soft phonon mode upon entering the superconducting state in $2H$-NbSe$_2$. Measurements were done close to the CDW ordering wavevector $\mathbf{q}_{CDW}$ at $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{q}_{CDW}+(0,0,l)$,$0.15\leq l \leq 0.5$, for $T=10\,\rm{K}$ (CDW order) and $3.8\,\rm{K}$ (CDW order + superconductivity). We observe changes of the phonon lineshape that are characteristic for systems with strong electron-phonon coupling in the presence of a superconducting energy gap $2Δ_c$ and from which we can demonstrate an $l$-dependence of the superconducting gap. Reversely, our data imply that the CDW energy gap is strongly localized along the $c^*$ direction. The confinement of the CDW gap to a very small momentum region explains the rather low competition and easy coexistence of CDW order and superconductivity in $2H$-NbSe$_2$. However, the energy gained by opening $Δ_{CDW}$ seems to be too small to be the driving force of the phase transition at $T_{CDW}=33\,\rm{K}$ , which is better described as an electron-phonon coupling driven structural phase transition.

Measuring how the magnetic correlations throughout the Brillouin zone evolve in a Mott insulator as charges are introduced dramatically improved our understanding of the pseudogap, non-Fermi liquids and high $T_C$ superconductivity. Recently, photoexcitation has been used to induce similarly exotic states transiently. However, understanding how these states emerge has been limited because of a lack of available probes of magnetic correlations in the time domain, which hinders further investigation of how light can be used to control the properties of solids. Here we implement magnetic resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at a free electron laser, and directly determine the magnetization dynamics after photo-do** the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. We find that the non-equilibrium state 2~ps after the excitation has strongly suppressed long-range magnetic order, but hosts photo-carriers that induce strong, non-thermal magnetic correlations. The magnetism recovers its two-dimensional (2D) in-plane Néel correlations on a timescale of a few ps, while the three-dimensional (3D) long-range magnetic order restores over a far longer, fluence-dependent timescale of a few hundred ps. The dramatic difference in these two timescales, implies that characterizing the dimensionality of magnetic correlations will be vital in our efforts to understand ultrafast magnetic dynamics.

Phonon properties of $\mathrm{Mo_3Sb_{7-x}Te_x}$ ($x=0,1.5, 1.7$), a potential high-temperature thermoelectric material, have been studied with inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering, and with first-principles simulations. The substitution of Te for Sb leads to pronounced changes in the electronic structure, local bonding, phonon density of states (DOS), dispersions, and phonon lifetimes. Alloying with tellurium shifts the Fermi level upward, near the top of the valence band, resulting in a strong suppression of electron-phonon screening, and a large overall stiffening of interatomic force-constants. The suppression in electron-phonon coupling concomitantly increases group velocities and suppresses phonon scattering rates, surpassing the effects of alloy-disorder scattering, and resulting in a surprising increased lattice thermal conductivity in the alloy. We also identify that the local bonding environment changes non-uniformly around different atoms, leading to variable perturbation strengths for different optical phonon branches. The respective roles of changes in phonon group velocities and phonon lifetimes on the lattice thermal conductivity are quantified. Our results highlight the importance of the electron-phonon coupling on phonon mean-free-paths in this compound, and also estimates the contributions from boundary scattering, umklapp scattering, and point-defect scattering.

We present a high energy-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of the soft phonon mode in the charge-density-wave system TbTe$_3$. We analyze our data based on lattice dynamical calculations using density-functional-perturbation-theory and find clear evidence that strongly momentum dependent electron-phonon-coupling defines the periodicity of the CDW superstructure: Our experiment reveals strong phonon softening and increased phonon line widths over a large part in reciprocal space adjacent to the CDW ordering vector $q_{CDW} = (0, 0, 0.3)$. Further, $q_{CDW}$ is clearly offset from the wave vector of (weak) Fermi surface nesting $q_{FS} = (0, 0, 0.25)$ and our detailed analysis indicates that electron-phonon-coupling is responsible for this shift. Hence, we can add TbTe$_3$, which was previously considered as a canonical CDW compound following the Peierls scenario, to the list of distinct charge-density-wave materials characterized by momentum dependent electron-phonon coupling.

In condensed matter systems, out of a large number of interacting degrees of freedom emerge weakly coupled particles, in terms of which most physical properties are described. For example, Landau quasiparticles (QP) determine all electronic properties of a normal metal. The lack of identification of such QPs is major barrier for understanding myriad exotic properties of correlated electrons, such as unconventional superconductivity and non-Fermi liquid behaviours. Here, we report the observation of a composite particle in a Mott insulator Sr2IrO4---and exciton dressed with magnons---that propagates with the canonical characteristics of a QP: a finite QP residue and a lifetime longer than the hop** time scale. The dynamics of this charge-neutral bosonic excitation mirrors the fundamental process of the analogous one-hole propagation in the background of ordered spins, for which a well-defined QP has never been observed. The much narrower linewidth of the exciton reveals the same intrinsic dynamics that is obscured for the hole and is intimately related to the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity.

The films were grown on $\mathrm{SrTiO_3}$ and $\mathrm{(LaAlO_3)_{0.3}(Sr_2AlTaO_6)_{0.7}}$ substrates, under slight tensile and compressive strains, respectively. Although the films develop a magnetic structure reminiscent of bulk $\mathrm{Sr_2IrO_4}$, the magnetic correlations are extremely anisotropic, with in-plane correlation lengths significantly longer than the out-of-plane correlation lengths. In addition, the compressive (tensile) strain serves to suppress (enhance) the magnetic ordering temperature $\mathrm{T_N}$, while raising (lowering) the energy of the zone boundary magnon. Quantum chemical calculations show that the tuning of magnetic energy scales can be understood in terms of strain-induced change in bond lengths.

We find that, for a temperature ~1/3 of the CDW onset temperature (~155 K), the CDW order is static within the resolution of the experiment, that is the inverse lifetime is less than 0.3 meV. In the same temperature region, low-energy phonons near the ordering wavevector of the CDW show large increases in their linewidths. This contrasts with the usual behavior in CDW systems where the phonon anomalies are strongest near the CDW onset temperature

The low energy excitations in Na2IrO3 have been investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). A magnetic excitation branch can be resolved, whose dispersion reaches a maximum energy of about 35 meV at the Γ-point. The momentum dependence of the excitation energy is much larger along the Γ-X direction compared to that along the Γ-Y direction. The observed dispersion relation is consistent with a recent theoretical prediction based on Heisenberg-Kitaev model. At high temperatures, we find large contributions from lattice vibrational modes to our RIXS spectra, suggesting that a strong electron-lattice coupling is present in Na2IrO3.

We experimentally investigate the symmetry in the Hidden Order (HO) phase of intermetallic URu2Si2 by map** the lattice and magnetic excitations via inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering measurements in the HO and high-temperature paramagnetic phases. At all temperatures the excitations respect the zone edges of the body-centered tetragonal paramagnetic phase, showing no signs of reduced spatial symmetry, even in the HO phase. The magnetic excitations originate from transitions between hybridized bands and track the Fermi surface, whose feature are corroborated by the phonon measurements. Due to a large hybridization energy scale, a full uranium moment persists in the HO phase, consistent with a lack of observed crystal-field-split states. Our results are inconsistent with local order parameter models and the behavior of typical density waves. We suggest that an order parameter that does not break spatial symmetry would naturally explain these characteristics.

The electronic structure of the honeycomb lattice iridates Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 has been investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Crystal-field split d-d excitations are resolved in the high-resolution RIXS spectra. In particular, the splitting due to non-cubic crystal fields, derived from the splitting of j_eff=3/2 states, is much smaller than the typical spin-orbit energy scale in iridates, validating the applicability of j_eff physics in A2IrO3. We also find excitonic enhancement of the particle-hole excitation gap around 0.4 eV, indicating that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction could be large. These findings suggest that both Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 can be described as spin-orbit Mott insulators, similar to the square lattice iridate Sr2IrO4.

The phonon dispersion was measured at room temperature along (0,0,L) in the tetragonal phase of LaFeAsO using inelastic x-ray scattering. Spin-polarized first-principles calculations imposing various types of antiferromagnetic order are in better agreement with the experimental results than nonmagnetic calculations, although the measurements were made well above the magnetic ordering temperature, T_N. Splitting observed between two A_{1g} phonon modes at 22 and 26 meV is only observed in spin-polarized calculations. Magneto-structural effects similar to those observed in the AFe_2As_2 materials are confirmed present in LaFeAsO. The presence of Fe-spin is necessary to find reasonable agreement of the calculations with the measured spectrum well above T_N. On-site Fe and As force constants show significant softening compared to nonmagnetic calculations, however an investigation of the real-space force constants associates the magnetoelastic coupling with a complex renormalization instead of softening of a specific pairwise force.

This exceptionally large magnon gap exceeds the total magnon bandwidth of ~70 meV and implies a marked departure from the Heisenberg model, in stark contrast to the case of the single-layer iridate Sr2IrO4. Analyzing the origin of these observations, we find that the giant magnon gap results from bond-directional pseudo-dipolar interactions that are strongly enhanced near the metal-insulator transition boundary. This suggests that novel magnetism, such as that inspired by the Kitaev model built on the pseudo-dipolar interactions, may emerge in small charge-gap iridates.

We report Eu L3-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) investigation of the electronic structure of EuB6. We observe that the RIXS spectral weight around 1.1 eV increases dramatically when the system is cooled below the ferromagnetic ordering temperature and follows the magnetic order parameter. This spectral feature is attributed to the inter-site excitation from the local 4f orbital to the spin-split 5d orbital on the neighboring site, illustrating the essential role of exchange splitting of the conducting electrons. Based on our density functional theory calculations, the RIXS data suggest that EuB6 at low temperature can be consistently described with a semi-metallic electronic structure with incomplete spin-polarization. We propose routes to achieve half-metallicity in EuB6, which utilize the strong tunability of the electronic structure against gate voltage, strain, and magnetic field.

We report inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the temperature dependence of phonon dispersion in the prototypical charge-density-wave (CDW) compound NbSe2. Surprisingly, acoustic phonons soften to zero frequency and become overdamped over an extended region around the CDW wavevector. This extended phonon collapse is dramatically different from the sharp cusp in the phonon dispersion expected from Fermi surface nesting. Instead, our experiments combined with ab initio calculations, show that it is the wavevector dependence of the electron-phonon coupling that drives the CDW formation in NbSe$_2$ and determines its periodicity. This mechanism explains the so far enigmatic behavior of CDW in NbSe$_2$ and may provide a new approach to other strongly correlated systems where electron-phonon coupling is important.

We measured phonon frequencies and linewidths in doped and undoped BaFe2As2 single crystals by inelastic x-ray scattering and compared our results with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In agreement with previous work, the calculated frequencies of some phonons depended on whether the ground state was magnetic or not and, in the former case, whether phonon wavevector was parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic ordering wavevector. The experimental results agreed better with the magnetic calculation than with zero Fe moment calculations, except the peak splitting expected due to magnetic domain twinning was not observed. Furthermore, phonon frequencies were unaffected by the breakdown of the magnetic ground state due to either do** or increased temperature. Based on these results we propose that phonons strongly couple not to the static order, but to high frequency magnetic fluctuations.

Phonon peak positions and linewidths did not vary significantly as a function of do** either by Co or by K. The linewidth of the Fe vibration shows unusual wavevector-dependence, which may be due to hybridization with in-plane modes. Comparison with the density functional theory shows significant difference for the energy of the As-As vibrations (Raman active at the zone center) but not for the Fe-As vibrations (infrared-active at the zone center). This behavior cannot be explained by a 10% softening of Fe-As interaction strength as proposed previously for in-plane polarized vibrations.

Magnetic Monopole is a cosequence of the existence of the duality symmetry in electromagnetics. Although, no conclusive experimental evidence have so far been found but the subject is still of much interest to physicist. The theory of magnetic monopoles was first proposed by Dirac in 1931 and soon after it was studied by physicist of many deciplines specially particle physics, quantum field theory and non-linear Soliton equations. One important consequence of the magnetic monopole theory is the quantization of the electric charge which was first derived by Dirac. In the definition of the classicaql magnetic monopole, the concept of Dirac string is used. dirac string is the locus of the points where the vector potential is nopt well-behave. On the other hand by introducing the idea of magnetic monopoles, Maxwell's equations became symmetrical with respect to the magnetic and electric fields, but they still remain unsymmetrical as far as the scalar and the vector potentials are concerned. In this work the electric and magnetic fields are redifined in termes of some new scalar and vector potentials, respectively, as a result of which the Maxwell's equations become symmetrical with respect to the potentials, too. One advantage of using this formulation is that one can discard the Dirac string all together. Finally, definition of the new potentials guarantees the lorentz invariance of equations.
