Abstract:
Relative permittivities, $\varepsilon_{r}$, and refractive indices, $n_{D}$, have been measured at (293.15-303.15) K, for the mixtures 1-pentanol + 2,5,8,11,14-pentaoxapentadecane (TEGDME) or TEGDME + octane. These data have been used, together with density measurements available in the literature, to calculate the correlation factors, $g_{K}$, according to the Kirkwood-Fröhlich equations. The cur…

The curves of the deviations of from the ideal behaviour, $Δ\varepsilon_{r}$, of the 1-pentanol + TEGDME system are shifted to high mole fractions of the alcohol, and show a rather large minimum. The shape of the $Δ\varepsilon_{r}$ curves of methanol + TEGDME or + polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether 250 (PEG-250) mixtures is similar. This reveals that polyethers can break the alcohol self-association even at high alkanol concentrations. The higher $Δ\varepsilon_{r}$ values of the methanol solutions are ascribed to large self-association of this alcohol. The $Δ\varepsilon_{r}$ curves of the 1-pentanol + dibutyl ether (DBE) system are nearly symmetrical, and the $Δ\varepsilon_{r}$ values are higher than those of the corresponding TEGDME mixture. This indicates that effects related to the alcohol self-association are much more relevant in the DBE system. These findings are supported by $g_{K}$ and molar polarization data. Values of molar refraction of 1-pentanol systems reveal that dispersion forces become more important in the sequence: octane < DBE < TEGDME. Such forces are also more relevant in the 1-pentanol + TEGDME system than in the methanol + TEGDME solution. The comparison of $\varepsilon_{r}$ and $g_{K}$ data for TEGDME or DBE + octane mixtures shows than the polyether is a more structured liquid.

The coexistence curves of the liquid-liquid equilibria (LLE) for systems of 2-phenoxyethanol (2PhEE) with heptane, octane, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane or ethylcyclohexane have been determined by the method of the critical opalescence using a laser scattering technique. All the curves show an upper critical solution temperature (UCST), have a rather horizontal top and their symmetry depends on the relative size of the mixture compounds. UCST values are higher for systems with linear alkanes than for solutions including cyclic alkanes. For these mixtures, the UCST increases with the size of the alkyl group attached to the cyclic part of the molecule. It is shown that interactions between alkoxyethanol molecules are stronger when the hydroxyether contains an aromatic group. Data are used to determine the critical exponent for the order parameter mole fraction. Values obtained are consistent with those provided by the Ising model or by the renormalization group theory.

The $V^{E}$ and $κ_{S}^{E}$ curves are shifted towards higher mole fractions of 2-propanone. The data haven interpreted assuming strong acetone-amine interactions, and weak structural effects.

These data have been used, together with density measurements available in the literature, to determine the correlation factor, $g_{K}$, for the studied systems according to the Kirkwood-Fröhlich equations. Results show that the existence of cyclic species of 1-pentanol are predominant at low concentrations of this alkanol when is mixed with octane. These species are broken in large extent by the more active molecules of oxaalkane in the dibutyl ether mixtures, which is in agreement with calorimetric data. The dibutyl ether + octane system does not show meaningful structure. These conclusions are confirmed by values of the molar polarization and by the temperature dependence of $\varepsilon_{r}$. The empirical expressions of Lorentz-Lorenz, Wiener, Heller, Gladstone-Dale and Newton correlate well the $n_{D}$ data.

When replacing dipropylamine by dibutylamine or triethylamine in the studied mixtures, the excess functions increase. This may be ascribed to the interactions between unlike molecules are more important in the former solutions. From the comparison with similar data obtained for 2-propanone + aniline, + N-methylaniline, or + pyridine systems, it is concluded that interactions between unlike molecules are stronger in mixtures containing aromatic amines. Free volume effects are present in solutions with dipropyl or dibutylamine as the $V^{E}$ curves are shifted towards higher mole fractions of 2-propanone.

Neutron capture cross-section measurements are fundamental in the study of the slow neutron capture (s-) process of nucleosynthesis and for the development of innovative nuclear technologies. One of the best suited methods to measure radiative neutron capture (n,$γ$) cross sections over the full stellar range of interest for all the applications is the time-of-flight (TOF) technique. Overcoming the current experimental limitations for TOF measurements, in particular on low mass unstable samples, requires the combination of facilities with high instantaneous flux, such as the CERN n_TOF facility, with detection systems with an enhanced detection sensitivity and high counting rate capabilities. This contribution presents a summary about the recent highlights in the field of (n,$γ$) measurements at n_TOF. The recent upgrades in the facility and in new detector concepts for (n,\g) measurements are described. Last, an overview is given on the existing limitations and prospects for TOF measurements involving unstable targets and the outlook for activation measurements at the brand new high-flux n_TOF-NEAR station.

Within this the work applicability of Physical LayerSecurity (PHYSEC) based key management within Long RangeWide Area Network (LoRaWAN) is proposed and evaluatedusing an experimental testbed. Since Internet of Things (IoT)technologies have been arising in past years, they have as wellattracted attention for possible cyber attacks. While LoRaWANalready provides many of the features needed in order to ensuresecurity goals such as data confidentiality and integrity, it lacksin measures such as secure key management and distributionschemes. Since conventional solutions are not feasible here, e.g.due to constraints on payload size and power consumption, wepropose the usage of PHYSEC based session key management, which can provide the respective measures in a more lightweightway. The results derived from our testbed show that it can be apromising alternative approach.

Context. Teegarden's Star is the brightest and one of the nearest ultra-cool dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood. For its late spectral type (M7.0V), the star shows relatively little activity and is a prime target for near-infrared radial velocity surveys such as CARMENES.
Aims. As part of the CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs, we obtained more than 200 radial-velocity measurements of Teegarden's Star and analysed them for planetary signals.
Methods. We find periodic variability in the radial velocities of Teegarden's Star. We also studied photometric measurements to rule out stellar brightness variations mimicking planetary signals.
Results. We find evidence for two planet candidates, each with $1.1M_\oplus$ minimum mass, orbiting at periods of 4.91 and 11.4 d, respectively. No evidence for planetary transits could be found in archival and follow-up photometry. Small photometric variability is suggestive of slow rotation and old age.
Conclusions. The two planets are among the lowest-mass planets discovered so far, and they are the first Earth-mass planets around an ultra-cool dwarf for which the masses have been determined using radial velocities.
