Abstract:
We experimentally demonstrate resonance of first-order vector vortex beams (VVB) with a triangular optical cavity. We also show that, due to their symmetry properties, the so-called radial and azimuthal VVBs do not resonate at the same cavity length, which could be explored to use the triangular resonator as a mode sorter. In addition, an intracavity Pancharatnam phase shifter (PPS) is implemented…

The process is applied to distinct fields produced by a Spatial Light Modulator, decomposing the generated paraxial field onto a basis of modes defined by the resonant modes of the optical cavity. We also present a proposal for the realization of a mode sorter based on a sequence of these cavities, without the need for optical isolation. We discuus its possible applications in sensitive measurements and distribution of information in optical systems. The high purity of the process should enable the use at the level of quantum information sharing.

We present a quantum optics approach for describing stimulated parametric down conversion in the two type-I crystal "sandwich" configuration, which allows for parametric interaction of vector vortex beams. We analyze the conditions for which phase conjugation of the seed vector beam occurs. We then use two strategies for defining generalized Stokes parameters to describe phase conjugation of vector vortex beams. These allow for geometrical representations, such as higher-order Poincaré spheres. Our results are useful for description and design of stimulated and spontaneous parametric down conversion experiments with vector vortex beams.

Optical modes possessing orbital angular momentum constitute a very useful platform for experimental studies on the quantum limits of Thermodynamics. Here, we present experimental results for entangled photon pairs subjected to thin turbulence simulated with spatial light modulators and interpret them in the context of the generalized Jarzysnki's fluctuation relation. By holographic measurement of the orbital angular momentum, we obtain the work distribution produced by the turbulence for single and double-sided turbulence channels. The use of the Klyshko's advanced wave picture allows us to interpret the experimental scheme as two-way processes in a fully quantum picture.

Vector vortex beams have played a fundamental role in the better understanding of coherence and polarization. They are described by spatially inhomogeneous polarization states, which present a rich optical mode structure that has attracted much attention for applications in optical communications, imaging, spectroscopy and metrology. However, this complex mode structure can be quite detrimental when propagation effects such as turbulence and birefringence perturb the beam. Optical phase conjugation has been proposed as a method to recover an optical beam from perturbations. Here we demonstrate full phase conjugation of vector vortex beams using three-wave mixing. Our scheme exploits a fast non-linear process that can be conveniently controlled via the pump beam. Our results pave the way for sophisticated, practical applications of vector beams.

The advanced-wave picture is "... an intuitive treatment of two-photon correlation with the help of the concept of an effective field acting upon one of the two detectors and formed by parametric conversion of the advanced wave emitted by the second detector ..." [A. V. Belinskii and D. N. Klyshko, JETP 78, 259 (1994)]. This quote from Belinskii and Klyshko nicely describes the concept of the advanced-wave picture; an intuitive tool for designing and predicting results from coincidence-based two-photon experiments. Up to now, the advanced-wave picture has been considered primarily for the case of an ideal plane-wave pump beam and only for design purposes. Here we study the advanced wave picture for a structured pump beam and in the context of stimulated emission provoked by an auxiliary input laser beam. This suggests stimulated parametric down-conversion as a useful experimental tool for testing the experimental sets designed with the advanced-wave picture. We present experimental results demonstrating the strategy of designing the experiment with advanced-wave picture and testing with stimulated emission.

Non-equilibrium thermodynamics and quantum information theory are interrelated research fields witnessing an increasing interest, both theoretical and experimental. This is manly due to the broadness of these theories, which found applications in many different fields of science, ranging from biology to the foundations of physics. Here, by employing the orbital angular momentum of light, we propose a new platform for studying non-equilibrium properties of high dimensional quantum systems. Specifically, we use Laguerre-Gaussian beams to emulate the energy eigenstates of a two-dimension quantum harmonic oscillator having angular momentum. These light beams are subjected to a process realized by a spatial light modulator and the corresponding work distribution is experimentally reconstructed employing a two-point measurement scheme. The Jarzynski fluctuation relation is then verified. We also demonstrate the operation of the system as a Maxwell's demon.

We present a detailed analysis of the multimode quantum state embedded in an optical frequency comb generated by a Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillator (SPOPO). The full covariance matrix of the state is obtained with homodyne detection where the local oscillator is spectrally controlled with pulse sha** techniques. The resulting matrix reveals genuine multipartite entanglement. Additionally, the beam is comprised of several independent eigenmodes that correspond to specific pulse shapes. The experimental data is confirmed with numerical simulations. Finally, the potential to create continuous-variable cluster states from the quantum comb is analyzed. Multiple cluster states are shown to be simultaneously embedded in the SPOPO state, and these states can be revealed by a suitable basis change applied to the measured covariance matrix.

Highly entangled quantum networks cluster states lie at the heart of recent approaches to quantum computing \cite{Nielsen2006,Lloyd2012}. Yet, the current approach for constructing optical quantum networks does so one node at a time \cite{Furusawa2008,Furusawa2009,Peng2012}, which lacks scalability. Here we demonstrate the \emph{single-step} fabrication of a multimode quantum network from the parametric downconversion of femtosecond frequency combs. Ultrafast pulse sha** \cite{weiner2000} is employed to characterize the comb's spectral entanglement \cite{vanLoock2003}. Each of the 511 possible bipartitions among ten spectral regions is shown to be entangled; furthermore, an eigenmode decomposition reveals that eight independent quantum channels \cite{Braunstein2005} (qumodes) are subsumed within the comb. This multicolor entanglement imports the classical concept of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) to the quantum domain by playing upon frequency entanglement as a means to elevate quantum channel capacity. The quantum frequency comb is easily addressable, robust with respect to decoherence, and scalable, which renders it a unique tool for quantum information.

Multimode nonclassical states of light are an essential resource in quantum computation with continuous variables, for example in cluster state computation. They can be generated either by mixing different squeezed light sources using linear optical operations, or directly in a multimode optical device. In parallel, frequency combs are perfect tools for high precision metrological applications and for quantum time transfer. Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillators (SPOPOs) have been theoretically shown to produce multimode non-classical frequency combs. In this paper, we present the first experimental generation and characterization of a femtosecond quantum frequency comb generated by a SPOPO. In particular, we give the experimental evidence of the multimode nature of the generated quantum state and, by studying the spectral noise distribution of this state, we show that at least three nonclassical independent modes are required to describe it.
