Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a promising technology to enhance the performance of sixth-generation (6G) and beyond communication systems. The passive nature of RISs and their large number of reflecting elements pose challenges to the channel estimation process. The associated complexity further escalates when the channel coefficients are fast-varying as in scenarios with user mobility. In this paper, we propose an extended channel estimation framework for RIS-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) integrated with an autoregressive (AR) predictor. The implemented framework is designed for identifying the aging pattern and predicting enhanced estimates of the wireless channels in correlated fast-fading environments. Insightful simulation results demonstrate that our proposed CNN-AR approach is robust to channel aging, exhibiting a high-precision estimation accuracy. The results also show that our approach can achieve high spectral efficiency and low pilot overhead compared to traditional methods.

In this letter, we study an attack that leverages a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to induce harmful interference toward multiple users in massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems during the data transmission phase. We propose an efficient and flexible weighted-sum projected gradient-based algorithm for the attacker to optimize the RIS reflection coefficients without knowing legitimate user channels. To counter such a threat, we propose two reception strategies. Simulation results demonstrate that our malicious algorithm outperforms baseline strategies while offering adaptability for targeting specific users. At the same time, our results show that our mitigation strategies are effective even if only an imperfect estimate of the cascade RIS channel is available.

This paper delves into the unexplored frequency-dependent characteristics of beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (BD-RISs). A generalized practical frequency-dependent reflection model is proposed as a fundamental framework for configuring fully-connected and group-connected RISs in a multi-band multi-base station (BS) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network. Leveraging this practical model, multi-objective optimization strategies are formulated to maximize the received power at multiple users connected to different BSs, each operating under a distinct carrier frequency. By relying on matrix theory and exploiting the symmetric structure of the reflection matrices inherent to BD-RISs, relaxed tractable versions of the challenging problems are achieved for scenarios with obstructed and unobstructed direct channel links. The relaxed solutions are then combined with codebook-based approaches to configure the practical capacitance values for the BD-RISs. Simulation results reveal the frequency-dependent behaviors of different RIS architectures and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes. Notably, BD-RISs exhibit high reflection performance across the intended frequency range, remarkably outperforming conventional single-connected RISs. Moreover, the proposed optimization approaches prove effective in enabling the targeted operation of BD-RISs across one or more carrier frequencies. The results also shed light on the potential for harmful interference in the absence of synchronization between RISs and adjacent BSs.

The emerging concept of extremely-large holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO), beneficial from compactly and densely packed cost-efficient radiating meta-atoms, has been demonstrated for enhanced degrees of freedom even in pure line-of-sight conditions, enabling tremendous multiplexing gain for the next-generation communication systems. Most of the reported works focus on energy and spectrum efficiency, path loss analyses, and channel modeling. The extension to secure communications remains unexplored. In this paper, we theoretically characterize the secrecy capacity of the HMIMO network with multiple legitimate users and one eavesdropper while taking into consideration artificial noise and max-min fairness. We formulate the power allocation (PA) problem and address it by following successive convex approximation and Taylor expansion. We further study the effect of fixed PA coefficients, imperfect channel state information, inter-element spacing, and the number of Eve's antennas on the sum secrecy rate. Simulation results show that significant performance gain with more than 100\% increment in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime for the two-user case is obtained by exploiting adaptive/flexible PA compared to the case with fixed PA coefficients.

This paper explores the use of semantic knowledge inherent in the cyber-physical system (CPS) under study in order to minimize the use of explicit communication, which refers to the use of physical radio resources to transmit potentially informative data. It is assumed that the acquired data have a function in the system, usually related to its state estimation, which may trigger control actions. We propose that a semantic-functional approach can leverage the semantic-enabled implicit communication while guaranteeing that the system maintains functionality under the required performance. We illustrate the potential of this proposal through simulations of a swarm of drones jointly performing remote sensing in a given area. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method offers the best design option regarding the ability to accomplish a previously established task -- remote sensing in the addressed case -- while minimising the use of radio resources by controlling the trade-offs that jointly determine the CPS performance and its effectiveness in the use of resources. In this sense, we establish a fundamental relationship between energy, communication, and functionality considering a given end application.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) bring various benefits to the current and upcoming wireless networks, including enhanced spectrum and energy efficiency, soft handover, transmission reliability, and even localization accuracy. These remarkable improvements result from the reconfigurability, programmability, and adaptation capabilities of RISs for fine-tuning radio propagation environments, which can be realized in a cost- and energy-efficient manner. In this paper, we focus on the upgrade of the existing fifth-generation (5G) cellular network with the introduction of an RIS owning a full-dimensional uniform planar array structure for unleashing advanced three-dimensional connectivity. The deployed RIS is exploited for serving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) flying in the sky with ultra-high data rate, a challenging task to be achieved with conventional base stations (BSs) that are designed mainly to serve ground users. By taking into account the line-of-sight probability for the RIS-UAV and BS-UAV links, we formulate the average achievable rate, analyze the effect of environmental parameters, and make insightful performance comparisons. Simulation results show that the deployment of RISs can bring impressive gains and significantly outperform conventional RIS-free 5G networks.

By modeling the effects of polarization interference, an in-depth theoretical analysis is carried out, in which we derive tight closed-form approximations for the outage probabilities and ergodic sum-rates. Simulation results validate the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach. For instance, under low to moderate cross-polar interference, our results show that the proposed dual-polarized MIMO-RSMA strategy outperforms the single-polarized MIMO-RSMA counterpart for all considered levels of residual SIC error.

The polarization domain provides an extra degree of freedom (DoF) for improving the performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. This paper takes advantage of this additional DoF to alleviate practical issues of successive interference cancellation (SIC) in rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) schemes. Specifically, we propose three dual-polarized downlink transmission approaches for a massive MIMO-RSMA network under the effects of polarization interference and residual errors of imperfect SIC. The first approach implements polarization multiplexing for transmitting the users' data messages, which removes the need to execute SIC in the reception. The second approach transmits replicas of users' messages in the two polarizations, which enables users to exploit diversity through the polarization domain. The third approach, in its turn, employs the original SIC-based RSMA technique per polarization, and this allows the BS to transmit two independent superimposed data streams simultaneously. An in-depth theoretical analysis is carried out, in which we derive tight closed-form approximations for the outage probabilities of the three proposed approaches. Accurate approximations for the ergodic sum-rates of the two first schemes are also derived. Simulation results validate the theoretical analysis and confirm the effectiveness of the proposed schemes. For instance, under low to moderate cross-polar interference, the results show that, even under high levels of residual SIC error, our dual-polarized MIMO-RSMA strategies outperform the conventional single-polarized MIMO-RSMA counterpart. It is also shown that the performance of all RSMA schemes is impressively higher than that of single and dual-polarized massive MIMO systems employing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal multiple access (OMA) techniques.

In this paper, we study the problem of minimizing the uplink aggregate transmit power subject to the users' minimum data rate and peak power constraint on each sub-channel for multi-cell wireless networks. To address this problem, a distributed sub-optimal joint power and rate control algorithm called JPRC is proposed, which is applicable to both non-orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) schemes. Employing JPRC, each user updates its transmit power using only local information. Simulation results illustrate that the JPRC algorithm can reach a performance close to that obtained by the optimal solution via exhaustive search, with the NOMA scheme achieving a 59\% improvement on the aggregate transmit power over the OFDMA counterpart. It is also shown that the JPRC algorithm can outperform existing distributed power control algorithms.

By considering the downlink of a multi-cluster scenario, the IRSs assist the base station (BS) to multiplex subsets of users in the polarization domain. Our novel strategy alleviates the impact of imperfect SIC and enables users to exploit polarization diversity with near-zero inter-subset interference. Our results show that when the IRSs are large enough, the proposed scheme always outperforms conventional massive MIMO-NOMA and MIMO-OMA systems even if SIC error propagation is present. It is also confirmed that dual-polarized IRSs can make cross-polar transmissions beneficial to the users, allowing them to improve their performance through polarization diversity.

In this paper, we use this feature to improve the performance of dual-polarized massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) under imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). To this end, the IRSs are optimized to mitigate transmissions originated at the BS from the interfering polarization. The formulated optimization is transformed into quadratic constrained quadratic sub-problems, which makes it possible to obtain the optimal solution via interior-points methods. We also derive analytically a closed-form expression for the users' ergodic rates by considering large numbers of reflecting elements. This is followed by representative simulation examples and comprehensive discussions. The results show that when the IRSs are large enough, the proposed scheme always outperforms conventional massive MIMO-NOMA and MIMO-OMA systems even if SIC error propagation is present. It is also confirmed that dual-polarized IRSs can make cross-polar transmissions beneficial to the users, allowing them to improve their performance through diversity.

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are two key techniques for enabling massive connectivity in future wireless networks. A massive MIMO-NOMA system can deliver remarkable spectral improvements and low communication latency. Nevertheless, the uncontrollable stochastic behavior of the wireless channels can still degrade its performance. In this context, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has arisen as a promising technology for smartly overcoming the harmful effects of the wireless environment. The disruptive IRS concept of controlling the propagation channels via software can provide attractive performance gains to the communication networks, including higher data rates, improved user fairness, and, possibly, higher energy efficiency. In this article, in contrast to the existing literature, we demonstrate the main roles of IRSs in MIMO-NOMA systems. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been recently considered as one of the emerging technologies for future communication systems by leveraging the tuning capabilities of their reflecting elements. In this paper, we investigate the potential of an RIS-based architecture for uplink sensor data transmission in an ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) context. In particular, we propose an RIS-aided grant-free access scheme for an industrial control scenario, aiming to exploit diversity and achieve improved reliability performance. We consider two different resource allocation schemes for the uplink transmissions, i.e., dedicated and shared slot assignment, and three different receiver types, namely the zero-forcing, the minimum mean squared error (MMSE), and the MMSE-successive interference cancellation receivers. Our extensive numerical evaluation in terms of outage probability demonstrates the gains of our approach in terms of reliability, resource efficiency, and capacity and for different configurations of the RIS properties. An RIS-aided grant-free access scheme combined with advanced receivers is shown to be a well-suited option for uplink URLLC.

This paper presents the first comprehensive tutorial on a promising research field located at the frontier of two well-established domains: Neurosciences and wireless communications, motivated by the ongoing efforts to define how the sixth generation of mobile networks (6G) will be. In particular, this tutorial first provides a novel integrative approach that bridges the gap between these two, seemingly disparate fields. Then, we present the state-of-the-art and key challenges of these two topics. In particular, we propose a novel systematization that divides the contributions into two groups, one focused on what neurosciences will offer to 6G in terms of new applications and systems architecture (Neurosciences for Wireless), and the other focused on how wireless communication theory and 6G systems can provide new ways to study the brain (Wireless for Neurosciences). For the first group, we concretely explain how current scientific understanding of the brain would enable new application for 6G within the context of a new type of service that we dub braintype communications and that has more stringent requirements than human- and machine-type communication. In this regard, we expose the key requirements of brain-type communication services and we discuss how future wireless networks can be equipped to deal with such services. Meanwhile, for the second group, we thoroughly explore modern communication system paradigms, including Internet of Bio-nano Things and chaosbased communications, in addition to highlighting how complex systems tools can help bridging 6G and neuroscience applications. Brain-controlled vehicles are then presented as our case study. All in all, this tutorial is expected to provide a largely missing articulation between these two emerging fields while delineating concrete ways to move forward in such an interdisciplinary endeavor.
