We have combined DFT calculations with the Boltzmann semiclassical transport theory to investigate the effect of selective hydrogenation on the thermoelectric properties of tetra-penta-deca-hexagonal graphene (TPDH-gr), a recently proposed new 2D carbon allotrope. Our results show that the Seebeck coefficient is enhanced after hydrogenation. The conductivity along the x direction is increased almost eight times while being almost suppressed along the y direction. This behavior can be understood in terms of the electronic structure changes due to the appearance of a Dirac-like cone after the selective hydrogenation. Consistent with the literature, the electronic contribution to thermal conductivity displays the same qualitative behavior as the conductivity, as expected from the Wiedemann-Franz law. The increase in thermal conductivity with temperature limits the material's power factor. The significant increase in the Seebeck coefficient and conductivity increases also contribute to the thermal conductivity increase. These results show that hydrogenation is an effective method to improve the TPDH-gr thermoelectric properties, and this carbon allotrope can be an effective material for thermoelectric applications.

Abstract:
We introduce an analog model for the conformally coupled scalar field on the BTZ black hole. The model is based on the propagation of acoustic waves in a Laval nozzle. Since the BTZ black hole is not a globally hyperbolic spacetime, the dynamics of the scalar field is not well defined until extra boundary conditions are prescribed at its spatial infinity. We show that quasinormal modes (QNMs) sati…

Since the BTZ black hole is not a globally hyperbolic spacetime, the dynamics of the scalar field is not well defined until extra boundary conditions are prescribed at its spatial infinity. We show that quasinormal modes (QNMs) satisfying Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin boundary conditions in the BTZ black hole can be interpreted in terms of ordinary QNMs defined with respect to an appropriately extended nozzle. We also discuss the stability of our model with respect to small perturbations.

In Ref. [1], exact (not only conformally related) analogue models for the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström spacetimes were found. The background non-relativistic fluid flow was sustained by an external body force which is not affected by the linearised fluctuations. Following a different route, by modelling the external force as the gradient of an external pressure, it was shown in~\cite{bilic} that the speed of sound is significantly modified. This effective speed of sound turns out to be inconsistent with the continuity equation. In this comment we analyse these two contradictory conclusions. We first show that the heuristic justification for the introduction of the external force via a variational principle given in Ref. [2] is conceptually incorrect. Then, by adding the external force appropriately, we show that the conclusions in [1] remain valid.

Abstract:
We present an analog model for the Bañados, Teitelboim, Zanelli (BTZ) black hole based on a hydrodynamical flow. We numerically solve the fully nonlinear hydrodynamic equations of motion and observe the excitation and decay of the analog BTZ quasinormal modes in the process. We consider both a small perturbation in the steady state configuration of the fluid and a large perturbation; the latter could be regarded as an example of formation of the analog (acoustic) BTZ black hole.

Abstract:
We revisit the propagation of classical scalar fields in a spacetime which is asymptotically anti-de Sitter. The lack of global hyperbolicity of the underlying background gives rise to an ambiguity in the dynamical evolution of solutions of the wave equation, requiring the prescription of extra boundary conditions at the conformal infinity to be fixed. The lack of global hyperbolicity of the underlying background gives rise to an ambiguity in the dynamical evolution of solutions of the wave equation, requiring the prescription of extra boundary conditions at the conformal infinity to be fixed. We show that the only boundary conditions tha are compatible with the hypothesis that the system is isolated, as defined by the (improved) energy-momentum tensor, are of Dirichlet and Neumann types.

We present analogue models for the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström (RN) spacetimes based on unidirectional hydrodynamic flows. We show that, with appropriate coordinate transformations, sound waves in a moving fluid propagate as scalar fields at the equatorial sections of Schwarzschild and RN black holes. The coordinate associated with the direction of the flow plays the role of the radial coordinate in standard Schwarzschild/RN coordinates, while the transversal spatial coordinate is related to the angular coordinate on each equatorial slice. The magnitude of the flow velocity is related to the mass and charge of the analogue black hole. Physical quantities like pressure and density remain finite at the analogue horizon, thereby resulting in sound waves that are well defined almost everywhere, except possibly at the analogue black hole singularity.

This study aimed to investigate the antitumor effect of ultrasmall gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), around 3 nm, stabilized by the anionic polysaccharide gum arabic (GA-AuNPs). The focus was downregulation of cancer hallmarks of aggressive tumors, using a highly metastatic model of melanoma. We first demonstrated that GA-AuNPs showed excellent stability under biological environment. Non-cytotoxic concentrations to seven different cell lines, including tumorigenic and non-tumorigenic cells, were determined by standard 2D in vitro assays. Gold concentrations below 2.4 mg L-1 were non-cytotoxic and therefore chosen for further analyses. Cells exposed to GA-AuNPs were uptaken by melanoma cells through endocytic processes. Next, we described remarkable biological properties using non-cytotoxic concentrations of this nanomaterial. Invasion through an extracellular matrix barrier as well as 3D growth capacity (anchorage-independent colony formation and spheroids growth) were negatively affected by 2.4 mg L-1 GA-AuNPs. Additionally, exposed spheroids showed morphological changes, suggesting that GA-AuNPs could penetrate into the preformed tumor and affect its integrity. All together these results demonstrate that side effects, such as cytotoxicity, can be avoided by choosing the right concentration, nevertheless, preserving desirable effects such as modulation of key tumor cell malignancy features.
