In this paper the vacuum energy density and generation of topological mass are investigated for a system of a real and complex scalar fields interacting with each other. In addition to that, it is also included the quartic self-interaction for each one of the fields. The condition imposed on the real field is the periodic condition, while the complex field obey a quasi-periodic condition. The system is placed in a scenario where the CPT-even aether-type Lorentz symmetry violation takes place. We allow that the Lorentz violation affects the fields with different intensities. The vacuum energy density, its loop correction, and the topological mass are evaluated analytically. It is also discussed the possibility of different vacuum states and their corresponding stability requirements, which depends on the conditions imposed on the fields, the interaction coupling constants and also the Lorentz violation parameters. The formalism used here to perform this investigation is the effective potential one, which is written as a loop expansion via path integral in quantum field theory.

Here we analyze the expectation value of the fermionic condensate and the energy-momentum tensor associated with a massive charged fermionic quantum field with a nonzero chemical potential propagating in a magnetic-flux-carrying cosmic string with compactified dimension in thermal equilibrium at finite temperature $T$. We assume that, in addition to the magnetic field flux running along the string's core, a magnetic flux enclosed by the compact dimension is presented, and the field interacts with both. The expectation values of the fermionic condensate and the energy-momentum tensor are expressed as the sum of vacuum expectation values and the finite temperature contributions coming from the particles and antiparticles excitation. As consequence of the compactification, the thermal corrections of these observable are decomposed in a part induced by pure cosmic string spacetime, plus a contribution induced by the compactification. The thermal expectations values of the fermionic condensate and the energy-momentum tensor are even periodic functions of the magnetic flux with period being the quantum flux, and also even functions of the chemical potential. Because the analyses of vacuum expectation of the fermionic condensate and energy-momentum tensor have been developed in literature, here we are mainly interested in the investigation of the thermal corrections. In this way we explicitly study how these observable behaves in the limits of low and high temperatures, and also for points near the string. Besides the analytical discussions, we included some graphs that exhibit the behavior of these observable for different values of the physical parameters of the model.

In this paper we investigate the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor associated to a charged massive scalar quantum field in a $(1+D)$-dimensional de Sitter spacetime induced by a plate (flat boundary) and a carrying-magnetic-flux cosmic string. In our analysis we admit that the flat boundary is perpendicular to the string, and the scalar field obeys the Robin boundary condition on the plate. In order to do develop this analysis, we obtain the complete set of normalized positive-energy solution of the Klein-Gordon equation compatible with the model setup. Having obtained these bosonic modes, we construct the corresponding Wightman function. The latter is given by the sum of two terms: one associated with the boundary-free spacetime, and the other induced by the flat boundary. Although we have imposed the Robin boundary condition on the field, we apply our formalism considering specifically the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The corresponding parts have opposite signs. Because the analysis of bosonic vacuum polarization in boundary-free de Sitter space and in presence of a cosmic string, in some sense, has been developed in the literature, here we are mainly interested in the calculations of the effects induced by the boundary. In this way, closed expressions for the corresponding expectation values are provided, as well as their asymptotic behavior in different limiting regions. We show that the conical topology due to the cosmic string enhances the boundary induced vacuum polarization effects for both field squared and the energy-momentum tensor, compared to the case of a boundary in pure de Sitter spacetime. Moreover, the presence of cosmic string and boundary induce non-zero stress along the direction normal to the boundary. The corresponding vacuum force acting on the boundary is also investigated.

We consider the brane parallel to the anti-de Sitter boundary and the cosmic string orthogonal to them. Moreover, we assume that the field obeys the Robin boundary condition on the brane. Because the brane divides the space into two regions with different properties of the quantum vacuum, we calculate the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor (EMT) in each region. To develop these analyses, we have constructed the positive frequency Wightman function for both regions. The latter is decomposed in a part associated with the anti-de Sitter bulk in the presence of a cosmic string only, and the other part induced by the brane. The vacuum polarization effects associated with the higher-dimensional anti-de Sitter bulk in the presence of cosmic string have been developed in the literature, and here we are mainly interested in the effects induced by the brane. We show that the VEVs of the field squared and the components of the EMT induced by the cosmic string are finite on the brane. Explicitly, we compare these observables with the corresponding ones induced by the brane only, and show that near the brane the contribution induced by the latter is larger than the one induced by the string; however, for points distant from the brane the situation is reversed. Moreover, some asymptotic expressions for the VEV of the field squared and EMT are provided for specific limiting cases of the physical parameters of the model. Also, an application of our results is given for a cosmic string in the $Z_2$-symmetric Randall-Sundrum braneworld model with a single brane.

In this paper we investigate the bosonic Casimir effect in a Lorentz-violating symmetry scenario. The theoretical model adopted consists of a real massive scalar quantum field confined in a region between two large parallel plates, having its dynamics governed by a modified Klein-Gordon equation that presents a Lorentz symmetry breaking term. In this context we admit that the quantum field obeys specific boundary conditions on the plates. The Lorentz-violating symmetry is implemented by the presence of an arbitrary constant space-like vector in a CPT-even aether-like approach, considering a direct coupling between this vector with the derivative of the field in higher order. The modification on the Klein-Gordon equation produces important corrections on the Casimir energy and pressure. Thus, we show that these corrections strongly depend on the order of the higher derivative term and the specific direction of the constant vector, as well as the boundary conditions considered.

In this paper we analyze the expectation value of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor associated with a massive charged scalar quantum field with a nonzero chemical potential propagating in a high-dimensional compactified cosmic string spacetime in thermal equilibrium at finite temperature $T$. Moreover, we assume that the charged quantum field interacts with a very thin magnetic flux running along the core of the idealized cosmic string, and with a magnetic flux enclosed by the compact dimension. These observables are expressed as the vacuum expectation values and the finite temperature contributions coming from the particles and antiparticles excitations. Due to the compactification, the thermal corrections can be decomposed in a part induced by the cosmic string spacetime without compactification, plus a contribution induced by the compactification. This decompositions explicitly follows from the Abel-Plana formula used to proceed the summation over the discrete quantum number associated with the quasiperiodic condition imposed on the quantum field along the compact dimension. The expectations values of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor are even periodic functions of the magnetic flux with period being the quantum flux, and also even functions of the chemical potential. Our main objectives in this paper concern in the investigation of the thermal corrections only. In this way we explicitly calculate the behavior of these observables in the limits of low and high temperature. We show that the temperature enhance the induced densities. In addition some graphs are also included in order to exhibit these behaviors.

The Lorentz symmetry violation is introduced by CPT-even, aether-like approach, considering a direct coupling between the derivative of the the scalar field with two orthogonal constant vectors. The main objective of this paper is to analyze the modification on the Casimir energy and pressure caused by the anisotropy of the space-time as consequence of these couplings. For a massive scalar field with a general curvature coupling parameter, we investigate the finite temperature contributions to the Hadamard function and to the charge and current densities in the geometry of a magnetic flux carrying generalized cosmic string embedded in $(D+1)$-dimensional locally AdS spacetime with a compactified spatial dimension. For $D=4$, the geometry on the AdS boundary, in the context of the AdS/CFT duality, corresponds to a cosmic string as a linear defect, compactified along its axis. In contrast to the case of the Minkowski bulk, the upper bound on the chemical potential does not depend on the field mass and is completely determined by the length of compact dimension and by the enclosed magnetic flux. The only nonzero components correspond to the charge density, to the azimuthal current and to the current along the compact dimension. They are periodic functions of magnetic fluxes with the period equal to the flux quantum. The charge density is an odd function and the currents are even functions of the chemical potential. At high temperatures the influence of the gravitational field and topology on the charge density is subdominant and the leading term in the corresponding expansion coincides with that for the charge density in the Minkowski spacetime. The current densities are topology-induced quantities and their behavior at high temperatures is completely different with the linear dependence on the temperature. At small temperatures and for chemical potentials smaller than the critical value, the thermal expectation values are exponentially suppressed for both massive and massless fields.

It is assumed that for both those sources the energy density can be either positive or negative. Exact solutions of the cosmological equations are provided for flat models. For models with curved space and with zero cosmological constant the general solutions are expressed in terms of the hypergeometric function. The qualitative evolution is described for all values of the equation of state parameter. We specify the values of that parameter and the combinations of the signs for the cosmological constant and matter energy density for which the cosmological dynamics is nonsingular. An example is considered with positive cosmological constant and negative matter energy density induced by the polarization of the hyperbolic vacuum.

In this paper we study the quantum brownian motion of a scalar point particle in the analog Friedman-Robertson-Walker spacetime in the presence of a disclination, in a condensed matter system. The analog spacetime is obtained as an effective description of a Bose-Einstein condensate in terms of quantum excitations of sound waves, named phonons. The dynamics of the phonons is described by a massless real scalar field whose modes are also subjected to a quasi-periodic condition. In this sense, we find exact solutions for the real scalar field in this scenario and calculate the two-point function which makes possible to analyze the mean squared velocity dispersion of the particle in all directions. We, thus, analyze some interesting particular cases and show some graphs where it is possible to see the consistency of our results.

We consider the vortex as an idealized topological defect, i.e., very thin, straight and carrying a magnetic flux running along its core. Besides the direct coupling of the fermionic field with the iso-vector gauge field, we also admit the coupling with the scalar sector of the non-Abelian vortex system, expressed as a vector in the three-dimensional isospace. Due to this interaction, the FC is expressed as the sum of two contributions associated with the two different effective masses for the $\pm 1/2$ fermionic components of the isospin operator, $τ^3/2$. The VEV of the energy-tensor also presents a similar structure. The vacuum energy density is equal to the radial and axial stresses. As to the azimuthal one, it is expressed in terms of the radial derivative of energy-density. Regarding to the magnetic flux, both, the FC and the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, can be positive or negative. Another interesting consequence of the interaction with the bosonic sector, the FC and VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, present different intensity for different values of the ratio between the scalar coupling constant and the mass of the fermionic field. This is a new feature that the system presents.

The brane is parallel to the AdS boundary and it divides the space into two regions with distinct properties of the fermionic vacuum. For two types of boundary conditions on the field operator and for the fields realizing two inequivalent representations of the Clifford algebra, the brane-induced contributions in VEVs are explicitly separated. The VEVs are even periodic functions of the magnetic flux, confined in the core, with the period of flux quantum. Near the horizon the FC and the vacuum energy-momentum tensor are dominated by the brane-free contribution, whereas the brane-induced part dominates in the region near the brane. Both the contributions vanish on the AdS boundary. At large distances from the cosmic string, the topological contributions in the VEVs, as functions of the proper distance, exhibit an inverse power-law decrease in the region between the brane and AdS horizon and an exponential decrease in the region between the brane and AdS boundary. We show that the FC and the vacuum energy density can be either positive or negative, depending on the distance from the brane. Applications are discussed in fermionic models invariant under the charge conjugation and parity transformation and also in $Z_{2}$% -symmetric braneworld models. By the limiting transition we derive the expressions of the FC and the vacuum energy-momentum tensor for a cosmic string on 5-dimensional Minkowski bulk in the presence of a boundary perpendicular to the string.

In order to fix the renormalization ambiguity for massive fields an additional condition is imposed, requiring the condensate to vanish in the infinite mass limit. For large values of the field mass the condensate decays exponentially in odd dimensional spacetimes and follows a power law decay in even dimensional spacetimes. We investigate topological effects of a cosmic string and compactification of a spatial dimension on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a fermionic field in (4+1)-dimensional locally AdS spacetime. The contribution induced by the compactification is explicitly extracted by using the Abel-Plana summation formula. The mean energy-momentum tensor is diagonal and the vacuum stresses along the direction perpendicular to the AdS boundary and along the cosmic string are equal to the energy density. All the components are even periodic functions of the magnetic fluxes inside the string core and enclosed by compact dimension, with the period equal to the flux quantum. The vacuum energy density can be either positive or negative, depending on the values of the parameters and the distance from the string. The topological contributions in the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor vanish on the AdS boundary. Near the string the effects of compactification and gravitational field are weak and the leading term in the asymptotic expansion coincides with the corresponding VEV in (4+1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. At large distances, the decay of the cosmic string induced contribution in the vacuum energy-momentum tensor, as a function of the proper distance from the string, follows a power law. For a cosmic string in the Minkowski bulk and for massive fields the corresponding fall off is exponential. Within the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the geometry for conformal field theory on the AdS boundary corresponds to the standard cosmic string in (3+1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime compactified along its axis.

We investigate the fermion condensate (FC) for a massive spinor field on background of the 5-dimensional locally anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime with a compact dimension and in the presence of a cosmic string carrying a magnetic flux. The FC is decomposed into two contributions. The first one corresponds to the geometry without compactification and the second one is induced by the compactification. Depending on the values of the parameters, the total FC can be either positive or negative. As a limiting case, the expression for the FC on locally Minkowski spacetime is derived. It vanishes for a massless fermion field and the nonzero FC on the AdS bulk in the massless case is an effect induced by gravitation. This shows that the gravitational field may essentially influence the parameters space for phase transitions. For a massive field the FC diverges on the string as the inverse cube of the proper distance from the string. In the case of a massless field, depending on the magnetic flux along the string and planar angle deficit, the limiting value of the FC on the string can be either finite or infinite. At large distances, the decay of the FC as a function of the distance from the string is power law for both cases of massive and massless fields. For a cosmic string on the Minkowski bulk and for a massive field the decay is exponential. The topological part in the FC vanishes on the AdS boundary. We show that the FCs coincide for the fields realizing two inequivalent irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra. In the special case of the zero planar angle deficit, the results presented in this paper describe Aharonov-Bohm-type effects induced by magnetic fluxes in curved spacetime.

The brane is parallel to the AdS boundary and the cosmic string is orthogonal to the brane. Two types of boundary conditions are considered on the brane that include the MIT bag boundary condition and the boundary conditions in Z2-symmetric braneworld models. The brane divides the space into two regions with different properties of the vacuum state. The only nonzero component of the current density is along the azimuthal direction and in both the regions the corresponding VEV is decomposed into the brane-free and brane-induced contributions. The latter vanishes on the string and near the string the total current is dominated by the brane-free part. At large distances from the string and in the region between the brane and AdS horizon the decay of the brane-induced current density, as a function of the proper distance, is power-law for both massless and massive fields. In our analysis we assume that the quantum field obeys Dirichlet or Neunmann conditions on the flat boundary. In order to develop this analysis we calculate the corresponding Wightman function. As consequence of the boundary, the Wightamn function is expressed in term of two contributions: The first one corresponds to the boundary-free cosmic string Wightman function, while the second one is induced by the boundary. The boundary-induced contributions have opposite signs for Dirichlet and Newman scalars. Because the analysis of vacuum current and polarization effects in the boundary-free cosmic string spacetime have been developed in the literature, here we are mainly interested in the calculations of the effects induced by the boundary. Regarding to the induced current, we show that, depending on the condition adopted, the boundary-induced azimuthal current can cancel or intensifies the total induced azimuthal current on the boundary; moreover, the boundary-induced azimuthal current is a periodic odd function of the magnetic flux. As to the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor, the boundary-induced contributions are even functions of magnetic flux. In particular, we consider some special cases of the boundary-induced part of the energy density and evaluate the normal vacuum force on the boundary.

A Lorentz symmetry violation aether-type theoretical model is considered to investigate the Casimir effect and the generation of topological mass associated with a self-interacting massive scalar fields obeying Dirichlet, Newman and mixed boundary conditions on two large and parallel plates. By adopting the path integral approach we found the effective potential at one- and two-loop corrections which provides both the energy density and topological mass when taken in the ground state of the scalar field. We then analyse how these quantities are affected by the Lorentz symmetry violation and compare the results with previous ones found in literature.

In this paper, we consider a massive charged fermionic quantum field and investigate the current densities induced by a magnetic flux running along the core of an idealized cosmic string in the background geometry of a 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime, assuming that an extra dimension is compactified. Along the compact dimension quasi-periodicity condition is imposed on the field with a general phase. Moreover, we admit the presence of a magnetic flux enclosed by the compactified axis. The latter gives rise to Ahanorov-Bohm-like effect on the vacuum expectation value of the currents. In this setup, only azimuthal and axial current densities take place. The former presents two contributions, with the first one due to the cosmic string in a 5-dimensional AdS spacetime without compact dimension, and the second one being induced by the compactification itself. The latter is an odd function of the magnetic flux along the cosmic string and an even function of the magnetic flux enclosed by the compactified axis with period equal to the quantum flux. As to the induced axial current, it is an even function of the magnetic flux along the string's core and an odd function of the magnetic flux enclosed by the compactification perimeter. For untwisted and twisted field along compact dimension, the axial current vanishes. The massless field case is presented as well as some asymptotic limits for the parameters of the model.

In this paper, we investigate the vacuum bosonic currents in the geometry of a compactified cosmic string in the background of the de Sitter spacetime. The currents are induced by magnetic fluxes, one running along the cosmic string and another one enclosed by the compact dimension. In order to develop this analysis, we obtain the complete set of normalized bosonic wave-functions obeying a quasiperiodicity condition. In this context, we calculate the azimuthal and axial current densities. Due to the quasiperiodicity condition, the quantum number associated with the compactification of the string along its axis becomes discrete, and we use the Abel-Plana summation formula to evaluate the non-vanishing current densities. We show that these quantities are explicitly decomposed into two contributions: one corresponds to the geometry of a straight uncompactified cosmic string and the other is induced by the compactification. We also compare the results with the literature in the case of a massive fermionic field in the same geometry.

We investigate the edge effects on the finite temperature fermionic condensate (FC) for a massive fermionic field in a (2+1)-dimensional conical spacetime with a magnetic flux located at the cone apex. The field obeys the bag boundary condition on a circle concentric with the apex. The analysis is presented for both the fields realizing two irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra and for general case of the chemical potential. In both the regions outside and inside the circular boundary, the FC is decomposed into the boundary-free and boundary-induced contributions. They are periodic functions of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the flux quantum and even functions under the simultaneous change of the signs for the magentic flux and the chemical potential. The dependence of the FC on the magnetic flux becomes weaker with decreasing planar angle deficit. For points near the boundary, the effects of finite temperature, of planar angle deficit and of magnetic flux are weak. For a fixed distance from the boundary and at high temperatures the FC is dominated by the Minkowskian part. The FC in parity and time-reversal symmetric (2+1)-dimensional fermionic models is discussed and applications are given to graphitic cones.

The main objective of this paper is to analyze the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor (EMT) associated with a charged scalar quantum field in a high-dimensional cosmic string spacetime admitting the presence of a magnetic flux running along the string's core. In addition, we also assume that the coordinate along the string's axis is compactified to a circle and presents an extra magnetic flux running along its center. This compactification is implemented by imposing a quasiperiodic condition on the field with an arbitrary phase $β$. The calculation of the VEV of the EMT and field squared, are developed by using the positive-energy Wightman function. The latter is constructed by the mode sum of the complete set of normalized bosonic wave-functions. Due to the compactification, two distinct contributions take place. The first one corresponds to the VEV in a cosmic string spacetime without compactification considering the magnetic interaction. So, this term presents a contribution due to the non-trivial topology of the conical space, and an additional contribution due to the interaction between the scalar field with the magnetic flux. The latter is a periodic function of the magnetic flux with period equal to the quantum flux, $Φ_0=2π/e$, and corresponds to a Aharanov-Bhom type contribution. The second contribution is induced by the compactification itself and depends on the magnetic flux along the string's core. It is also an even function of the magnetic flux enclosed by the string axis. Some asymptotic expressions for the VEVs of the energy-momentum tensor and field squared are provided for specific limiting cases of the physical parameter of the model.

The first one corresponding to the idealized cosmic string, and the second is induced by the compactification. The latter goes to zero for an infinite length of the compactification. As a consequence of the general structure of the Wightman function, both VEVs present also this decomposition. Moreover, due to the Aharanov-Bohm type of interaction between the field with the magnetic fluxes, the VEVs depend on the fractional part of the ration between the total flux and the quantum one.

In this paper we investigate the quantum Brownian motion of a massive scalar point particle induced by the FRW spacetime in the presence of a linear topological defect named cosmic string. In addition, we also consider a flat boundary orthogonal to the defect to analyse its effect on the particle's motion. For both cases we found exact expressions for the renormalized mean square deviation of the particle velocity, the quantity that measures the induced Brownian motion, and obtain asymptotic expressions when the point particle is near and far away from the cosmic string and the boundary. Furthermore, in both cases, there appears divergencies in the mean square deviation of the particle velocity coming from a time interval that correspond to a round trip of the massive point particle between its position and the cosmic string/flat boundary. The number of divergencies depends upon the radial position of the particle and the parameter associated with the cosmic string in the case without boundary, and upon this parameter and the radial and $z$ positions of the particle in the case with boundary.

We analyze the Casimir densities and forces associated with a massive scalar quantum field confined between two parallel plates in a D-dimensional cosmic string spacetime. The plates are placed orthogonal to the string and the field obeys the Robin boundary conditions on them. The boundary-induced contributions are explicitly extracted in the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and energy-momentum tensor for both single and two plates. The VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, in additional to the diagonal components, contains an off-diagonal component corresponding to the shear stress. The latter vanishes on the plates in special cases of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. For points outside the string core the topological contributions in the VEVs are finite on the plates. Near the string the VEVs are dominated by the boundary-free part, whereas at large distances the boundary-induced contributions dominate. Due to the nonzero off-diagonal component of the vacuum energy-momentum tensor, in addition to the normal component, the Casimir forces have nonzero component parallel to the boundary. Unlike the problem on the Minkowski bulk, the normal forces acting on the separate plates, in general, do not coincide. Another difference is that in the presence of the cosmic string the Casimir forces for Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions differ. For Dirichlet case the normal Casimir force does not depend on the curvature coupling parameter. This is not the case for other boundary conditions. A new qualitative feature induced by the cosmic string is the appearance of the shear stress acting on the plates. The corresponding force is directed along the radial coordinate and vanishes for Dirichlet and Neumann cases. Depending on the parameters of the problem, the radial component of the shear force can be either positive or negative.

Three distinct configurations for the magnetic field are taken into account: (i) a cylindrical shell of radius $a$, (ii) a magnetic field proportional to $1/r$ and (iii) a constant magnetic field. In these three cases, the axis of the infinitely long tube of radius $a$ coincides with the cosmic string; moreover, we only develop this analysis for the region outside the tube. In order to do that, we explicitly construct the corresponding complete set of normalized wave-functions. We show that in the region outside the tube, the induced current is decomposed into a part corresponding to a zero-thickness magnetic flux in addition to a core-induced contribution. The latter presents specific form depending on the magnetic field configuration considered. The zero-thickness contribution depends only on the fractional part of the ration of the magnetic flux inside the tube by the quantum one. As to the core-induced contribution, it depends on the total magnetic flux inside the tube, and consequently, in general, it is not a periodic function of the flux.

In this paper the $f(R)$ global monopole is reexamined. We provide an exact solution for the modified field equations in the presence of a global monopole for regions outside its core, generalizing previous results. Additionally, we discuss some particular cases obtained from this solution. We consider a setup consisting of a possible Schwarzschild black hole that absorbs the topological defect, giving rise to a static black hole endowed with a monopole's charge. Besides, we demonstrate how the asymptotic behavior of the Higgs field far from the monopole's core is shaped by a class of spacetime metrics which includes those ones analyzed here. In order to assess the gravitational properties of this system, we analyse the geodesic motion of both massive and massless test particles moving in the vicinity of such configuration. For the material particles we set the requirements they have to obey in order to experience stable orbits. On the other hand, for the photons we investigate how their trajectories are affected by the gravitational field of this black hole.

In this paper we study the effects of quantum scalar field vacuum fluctuations on scalar test particles in an analog model for the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spatially flat geometry. In this scenario, the cases with one and two perfectly reflecting plane boundaries are considered as well the case without boundary. We find that the particles can undergo Brownian motion with a nonzero mean squared velocity induced by the quantum vacuum fluctuations due to the time dependent background and the presence of the boundaries. Typical singularities which appears due to the presence of the boundaries in flat spacetime can be naturally regularized for an asymptotically bounded expanding scale function. Thus, shifts in the velocity could be, at least in principle, detectable experimentally. The possibility to implement this observation in an analog cosmological model by the use of a Bose-Einstein condensate is also discussed.

We evaluate the Hadamard function, the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter in the geometry of two parallel plates on a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background with a general scale factor. On the plates, the field operator obeys the Robin boundary conditions with the coefficients depending on the scale factor. In all the spatial regions, the VEVs are decomposed into the boundary-free and boundary-induced contributions. Unlike to the problem with the Minkowski bulk, in the region between the plates the normal stress is not homogeneous and does not vanish in the geometry of a single plate. Near the plates, it has different signs for accelerated and deccelerated expansions of the universe. The VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, in addition to the diagonal components, has a nonzero off-diagonal component describing an energy flux along the direction normal to the boundaries. Expressions are derived for the Casimir forces acting on the plates. Depending on the Robin coefficients and on the vacuum state, these forces can be either attractive or repulsive. An important difference from the corresponding result in the Minkowski bulk is that the forces on the separate plates, in general, are different if the corresponding Robin coefficients differ. We give the applications of general results for the class of $α$-vacua in the de Sitter bulk. It is shown that, compared with the Bunch-Davies vacuum state, the Casimir forces for a given $α$-vacuum may change the sign.

Within the superfield approach, we consider the nonlocal generalization of the Wess-Zumino model and calculate the one-loop low-energy contributions to the effective action. Four different nonlocal models are considered, among which only the first model does not reduce to the standard Wess-Zumino model when we take the parameter of nonlocality of the model, $Λ$, much greater than any energy scale; in addition, this model also depends on an extra parameter, $ξ$. As to the other three models, the result looks like the renormalized effective potential for the usual Wess-Zumino model, where the normalization scale $μ$ is replaced by the $Λ$. Moreover, the fourth model displays a divergence which can be eliminated through the appropriate wave function renormalization.

Three distinct configurations for the magnetic fields are taken into account: (i) a cylindrical shell of radius $a$, (ii) a magnetic field proportional to $1/r$ and (iii) a constant magnetic field. In these three cases, the axis of the infinitely long tube of radius $a$ coincides with the cosmic string. Our main objectives in this paper are to analyze the fermionic condensat (FC) e and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the fermionic energy-momentum tensor. In order to do that, we explicitly construct the complete set of normalized wave-functions for each configuration of magnetic field. We show that in the region outside the tube, the FC and the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor are decomposed into two parts: the first ones correspond to the zero-thickness magnetic flux contributions, and the seconds are induced by the non-trivial structure of the magnetic field, named core-induced contributions. The latter present specific forms depending on the magnetic field configuration considered. We also show that the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor is diagonal, obeys the conservation condition and its trace is expressed in terms of the fermionic condensate. The zero-thickness contributions to the FC and VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, depend only on the fractional part of the ration of the magnetic flux inside the tube by the quantum one. As to the core-induced contributions they depend on the total magnetic flux inside the tube, and consequently, in general, are not a periodic function of the magnetic flux.

In this paper we consider light-cone fluctuations arising as a consequence of the nontrivial topology of the locally flat cosmic string spacetime. By setting the light-cone along the z-direction we are able to develop a full analysis to calculate the renormalized graviton two-point function, as well as the mean square fluctuation in the geodesic interval function and the time delay (or advance) in the propagation of a light-pulse. We found that all these expressions depend upon the parameter characterizing the conical topology of the cosmic string spacetime and vanish in the absence of it. We also point out that at large distances from the cosmic string the mean square fluctuation in the geodesic interval function is extremely small while in the opposite limit it logarithmically increases, improving the signal and thus, making possible the detection of such quantity.

We evaluate the fermion condensate and the expectation values of the charge and current densities for a massive fermionic field in (2+1)-dimensional conical spacetime with a magnetic flux located at the cone apex. The consideration is done for both irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra. The expectation values are decomposed into the vacuum expectation values and contributions coming from particles and antiparticles. All these contributions are periodic functions of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the flux quantum. Related to the non-invariance of the model under the parity and time-reversal transformations, the fermion condensate and the charge density have indefinite parity with respect to the change of the signs of the magnetic flux and chemical potential. The expectation value of the radial current density vanishes. The azimuthal current density is the same for both the irreducible representations of the Clifford algebra. It is an odd function of the magnetic flux and an even function of the chemical potential. The behavior of the expectation values in various asymptotic regions of the parameters are discussed in detail. In particular, we show that for points near the cone apex the vacuum parts dominate. For a massless field with zero chemical potential the fermion condensate and charge density vanish. Simple expressions are derived for the part in the total charge induced by the planar angle deficit and magnetic flux. Combining the results for separate irreducible representations, we also consider the fermion condensate, charge and current densities in parity and time-reversal symmetric models. Possible applications to graphitic nanocones are discussed.

A massless real quantum scalar field is considered in two distinct situations: between two parallel plates and inside a rectangular two-dimensional box. In both cases we have adopted specific boundary conditions on the field at the boundary. As we shall see, the energy and the Casimir force strongly depends on the parameter associated with the breaking of Lorentz symmetry and also on the boundary conditions.

In this paper we investigate the non-Abelian cosmic string in de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes. In order to do that we construct the complete set of equations of motion considering the presence of a cosmological constant. By using numerical analysis we provide the behavior of the Higgs and gauge fields and also for the metric tensor for specific values of the physical parameters of the theory. For de Sitter case, we find the appearance of horizons that although being consequence of the presence of the cosmological constant it strongly depends on the value of the gravitational coupling. In the anti-de Sitter case, we find that the system does not present horizons. In fact the new feature of this system is related with the behavior of the $(00)$ and $(zz)$ components of the metric tensor. They present a strongly increasing for large distance from the string.

In this paper we study the expectation values of the induced charge and current densities for a massive bosonic field with nonzero chemical potential in the geometry of a higher dimensional compactified cosmic string with magnetic fluxes, along the string core and also enclosed by the compactified direction, in thermal equilibrium at finite temperature $T$. These densities are calculated by decomposing them into the vacuum expectation values and finite temperature contributions coming from the particles and antiparticles. The only nonzero components correspond to the charge, azimuthal and axial current densities. By using the Abel-Plana formula, we decompose the components of the densities into the part induced by the cosmic string and the one by the compactification. The charge density is an odd function of the chemical potential and even periodic function of the magnetic flux with a period equal to the quantum flux. Moreover, the azimuthal (axial) current density is an even function of the chemical potential and an odd (even) periodic function of the magnetic flux with the same period. In this paper our main concern is the thermal effect on the charge and current densities, including some limiting cases, the low and high temperature approximations. We show that in all cases the temperature enhances the induced densities.
