Abstract:
We investigated the feasibility of quantum-correlation measurements in nuclear physics experiments. In a first approach, we measured spin correlations of singlet-spin (1S0) proton pairs, which were generated in 1H(d,2He) and 12C(d,2He) nuclear charge-exchange reactions. The experiment was optimized for a clean preparation of the 2He singlet state and offered a 2pi detection geometry for both pro…

The experiment was optimized for a clean preparation of the 2He singlet state and offered a 2pi detection geometry for both protons in the exit channel. Our results confirm the effectiveness of the setup for theses studies, despite limitations of a small data sample recorded during the feasibility studies.

Abstract:
To investigate the importance of three-nucleon forces (3NF) systematically over a broad range of intermediate energies, the differential cross sections of elastic proton-deuteron scattering have been measured at proton bombarding energies of 108, 120, 135, 150, 170 and 190 MeV at center-of-mass angles between $30^\circ$ and $170^\circ$. Comparisons with Faddeev calculations show unambiguously the shortcomings of calculations employing only two-body forces and the necessity of including 3NF. They also show the limitations of the latest few-nucleon calculations at backward angles, especially at higher beam energies. Some of these discrepancies could be partially due to relativistic effects. Data at lowest energy are also compared with a recent calculation based on \chipt.

Abstract:
Populating states in 22Mg via the (p,t) reaction in inverse kinematics with a 55 MeV/nucleon 24Mg beam, we have measured the proton-decay branching ratios of the levels at 5.96 MeV and 6.05 MeV and obtained an experimental upper limit on the branching ratio of the 5.71 MeV state. On the basis of the present and previous measurements, we assign spins and parities to the 5.96 MeV and 6.05 MeV states. We combine our branching ratios with independent measurements of the lifetimes of these states or their 22Ne analogs to compute the resonance strengths and thereby the astrophysical rate of the 21Na(p,g)22Mg reaction. We perform hydrodynamic calculations of nova outbursts with this new rate and analyze its impact on 22Na yields.

Abstract:
In an experiment designed to overcome the loophole of observer dependent reality and satisfying the counterfactuality condition, we measured polarization correlations of 1S0 proton pairs produced in 12C(d,2He) and 1H(d,He) reactions in one setting. The results of these measurements are used to test the Bell and Wigner inequalties against the predictions of quantum mechanics.

A recoil coincidence technique has been applied to measure the alpha-decay branching ratios of near-threshold states in 19Ne. Populating these states using the (p,t) reaction in inverse kinematics, we detected the recoils and their decay products with 100% geometric efficiency using a magnetic spectrometer. Combining our branching ratio measurements with independent determinations of the radiative widths of these states, we calculate the astrophysical rate of 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne. Using this reaction rate, we perform hydrodynamic calculations of nova outbursts and conclude that no significant breakout from the hot CNO cycles into the rp process occurs in novae via 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne.

Abstract:
The 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne reaction is one of two routes for breakout from the hot CNO cycles into the rp process in accreting neutron stars. Its astrophysical rate depends critically on the decay properties of excited states in 19Ne lying just above the 15O + alpha threshold. We have measured the alpha-decay branching ratios for these states using the p(21Ne,t)19Ne reaction at 43 MeV/u. Combining…
