A new alternative approach to calculate the ratio of the surface to volume components of the nuclear symmetry energy is proposed in the framework of the coherent density fluctuation model (CDFM). A new expression (scheme II) for the ratio is derived consistently within the model. This expression appears in a form more direct and physically motivated than the expression (scheme I) that was used in our previous works within the CDFM and avoids preliminary assumptions and mathematical ambiguities in scheme I. The calculations are based on the Skyrme and Brueckner energy-density functionals for nuclear matter and on nonrelativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock method with realistic Bonn B and Bonn CD nucleon-nucleon potentials. The approach is applied to isotopic chains of Ni, Sn, and Pb nuclei using nuclear densities obtained in self-consistent Hartree-Fock+BCS calculations with SLy4 Skyrme effective interaction. The applicability of both schemes within the CDFM is demonstrated by a comparison of the results with the available empirical data and with results of other theoretical studies of the considered quantities. Although in some instances the results obtained for the studied ratio and the symmetry energy components are rather close in both schemes, the new scheme II leads to more realistic values that agree better with the empirical data and exhibits conceptual and operational advantages.

Backward elastic electron scattering from odd-A nuclear targets is characterized by magnetic form factors containing precise information on the nuclear structure. We study the sensitivity of the magnetic form factors to structural effects related to the evolution and shape transitions in both isotopic and isotonic chains. Calculations of magnetic form factors are performed in the plane-wave Born approximation. The nuclear structure is obtained from a deformed self-consistent mean-field calculation based on a Skyrme HF+BCS formalism. Collective effects are included in the cranking approximation, whereas nucleon-nucleon correlations are taken into account in the coherent density fluctuation model. The evolution of the magnetic form factors is found to exhibit signatures of shape transitions that show up in selected isotopic and isotonic chains involving both stable and unstable nuclei. Several cases are identified as suitable candidates for showing such fingerprints of shape transitions. A new generation of electron scattering experiments involving electron-radioactive beam colliders will be available in the near future, leading to a renewed interest in this field.

The neutron skin of nuclei is an important fundamental property, but its accurate measurement faces many challenges. Inspired by charge symmetry of nuclear forces, the neutron skin of a neutron-rich nucleus is related to the difference between the charge radii of the corresponding mirror nuclei. We investigate this relation within the framework of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method with Skyrme interactions. Predictions for proton skins are also made for several mirror pairs in the middle mass range. For the first time the correlation between the thickness of the neutron skin and the characteristics related with the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy is investigated simultaneously for nuclei and their corresponding mirror partners. As an example, the Ni isotopic chain with mass number $A=48-60$ is considered. These quantities are calculated within the coherent density fluctuation model using Brueckner and Skyrme energy-density functionals for isospin asymmetric nuclear matter with two Skyrme-type effective interactions, SkM* and SLy4. Results are also presented for the symmetry energy as a function of $A$ for a family of mirror pairs from selected chains of nuclei with $Z=20$, $N=14$, and $N=50$. The evolution curves show a similar behavior crossing at the $N=Z$ nucleus in each chain and a smooth growing deviation when $N\neq Z$ starts. Comparison of our results for the radii and skins with those from the calculations based on high-precision chiral forces is made.

The one-body properties are obtained in a deformed self-consistent mean-field calculation based on a Skyrme HF+BCS method. Collective effects are also included in the cranking approximation. Results on several stable nuclei are compared with the available experimental information. It is shown that a deformed formalism improves the agreement with experiment in deformed nuclei, while reproducing equally well spherical nuclei by taking properly the spherical limit of the deformed model and the effect of nucleon-nucleon correlations. Thus, the capability of the model to describe magnetic form factors is demonstrated. This opens the door to explore also unstable nuclei of particular interest that could be measured in future experiments on electron-radioactive beam colliders.

The temperature dependence of the volume and surface components of the nuclear symmetry energy (NSE) and their ratio is investigated in the framework of the local density approximation (LDA). The results of these quantities for finite nuclei are obtained within the coherent density fluctuation model (CDFM). The CDFM weight function is obtained using the temperature-dependent proton and neutron densities calculated through the HFBTHO code that solves the nuclear Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov problem by using the cylindrical transformed deformed harmonic-oscillator basis. We present and discuss the values of the volume and surface contributions to the NSE and their ratio obtained for the Ni, Sn, and Pb isotopic chains around double-magic $^{78}$Ni, $^{132}$Sn, and $^{208}$Pb nuclei. The results for the $T$-dependence of the considered quantities are compared with estimations made previously for zero temperature showing the behavior of the NSE components and their ratio, as well as with the available experimental data. The sensitivity of the results on various forms of the density dependence of the symmetry energy is studied. We confirm the existence of `kinks' of these quantities as functions of the mass number at $T=0$ MeV for the double closed-shell nuclei $^{78}$Ni and $^{132}$Sn and the lack of `kinks' for the Pb isotopes, as well as the disappearance of these kinks as the temperature increases.

The temperature dependence of the symmetry energy for isotopic chains of even-even Ni, Sn, and Pb nuclei is investigated in the framework of the local density approximation (LDA). The Skyrme energy density functional with two Skyrme-class effective interactions, SkM* and SLy4, is used in the calculations. The temperature-dependent proton and neutron densities are calculated through the HFBTHO code that solves the nuclear Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov problem by using the cylindrical transformed deformed harmonic-oscillator basis. In addition, two other density distributions of $^{208}$Pb, namely the Fermi-type density determined within the extended Thomas-Fermi (TF) method and symmetrized-Fermi local density obtained within the rigorous density functional approach, are used. The kinetic energy densities are calculated either by the HFBTHO code or, for a comparison, by the extended TF method up to second order in temperature (with $T^{2}$ term). Alternative ways to calculate the symmetry energy coefficient within the LDA are proposed. The results for the thermal evolution of the symmetry energy coefficient in the interval $T=0-4$ MeV show that its values decrease with temperature. The temperature dependence of the neutron and proton root-mean-square radii and corresponding neutron skin thickness is also investigated, showing that the effect of temperature leads mainly to a substantial increase of the neutron radii and skins, especially in the more neutron-rich nuclei, a feature that may have consequences on astrophysical processes and neutron stars.

We briefly review the motivation to search for sterile neutrinos in the keV mass scale, as dark matter candidates, and the prospects to find them in beta decay or electron capture spectra, with a global perspective. We describe the fundamentals of the neutrino flavor-mass eigenstate mismatch that opens the possibility of detecting sterile neutrinos in such ordinary nuclear processes. Results are shown and discussed for the effect of heavy neutrino emission in electron capture in Holmium 163 and in two isotopes of Lead, 202 and 205, as well as in the beta decay of Tritium. We study the de-excitation spectrum in the considered cases of electron capture and the charged lepton spectrum in the case of Tritium beta decay. For each of these cases, we define ratios of integrated transition rates over different regions of the spectrum under study, and give new results that may guide and facilitate the analysis of possible future measurements, paying particular attention to forbidden transitions in Lead isotopes.

A comprehensive study of various ground-state properties of neutron-rich and neutron-deficient Mg isotopes with $A$=20-36 is performed in the framework of the self-consistent deformed Skyrme-Hartree-Fock plus BCS method. The correlation between the skin thickness and the characteristics related with the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy is investigated for this isotopic chain following the theoretical approach based on the coherent density fluctuation model and using the Brueckner energy-density functional. The results of the calculations show that the behavior of the nuclear charge radii and the nuclear symmetry energy in the Mg isotopic chain is closely related to the nuclear deformation. We also study, within our theoretical scheme, the emergence of an "island of inversion" at neutron-rich $^{32}$Mg nucleus, that was recently proposed from the analyses of spectroscopic measurements of $^{32}$Mg low-lying energy spectrum and the charge rms radii of all magnesium isotopes in the $sd$ shell.

The spectral function accounts for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) correlations, it has a realistic energy dependence and natural orbitals (NO's) from the Jastrow correlation method are used in its construction. In all calculations the standard value of the axial mass $M_A= 1.032$ GeV/c$^2$ is used. The results are compared with those when NN correlations are not included, as in the Relativistic Fermi Gas (RFG) model, or when harmonic-oscillator (HO) single-particle wave functions are used instead of NO's. The role of the final-state interactions (FSI) on the theoretical spectral and scaling functions, as well as on the cross sections is accounted for. A comparison of the results for the cases with and without FSI, as well as to results from the phenomenological scaling function obtained from the superscaling analysis (SuSA) is carried out. Our calculations based on the impulse approximation (IA) underpredict the MiniBooNE data, but agree with the data from the NOMAD experiment. Sterile neutrinos with mass in the range of one to a few keV are important as extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics and are serious dark matter (DM) candidates. This DM mass scale (warm DM) is in agreement with both cosmological and galactic observations. We study the role of a keV sterile neutrino through its mixing with a light active neutrino in Rhenium 187 and Tritium beta decays. We pinpoint the energy spectrum of the beta particle, 0 < T_e < (Q_{beta} - m_s), as the region where a sterile neutrino could be detected and where its mass m_s could be measured. This energy region is at least 1 keV away rom the region suitable to measure the mass of the light active neutrino, located near the endpoint Q_{beta} . The emission of a keV sterile neutrino in a beta decay could show up as a small kink in the spectrum of the emitted beta particle. With this in view, we perform a careful calculation of the Rhenium and Tritium beta spectra and estimate the size of this perturbation by means of the dimensionless ratio R of the sterile neutrino to the active neutrino contributions. We comment on the possibility of searching for sterile neutrino signatures in two experiments which are currently running at present, MARE and KATRIN, focused on the Rhenium 187 and Tritium beta decays respectively.

The link between the scaling function extracted from the analysis of (e,e') cross sections and the spectral function/momentum distribution in nuclei is revisited. Several descriptions of the spectral function based on the independent particle model are employed, together with the inclusion of nucleon correlations, and effects of the energy dependence arising from the width of the hole states are investigated. Although some of these approaches provide rough overall agreement with data, they are not found to be capable of reproducing one of the distinctive features of the experimental scaling function, namely its asymmetry. However, the addition of final-state interactions, incorporated in the present study using either relativistic mean field theory or via a complex optical potential, does lead to asymmetric scaling functions in accordance with data. The present analysis seems to indicate that final-state interactions constitute an essential ingredient and are required to provide a proper description of the experimental scaling function.

The wave function of the outgoing proton is obtained by solving the Dirac equation with a S-V optical potential fitted to elastic proton scattering data on the residual nucleus. Within this theoretical framework, we compute the cross section of the reaction and other observables like the transverse-longitudinal asymmetry, and compare them with the available experimental data measured at JLab.

Here it is shown that a selfconsistent Hartree-Fock+BCS approach with experimental deformations for 76Ge and 76Se may decisively improve the agreement with the recent data on occupation probabilities by Schiffer et al. and Kay et al. Best agreement with available data on 76Ge and 76Se, as well as on neighbor isotopes, is obtained when the spin-orbit strength for neutrons is allowed to be larger than that for protons. The two-neutrino double-beta decay matrix element is also shown to agree with data.

We extend our previous description of the superscaling phenomenon in inclusive electron scattering within the Coherent Density Fluctuation Model (CDFM). This model is a natural extension to finite nuclei of the Relativistic Fermi Gas Model (RFG) within which the scaling variable $ψ^{\prime}$ was introduced. In this work we propose a new modified CDFM approach to calculate the total, longitudinal and transverse scaling functions built up from the hadronic tensor and the longitudinal and transverse response functions in the RFG. We test the superscaling behavior of the new CDFM scaling functions by calculating the cross sections of electron scattering (in QE- and $Δ$-region for nuclei with $12\leq A\leq208$ at different energies and angles) and comparing to available experimental data. The new modified CDFM approach is extended to calculate charge-changing neutrino and antineutrino scattering on $^{12}$C at 1 GeV incident energy.

A theoretical analysis of the single-state dominance hypothesis for the two-neutrino double-beta decay rates is performed on the examples of the double-beta decays of 100Mo, 116Cd, and 128Te. We also test the validity of an extended low-lying-state dominance that takes into account the contributions of the low-lying excited states in the intermediate nucleus to the double-beta decay rates. This study has been accomplished for all the double-beta emitters for which we have experimental information on their half-lives. The theoretical framework is a proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation based on a deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean field with pairing correlations. Our calculations indicate that there are not clear evidences for single- or low-lying-state dominance in the two-neutrino double-beta decay. Finally, we investigate the single electron energy distributions of the outgoing electrons in the double-beta decay processes with an exact treatment of the energy denominators, which could help to a more comprehensive analysis of NEMO-3 data.

The Generalized Coherent State Model, proposed previously for a unified description of magnetic and electric collective properties of nuclear systems, is used to study the ground state band charge density as well as the E0 transitions from $0^+_β$ to $0^+_g$. The influence of the nuclear deformation and of angular momentum projection on the charge density is investigated. The monopole transition amplitude has been calculated for ten nuclei. The results are compared with some previous theoretical studies and with the available experimental data. Our results concerning angular momentum projection are consistent with those of previous microscopic calculations for the ground state density. The calculations for the E0 transitions agree quite well with the experimental data. Issues like how the shape transitions or shape coexistence are reflected in the $ρ(E0)$ behavior are also addressed.

A sixth-order quadrupole boson Hamiltonian is used to describe the states $0^+$ and $2^+$ identified in several nuclei by various types of experiments. Two alternative descriptions of energy levels are proposed. One corresponds to a semi-classical approach of the model Hamiltonian while the other one provides the exact eigenvalues. Both procedures yield close formulas for energies. The first procedure involves four parameters, while the second involves a compact formula with five parameters. In each case the parameters are fixed by a least-square fit procedure. Applications are performed for eight even-even nuclei.
Both methods yield results which are in a surprisingly good agreement with the experimental data. We give also our predicted reduced transition probabilities within the two approaches, although the corresponding experimental data are not yet available.

The influence of nuclear isospin mixing on parity-violating elastic electron scattering is studied for the even-even, N=Z nuclei 12C, 24Mg, 28Si, and 32S. Their ground-state wave functions have been obtained using a self-consistent axially-symmetric mean-field approximation with density-dependent effective two-body Skyrme interactions. Some differences from previous shell-model calculations appear for the isovector Coulomb form factors which play a role in determining the parity-violating asymmetry. To gain an understanding of how these differences arise, the results have been expanded in a spherical harmonic oscillator basis. Results are obtained not only within the plane-wave Born approximation, but also using the distorted-wave Born approximation for comparison with potential future experimental studies of parity-violating electron scattering. To this end, for each nucleus the focus is placed on kinematic ranges where the signal (isospin-mixing effects on the parity-violating asymmetry) and the experimental figure-of-merit are maximized. Strangeness contributions to the asymmetry are also briefly discussed, since they and the isospin mixing contributions may play comparable roles for the nuclei being studied at the low momentum transfers of interest in the present work.

To illustrate the problems the optimization process may encounter, we provide results obtained for the nucleon resonances $Δ$(1230) and $Δ$(1700). The former can be easily isolated and thus has been studied in depth, while the latter is not as well known experimentally.

The comparison with the relativistic Fermi gas (RFG) model without interaction shows an improvement in the explanation of the scaling function $f(ψ')$ in the region $ψ' < -1$, where the RFG result is $f(ψ') = 0$. It is found that the behavior of $f(ψ')$ for $ψ' < -1$ depends on the particular form of the general power-law asymptotics of the momentum distribution $n(k)\sim 1/ k^{4+m}$ at large $k$. The best agreement with the empirical scaling function is found for $m\simeq 4.5$ in agreement with the asymptotics of $n(k)$ in the coherent density fluctuation model where $m = 4$. Thus, superscaling gives information about the asymptotics of $n(k)$ and the NN forces.

The Gamow-Teller transitions are obtained within a quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) approach using a residual spin-isospin interaction in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. We then discuss the pairing BCS treatment and the determination of the ph and pp residual interaction coupling constants. Superscaling analyses of inclusive electron scattering from nuclei are extended from the quasielastic processes to the delta excitation region. The calculations of $(e,e^\prime)$ cross sections for the target nucleus $^{12}$C at various incident electron energies are performed using scaling functions $f(ψ^{\prime})$ obtained in approaches going beyond the mean-field approximation, such as the coherent density fluctuation model (CDFM) and the one based on the light-front dynamics (LFD) method. The results are compared with those obtained using the relativistic Fermi gas (RFG) model and the extended RFG model (ERFG). Our method utilizes in an equivalent way both basic nuclear quantities, density and momentum distributions, showing their role for the scaling and superscaling phenomena. The approach is extended to consider scaling function for medium and heavy nuclei with $Z\neq N$ for which the proton and neutron densities are not similar. The asymmetry of the CDFM quasielastic scaling function is introduced, simulating in a phenomenological way the effects which violate the symmetry for $ψ^{\prime}\geq 0$ including the role of the final-state interaction (FSI). The superscaling properties of the electron scattering are used to predict charge-changing neutrino-nucleus cross sections at energies from 1 to 2 GeV. A comparison with the results of the ERFG model is made. The analyses make it possible to gain information about the nucleon correlation effects on both local density and nucleon momentum distributions.

The results are in a reasonable agreement with the empirical data from the inclusive electron scattering from nuclei showing superscaling for negative values of $ψ'$, including those smaller than -1. This is an improvement over the relativistic Fermi gas (RFG) model predictions where $f(ψ')$ becomes abruptly zero for $ψ'\leq -1$. We study Gamow-Teller strength distributions in the neutron-deficient even isotopes (184-194)Pb in a search for signatures of deformation. The microscopic formalism used is based on a deformed quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) approach, which involves a self-consistent quasiparticle deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock (HF) basis and residual spin-isospin forces in both the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. By analyzing the sensitivity of the Gamow-Teller strength distributions to the various ingredients in the formalism, we conclude that the beta-decay of these isotopes could be a useful tool to look for fingerprints of nuclear deformation.

The model incorporates a new theoretical treatment of spin-3/2 resonances, first introduced by Pascalutsa, avoiding pathologies present in previous models. Other main features of the model are chiral symmetry, gauge invariance, and crossing symmetry. We use the model combined with modern optimization techniques to assess the parameters of the nucleon resonances on the basis of world data on electromagnetic multipoles. We present results for electromagnetic multipoles, differential cross sections, asymmetries, and total cross sections for all one pion photoproduction processes on free nucleons. We find overall agreement with data from threshold up to 1 GeV in laboratory frame.

Results of charge form factors calculations for several unstable neutron-rich isotopes of light, medium and heavy nuclei (He, Li, Ni, Kr, Sn) are presented and compared to those of stable isotopes in the same isotopic chain. For the lighter isotopes (He and Li) the proton and neutron densities are obtained within a microscopic large-scale shell-model, while for heavier ones Ni, Kr and Sn the densities are calculated in deformed self-consistent mean-field Skyrme HF+BCS method. We also compare proton densities to matter densities together with their rms radii and diffuseness parameter values. Whenever possible comparison of form factors, densities and rms radii with available experimental data is also performed. Calculations of form factors are carried out both in plane wave Born approximation (PWBA) and in distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA). These form factors are suggested as predictions for the future experiments on the electron-radioactive beam colliders where the effect of the neutron halo or skin on the proton distributions in exotic nuclei is planned to be studied and thereby the various theoretical models of exotic nuclei will be tested.

We give results of microscopic calculations for the half-lives of various proton-rich nuclei in the mass region A=60-90, which are involved in the astrophysical rp-process, and which are needed as input parameters of numerical simulations in Nuclear Astrophysics. The microscopic formalism consists of a deformed QRPA approach that involves a selfconsistent quasiparticle deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock basis and residual spin-isospin separable forces in both the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. The strength of the particle-hole residual interaction is chosen to be consistent with the Skyrme effective force and mean field basis, while that of the particle-particle is globally fixed to 0.07 MeV after a judicious choice from comparison to experimental half-lives. We study and discuss the sensitivity of the half-lives to deformation and residual interactions.

We study Fermi transitions and isospin mixing in an isotopic chain 70-78 Kr considering various approximations that use the same Skyrme-Hartree-Fock single particle basis. We study Coulomb effects as well as the effect of BCS and quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) correlations. A measure of isospin mixing in the approximate ground state is defined by means of the expectation value of the isospin operator squared in N=Z nuclei (which is generalized to N different from Z nuclei). Starting from strict Hartree-Fock approach without Coulomb, it is shown that the isospin breaking is negligible, on the order of a few per thousand for (N-Z)=6, increasing to a few percent with Coulomb. Pairing correlations induce rather large isospin mixing and Fermi transitions of the forbidden type (beta- for N<Z, and beta+ for N>Z). The enhancement produced by BCS correlations is compensated to a large extent by QRPA correlations induced by isospin conserving residual interactions that tend to restore isospin symmetry.

Abstract:
We count the number of pairs in the single j-shell model of {44}Ti for various interactions. For a state of total angular momentum I, the wave function can be written in terms of the probability amplitude D(Jp Jn) that the protons couple to Jp and the neutrons to Jn. For I=0 there are three states with (I=0,T=0) and one with (I=0,T=2). The latter is the double analog of {44}Ca. In that case (T=2…

In that case (T=2), the magnitude of D(JJ) is the same as that of a corresponding two-particle fractional parentage coefficient. In counting the number of pairs with an even angular momentum J, we find a new relationship obtained by diagonalizing a unitary nine-j symbol. We are also able to get results for the `no-interaction' case for T=0 states, for which it is found, e.g., that there are less (J=1,T=0) pairs than on the average. Relative to this `no-interaction case', we find for the most realistic interaction used that there is an enhancement of pairs with angular momentum J=0,2,1 and 7, and a depletion for the others. Also considered are interactions in which only the (J=0,T=1) pair state is at lower energy, only the (J=1,T=0) pair state is lowered and where both are equally lowered, as well as the QQ interaction. We are also able to obtain simplified formulae for the number of J=0 pairs for the I=0 states in {46}Ti and {48}Ti by noting that the unique state with isospin |Tz|+2 is orthogonal to all the states with isospin |Tz|.

The scaling functions $f(ψ')$ and $F(y)$ from the $ψ'$- and $y$-scaling analyses of inclusive electron scattering from nuclei are explored within the coherent density fluctuation model (CDFM). In addition to the CDFM formulation in which the local density distribution is used, we introduce a new equivalent formulation of the CDFM based on the one-body nucleon momentum distribution (NMD). Special attention is paid to the different ways in which the excitation energy of the residual system is taken into account in $y$- and $ψ'$-scaling. Both functions, $f(ψ')$ and $F(y)$, are calculated using different NMD's and are compared with the experimental data for a wide range of nuclei. The good description of the data for $y < 0$ and $ψ' < 0$ (including $ψ'< -1$) makes it possible to show the sensitivity of the calculated scaling functions to the peculiarities of the NMD's in different regions of momenta. It is concluded that the existing data on the $ψ'$- and $y$-scaling are informative for the NMD's at momenta not larger than $2.0 ÷2.5$ fm$^{-1}$. The CDFM allows us to study simultaneously on the same footing the role of both basic quantities, the momentum and density distributions, for the description of scaling and superscaling phenomena in nuclei.

We use a deformed QRPA formalism to describe simultaneously the energy distributions of the single beta Gamow-Teller strength and the two-neutrino double beta decay matrix elements. Calculations are performed in a series of double beta decay partners with A = 48, 76, 82, 96, 100, 116, 128, 130, 136 and 150, using deformed Woods-Saxon potentials and deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean fields. The formalism includes a quasiparticle deformed basis and residual spin-isospin forces in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. We discuss the sensitivity of the parent and daughter Gamow-Teller strength distributions in single beta decay, as well as the sensitivity of the double beta decay matrix elements to the deformed mean field and to the residual interactions. Nuclear deformation is found to be a mechanism of suppression of the two-neutrino double beta decay. The double beta decay matrix elements are found to have maximum values for about equal deformations of parent and daughter nuclei. They decrease rapidly when differences in deformations increase. We remark the importance of a proper simultaneous description of both double beta decay and single Gamow-Teller strength distributions. Finally, we conclude that for further progress in the field it would be useful to improve and complete the experimental information on the studied Gamow-Teller strengths and nuclear deformations.
