We present a comprehensive analysis of fidelity decay and error accumulation in faulty quantum circuit models. Our work devises an analytical bound for the average fidelity between desired and faulty output states, accounting for errors that may arise during the implementation of two-qubit gates and multi-qubit permutations. It is shown that fidelity decays exponentially with both circuit depth and the number of qubits raised to an architecture-dependent power, and determine the decay rates as a function of the two types of errors. Furthermore, we establish a robust linear relationship between fidelity and the heavy output frequency used in Quantum Volume tests to benchmark quantum processors, under the considered errors protocol. These findings pave the way for predicting the behavior of fidelity in the presence of specific errors and offer insights into the best strategies for increasing Quantum Volume.

The ground state of a free-fermionic chain with inhomogeneous hop**s at half-filling can be mapped into the Dirac vacuum on a static curved space-time, which presents exactly homogeneous occupations due to particle-hole symmetry. Yet, far from half-filling we observe density modulations and depletion effects. The system can be described by a 1D Schrödinger equation on a different static space-time, with an effective potential which accounts for the depleted regions. We provide a semiclassical expression for the single-particle modes and the density profiles associated to different hop** patterns and filling fractions. Moreover, we show that the depletion effects can be compensated for all filling fractions by adding a chemical potential proportional to the hop**s. Interestingly, we can obtain exactly the same density profiles on a homogeneous chain if we introduce a chemical potential which is inverse to the hop** intensities, even though the ground state is different from the original one.

We study an inhomogeneous critical Ising chain in a transverse field whose couplings decay exponentially from the center. In the strong inhomogeneity limit we apply Fisher's renormalization group to show that the ground state is formed by concentric singlets similar to those of the rainbow state of the XX model. In the weak inhomogeneity limit we map the model to a massless Majorana fermion living in a hyperbolic spacetime, where, using CFT techniques, we derive the entanglement entropy that is violated linearly. We also study an inhomogeneous non-critical Ising model that for weak inhomogeneity is mapped to a massive Majorana fermion, while for strong inhomogeneity regime it exhibits trivial and non-trivial topological phases and a separation between regions with high and low entanglement. We also present the entanglement Hamiltonian of the model.

The {\em rainbow state} denotes a set of valence bond states organized concentrically around the center of a spin 1/2 chain. It is the ground state of an inhomogeneous XX Hamiltonian and presents maximal violation of the area law of entanglement entropy. Here, we add a tunable exchange coupling constant at the center, $γ$, and show that it induces entanglement transitions of the ground state. At very strong inhomogeneity, the rainbow state survives for $0 \leq γ\leq 1$, while outside that region the ground state is a product of dimers. In the weak inhomogeneity regime the entanglement entropy satisfies a volume law, derived from CFT in curved spacetime, with an effective central charge that depends on the inhomogeneity parameter and $γ$. In all regimes we have found that the entanglement properties are invariant under the transformation $γ\longleftrightarrow 1 - γ$, whose fixed point $γ= \frac{1}{2}$ corresponds to the usual rainbow model. Finally, we study the robustness of non trivial topological phases in the presence of the defect.

It has been shown recently that inhomogenous spin chains can exhibit exotic phenomena such as the breaking of the area law of the entanglement entropy. An example is given by the rainbow model where the exchange coupling constants decrease from the center of the chain. Here we show that by folding the chain around its center, the long-range entanglement becomes short-range which can lead to topological phases protected by symmetries (SPT). The phases are trivial for bond-centered foldings, and non trivial for site-centered ones. In the latter case, the folded spin 1/2 chain with $U(1)$ symmetry belongs to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger class, while the folded chain with $SU(2)$ symmetry is in the Haldane phase. Finally, we extend these results to higher spin chains where we find a correspondence between the symmetry protection of gapped and gapless phases.
