There is a small group of peculiar early-type stars on the main sequence that show different rotation velocities from different spectral lines. This inconsistency might be due to the binary nature of these objects. We aim to verify this hypothesis by a more detailed spectroscopic and photometric investigation of one such object: HD 183986. We obtained 151 high and medium resolution spectra that covered an anticipated long orbital period. There is clear evidence of theorbital motion of the primary component. We uncovered a very faint and broad spectrum of the secondary component. The corresponding SB2 orbital parameters, and the component spectra, were obtained by Fourier disentangling using the KOREL code. The component spectra were further modeled by iSpec code to arrive at the atmospheric quantities and the projected rotational velocities. We have proven that this object is a binary star with the period $P$ = 1268.2(11) d, eccentricity $e$ = 0.5728(20), and mass ratio $q$ = 0.655. The primary component is a slowly rotating star ($v \sin i = 27$ km.s$^{-1}$) while the cooler and less massive secondary rotates much faster ($v \sin i \sim 120$ km.s$^{-1}$). Photometric observations obtained by the TESS satellite were also investigated to shed more light on this object. A multi-period photometric variability was detected in the TESS data ranging from hours (the $δ$ Sct-type variability) to a few days (spots/rotational variability). The physical parameters of the components and the origin of the photometric variability are discussed in more detail.

The majority of magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars exhibit periodic light, magnetic, radio, and spectroscopic variations that can be adequately modelled as a rigidly-rotating main-sequence star with persistent surface structures. Nevertheless, there is a small sample of diverse mCP stars whose rotation periods vary on timescales of decades while the shapes of their phase curves remain unchanged. Alternating period increases and decreases have been suspected in the hot CP stars CU Vir and V901 Ori, while rotation in the moderately cool star BS Cir has been decelerating. These examples bring new insight into this theoretically unpredicted phenomenon. We discuss possible causes of such behaviour and propose that dynamic interactions between a thin, outer, magnetically-confined envelope braked by the stellar wind, and an inner faster-rotating stellar body are able to explain the observed rotational variability

The light variability of hot magnetic chemically peculiar stars is typically caused by the flux redistribution in spots with peculiar abundance. This raises the question why some stars with surface abundance spots show significant rotational light variability, while others do not. We study the Bp star HD 64740 to investigate how its remarkable inhomogeneities in the surface distribution of helium and silicon, and the corresponding strong variability of many spectral lines, can result in one of the faintest photometric variabilities among the Bp stars. We used model atmospheres and synthetic spectra calculated for the silicon and helium abundances from surface abundance maps to predict the ultraviolet and visual light and line variability of HD 64740. The predicted fluxes and line profiles were compared with the observed ones derived with the IUE, HST, and Hipparcos satellites and with spectra acquired using the FEROS spectrograph at the 2.2m MPG/ESO telescope. We are able to reproduce the observed visual light curve of HD 64740 assuming an inhomogeneous distribution of iron correlated with silicon distribution. The light variations in the ultraviolet are hardly detectable. We detect the variability of many ultraviolet lines of carbon, silicon, and aluminium and discuss the origin of these lines and the nature of their variations. The maximum abundances of helium and silicon are not high enough to cause significant light variations. The detected variability of many ultraviolet lines is most likely of atmospheric origin and reflects the inhomogeneous elemental surface distribution. The variability of the Civ resonance lines is stronger and it probably results from the dependence of the wind mass-loss rate on the chemical composition and magnetic field orientation. We have not been able to detect a clear signature of the matter trapped in the circumstellar clouds.

The spectral energy distribution (SED) in chemically peculiar stars may be significantly affected by their abundance anomalies. The observed SED variations are usually assumed to be a result of inhomogeneous surface distribution of chemical elements, flux redistribution and stellar rotation. However, the direct evidence for this is still only scarce. We aim to identify the processes that determine the SED and its variability in the UV and visual spectral domains of the helium-weak star CU Vir. We used the model atmospheres to obtain the emergent flux and predict the rotationally modulated flux variability of the star. We show that most of the light variations in the vby filters of the Stromgren photometric system are a result of the uneven surface distribution of silicon, chromium, and iron. Our models are only able to explain a part of the variability in the u filter, however. The observed UV flux distribution is very well reproduced, and the models are able to explain most of the observed features in the UV light curve. The variability observed in the visible is merely a faint gleam of that in the UV. While the amplitude of the light curves reaches only several hundredths of magnitude in the visual domain, it reaches about 1 mag in the UV. The visual and UV light variability of CU Vir is caused by the flux redistribution from the far UV to near UV and visible regions, inhomogeneous distribution of the elements and stellar rotation. Bound-free transitions of silicon and bound-bound transitions of iron and chromium contribute the most to the flux redistribution. This mechanism can explain most of the rotationally modulated light variations in the filters centred on the Paschen continuum and on the UV continuum of the star CU Vir. However, another mechanism(s) has to be invoked to fully explain the observed light variations in the u filter and in the region 2000-2500 A.

CU Vir and V901 Ori belong among these few magnetic chemically peculiar stars whose rotation periods vary on timescales of decades. We aim to study the stability of the periods in CU Vir and V901 Ori using all accessible observational data containing phase information. We collected all available relevant archived observations supplemented with our new measurements of these stars and analysed the period variations of the stars using a novel method that allows for the combination of data of diverse sorts. We found that the shapes of their phase curves were constant, while the periods were changing. Both stars exhibit alternating intervals of rotational braking and acceleration. The rotation period of CU Vir was gradually shortening until the year 1968, when it reached its local minimum of 0.52067198 d. The period then started increasing, reaching its local maximum of 0.5207163 d in the year 2005. Since that time the rotation has begun to accelerate again. We also found much smaller period changes in CU Vir on a timescale of several years. The rotation period of V901 Ori was increasing for the past quarter-century, reaching a maximum of 1.538771 d in the year 2003, when the rotation period began to decrease. A theoretically unexpected alternating variability of rotation periods in these stars would remove the spin-down time paradox and brings a new insight into structure and evolution of magnetic upper-main-sequence stars.

A vast majority of well-studied CP stars have quite steady rotational periods (e.g. SrCrEu star CQ UMa). However, there are several CP stars that exhibit apparent period variations. The origin of the period variations is unclear in many cases. We describe the observed period variations of several individual CP stars, especially V901 Ori, sigma Ori E, HR 7355, CU Vir, SX Ari, and EE Dra. The CP stars with unsteady periods now represent a very diverse group with dissimilar O-C diagrams and time scales. We also discuss the causes of the period changes found and a possible cyclicity or chaoticity of them.

Context. TW Draconis is one of the best studied Algol-type eclipsing binaries. There is significant evidence for miscellaneous physical processes between interacting binary components manifesting themselves by period and light curve changes. Aims. Obtaining new set of photometric and spectroscopic observations, we analysed them together with the older spectroscopic and photometric data to build model of this eclipsing system with respect to observed changes of O-C diagram and light curve. Methods. Reduction of new spectra was carried out in the IRAF and SPEFO programs. Radial velocities were determined manually using SPEFO, by CCF using the Zverko's code and from the program KOREL. Orbital elements were derived with the FOTEL program and via disentangling with KOREL. The final combined solution was obtained with the programs PHOEBE and FOTEL. Results. Photometry shows small irregularities in light curves as a results of pulsating of one component and spot activity. Using net of KOREL outputs we found the mass ratio q=0.405(3).We confirm the presence of stellar matter around the primary. Even after subtraction of ADS 9706B influence, light curve solutions show third light in the system. Models in FOTEL and Phoebe are presented. Conclusions. TW Dra is an astrophysically very interesting eclipsing binary. Future combination of interferometry, spectroscopy, and photometry is promising. It could definitely confirm the hypothesis of quadruple system for TW Dra and explain behaviour of this system in complex.

Magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars of the upper part of the main sequence usually exhibit strictly periodic variations of their light, spectrum and magnetic field. These changes can be well explained using the oblique rotator model of the rigidly rotating star with persistent photometric spots, uneven horizontal abundance of chemical elements and dipole-like magnetic field. Long-term observations of mCP stars variability enable to determine their rotational periods with an extraordinary accuracy and reliability. We compare rotational periods of mCP stars with those of normal main sequence stars of the same spectral type and discuss the found discrepancies. We also discuss the cases of mCP stars V901 Ori, SX Ari, CU Vir, (and possibly also EE Dra), which have been reported to display an increase of their rotational periods.

Although photometric variations of chemically peculiar (CP) stars are frequently used to determine their rotational periods, the detailed mechanism of their light variability remains poorly understood. We simulate the light variability of the star HR 7224 using the observed surface distribution of silicon and iron. We used the TLUSTY model atmospheres calculated for the appropriate silicon and iron abundances to obtain the emergent flux and to predict the rotationally modulated light curve of the star. We also obtained additional photometric measurements and employed our own regression procedure to derive a more precise estimate of the light elements. We show that the light variation of the star can be explained as a result of i) the uneven surface distribution of the elements, ii) the flux redistribution from the ultraviolet to the visible part of the spectrum, and iii) rotation of the star. We show that the silicon bound-free transitions and iron bound-bound transitions provide the main contribution to the flux redistribution, although an additional source of opacity is needed. We confirm that numerous iron lines significantly contribute to the well-known depression at 5200 A and discuss the connection between iron abundance and the value of peculiarity index a. The uneven surface distribution of silicon and iron is able to explain most of the rotationally modulated light variation in the star HR 7224.

We assumed that among these photometrically simply behaving (PSB) stars could be found such ones which have a single photometric spot. The insight into such simple situations would help us to comprehend more complicated cases. Light curves of the 19 PSB mCP stars proved to be generally nearly symmetric but surprisingly diverse. The analysis shows that only in the case of HD 110956B, HD 188041, and perhaps HD 193722 we are able to explain their photometric behaviour by a simple one-spot model. Consequently, occurrence of more than one photometric spot on an mCP star is typical.

All the 1895 particular observations heve been processed simultaneously. We confirm the previously suspected increase of the period in HD 37776 which is a record-breaking among CP stars. The mean rate of the period increase during the last 31 years is 0.541+-0.020 s per year. We interpret this ongoing period increase as the slowing down of the star's surface rotation due to momentum loss through events and processes in its magnetosphere.

We present preliminary results of the generalized Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of light curves of 82 magnetic chemically peculiar (further mCP) stars applied to 54 thousand individual photometric observations in the uvby and Hp colours taken from the "On-line database of photometric observations of mCP stars". We show that every of the observed light curves (LCs) can be, with a sufficient accuracy, represented using five parameters of a harmonic polynomial of the second order, and that the third order and higher harmonics reflect only a noise. We found that a prevailing majority of the uvbyHp LCs can be satisfactorily well represented by a linear combination of a constant term and one or two (extraordinarily three) basic, mutually orthonormal functions, which reduces the number of parameters necessarily needed to describe the set of the LCs of a particular star. While the shape of an individual LC depends on the individual distribution of photometric spots on the surface of a rotating star, its amplitude depends on the mechanism of variability. To describe the amplitude of LCs we introduce a robust quantity effective amplitude. Applying the PCA to the set of the effective amplitudes of the LCs in all five colours we revealed at least three different sources of the light variability showing different wavelength dependence. The amplitudes of all the LCs harbor a component monotonously decreasing with increasing wavelengths. The second component reaches a remarkable extremum in the $v$ colour, and is in antiphase relative to the remaining four colours. It occurs particularly at cooler mCP-s having a high degree of the chemical peculiarity. The third component reflects a remarkable diversity of the light curves in the $u$ colour found in a few mCP stars.
