Magnetic quantum oscillations (MQO) of Hall coefficient are measured in rare-earth tritelluride TmTe$_{3}$ and shown to be much stronger and persist to higher temperature than the Shubnikov oscillations. It is general for MQO in strongly anisotropic metals, and the combined measurements of Hall and diagonal magnetoresistance provide useful informations about the electronic structure. The ratio of their MQO amplitudes depends linearly on magnetic field, and its slope gives a simple and accurate measurement tool of the electron mean free time and its temperature dependence.

The Dirac point gap at the surface of the antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is a highly debated issue. While the early photoemission measurements reported on large gaps in agreement with theoretical predictions, other experiments found vanishingly small splitting of the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ Dirac cone. Here, we study the crystalline and electronic structure of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$(0001) using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S), micro($μ$)-laser angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our topographic STM images clearly reveal features corresponding to point defects in the surface Te and subsurface Bi layers that we identify with the aid of STM simulations as Bi$_\text{Te}$ antisites (Bi atoms at the Te sites) and Mn$_\text{Bi}$ substitutions (Mn atoms at the Bi sites), respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments further evidence the presence of cation (Mn-Bi) intermixing. Altogether, this affects the distribution of the Mn atoms, which, inevitably, leads to a deviation of the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ magnetic structure from that predicted for the ideal crystal structure. Our transport measurements suggest that the degree of this deviation varies from sample to sample. Consistently, the ARPES/STS experiments reveal that the Dirac point gap of the topological surface state is different for different samples/sample cleavages. Our DFT surface electronic structure calculations show that, due to the predominant localization of the topological surface state near the Bi layers, Mn$_\text{Bi}$ defects can cause a strong reduction of the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ Dirac point gap, given the recently proved antiparallel alignment of the Mn$_\text{Bi}$ moments with respect to those of the Mn layer. Our results provide a key to puzzle out the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ Dirac point gap mystery.

Quantum states of matter combining non-trivial topology and magnetism attract a lot of attention nowadays; the special focus is on magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) featuring quantum anomalous Hall and axion insulator phases. Feasibility of many novel phenomena that \emph{intrinsic} magnetic TIs may host depends crucially on our ability to engineer and efficiently tune their electronic and magnetic structures. Here, using angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy along with \emph{ab initio} calculations we report on a large family of intrinsic magnetic TIs in the homologous series of the van der Waals compounds (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_m$ with $m=0, ..., 6$. Magnetic, electronic and, consequently, topological properties of these materials depend strongly on the $m$ value and are thus highly tunable. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between the neighboring Mn layers strongly weakens on moving from MnBi2Te4 (m=0) to MnBi4Te7 (m=1), changes to ferromagnetic (FM) one in MnBi6Te10 (m=2) and disappears with further increase in m. In this way, the AFM and FM TI states are respectively realized in the $m=0,1$ and $m=2$ cases, while for $m \ge 3$ a novel and hitherto-unknown topologically-nontrivial phase arises, in which below the corresponding critical temperature the magnetizations of the non-interacting 2D ferromagnets, formed by the \MBT\, building blocks, are disordered along the third direction. The variety of intrinsic magnetic TI phases in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_m$ allows efficient engineering of functional van der Waals heterostructures for topological quantum computation, as well as antiferromagnetic and 2D spintronics.

We present detailed studies of the high-field magnetoresistance of the layered organic metal $κ$-(BETS)$_2$\-Mn\-[N(CN)$_2$]$_3$ under a pressure slightly above the insulator-metal transition. The experimental data are analysed in terms of the Fermi surface properties and compared with the results of first-principles band structure calculations. The calculated size and shape of the inplane Fermi surface are in very good agreement with those derived from Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations as well as the classical angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations. A comparison of the experimentally obtained effective cyclotron masses with the calculated band masses reveals electron correlations significantly dependent on the electron momentum. The momentum- or band-dependent mobility is also reflected in the behavior of the classical magnetoresistance anisotropy in a magnetic field parallel to layers. Other characteristics of the conducting system related to interlayer charge transfer and scattering mechanisms are discussed based on the experimental data. Besides the known high-field effects associated with the Fermi surface geometry, new pronounced features have been found in the angle-dependent magnetoresistance, which might be caused by coupling of the metallic charge transport to a magnetic instability in proximity to the metal-insulator phase boundary.

Despite immense advances in the field of topological materials, the antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFMTI) state, predicted in 2010, has been resisting experimental observation up to now. Here, using density functional theory and Monte Carlo method we predict and by means of structural, transport, magnetic, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements confirm for the first time realization of the AFMTI phase, that is hosted by the van der Waals layered compound MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. An interlayer AFM ordering makes MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ invariant with respect to the combination of the time-reversal ($Θ$) and primitive-lattice translation ($T_{1/2}$) symmetries, $S=ΘT_{1/2}$, which gives rise to the $Z_2$ topological classification of AFM insulators, $Z_2$ being equal to 1 for this material. The $S$-breaking (0001) surface of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ features a giant bandgap in the topological surface state thus representing an ideal platform for the observation of such long-sought phenomena as the quantized magnetoelectric coupling and intrinsic axion insulator state.

Crystal structure, band structure, conducting and magnetic properties of the salt have been studied. Below 30 K the material undergoes a metal-insulator transition, which is suppressed by applying a pressure of ~0.5kbar, leading to a superconducting ground state. While the structural and conducting properties are very similar to those of the parent salt $κ$-(BETS)$_2$Mn[N(CN)$_2$]$_3$, magnetic properties associated with localized moments in the anion layer are found to be surprisingly different.

Under a moderate pressure of 1.4\,kbar, required for stabilizing the metallic ground state, Shubnikov - de Haas oscillations, associated with a classical and a magnetic-breakdown cyclotron orbits on the cylindrical Fermi surface, have been found at fields above 10\,T. The effective cyclotron masses evaluated from the temperature dependence of the oscillation amplitudes reveal strong renormalization due to many-body interactions. The analysis of the relative strength of the oscillations corresponding to the different orbits and its dependence on magnetic field suggests an enhanced role of electron-electron interactions on flat parts of the Fermi surface.

Slow oscillations (SlO) of the in-plane magnetoresistance with a frequency less than 4 T are observed in the rare-earth tritellurides and proposed as an effective tool to explore the electronic structure in various strongly anisotropic quasi-two-dimensional compounds. Contrary to the usual Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations, SlO originate not from small Fermi-surface pockets, but from the entanglement of close frequencies due to a finite interlayer transfer integral, either between the two Te planes forming a bilayer or between two adjacent bilayers. From the observed angular dependence of the frequency and the phase of SlO we argue that they originate from the bilayer splitting rather than from the Fermi-surface war**. The SlO frequency gives the value of the interlayer transfer integral $\approx 1$ meV for TbTe$_3$ and GdTe$_3$.

The low-temperature charge-density-wave (CDW) state in the layered organic metals $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$MHg(SCN)$_4$ has been studied by means of the Shubnikov -- de Haas and de Haas -- van Alphen effects. In addition to the dominant alpha-frequency, which is also observed in the normal state, both the magnetoresistance and magnetic torque possess a slowly oscillating component. These slow oscillations provide a firm evidence for the CDW-induced reconstruction of the original cylindrical Fermi surface. The alpha-oscillations of the interlayer magnetoresistance exhibit an anomalous phase inversion in the CDW state, whereas the de Haas -- van Alphen signal maintains the normal phase. We argue that the anomaly may be attributed to the magnetic-breakdown origin of the alpha-oscillations in the CDW state. A theoretical model illustrating the possibility of a phase inversion in the oscillating interlayer conductivity in the presence of a spatially fluctuating magnetic breakdown gap is proposed.

The experimental data demonstrate strong deviations from the Bloch-Grüneisen behavior, namely the tendency to saturation of the resistivity at high temperatures. The observed behavior of the resistivity is explained within the two band scenario when the first band is strongly coupled and relatively clean, while the second band is weakly coupled and is characterized by much stronger impurity scattering.

The transport and superconducting properties of Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2 single crystals with T_c = 31 K were studied. Both in-plane and out-of plane resistivity was measured by modified Montgomery method. The in-plane resistivity for all studied samples, obtained in the course of the same synthesis, is almost the same, unlike to the out-of plane resistivity, which differ considerably. We have found that the resistivity anisotropy γ=ρ_c /ρ_{ab} is almost temperature independent and lies in the range 10-30 for different samples. This, probably, indicates on the extrinsic nature of high out-of-plane resistivity, which may appear due to the presence of the flat defects along Fe-As layers in the samples. This statement is supported by comparatively small effective mass anisotropy, obtained from the upper critical field measurements, and from the observation of the so-called "Friedel transition", which indicates on the existence of some disorder in the samples in c-direction.

Both orders are found to emerge from an anisotropic 3D metallic state, upon which antiferromagnetism opposes superconductivity by driving the doped holes towards localization. Despite the competition, the superconductivity sets in before the AF order is completely destroyed and coexists with latter in a certain range of hole do**. We find also that strong magnetic fields affect the AF-SC interplay by both suppressing the superconductivity and stabilizing the Neel order.

The established phase diagram demonstrates that the AF and SC regions apparently overlap: the superconductivity in RBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}, in contrast to La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, sets in before the long-range AF order is completely destroyed by hole do**. Magnetoresistance measurements of superconducting crystals with low T_c<15-20 K give a clear view of the magnetic-field induced superconductivity suppression and recovery of the long-range AF state. What still remains to be understood is whether the AF order actually persists in the SC state or just revives when the superconductivity is suppressed, and, in the former case, whether the antiferromagnetism and superconductivity reside in nanoscopically separated phases or coexist on an atomic scale.

Abstract:
In the fractional quantum Hall effect regime we measure diagonal ($ρ_{xx}$) and Hall ($ρ_{xy}$) magnetoresistivity tensor components of two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in gated GaAs/Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$As heterojunctions, together with capacitance between 2DES and the gate. We observe 1/3- and 2/3-fractional quantum Hall effect at rather low magnetic fields where corresponding fractional mi…

We observe 1/3- and 2/3-fractional quantum Hall effect at rather low magnetic fields where corresponding fractional minima in the thermodynamical density of states have already disappeared manifesting complete suppression of the quasiparticle energy gaps.

Abstract:
Superconductivity was found for a rhenium boride Re3B at Tc=4.7 K and for ReB2 with Tc in the range from 4.5 to 6.3 K depending on the boron concentrations. Both compounds have the structure different from that of the simple layered diborides, in particular from MgB2.
