The deployment of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites with terrestrial networks can potentially increase the efficiency and reduce the cost of relaying content from a data center to a set of edge caches hosted by 6G and beyond enabled macro base stations. In this work, the characteristics of the communication system and the mobility of LEO satellites are thoroughly discussed to describe the channel characteristics of LEO satellites, in terms of their frequency bands, latency, Doppler shifts, fading effects, and satellite access. Three different scenarios are proposed for the relay of data from data centers to edge caches via LEO satellites, which are the "Immediate Forward", "Relay and Forward", and "Store and Forward" scenarios. A comparative problem formulation is utilized to obtain numerical results from simulations to demonstrate the effectiveness and validity as well as the trade-offs of the proposed system model. The simulation results indicate that the integration of LEO satellites in edge caching for 6G and beyond networks decreased the required transmission power for relaying the data from the data center to the edge caches. Future research directions based on the proposed model are discussed.

We investigate THz communication uplink multiple access using cascaded intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) assuming correlated channels. Two independent objectives to be achieved via adjusting the phases of the cascaded IRSs: 1) maximizing the received rate of a desired user under interference from the second user and 2) maximizing the sum rate of both users. The resulting optimization problems are non-convex. For the first objective, we devise a sub-optimal analytical solution by maximizing the received power of the desired user, however, this results in an over determined system. Approximate solutions using pseudo-inverse and block-based approaches are attempted. For the second objective, a loose upperbound is derived and an exhaustive search solution is utilized. We then use deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to solve both objectives. Results reveal the suitability of DRL for such complex configurations. For the first objective, the DRL-based solution is superior to the sub-optimal mathematical methods, while for the second objective, it produces sum rates almost close to the exhaustive search. Further, the results reveal that as the correlation-coefficient increases, the sum rate of DRL increases, since it benefits from the presence of correlation in the channel to improve statistical learning.

This paper focuses on providing an analytical framework for the quantification and evaluation of the pointing error for a general case at high-frequency millimeter wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) communication links. For this aim, we first derive the the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution functions (CDF) of the pointing error between an unstable transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx), that have different antenna patterns and for which the vibrations are not similar in the Yaw and Pitch directions. The special case where the Tx and Rx are both equipped with uniform linear array antenna is also investigated. In addition, using $α-μ$ distribution, which is a valid model for small-scale fading of mmWave/THz links, the end-to-end PDF and CDF of the considered channel is derived for all the considered cases. Finally, by employing Monte-Carlo simulations, the accuracy of the analytical expressions is verified and the performance of the system is studied.

We propose a fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)-based millimeter wave (mmWave) backhaul links, that is offered as a cost effective and easy to deploy solution, to connect a disaster or remote area to the nearest core network. First, we fully characterize the single relay fixed-wing UAV-based communication system by taking into account the effects of realistic physical parameters, such as the UAV's circular path, critical points of the flight path, heights and positions of obstacles, flight altitude, tracking error, the severity of UAV's vibrations, the real 3D antenna pattern, mmWave atmospheric channel loss, temperature and air pressure. Second, we derive the distribution of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) metric, which is based on the sum of a series of Dirac delta functions. Using the SNR distribution, we derive closed-form expressions for the outage probability and the ergodic capacity of the considered system as a function of all system parameters. To provide an acceptable quality of service for longer link lengths, we extend the analytical expressions to a multi-relay system. The accuracy of the closed-form expressions are verified by Monte-Carlo simulations. Finally, by providing sufficient simulation results, we investigate the effects of key channel parameters such as antenna pattern gain and flight path on the performance of the considered system; and we carefully analyze the relationships between these parameters in order to maximize the average channel capacity.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an urgent need to move to online teaching and develop innovations to guarantee the Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) are being fulfilled. The contributions of this paper are two-fold: the effects of an experimented teaching strategy, i.e. multi-course project-based learning (MPL) approach, are presented followed with online assessment techniques investigation for senior level electrical engineering (EE) courses at Qatar University. The course project of the senior course was designed in such a way that it helps in simultaneously attaining the objectives of the senior and capstone courses, that the students were taking at the same time. It is known that the MPL approach enhances the critical thinking capacity of students which is also a major outcome of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The developed project ensures the fulfillment of a series of SLOs, that are concentrated on soft engineering and project management skills. The difficulties of adopting the MPL method for the senior level courses are in aligning the project towards fulfilling the learning outcomes of every individual course. The study also provides the students feedback on online assessment techniques incorporated with the MPL, due to online teaching during COVID-19 pandemic. In order to provide a benchmark and to highlight the obtained results, the innovative teaching approaches were compared to conventional methods taught on the same senior course in a previous semester. Based on the feedback from teachers and students from previously conducted case study it was believed that the MPL approach would support the students. With the statistical analysis (Chi-square, two-tailed T statistics and hypothesis testing using z-test) it can be concluded that the MPL and online assessment actually help to achieve better attainment of the SLOs, even during a pandemic situation.

Next-generation wireless networks are facing spectrum shortage challenges, mainly due to, among other factors, the projected massive numbers of IoT connections and the emerging bandwidth-hungry applications that such networks ought to serve. Spectrum is scarce and expensive, and therefore, it is of crucial importance to devise dynamic and flexible spectrum access policies and techniques that yield optimal usage of such a precious resource. A new trend recently being adopted as a key solution to this spectrum scarcity challenge is to exploit higher frequency bands, namely mmWave bands, that were considered impractical few years ago, but are now becoming feasible due to recent advances in electronics. Though, fortunately, spectrum regulatory bodies have responded by allowing the use of new bands in the mmWave frequencies, much work still needs to be done to benefit from such new spectra.
In this paper, we discuss some key spectrum management challenges that pertain to dynamic spectrum access at the mmWave frequencies, which need to be overcome in order to promote dynamic spectrum sharing at these mmWave bands. We also propose new techniques that enable efficient dynamic spectrum sharing at the mmWave bands by addressing some of the discussed challenges, and highlight open research challenges that still need to be addressed to fully unleash the potential of dynamic spectrum sharing at mmWave bands.

Owing to the expeditious growth in the information and communication technologies, smart cities have raised the expectations in terms of efficient functioning and management. One key aspect of residents' daily comfort is assured through affording reliable traffic management and route planning. Comprehensively, the majority of the present trip planning applications and service providers are enabling their trip planning recommendations relying on shortest paths and/or fastest routes. However, such suggestions may discount drivers' preferences with respect to safe and less disturbing trips. Road anomalies such as cracks, potholes, and manholes induce risky driving scenarios and can lead to vehicles damages and costly repairs. Accordingly, in this paper, we propose a crowdsensing based dynamic route planning system. Leveraging both the vehicle motion sensors and the inertial sensors within the smart devices, road surface types and anomalies have been detected and categorized. In addition, the monitored events are geo-referenced utilizing GPS receivers on both vehicles and smart devices. Consequently, road segments assessments are conducted using fuzzy system models based on aspects such as the number of anomalies and their severity levels in each road segment. Afterward, another fuzzy model is adopted to recommend the best trip routes based on the road segments quality in each potential route. Extensive road experiments are held to build and show the potential of the proposed system.

Compressive sampling has shown great potential for making wideband spectrum sensing possible at sub-Nyquist sampling rates. As a result, there have recently been research efforts that aimed to develop techniques that leverage compressive sampling to enable compressed wideband spectrum sensing. These techniques consider homogeneous wideband spectrum where all bands are assumed to have similar PU traffic characteristics. In practice, however, wideband spectrum is not homogeneous, in that different spectrum bands could have different PU occupancy patterns. In fact, the nature of spectrum assignment, in which applications of similar types are often assigned bands within the same block, dictates that wideband spectrum is indeed heterogeneous, as different application types exhibit different behaviors. In this paper, we consider heterogeneous wideband spectrum, where we exploit this inherent, block-like structure of wideband spectrum to design efficient compressive spectrum sensing techniques that are well suited for heterogeneous wideband spectrum. We propose a weighted $\ell_1$-minimization sensing information recovery algorithm that achieves more stable recovery than that achieved by existing approaches while accounting for the variations of spectrum occupancy across both the time and frequency dimensions. Through intensive numerical simulations, we show that our approach achieves better performance when compared to the state-of-the-art approaches.

Handling the massive number of devices needed in numerous applications such as smart cities is a major challenge given the scarcity of spectrum resources. Dynamic spectrum access (DSA) is seen as a potential candidate to support the connectivity and spectrum access of these devices. We propose an efficient technique that relies on particle filtering to enable distributed resource allocation and sharing for large-scale dynamic spectrum access networks. More specifically, we take advantage of the high tracking capability of particle filtering to efficiently assign the available spectrum and power resources among cognitive users. Our proposed technique maximizes the per-user throughput while ensuring fairness among users, and it does so while accounting for the different users' quality of service requirements and the channel gains' variability. Through intensive simulations, we show that our proposed approach performs well by achieving high overall throughput while improving user's fairness under different objective functions. Furthermore, it achieves higher performance when compared to state-of-the-art techniques.

Energy harvesting emerges as a potential solution for prolonging the lifetime of the energy-constrained mobile wireless devices. In this paper, we focus on Radio Frequency (RF) energy harvesting for multiuser multicarrier mobile wireless networks. Specifically, we propose joint data and energy transfer optimization frameworks for powering mobile wireless devices through RF energy harvesting. We introduce a power utility that captures the power consumption cost at the base station (BS) and the used power from the users' batteries, and determine optimal power resource allocations that meet data rate requirements of downlink and uplink communications. Two types of harvesting capabilities are considered at each user: harvesting only from dedicated RF signals and hybrid harvesting from both dedicated and ambient RF signals. The developed frameworks increase the end users' battery lifetime at the cost of a slight increase in the BS power consumption. Several evaluation studies are conducted in order to validate our proposed frameworks.

Power consumption in such a scenario is discussed and compared to single user case, to evaluate the feasibility of employing spatial cognition from the power perspective. Closed form expressions are derived for the consumed power and data rate at different transmission schemes.
