Towards a Definition of Complex Software System

Complex Systems were identified and studied in different fields, such as physics, biology, and economics. These systems exhibit exciting properties such as self-organization, robust order, and emergence. In recent years, software systems displaying behaviors associated with Complex Systems are starting to appear, and these behaviors are showing previously unknown potential (e.g., GPT-based applications). Yet, there is no commonly shared definition of a Complex Software System that can serve as a key reference for academia to support research in the area. In this paper, we adopt the theory-to-research strategy to extract properties of Complex Systems from research in other fields, map** them to software systems to create a formal definition of a Complex Software System. We support the evolution of the properties through future validation, and we provide examples of the application of the definition. Overall, the definition will allow for a more precise, consistent, and rigorous frame of reference for conducting scientific research on software systems.

Observations of "Fresh" and Weathered Surfaces on Asteroid Pairs and Their Implications on the Rotational-Fission Mechanism

The rotational-fission of a rubble-pile asteroid can result in an "asteroid pair", two un-bound asteroids sharing similar orbits. This mechanism might exposes material that previously had never have been exposed to the weathering conditions of space. Therefore, the surfaces of asteroid pairs offer the opportunity to observe non-weathered fresh spectra. We report near-IR spectroscopic observations of 31 asteroids in pairs. We analyze their spectral slopes, 1 μm absorption band, taxonomy, and estimate the time elapsed since their separation. Analyzing the 19 S-complex objects in our sample, we find two fresh Q-type asteroids that are the first of their kind to be observed in the main-belt over the full visible and near-IR range. This solidly demonstrates that Q-type objects are not limited to the NEA population. The pairs in our sample present a range of fresh and weathered surfaces with no clear evidence for a correlation with the ages of the pairs. However, our sample includes old pairs (1 to 2 My) that present low spectral slopes. This illustrates a timescale of at least ~2 My before an object develops high spectral slope that is typical for S-type asteroids.
We discuss mechanisms that explain the existence of weathered pairs with young dynamical ages and find that the "secondary fission" model (Jacobson & Scheeres 2011) is the most robust with our observations since: 1) the secondary members in our sample present fresh parameters that tend to be fresher than their weathered primaries; 2) most of the fresh pairs in our sample have low size ratios between the secondary and the primary; 3) 33% of the primaries in our sample are fresh, similar to the prediction set by this model; 4) known satellites orbit two of the pairs in our sample with low size ratio and fresh surface; 5) there is no correlation between the weathering state and the primary shape as predicted by other models.

Main belt asteroids (6070) Rheinland and (54827) 2001NQ8 belong to a small population of couples of bodies which reside on very similar heliocentric orbits. Vokrouhlicky & Nesvorny (2008, AJ 136, 280) promoted a term "asteroid pairs", pointing out their common origin within the past tens to hundreds of ky. Previous attempts to reconstruct the initial configuration of Rheinland and 2001NQ8 at the time of their separation have led to the prediction that Rheinland's rotation should be retrograde. Here we report extensive photometric observations of this asteroid and use the lightcurve inversion technique to directly determine its rotation state and shape. We confirm the retrograde sense of rotation of Rheinland, with obliquity value constrained to be >= 140 deg. The ecliptic longitude of the pole position is not well constrained as yet. The asymmetric behavior of Rheinland's lightcurve reflects a sharp, near-planar edge in our convex shape representation of this asteroid. Our calibrated observations in the red filter also allow us to determine $H_R = 13.68\pm 0.05$ and $G = 0.31\pm 0.05$ values of the H-G system. With the characteristic color index $V-R = 0.49\pm 0.05$ for the S-type asteroids, we thus obtain $H = 14.17\pm 0.07$ for the absolute magnitude of (6070) Rheinland. This a significantly larger value than previously obtained from analysis of the astrometric survey observations. We next use the obliquity constraint for Rheinland to eliminate some degree of uncertainty in the past propagation of its orbit. This is because the sign of the past secular change of its semimajor axis due to the Yarkovsky effect is now constrained. Determination of the rotation state of the secondary component, asteroid (54827) 2001NQ8, is the key element in further constraining the age of the pair and its formation process.

We present an exploratory tool that extracts person names from multilingual news collections, matches name variants referring to the same person, and infers relationships between people based on the co-occurrence of their names in related news. A novel feature is the matching of name variants across languages and writing systems, including names written with the Greek, Cyrillic and Arabic writing system. Due to our highly multilingual setting, we use an internal standard representation for name representation and matching, instead of adopting the traditional bilingual approach to transliteration. This work is part of the news analysis system NewsExplorer that clusters an average of 25,000 news articles per day to detect related news within the same and across different languages.
