We unambiguously demonstrate, based on high-energy x-ray diffraction data and LDA calculations, that sodium-density stripes are formed in Na0.75CoO2 at low temperatures and rule out the previously proposed Na-ordering models. The LDA calculations prove, that the sodium-density stripes lead to a sizeable dip in the density of the Co-states at the Fermi level, pointing to band structure effects as a driving force for the stripe formation. This indicates that the sodium ordering is connected to stripe-like charge correlations within the CoO2 layers, leading to an astonishing similarity between the doped cuprates and the NaxCoO2 compounds.

We have used in-field neutron and X-ray single crystal diffraction to measure the incommensurability δ of the crystal and magnetic structure of multiferroic TbMnO3 . We show that the flop in the electric polarization at the critical field HC, for field H along the a− and b−axis coincides with a 1st order transition to a commensurate phase with propagation vector κ = (0, 1/4, 0). In-field X-ray diffraction measurements show that the quadratic magneto-elastic coupling breaks down with applied field as shown by the observation of the 1st harmonic lattice reflections above and below HC . This indicates that magnetic field induces a linear magneto-elastic coupling. We argue that the commensurate phase can be described by an ordering of Mn-O-Mn bond angles.

Structural properties of the spin chain and ladder compound Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ have been studied using diffraction with hard x-rays. Strong incommensurate modulation reflections are observed due to the lattice mismatch of the chain and ladder structure, respectively. While modulation reflections of low orders display only a weak temperature independence, higher orders dramatically increase in intensity when cooling the sample to 10 K. All observed modulation reflections are indexed within the super space group symmetry and no structural phase transition could be identified between 10 K and room temperature. We argue that these modulation reflections are not caused by a five-fold periodicity of the chain lattice, as claimed by Fukuda et al. Phys. Rev. B 66, 012104 (2002), but that holes localize in the potential given by the lattice modulation, which in turn gives rise to a further deformation of the lattice.

We report a x-ray resonant diffraction study of the perovskite Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3. At the Mn K-edge, this technique is sensitive to details of the electronic structure of the Mn atoms. We discuss the resonant x-ray spectra measured above and below the charge and orbital ordering phase transition temperature (TCOO = 232 K), and present a detailed analysis of the energy and polarization dependence of the resonant scattering. The analysis confirms that the structural transition is a transition to an orbitally ordered phase in which inequivalent Mn atoms are ordered in a CE-type pattern. The Mn atoms differ mostly by their 3d orbital occupation. We find that the charge disproportionation is incomplete, 3d^{3.5-δ} and 3d^{3.5+δ} with δ\ll0.5 . A revised CE-type model is considered in which there are two Mn sublattices, each with partial e_{g} occupancy. One sublattice consists of Mn atoms with the 3x^{2}-r^{2} or 3y^{2}-r^{2} orbitals partially occupied, the other sublattice with the x^{2}-y^{2} orbital partially occupied.

We have studied the cubic to tetragonal phase transition in epitaxial SrTiO$_3$ films under various biaxial strain conditions using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Measuring the superlattice peak associated with TiO$_6$ octahedra rotation in the low temperature tetragonal phase indicates the presence of a phase transition whose critical temperature is a strong function of strain, with T$_C$ as much as 50K above the corresponding bulk temperature. Surprisingly, the lattice constants evolve smoothly through the transition with no indication of a phase change. This signals an important change in the nature of the phase transition due to the epitaxy strain and substrate clam** effect. The internal degrees of freedom (TiO$_6$ rotations) have become uncoupled from the overall lattice shape.

The spin-density wave (SDW) and charge-density wave (CDW) order in superconducting La1.45Nd0.4Sr0.15CuO4 were studied under an applied magnetic field using neutron and X-ray diffraction techniques. In zero field, incommensurate (IC) SDW order appears below ~ 40 K, which is characterized by neutron diffraction peaks at (1/2 +/- 0.134, 1/2 +/- 0.134, 0). The intensity of these IC peaks increases rapidly below T_Nd ~ 8 K due to an ordering of the Nd^3+ spins. The application of a 1 T magnetic field parallel to the c-axis markedly diminishes the intensity below T_Nd, while only a slight decrease in intensity is observed at higher temperatures for fields up to 7 T. Our interpretation is that the c-axis field suppresses the parasitic Nd^3+ spin order at the incommensurate wave vector without disturbing the stripe order of Cu^2+ spins. Consistent with this picture, the CDW order, which appears below 60 K, shows no change for magnetic fields up to 4 T. These results stand in contrast to the significant field-induced enhancement of the SDW order observed in superconducting La2-xSrxCuO4 with x ~ 0.12 and stage-4 La2CuO4+y. The differences can be understood in terms of the relative volume fraction exhibiting stripe order in zero field, and the collective results are consistent with the idea that suppression of superconductivity by vortices nucleates local patches of stripe order.

We review our recent x-ray scattering studies of charge and orbital order in doped manganites, with specific emphasis on the role of orbital correlations in Pr_1-xCa_xMnO_3. For x=0.25, we find an orbital structure indistinguishable from the undoped structure with long range orbital order at low temperatures. For do**s 0.3<x<0.5, we find scattering consistent with a charge and orbitally ordered CE-type structure. While in each case the charge order peaks are resolution limited, the orbital order exhibits only short range correlations. We report the do** dependence of the correlation length and discuss the connection between the orbital correlations and the finite magnetic correlation length observed on the Mn^3+ sublattice with neutron scattering techniques. The physical origin of these domains, which appear to be isotropic, remains unclear. We find that weak orbital correlations persist well above the phase transitions, with a correlation length of 1-2 lattice constants at high temperatures. Significantly, we observe similar correlations at high temperatures in La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3, which does not have an orbitally ordered ground state, and we conclude that such correlations are robust to variations in the relative strength of the electron-phonon coupling.

We report an x-ray scattering study of octahedral tilt ordering in the manganite series Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ with x=0.4 and 0.25 and in LaMnO$_3$. The sensitivity to tilt ordering is achieved by tuning the incident x-ray energy to the L$_I$, L$_{II}$ and L$_{III}$ absorption edges of Pr and La, respectively. The resulting energy-dependent profiles are characterized by a dipole-resonant peak and higher energy fine structure. The polarization dependence is predominantly $σ$-to-$π$ and the azimuthal dependence follows a sin-squared behavior. These results are similar to those obtained in recent x-ray scattering studies of orbital ordering carried out in these same materials at the Mn K edge. They lead to a description of the cross-section in terms of Templeton scattering in which the tilt ordering breaks the symmetry at the rare earth site. The most interesting result of the present work is our observation that octahedral tilt ordering persists above the orbital ordering transition temperatures in all three samples. Indeed, we identify separate structural transitions which may be associated with the onset of orbital and tilt ordering, respectively, and characterize the loss of tilt ordering versus temperature in LaMnO$_3$.

We interpret the scattering in terms of correlated polarons and measure isotropic correlation lengths of 1-2 lattice constants in both samples. Based on the wavevector and correlation lengths, the correlated polarons are found to be consistent with CE-type bipolarons. Differences in behavior between the samples arise as they are cooled through their respective transition temperatures and become ferromagnetic metallic (La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}) or charge and orbitally ordered insulating (Pr_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}). Since the primary difference between the two samples is the trivalent cation size, these results illustrate the robust nature of the correlated polarons to variations in the relative strength of the electron-phonon coupling, and the sensitivity of the low-temperature ground state to such variations.

We present the results of a systematic x-ray scattering study of the charge and orbital ordering in the manganite series Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ with $x$=0.25, 0.4 and 0.5. The temperature dependence of the scattering at the charge and orbital wavevectors, and of the lattice constants, was characterized throughout the ordered phase of each sample. It was found that the charge and orbital order wavevectors are commensurate with the lattice, in striking contrast to the results of earlier electron diffraction studies of samples with $x$=0.5. High momentum-transfer resolution studies of the x=0.4 and 0.5 samples further revealed that while long-range charge order is present, long-range orbital order is never established. Above the charge/orbital ordering temperature T$_o$, the charge order fluctuations are more highly correlated than the orbital fluctuations. This suggests that charge order drives orbital order in these samples. In addition, a longitudinal modulation of the lattice with the same periodicity as the charge and orbital ordering was discovered in the x=0.4 and 0.5 samples. For x=0.25, only long-range orbital order was observed with no indication of charge ordering, nor of an additional lattice modulation. We also report the results of a preliminary investigation of the loss of charge and orbital ordering in the x=0.4 sample by application of a magnetic field. Finally, the polarization and azimuthal dependence of the charge and orbital ordering in these compounds is characterized both in the resonant and nonresonant limits, and compared with the predictions of current theories. The results are qualitatively consistent with both cluster and LDA+U calculations of the electronic structure.

Ortho-II is a 3D ordered structural phase, the remaining ones are essentially 2D. None of the superstructures develops long range ordering. Studies of the ortho-II ordering properties in samples prepared with x=0.5 but by different methods show that finite size domains with internal thermodynamic equilibrium are formed. The crystal perfection as well as the thermal annealing history determine the domain size. The temperature dependence of the observed superstructure ordering is investigated explicitly and a structural phase diagram is presented.

High resolution measurements reveal, however, that long range orbital order is never achieved. Rather, an orbital domain state is formed. Above T_O, the charge order fluctuations are more highly correlated than the orbital fluctuations. Similar phenomenology is observed in a magnetic field.
