Abstract:
We give in this paper an isomorphism theorem between derived functors over categories of modules. There is a nice class of categories that gives examples in which this theorem applies for a special construction. This leads us to a new interpretation of a theorem of Pirashvili and Richter about cyclic homology and Hochschild homology.

We have studied the cubic to tetragonal phase transition in epitaxial SrTiO$_3$ films under various biaxial strain conditions using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Measuring the superlattice peak associated with TiO$_6$ octahedra rotation in the low temperature tetragonal phase indicates the presence of a phase transition whose critical temperature is a strong function of strain, with T$_C$ as much as 50K above the corresponding bulk temperature. Surprisingly, the lattice constants evolve smoothly through the transition with no indication of a phase change. This signals an important change in the nature of the phase transition due to the epitaxy strain and substrate clam** effect. The internal degrees of freedom (TiO$_6$ rotations) have become uncoupled from the overall lattice shape.

The spin-density wave (SDW) and charge-density wave (CDW) order in superconducting La1.45Nd0.4Sr0.15CuO4 were studied under an applied magnetic field using neutron and X-ray diffraction techniques. In zero field, incommensurate (IC) SDW order appears below ~ 40 K, which is characterized by neutron diffraction peaks at (1/2 +/- 0.134, 1/2 +/- 0.134, 0). The intensity of these IC peaks increases rapidly below T_Nd ~ 8 K due to an ordering of the Nd^3+ spins. The application of a 1 T magnetic field parallel to the c-axis markedly diminishes the intensity below T_Nd, while only a slight decrease in intensity is observed at higher temperatures for fields up to 7 T. Our interpretation is that the c-axis field suppresses the parasitic Nd^3+ spin order at the incommensurate wave vector without disturbing the stripe order of Cu^2+ spins. Consistent with this picture, the CDW order, which appears below 60 K, shows no change for magnetic fields up to 4 T. These results stand in contrast to the significant field-induced enhancement of the SDW order observed in superconducting La2-xSrxCuO4 with x ~ 0.12 and stage-4 La2CuO4+y. The differences can be understood in terms of the relative volume fraction exhibiting stripe order in zero field, and the collective results are consistent with the idea that suppression of superconductivity by vortices nucleates local patches of stripe order.

A generic property of biological, social and economical networks is their ability to evolve in time, creating and suppressing interactions. We approach this issue within the framework of an adaptive network of agents playing a Prisoner's Dilemma game, where each agent plays with its local neighbors, collects an aggregate payoff and imitates the strategy of its best neighbor. We allow the agents to adapt their local neighborhood according to their satisfaction level and the strategy played. We show that a steady state is reached, where the strategy and network configurations remain stationary. While the fraction of cooperative agents is high in these states, their average payoff is lower than the one attained by the defectors. The system self-organizes in such a way that the structure of links in the network is quite inhomogeneous, revealing the occurrence of cooperator ``leaders'' with a very high connectivity, which guarantee that global cooperation can be sustained in the whole network. Perturbing the leaders produces drastic changes of the network, leading to global dynamical cascades. These cascades induce a transient oscillation in the population of agents between the nearly all-defectors state and the all-cooperators outcome, before setting again in a state of high global cooperation.

We review our recent x-ray scattering studies of charge and orbital order in doped manganites, with specific emphasis on the role of orbital correlations in Pr_1-xCa_xMnO_3. For x=0.25, we find an orbital structure indistinguishable from the undoped structure with long range orbital order at low temperatures. For do**s 0.3<x<0.5, we find scattering consistent with a charge and orbitally ordered CE-type structure. While in each case the charge order peaks are resolution limited, the orbital order exhibits only short range correlations. We report the do** dependence of the correlation length and discuss the connection between the orbital correlations and the finite magnetic correlation length observed on the Mn^3+ sublattice with neutron scattering techniques. The physical origin of these domains, which appear to be isotropic, remains unclear. We find that weak orbital correlations persist well above the phase transitions, with a correlation length of 1-2 lattice constants at high temperatures. Significantly, we observe similar correlations at high temperatures in La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3, which does not have an orbitally ordered ground state, and we conclude that such correlations are robust to variations in the relative strength of the electron-phonon coupling.

The transition from phase chaos to defect chaos in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) is related to saddle-node bifurcations of modulated amplitude waves (MAWs). First, the spatial period P of MAWs is shown to be limited by a maximum P_SN which depends on the CGLE coefficients; MAW-like structures with period larger than P_SN evolve to defects. Second, slowly evolving near-MAWs with average phase gradients $ν\approx 0$ and various periods occur naturally in phase chaotic states of the CGLE. As a measure for these periods, we study the distributions of spacings p between neighboring peaks of the phase gradient. A systematic comparison of p and P_SN as a function of coefficients of the CGLE shows that defects are generated at locations where p becomes larger than P_SN. In other words, MAWs with period P_SN represent ``critical nuclei'' for the formation of defects in phase chaos and may trigger the transition to defect chaos. Since rare events where p becomes sufficiently large to lead to defect formation may only occur after a long transient, the coefficients where the transition to defect chaos seems to occur depend on system size and integration time. We conjecture that in the regime where the maximum period P_SN has diverged, phase chaos persists in the thermodynamic limit.

We report an x-ray scattering study of octahedral tilt ordering in the manganite series Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ with x=0.4 and 0.25 and in LaMnO$_3$. The sensitivity to tilt ordering is achieved by tuning the incident x-ray energy to the L$_I$, L$_{II}$ and L$_{III}$ absorption edges of Pr and La, respectively. The resulting energy-dependent profiles are characterized by a dipole-resonant peak and higher energy fine structure. The polarization dependence is predominantly $σ$-to-$π$ and the azimuthal dependence follows a sin-squared behavior. These results are similar to those obtained in recent x-ray scattering studies of orbital ordering carried out in these same materials at the Mn K edge. They lead to a description of the cross-section in terms of Templeton scattering in which the tilt ordering breaks the symmetry at the rare earth site. The most interesting result of the present work is our observation that octahedral tilt ordering persists above the orbital ordering transition temperatures in all three samples. Indeed, we identify separate structural transitions which may be associated with the onset of orbital and tilt ordering, respectively, and characterize the loss of tilt ordering versus temperature in LaMnO$_3$.

We interpret the scattering in terms of correlated polarons and measure isotropic correlation lengths of 1-2 lattice constants in both samples. Based on the wavevector and correlation lengths, the correlated polarons are found to be consistent with CE-type bipolarons. Differences in behavior between the samples arise as they are cooled through their respective transition temperatures and become ferromagnetic metallic (La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}) or charge and orbitally ordered insulating (Pr_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}). Since the primary difference between the two samples is the trivalent cation size, these results illustrate the robust nature of the correlated polarons to variations in the relative strength of the electron-phonon coupling, and the sensitivity of the low-temperature ground state to such variations.

We present the results of a systematic x-ray scattering study of the charge and orbital ordering in the manganite series Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ with $x$=0.25, 0.4 and 0.5. The temperature dependence of the scattering at the charge and orbital wavevectors, and of the lattice constants, was characterized throughout the ordered phase of each sample. It was found that the charge and orbital order wavevectors are commensurate with the lattice, in striking contrast to the results of earlier electron diffraction studies of samples with $x$=0.5. High momentum-transfer resolution studies of the x=0.4 and 0.5 samples further revealed that while long-range charge order is present, long-range orbital order is never established. Above the charge/orbital ordering temperature T$_o$, the charge order fluctuations are more highly correlated than the orbital fluctuations. This suggests that charge order drives orbital order in these samples. In addition, a longitudinal modulation of the lattice with the same periodicity as the charge and orbital ordering was discovered in the x=0.4 and 0.5 samples. For x=0.25, only long-range orbital order was observed with no indication of charge ordering, nor of an additional lattice modulation. We also report the results of a preliminary investigation of the loss of charge and orbital ordering in the x=0.4 sample by application of a magnetic field. Finally, the polarization and azimuthal dependence of the charge and orbital ordering in these compounds is characterized both in the resonant and nonresonant limits, and compared with the predictions of current theories. The results are qualitatively consistent with both cluster and LDA+U calculations of the electronic structure.

The excitation mechanism of the {\it DX} centers into their shallow donor state was revealed by studying the photoconductance along with fluorescence. The photoconductance as a function of incident X-ray energy exhibits an edge both at the Ga and As K-edge, implying that core-hole excitation of Ga and As are efficient primary steps for the excitation of {\it DX} centers. A high quantum yield ($\gg 1$) suggests that the excitation is indirect and nonlocal, due to secondary electrons, holes, and fluorescence photons.

We introduce and describe periodic coherent structures of the CGLE, called Modulated Amplitude Waves (MAWs). MAWs of various period P occur naturally in phase chaotic states. A bifurcation study of the MAWs reveals that for sufficiently large period P, pairs of MAWs cease to exist via a saddle-node bifurcation. For periods beyond this bifurcation, incoherent near-MAW structures occur which evolve toward defects. This leads to our main result: the transition from phase to defect chaos takes place when the periods of MAWs in phase chaos are driven beyond their saddle-node bifurcation.

Studies of the ortho-II ordering properties in samples prepared with x=0.5 but by different methods show that finite size domains with internal thermodynamic equilibrium are formed. The crystal perfection as well as the thermal annealing history determine the domain size. Below the ordering temperature, T_O=245 K, the charge and orbital order intensities follow the same temperature dependence, including an increase at the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, T_N. High resolution measurements reveal, however, that long range orbital order is never achieved. Rather, an orbital domain state is formed. Above T_O, the charge order fluctuations are more highly correlated than the orbital fluctuations. Similar phenomenology is observed in a magnetic field. We conclude that the charge order drives the orbital order at the transition.
