Celebrating Loday's Associahedron
Abstract: We survey Jean-Louis Loday's vertex description of the associahedron, and its far reaching influence in combinatorics, discrete geometry and algebra. Landau on Chess Tournaments and Google's PageRank
Abstract: In his first mathematical paper, published in 1895 when he was 18, Edmund Landau suggested a new way to determine the winner of a chess tournament by not simply adding for each player the fixed number of points they would get for each win or draw, but rather by considering the performance of all players in the tournament relative to each other: each player would get more credit for games won or dr… ▽ More

On the Dimensions of the Realization Spaces of Polytopes
Abstract: Robertson (1988) suggested a model for the realization space of a convex d-dimensional polytope and an approach via the implicit function theorem, which -- in the case of a full rank Jacobian -- proves that the realization space is a manifold of dimension NG(P):=d(f_0+f_{d-1})-f_{0,d-1}, which is the natural guess for the dimension given by the number of variables minus the number of quadratic equ… ▽ More

Equivariant Cohomology of Configuration Spaces mod 2: The State of the Art
Abstract: The equivariant cohomology of the classical configuration space $F(\mathbb{R}^d,n)$ has been been of great interest and has been studied intensively starting with the classical papers by Artin (1925/1947) on the theory of braids, by Fox and Neuwirth (1962), Fadell and Neuwirth (1962), and Arnol'd (1969). Combinatorial Inscribability Obstructions for Higher-Dimensional Polytopes
Abstract: For $3$-dimensional convex polytopes, inscribability is a classical property that is relatively well-understood due to its relation with Delaunay subdivisions of the plane and hyperbolic geometry. In particular, inscribability can be tested in polynomial time, and for every $f$-vector of $3$-polytopes, there exists an inscribable polytope with that $f$-vector. Characterizing face and flag vector pairs for polytopes
Abstract: Grünbaum, Barnette, and Reay in 1974 completed the characterization of the pairs $(f_i,f_j)$ of face numbers of $4$-dimensional polytopes. Abstract: We analyze a remarkable class of centrally symmetric polytopes, the Hansen polytopes of split graphs. We confirm Kalai's 3^d-conjecture for such polytopes (they all have at least 3^d nonempty faces) and show that the Hanner polytopes among them (which have exactly 3^d nonempty faces) correspond to threshold graphs. Our study produces a new family of Hansen polytopes that have only 3^d+16 nonempty… ▽ More

Inscribable stacked polytopes
Abstract: We characterize the combinatorial types of stacked d-polytopes that are inscribable. Equivalently, we identify the triangulations of a simplex by stellar subdivisions that can be realized as Delaunay triangulations.

Realizing the associahedron: Mysteries and questions
Abstract: There are many open problems and some mysteries connected to the realizations of the associahedra as convex polytopes. In this note, we describe three -- concerning special realizations with the vertices on a sphere, the space of all possible realizations, and possible realizations of the multiassociahedron.

Many non-equivalent realizations of the associahedron
Abstract: Hohlweg and Lange (2007) and Santos (2004, unpublished) have found two different ways of constructing exponential families of realizations of the n-dimensional associahedron with normal vectors in {0,1,-1}^n, generalizing the constructions of Loday (2004) and Chapoton-Fomin-Zelevinsky (2002). We classify the associahedra obtained by these constructions modulo linear equivalence of their normal fan… ▽ More

A tight colored Tverberg theorem for maps to manifolds
Abstract: We prove that any continuous map of an N-dimensional simplex Delta_N with colored vertices to a d-dimensional manifold M must map r points from disjoint rainbow faces of Delta_N to the same point in M: For this we have to assume that N \geq (r-1)(d+1), no r vertices of Delta_N get the same color, and our proof needs that r is a prime. A face of Delta_N is a rainbow face if all vertices have differ… ▽ More

Projecting lattice polytopes without interior lattice points
Abstract: We show that up to unimodular equivalence there are only finitely many d-dimensional lattice polytopes without interior lattice points that do not admit a lattice projection onto a (d-1)-dimensional lattice polytope without interior lattice points. This was conjectured by Treutlein. As an immediate corollary, we get a short proof of a recent result of Averkov, Wagner and Weismantel, namely the fin… ▽ More

Three non-equivalent realizations of the associahedron
Abstract: We review three realizations of the associahedron that arise as secondary polytopes, from cluster algebras, and as Minkowski sums of simplices, and show that under any choice of parameters, the resulting associahedra are affinely non-equivalent.

Optimal bounds for the colored Tverberg problem
Abstract: We prove a "Tverberg type" multiple intersection theorem. It strengthens the prime case of the original Tverberg theorem from 1966, as well as the topological Tverberg theorem of Barany et al. (1980), by adding color constraints. It also provides an improved bound for the (topological) colored Tverberg problem of Barany & Larman (1992) that is tight in the prime case and asymptotically optimal in… ▽ More

Polyhedral Surfaces in Wedge Products
Abstract: We introduce the wedge product of two polytopes. The wedge product is described in terms of inequality systems, in terms of vertex coordinates as well as purely combinatorially, from the corresponding data of its constituents. The wedge product construction can be described as an iterated ``subdirect product'' as introduced by McMullen (1976); it is dual to the ``wreath product'' construction of… ▽ More

A Lost Counterexample and a Problem on Illuminated Polytopes
Abstract: In a Note added in proof to a 1984 paper, Daniel A. Marcus claimed to have a counterexample to his conjecture that a minimal positively k-spanning vector configuration in R^m has size at most 2km. However, the counterexample was never published, and seems to be lost. Independently, ten years earlier, Peter Mani in 1974 solved a problem by Hadwiger, disproving that every ``illuminated'' d-dimen… ▽ More

On locally constructible spheres and balls
Abstract: Durhuus and Jonsson (1995) introduced the class of "locally constructible" (LC) 3-spheres and showed that there are only exponentially-many combinatorial types of simplicial LC 3-spheres. Such upper bounds are crucial for the convergence of models for 3D quantum gravity. We characterize the LC property for d-spheres ("the sphere minus a facet collapses to a (d-2)-complex") and for d-balls. In pa… ▽ More

Tetrahedra on deformed spheres and integral group cohomology
Abstract: We show that for every injective continuous map f: S^2 --> R^3 there are four distinct points in the image of f such that the convex hull is a tetrahedron with the property that two opposite edges have the same length and the other four edges are also of equal length. This result represents a partial result for the topological Borsuk problem for R^3. Our proof of the geometrical claim, via Fadel… ▽ More
