In this work we investigate the characteristics of the group velocity of obliquely propagating Alfvén waves in a dusty plasma typical of a stellar wind. The dispersion relation is derived with the aid of the kinetic theory for a magnetized dusty plasma consisting of electrons and ions, with distribution of momenta described by a Maxwellian function. The dust particles are considered to be immobile and have all the same size; they are electrically charged by absorption of plasma particles via inelastic collisions and by photoionization. We numerically solve the dispersion relation and calculate the components of group velocity (along and transverse to the magnetic field) for the normal modes, namely the compressional and shear Alfvén waves (CAW and SAW). The results show that the direction of the group velocity of CAWs is greatly modified with the wave-vector direction. On the other hand, SAWs will present group velocity propagating practically along the magnetic field. The changes in dust parameters, such as number density and equilibrium electrical charge, may significantly change the waves' characteristics. It is seen that for sufficiently high dust to ion number density ratio, the SAWs may present perpendicular group velocity propagating in opposite direction to the perpendicular phase velocity, in a small interval of wavenumber values; we also notice that this interval may change, or even vanish, when the flux of radiation incident on the dust is altered, changing the equilibrium electrical charge of the grains.

The characteristics of Alfvén waves propagating in a direction oblique to the ambient magnetic field in a stellar wind environment are discussed. A kinetic formulation for a magnetized dusty plasma is adopted considering Maxwellian distributions of electrons and ions, and immobile dust particles electrically charged by absorption of plasma particles and by photoionization. The dispersion relation is numerically solved and the results are compared with situations previously studied where dust particles were not charged by photoionization, which is an important process in a stellar wind of a relatively hot star. We show that the presence of dust causes the shear Alfvén waves to present a region of wavenumber values with zero frequency and that the minimum wavelength for which the mode becomes dispersive again is roughly proportional to the radiation intensity to which the dust grains are exposed. The dam** rates of both shear and compressional Alfvén waves are observed to decrease with increasing radiation flux, for the parameters considered. For the particular case where both modes present a region with null real frequency when the radiation flux is absent or weak, it is shown that when the radiation flux is sufficiently strong, the photoionization mechanism may cause this region to get smaller or even to vanish, for compressional Alfvén waves. In that case, the compressional Alfvén waves present non zero frequency for all wavenumber values, while the shear Alfvén waves still present null frequency in a certain interval of wavenumber values, which gets smaller with the presence of radiation.

The plasma emission process, which is the mechanism for solar type II and type III radio bursts phenomena, is studied by means of particle-in-cell and weak turbulence simulation methods. By plasma emission, it is meant as a loose description of a series of processes, starting from the solar flare associated electron beam exciting Langmuir and ion-acoustic turbulence, and subsequent partial conversion of beam energy into the radiation energy by nonlinear processes. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation is rigorous but the method is computationally intense, and it is difficult to diagnose the results. Numerical solution of equations of weak turbulence (WT) theory, termed WT simulation, on the other hand, is efficient and naturally lends itself to diagnostics since various terms in the equation can be turned on or off. Nevertheless, WT theory is based upon a number of assumptions. It is, therefore, desirable to compare the two methods, which is carried out for the first time in the present paper with numerical solutions of the complete set of equations of the WT theory and with two-dimensional electromagnetic PIC simulation. Upon making quantitative comparisons it is found that WT theory is largely valid, although some discrepancies are also found. The present study also indicates that it requires large computational resources in order to accurately simulate the radiation emission processes, especially for low electron beam speeds. Findings from the present paper thus imply that both methods may be useful for the study of solar radio emissions as they are complementary.

In this work, we derive a dispersion equation that describes the excitation of the oblique (or Alfvén) firehose instability in a plasma that contains both electron and ion species modelled by bi-kappa velocity distribution functions. The equation is obtained with the assumptions of low-frequency waves and moderate to large values of the parallel (respective to the ambient magnetic field) plasma beta parameter, but it is valid for any direction of propagation and for any value of the particle gyroradius (or Larmor radius). Considering values for the physical parameters typical to those found in the solar wind, some solutions of the dispersion equation, corresponding to the unstable mode, are presented. In order to implement the dispersion solver, several new mathematical properties of the special functions occurring in a kappa plasma are derived and included. The results presented here suggest that the superthermal characteristic of the distribution functions leads to reductions to both the maximum growth rate of the instability and of the spectral range of its occurrence.

Observations show that plasma particles in the solar wind frequently display power-law velocity distributions, which can be isotropic or anisotropic. Particularly, the velocity distribution functions of solar wind electrons are frequently modeled as combination of a background Maxwellian distribution and a non-thermal distribution which is known as the "halo" distribution. For fast solar wind conditions, highly anisotropic field-aligned electrons, denominated as the "strahl" distribution, are also present. Motivated by these observations, the present paper considers a tenuous plasma with Maxwellian ions, and electrons described by a summation of an isotropic Maxwellian distribution and an isotropic Kappa distribution. The formalism of weak turbulence theory is utilized in order to discuss the spectra of electrostatic waves that must be present in such a plasma, satisfying conditions of quasi-equilibrium between processes of spontaneous fluctuations and of induced emission. The kappa index and relative density of the Kappa electron distribution are varied. By taking into account effects due to electromagnetic waves into the weak turbulence formalism, we investigate the electromagnetic spectra that satisfy conditions of "turbulent equilibrium", and also the time evolution of the wave spectra and of the electron distribution, which occurs in the case of the presence of an electron beam in the electron distribution.

The distinction between the plasma dynamics dominated by collisional transport versus collective processes has never been rigorously addressed until recently. A recent paper [Yoon et al., Phys. Rev. E 93, 033203 (2016)] formulates for the first time, a unified kinetic theory in which collective processes and collisional dynamics are systematically incorporated from first principles. One of the outcomes of such a formalism is the rigorous derivation of collisional dam** rates for Langmuir and ion-acoustic waves, which can be contrasted to the heuristic customary approach. However, the results are given only in formal mathematical expressions. The present Brief Communication numerically evaluates the rigorous collisional dam** rates by considering the case of plasma particles with Maxwellian velocity distribution function so as to assess the consequence of the rigorous formalism in a quantitative manner. Comparison with the heuristic ("Spitzer") formula shows that the accurate dam** rates are much lower in magnitude than the conventional expression, which implies that the traditional approach over-estimates the importance of attenuation of plasma waves by collisional relaxation process. Such a finding may have a wide applicability ranging from laboratory to space and astrophysical plasmas.

The ubiquity of high-energy tails in the charged particle velocity distribution functions observed in space plasmas suggests the existence of an underlying process responsible for taking a fraction of the charged particle population out of thermal equilibrium and redistributing it to suprathermal velocity and energy ranges. The present Letter focuses on a new and fundamental physical explanation for the origin of suprathermal electron distribution function in a highly collisional plasma. This process involves a newly discovered electrostatic bremsstrahlung emission that is effective in a plasma in which binary collisions are present. The steady-state electron velocity distribution function dictated by such a process corresponds to a Maxwellian core plus a quasi-inverse power-law tail, which is a feature commonly observed in many space plasma environment. In order to demonstrate this, the system of self-consistent particle- and wave- kinetic equations are numerically solved with an initially Maxwellian electron velocity distribution and Langmuir wave spectral intensity, which is a state that does not reflect the presence of electrostatic bremsstrahlung process, and hence not in force balance. The electrostatic bremsstrahlung term subsequently drives the system to a new force-balanced steady state. After a long integration period it is demonstrated the initial Langmuir fluctuation spectrum is modified, which in turn distorts the initial Maxwellian electron distribution into a velocity distribution that resembles the said core-suprathermal velocity distribution. Such a mechanism may thus be operative at the coronal source region, which is characterized by high collisionality.

We study the dispersion relation for parallel propagating ion-cyclotron (IC) waves in a dusty plasma, considering situations where the velocity dispersion along perpendicular direction is greater than along the parallel direction, and considering the use of product-bi-kappa (PBK) velocity distributions for the plasma particles. The results obtained by numerical solution of the dispersion relation, in a case with isotropic Maxwellian distributions for electrons and PBK distribution for ions, show the occurrence of the electromagnetic ion-cyclotron instability (EMIC), and show that the decrease in the kappa indexes of the PBK ion distribution leads to significant increase in the magnitude of the growth rates and in the range of wavenumber for which the instability occurs. On the other hand, for anisotropic Maxwellian distribution for ions and PBK distribution for electrons, the decrease of the kappa index in the PBK electron distribution contributes to reduce the growth rate of the EMIC instability, but the reduction effect is less pronounced than the increase obtained with ion PBK distribution with the same $κ$ index. The results obtained also show that, as a general rule, the presence of a dust population contributes to reduce the instability in magnitude of the growth rates and range, but that in the case of PBK ion distribution with small kappa indexes the instability may continue to occur for dust populations which would eliminate completely the instability in the case of bi-Maxwellian ion distributions. It has also been seen that the anisotropy due to the kappa indexes in the ion PBK distribution is not so efficient in producing the EMIC instability as the ratio of perpendicular and parallel ion temperatures, for equivalent value of the effective temperature.

Velocity distribution functions (VDFs) that exhibit a power-law dependence on the high-energy tail have been the subject of intense research by the plasma physics community. Such functions, known as kappa or superthermal distributions, have been found to provide a better fitting to the VDFs measured by spacecraft in the solar wind. One of the problems that is being addressed on this new light is the temperature anisotropy of solar wind protons and electrons. In the literature, the general treatment for waves excited by (bi-)Maxwellian plasmas is well-established. However, for kappa distributions, the wave characteristics have been studied mostly for the limiting cases of purely parallel or perpendicular propagation, relative to the ambient magnetic field. Contributions to the general case of obliquely-propagating electromagnetic waves have been scarcely reported so far. The absence of a general treatment prevents a complete analysis of the wave-particle interaction in kappa plasmas, since some instabilities can operate simultaneously both in the parallel and oblique directions. In a recent work, Gaelzer and Ziebell [J. Geophys. Res. 119, 9334 (2014)] obtained expressions for the dielectric tensor and dispersion relations for the low-frequency, quasi-perpendicular dispersive Alfvén waves resulting from a kappa VDF. In the present work, the formalism introduced by Ref. 1 is generalized for the general case of electrostatic and/or electromagnetic waves propagating in a kappa plasma in any frequency range and for arbitrary angles. An isotropic distribution is considered, but the methods used here can be easily applied to more general anisotropic distributions, such as the bi-kappa or product-bi-kappa.
