We present a thorough experimental investigation on single crystals of the rare-earth based frustrated quantum antiferromagnet Pr$_3$BWO$_9$, a purported spin-liquid candidate on the breathing kagome lattice. This material possesses a disordered ground state with an unusual excitation spectrum involving a coexistence of sharp spin-waves and broad continuum excitations. Nevertheless, we show through a combination of thermodynamic, magnetometric and spectroscopic probes with detailed theoretical modeling that it should be understood in a completely different framework. The crystal field splits the lowest quasi-doublet states into two singlets moderately coupled through frustrated superexchange, resulting in a simple effective Hamiltonian of an Ising model in a transverse magnetic field. While our neutron spectroscopy data do point to significant correlations within the kagome planes, the dominant interactions are out-of-plane, forming frustrated triangular spin-tubes through two competing ferro-antiferromagnetic bonds. The resulting ground state is a simple quantum paramagnet, but with significant modifications to both thermodynamic and dynamic properties due to small perturbations to the transverse field Ising model in the form of hyperfine enhanced nuclear moments and weak structural disorder.

Magnetic, thermodynamic, neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering are used to study spin correlations in the easy-axis XXZ triangular lattice magnet K2Co(SeO3)2. Despite the presence of quasi-2D "supersolid" magnetic order, the low-energy excitation spectrum contains no sharp modes and is instead a broad and structured multi-particle continuum. Applying a weak magnetic field drives the system into an m = 1/3 fractional magnetization plateau phase and restores sharp spin wave modes. To some extent, the behavior at zero field can be understood in terms of spin wave decay. However, the presence of clear excitation minima at the M-points of the Brillouin zone suggest that the spinon language may provide a more adequate description, and signals a possible proximity to a Dirac spin liquid state.

We present a $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigation of BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$ focusing on the nearly saturated regime between $μ_0H_{c1}$ = 4.05 T and $μ_0H_{c2}$ = 6.5 T, which used to be considered a promising candidate for a spin-nematic phase. NMR spectra establish the absence of any dipolar order there, whereas the weak field dependence of the magnetization above $H_{c1}$ is accounted for by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction terms. The low-energy spin dynamics (fluctuations), measured by the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$, confirms the continuity of this phase and the absence of any low-temperature phase transition. Unexpectedly, the spin dynamics above $H_{c1}$ is largely dominated by two-magnon processes, which is expected above the saturation field of a spin-nematic phase, but not inside. This shows that BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$ is indeed close to a spin-nematic instability; however, this phase is not stabilized. We thus confirm recent theoretical predictions that the spin-nematic phase can be stabilized, at most, in an extremely narrow field range close to saturation or is rather narrowly avoided [Jiang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 116701 (2023)].

The data are analyzed, where appropriate, using extended SU (4) linear spin wave theory. A minimal magnetic Hamiltonian is proposed based on measurements in the high field polarized state. It deviates considerably from the previously considered models. Additional dilatometry experiments highlight the importance of magnetoelastic coupling in this system.

Strongly correlated spin systems can be driven to quantum critical points via various routes. In particular, gapped quantum antiferromagnets can undergo phase transitions into a magnetically ordered state with applied pressure or magnetic field, acting as tuning parameters. These transitions are characterized by $z=1$ or $z=2$ dynamical critical exponents, determined by the linear and quadratic low-energy dispersion of spin excitations, respectively. Employing high-frequency susceptibility and ultrasound techniques, we demonstrate that the tetragonal easy-plane quantum antiferromagnet NiCl$_{2}\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (aka DTN) undergoes a spin-gap closure transition at about $4.2$ kbar, resulting in a pressure-induced magnetic ordering. The studies are complemented by high-pressure-electron spin-resonance measurements confirming the proposed scenario. Powder neutron diffraction measurements revealed that no lattice distortion occurs at this pressure and the high spin symmetry is preserved, establishing DTN as a perfect platform to investigate $z=1$ quantum critical phenomena. The experimental observations are supported by DMRG calculations, allowing us to quantitatively describe the pressure-driven evolution of critical fields and spin-Hamiltonian parameters in DTN.

We report the experimental observation of dielectric relaxation by quantum critical magnons. Complex capacitance measurements reveal a dissipative feature with a temperature-dependent amplitude due to low-energy lattice excitations and an activation behavior of the relaxation time. The activation energy softens close to a field-tuned magnetic quantum critical point at $H=H_c$ and follows single-magnon energy for $H>H_c$, showing its magnetic origin. Our study demonstrates the electrical activity of coupled low-energy spin and lattice excitations, an example of quantum multiferroic behavior.

At wave vectors where inter-chain interactions cancel at the Mean Field level, they can indeed be interpreted as bound finite-width kinks in individual chains. Elsewhere in the Brillouin zone their true two-dimensional structure and propagation are revealed.

The highly-frustrated rare-earth based magnet Nd$_3$BWO$_9$ is a promising candidate in the search for proximate spin liquid physics. We present a thorough investigation on single crystals of this material using bulk and microscopic techniques. Magnetization data reveal a fractional magnetization plateau for three different investigated field directions. The magnetic phase diagram is mapped out from calorimetric data and exhibits several domes of magnetic order below 0.3 K. Propagation vectors for all ordered phases are presented. The results suggest complex ordering in this material, and unveil the existence of a commensuration transition of the propagation vector at zero magnetic field. A scenario where interplane exchange interactions are essential to a magnetic model of Nd$_3$BWO$_9$ is discussed.

In contrast to the well-known Ising spin chain case, here the SDW is stabilized by virtue of competing planar in-chain anisotropies and frustrated interchain exchange. Adjacent to the SDW phase is a broad $m = 1/3$ magnetization plateau that can be seen as a commensurate locking of the SDW state into the up-up-down (UUD) spin structure. This represents the first example of long-sought SDW-UUD transition in triangular-type quantum magnets.

The fully polarized state, the presaturation phase and the columnar-antiferromagnetic phase just bellow the presaturation phase were investigated. The observed renormalization of spin wave bandwidths, re-distribution of intensities between different branches and non-linearities in the magnetization curve are all indicative of strong deviations from classical spin wave theory. The previously observed presaturation transition is attributed to a staggered pattern of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions.

We show that introducing non-magnetic impurities into magnetized spin ladders leads to the emergence of a new characteristic length L in the otherwise scale-free Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (serving as the effective low-energy model). This results in universal LT scaling of staggered susceptibilities. Comparison of simulation results with experimental phase diagrams of prototypical spin ladder compounds DIMPY and BPCB yields excellent agreement.

We show that in either material the model falls short of providing an adequate description of the measured intensities and for RbFeCl$_{3}$ even fails to reproduce the measured dispersion relation. The most striking discrepancy is a very anisotropic azimuthal intensity distribution in the acoustic spin-wave branches in the long-wavelength limit, which is incompatible with spin-wave theory on a fundamental level. The observed anomalies are attributed to long-range dipolar interactions.

Magnetic-field-induced phase transitions are investigated in the frustrated gapped quantum paramagnet Rb$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ through dielectric and calorimetric measurements on single-crystal samples. It is clarified that the previously reported dielectric anomaly at 8~K in powder samples is not due to a chiral spin liquid state as has been suggested, but rather to a tiny amount of a ferroelectric impurity phase. Two field-induced quantum phase transitions between paraelectric and paramagnetic and ferroelectric and magnetically ordered states are clearly observed. It is shown that the electric polarization is a secondary order parameter at the lower-field (gap closure) quantum critical point but a primary one at the saturation transition. Having clearly identified the magnetic Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) nature of the latter, we use the dielectric channel to directly measure the critical divergence of BEC susceptibility. The observed power-law behavior is in very good agreement with theoretical expectations for three-dimensional BEC. Finally, dielectric data reveal magnetic presaturation phases in this compound that may feature exotic order with unconventional broken symmetries.

The deviation of the measured critical exponent from spin wave theoretical expectations are attributed to disorder. Another effect of disorder is local excitations above the magnon band. When the field is applied perpendicular to the axis of magnetic anisotropy, a new magnetic state emerges through a discontinuous transition and persists in a narrow field range just below saturation. The measured NMR spectra suggest a complex and possibly incommensurate magnetic order in that regime.

It is suggested that the presaturation phase represents spin-nematic order or other multi-magnon condensate. The phase diagrams within the long-range ordered dome are qualitatively different for each geometry. In particular, multiple transitions are identified in the field along the chain direction.

We have found an unusual competition of two frustration mechanisms in the 2D quantum antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$. The key actors are the alternation of single-ion planar anisotropy direction of the individual magnetic Co$^{2+}$ ions, and their arrangement in a distorted triangular lattice structure. In particular, the uniquely oriented Ising-type anisotropy emerges from the competition of easy-plane ones, and for a magnetic field applied along this axis one finds a cascade of five ordered phases at low temperatures. Two of these phases feature magnetization plateaux. The low-field one is supposed to be a consequence of a collinear ground state stabilized by the anisotropy, while the other plateau bears characteristics of an "up-up-down" state exclusive for lattices with triangular exchange patterns. Such coexistence of the magnetization plateaux is a fingerprint of competition between the anisotropy and the geometric frustration in Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$.

Experimental realizations of these models can be found in certain quasi one dimensional antiferromagnetc materials. Measuring the predicted scaling laws experimentally presents formidable technical challenges. In many cases it only became possible recently, thanks to qualitative progress in the development of inelastic neutron scattering techniques and to the discovery of new model compounds. The specimen is mounted on a flexible cantilever forming a force-sensing capacitor in combination with a fixed back plate. Two different cantilever designs are presented. A torsion resistant cantilever allows to measure magnetization of highly anisotropic single crystal samples. Measurements of the metal organic quantum magnets (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ (BPCB) and NiCl$_2$$\cdot$4 SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) demonstrate the device's capabilities. Routinely, a specimen's magnetic moment is measured with a resolution better than $10^{-7}$ A$\,$m$^2$ ($10^{-4}$ emu). The device in miniaturized to fit is almost any cryostat.

Motivated by the intriguing mode splittings in a magnetic field recently observed with inelastic neutron scattering in the spin ladder compound (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ (BPCB), we investigate the nature of the spin ladder excitations using DMRG and analytical arguments. Starting from the fully frustrated ladder, for which we derive the low-energy spectrum, we show that bound states are generically present close to $k=0$ in the dynamical structure factor of spin ladders above $H_{c 1}$, and that they are characterized by a field-independent binding energy and an intensity that grows with $H-H_{c 1}$. These predictions are shown to explain quantitatively the split modes observed in BPCB.

We studied electron spin resonance in a quantum magnet NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2, demonstrating a field-induced quantum phase transition from a quantum-disordered phase to an antiferromagnet. We observe two branches of the antiferromagnetic resonance of the ordered phase, one of them has a gap and the other is a Goldstone mode with zero frequency at a magnetic field along the four-fold axis. This zero frequency mode acquires a gap at a small tilting of the magnetic field with respect to this direction. The upper gap was found to be reduced in the doped compound Ni(Cl(1-x)Br(x))2-4SC(NH2)2 with $x=0.21$. This reduction is unexpected because of the previously reported rise of the main exchange constant in a doped compound. Further, a nonresonant diamagnetic susceptibility $χ^{\prime}$ was found for the ordered phase in a wide frequency range above the quasi-Goldstone mode. This dynamic diamagnetism is as large as the dynamic susceptibility of the paramagnetic resonance. We speculate that it originates from a two-magnon absorption band of low-frequency dispersive magnon branch.

Single crystal samples of the frustrated quasi one-dimensional quantum magnet Rb$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$ are investigated by magnetic, thermodynamic, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements. Quantum phase transitions between the gapped, magnetically ordered and fully saturated phases are observed. Surprisingly, the former has a distinctive three-dimensional character, while the latter is dominated by one-dimensional quantum spin fluctuations. The entire $H$-$T$ phase diagram is mapped out and found to be substantially anisotropic. In particular, the lower critical fields differ by over 50\% depending on the direction of applied field, while the upper ones are almost isotropic, as is the magnetization above saturation. The ESR spectra are strongly dependent on field orientation and point to a helical structure with a rigidly defined spin rotation plane.

Magnetization, magnetocaloric, calorimetric, neutron and X-ray diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements are performed on single crystals of BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. The low-temperature crystal structure is found to be of a lower symmetry than previously assumed. The result is a more complicated model spin Hamiltonian, which we infer from measurements of the spin wave dispersion spectrum. The main finding is a novel spin state which emerges in high magnetic fields after antiferromagnetic order is terminated at $H_{c1}\simeq 4.0$ T. It is a distinct thermodynamic phase with a well-defined phase boundary at $H_{c2}\simeq 6.5$ T and is clearly separate from the fully saturated phase. Yet, it shows no conventional (dipolar) magnetic long range order. We argue that it is fully consistent with the expectations for a quantum bond-nematic state.

By comparison to a strong coupling expansion calculation of the triplet dispersion for a spin ladder with anisotropic exchange, weakly anisotropic leg interactions are identified as the dominant source of magnetic anisotropy in BPCB. Based on these results, we discuss the nature of magnetic exchange anisotropy in BPCB and in related transition-metal insulators.

The frequency of a particular optical phonon, the so-called pantograph mode, shows a very strong anomalous temperature dependence below about 40 K. We link the magnitude of the effect to the magnetic exchange energy on the dimer bonds in the Sutherland-Shastry spin lattice in this material. The corresponding dimer spin correlations are quantitatively estimated and found to be strongly pressure dependent. At around P$_2\sim$22 kbar they switch from antiferromagnetic to being predominantly ferromagnetic.

Formation of the clusters with non-zero net magnetization is confirmed; the cluster-cluster interaction is evidenced by the concentration dependence of ESR absorption. High-temperature spin-relaxation time was found to increase with non-magnetic dilution. The ESR linewidth analysis proves that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction remains the dominant spin-relaxation channel in diluted DIMPY. Experimental data indicate that the dilution results in the weakening of the effective DM interaction, which can be interpreted as total suppression of DM interaction in the close vicinity of impurity atom.

Inelastic neutron experiments for $x=0$, $x=0.3$, and $x=1$ demonstrate that the magnetic anisotropy and spin interactions are continuously tuned by the chemical composition. For the intermediate concentration all magnetic excitations are substantial broadened suggesting that disorder plays a key role in this species. For the two end-compounds, excitations remain sharp.

We report the magnetic and calorimetric measurements in single crystal samples of the square lattice $J_{1}-J_{2}$ quantum antiferromagnet BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. An investigation of the scaling of magnetization reveals a "dimensionality reduction" indicative of a strong degree of geometric frustration. Below a characteristic temperature of $T^{\ast}\simeq150$~mK we observe the emergence of an additional strongly fluctuating quantum phase close to full magnetic saturation. It is separated from the magnetically ordered state by first- and second-order phase transitions, depending on the orientation of the applied magnetic field. We suggest that this phase may indeed be related to the theoretically predicted spin-nematic state.

We observe universal finite-temperature scaling of the transverse local dynamic structure factor in spectacular quantitative agreement with long-standing theoretical predictions. At the same time, already at rather low temperatures, we observe strong non-universal longitudinal fluctuations. To separate the two, we make use of an intrinsic leg-exchange symmetry of the spin ladder. Complementary measurements of specific heat also reveal striking scaling behavior near the quantum critical point.

By means of torque magnetometry we investigate the phase diagram evolution as the magnetic field undergoes rotation in $\mathbf{ba}^{\ast}$ and $\mathbf{bc}$ planes. The key finding is the robustness of the high field spin density wave-like phase, which may persist even as the external field goes orthogonal to the chain direction $\mathbf{b}$. In contrast, the intermediate collinear antiferromagnetic phase collapses at moderate deflection angles with respect to $\mathbf{b}$ axis.

Drastically different critical indexes and correlation lengths in the high field phase are found for two different orientations of the applied field. It is argued that for a field applied along the crystallographic c axis, as in previous studies [1], the transition is best described as an Ising transition in random field and anisotropy, rather than as a magnetic Bose Glass to Bose Condensate transition.

Abstract:
We report spontaneous appearance of antiferromagnetic order in a model gapped quantum paramagnet Ni(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ induced by a change in bromine concentration x. This transition is qualitatively similar to a z = 1 magnetic quantum critical point. However, the observed critical scaling of thermodynamic and magnetic properties has rather unusual critical exponents.

Inelastic neutron-scattering and finite-temperature density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations are used to investigate the spin excitation spectrum of the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg spin chain compound K$_2$CuSO$_4$Cl$_2$ at several temperatures in a magnetic field near saturation. Critical correlations characteristic of the predicted $z=2$, $d=1$ quantum phase transition occurring at saturation are shown to be consistent with the observed neutron spectra. The data is well described with a scaling function computed using a free fermion description of the spins, valid close to saturation, and the corresponding scaling limits. One of the most prominent non-universal spectral features of the data is a novel thermally activated longitudinal mode that remains underdamped across most of the Brillouin zone.

Magnetic and lattice excitations in the quantum antiferromagnet (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$Cl$_6$ (PHCC) are studied across two pressure-induced phase transition at $P_c=4.3~\mathrm{kbar}$ and $P_1=13.4~\mathrm{kbar}$ using Raman spectroscopy. It is confirmed that neither transition is a result of a structural transformation. Magnetic scattering is detected. It shows a pronounced pressure dependence and undergoes substantial changes at both transitions. The results are in clear contradiction with previous neutron studies, which detected only minor changes of the magnon spectrum at $P_1$. A number of phonons show anomalous frequency shifts at low temperatures. This effect is pressure dependent and for two of the observed phonons dramatically reverses sign at around $P_1$. The anomalous behavior is attributed to strong magnetoelastic coupling in PHCC.

We compare theoretical results for electron spin resonance (ESR) properties of the Heisenberg-Ising Hamiltonian with ESR experiments on the quasi-one-dimensional magnet Cu(py)$_2$Br$_2$ (CPB). Our measurements were performed over a wide frequency and temperature range giving insight into spin dynamics, spin structure, and magnetic anisotropy of this compound. By analyzing the angular dependence of ESR parameters (resonance shift and linewidth) at room temperature we show that the two weakly coupled inequivalent spin chain types inside the compound are well described by Heisenberg-Ising chains with their magnetic anisotropy axes perpendicular to the chain direction and almost perpendicular to each other. We further determine the full $g$-tensor from these data. In addition, the angular dependence of the linewidth at high temperatures gives us access to the exponent of the algebraic decay of a dynamical correlation function of the isotropic Heisenberg chain. From the temperature dependence of static susceptibilities we extract the strength of the exchange coupling ($J/k_B = 52.0\,\text{K}$) and the anisotropy parameter ($δ\approx -0.02$) of the model Hamiltonian. An independent compatible value of $δ$ is obtained by comparing the exact prediction for the resonance shift at low temperatures with high-frequency ESR data recorded at $4\,\text{K}$. The spin structure in the ordered state implied by the two (almost) perpendicular anisotropy axes is in accordance with the propagation vector determined from neutron scattering experiments. In addition to undoped samples we study the impact of partial substitution of Br by Cl ions on spin dynamics. From the dependence of the ESR linewidth on do** level we infer an effective decoupling of the anisotropic component $Jδ$ from the isotropic exchange $J$ in these systems.

We report a novel crossover behavior in the long-range-ordered phase of a prototypical spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder compound $\mathrm{(C_7H_{10}N)_2CuBr_4}$. The staggered order was previously evidenced from a continuous and symmetric splitting of $^{14}$N NMR spectral lines on lowering temperature below $T_c\simeq 330$ mK, with a saturation towards $\simeq 150$ mK. Unexpectedly, the split lines begin to further separate away below $T^*\sim 100$ mK while the line width and shape remain completely invariable. This crossover behavior is further corroborated by the NMR relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ measurements. A very strong suppression reflecting the ordering, $T_1^{-1}\sim T^{5.5}$, observed above $T^*$, is replaced by $T_1^{-1}\sim T$ below $T^*$. These original NMR features are indicative of unconventional nature of the crossover, which may arise from a unique arrangement of the ladders into a spatially anisotropic and frustrated coupling network.

Abstract:
The low energy magnetic excitation spectrum of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic $S = 1/2$ chain system Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ with Ni- and Ca-impurities is studied by neutron spectroscopy. In all cases, a defect-induced spectral pseudogap is observed and shown to scale proportionately to the number of scattering centers in the spin chains.

As for the pure system (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$Cl$_6$, pressure allows PHCX with small levels of disorder ($x\leq 7.5\%$) to be driven through a quantum critical point separating a low-pressure quantum paramagnetic phase from magnetic order at high pressures. However, the pressure-induced ordered state is highly inhomogeneous for disorder concentrations $x>1\%$. This behavior might be related to the formation of a quantum Griffiths phase above a critical disorder concentration $7.5\%<x_{\rm c}<15\%$. Br-substitution increases the critical pressure and suppresses critical temperatures and ordered moment sizes.

We present two methods to determine whether the interactions in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) state of a spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder are attractive or repulsive. The first method combines two bulk measurements, of magnetization and specific heat, to deduce the TLL parameter that distinguishes between the attraction and repulsion. The second one is based on a local-probe, NMR measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation. For the strong-leg spin ladder compound $\mathrm{(C_7H_{10}N)_2CuBr_4}$ we find that the isothermal magnetic field dependence of the relaxation rate, $T_1^{-1}(H)$, displays a concave curve between the two critical fields that bound the TLL regime. This is in sharp contrast to the convex curve previously reported for a strong-rung ladder $\mathrm{(C_5H_{12}N)_2CuBr_4}$. Within the TLL description, we show that the concavity directly reflects the attractive interactions, while the convexity reflects the repulsive ones.
