We show that the collective effect of $N$ rigid bodies $(\mathcal{S}_{n,N})_{n=1}^N$ of diameters $(r_{n,N})_{n=1}^N$ immersed in an incompressible non--Newtonian fluid is negligible in the asymptotic limit $N \to \infty$ as long as their total packing volume $\sum_{n=1}^N r_{n,N}^d$, $d=2,3$ tends to zero exponentially -- $\sum_{n=1}^N r_{n,N}^d \approx A^{-N}$ -- for a certain constant $A > 1$.…

The result is rather surprising and in a sharp contrast with the associated homogenization problem, where the same number of obstacles can completely stop the fluid motion in the case of shear thickening viscosity. A large class of non--Newtonian fluids is included, for which the viscous stress is a subdifferential of a convex potential.

This paper analytically explores a simplified model for the hydrodynamics of nematic liquid crystal colloids. We integrate a Stokes equation for the velocity field with a Ginzburg-Landau transported heat flow for the director field. The study focuses on a bounded spatial domain containing periodically distributed colloidal particles, which impose no-anchoring conditions on the nematic liquid crystal. By progressively reducing the particle size to zero and simultaneously increasing the number of particles, we delve into the associated homogenisation problem. Our analysis uncovers a form of decoupling where the velocity field asymptotically satisfies a Darcy equation, independent of the director, while the director follows a gradient flow, unaffected by the velocity field. One of the most intricate aspects of the homogenisation process is the absence of an extension operator for the director field that preserves the uniform estimates related to the system's energy. We address this challenge with a novel variation of the Aubin-Lions lemma, specifically adapted for homogenisation problems.

Rational computer-aided design of multiphase polymer materials is vital for rapid progress in many important applications, such as: diagnostic tests, drug delivery, coatings, additives for constructing materials, cosmetics, etc. Several property predictive models, including the prospective Population Balance Model for Latex Particles Morphology Formation (LPMF PBM), have already been developed for such materials. However, they lack computational efficiency, and the accurate prediction of materials' properties still remains a great challenge. To enhance performance of the LPMF PBM, we explore the feasibility of reducing its complexity through disregard of the aggregation terms of the model. The introduced nondimensionalization approach, which we call Optimal Scaling with Constraints, suggests a quantitative criterion for locating regions of slow and fast aggregation and helps to derive a family of dimensionless LPMF PBM of reduced complexity. The mathematical analysis of this new family is also provided. When compared with the original LPMF PBM, the resulting models demonstrate several orders of magnitude better computational efficiency.

In this state, the nematic order is induced by the boundary conditions in a narrow band around each particle and it decays exponentially in the bulk.
We develop rigorous asymptotics of the linearization of the appropriate variational model that allow us to describe weak far-field interactions between the colloidal particles in two dimensional paranematic suspensions. We demonstrate analytically that decay rates of solutions to the full nonlinear and linear problems are similar and verify numerically that the interactions between the particles in these problems have similar dependence on the distance between the particles. Finally, we perform Monte-Carlo simulations for a system of colloidal particles in a paranematic and describe the statistical properties of this system.

The paper concerns the analysis of global minimizers of a Dirichlet-type energy functional defined on the space of vector fields $H^1(S,T)$, where $S$ and $T$ are surfaces of revolution. The energy functional we consider is closely related to a reduced model in the variational theory of micromagnetism for the analysis of observable magnetization states in curved thin films. We show that axially symmetric minimizers always exist, and if the target surface $T$ is never flat, then any coexisting minimizer must have line symmetry. Thus, the minimization problem reduces to the computation of an optimal one-dimensional profile. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for energy minimizers to be axially symmetric.

In this paper we study probabilistic and neural network approximations for solutions to Poisson equation subject to H\" older data in general bounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^d$. We aim at two fundamental goals.
The first, and the most important, we show that the solution to Poisson equation can be numerically approximated in the sup-norm by Monte Carlo methods, { and that this can be done highly efficiently if we use a modified version} of the walk on spheres algorithm { as an acceleration method. This provides estimates which are efficient with respect to the prescribed approximation error and with polynomial complexity in the dimension and the reciprocal of the error.} {A crucial feature is that} the overall number of samples does not not depend on the point at which the approximation is performed.
As a second goal, we show that the obtained Monte Carlo solver renders { in a constructive way} ReLU deep neural network (DNN) solutions to Poisson problem, whose sizes depend at most polynomialy in the dimension $d$ and in the desired error. In fact we show that the random DNN provides with high probability a small approximation error and low polynomial complexity in the dimension.

Assuming the object is a ball of a small radius $\varepsilon$ we show that the behavior of the fluid is not influenced by the object in the asymptotic limit $\varepsilon \to 0$. The result holds for the isentropic pressure law $p(\varrho) = a \varrho^γ$ for any $γ> \frac{3}{2}$ under mild assumptions concerning the rigid body density. In particular, the latter may be bounded as soon as $γ> 3$.
The proof uses a new method of construction of the test functions in the weak formulation of the problem, and, in particular, a new form of the so-called Bogovskii operator.

In this paper we further investigate the structure of $Q_{\varepsilon}$ near the core of a point defect $x_0$ which is a singular point of the map $n_*$. The main strategy is to study the blow-up profile of $Q_{\varepsilon_n}(x_n+\varepsilon_n y)$ where $\{x_n\}$ are carefully chosen and converge to $x_0$. We prove that $Q_{\varepsilon_n}(x_n+\varepsilon_n y)$ converges in $C^2_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to a tangent map $Q(x)$ which at infinity behaves like a "hedgehog" solution that coincides with the asymptotic profile of $n_*$ near $x_0$. Moreover, such convergence result implies that the minimizer $Q_{\varepsilon_n}$ can be well approximated by the Oseen-Frank minimizer $n_*$ outside the $O(\varepsilon_n)$ neighborhood of the point defect.

The specific feature of our systems are potentials having a finite number of global minima, with sub-quadratic behaviour locally near their minima. The corresponding formal Euler-Lagrange equations are supplemented with free boundaries. We do not study regularity issues but focus on qualitative aspects. We show the existence of entire solutions in an equivariant setting connecting the minima of $ W $ at infinity, thus modeling many coexisting phases, possessing free boundaries and minimizing energy in the symmetry class. We also present a very modest result of existence of free boundaries under no symmetry hypotheses. The existence of a free boundary can be related to the existence of a specific sub-quadratic feature, a dead core, whose size is also quantified.

In modelling of chemical, physical or biological systems it may occur that the coefficients, multiplying various terms in the equation of interest, differ greatly in magnitude, if a particular system of units is used. Such is, for instance, the case of the Population Balance Equations (PBE) proposed to model the Latex Particles Morphology formation. The obvious way out of this difficulty is the use of dimensionless scaled quantities, although often the scaling procedure is not unique. In this paper, we introduce a conceptually new general approach, called Optimal Scaling (OS). The method is tested on the known examples from classical and quantum mechanics, and applied to the Latex Particles Morphology model, where it allows us to reduce the variation of the relevant coefficients from 49 to just 4 orders of magnitudes. The PBE are then solved by a novel Generalised Method Of Characteristics, and the OS is shown to help reduce numerical error, and avoid unphysical behaviour of the solution. Although inspired by a particular application, the proposed scaling algorithm is expected find application in a wide range of chemical, physical and biological problems.

Abstract:
In this paper we study a limit connecting a scaled wave map with the heat flow into the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$. We show quantitatively how that the two equations are connected by means of an initial layer correction. This limit is motivated as a first step into understanding the limit of zero inertia for the hyperbolic-parabolic Ericksen-Leslie's liquid crystal model.

For a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^m, m\geq 2,$ of class $C^0$, the properties are studied of fields of `good directions', that is the directions with respect to which $\partialΩ$ can be locally represented as the graph of a continuous function. For any such domain there is a canonical smooth field of good directions defined in a suitable neighbourhood of $\partialΩ$, in terms of which a corresponding flow can be defined. Using this flow it is shown that $Ω$ can be approximated from the inside and the outside by diffeomorphic domains of class $C^\infty$. Whether or not the image of a general continuous field of good directions (pseudonormals) defined on $\partialΩ$ is the whole of $\mathbb{S}^{m-1}$ is shown to depend on the topology of $Ω$. These considerations are used to prove that if $m=2,3$, or if $Ω$ has nonzero Euler characteristic, there is a point $P\in\partialΩ$ in the neighbourhood of which $\partialΩ$ is Lipschitz. The results provide new information even for more regular domains, with Lipschitz or smooth boundaries.

In this paper we prove the existence of global in time weak solutions for an evolutionary PDE system modelling nonisothermal Landau-de Gennes nematic liquid crystal (LC) flows in three dimensions of space. In our model, the incompressible Navier-Stokes system for the macroscopic velocity $\vu$ is coupled to a nonlinear convective parabolic equation describing the evolution of the Q-tensor $\QQ$, namely a tensor-valued variable representing the normalized second order moments of the probability distribution function of the LC molecules. The effects of the (absolute) temperature $\vt$ are prescribed in the form of an energy balance identity complemented with a global entropy production inequality. Compared to previous contributions, we can consider here the physically realistic singular configuration potential $f$ introduced by Ball and Majumdar. This potential gives rise to severe mathematical difficulties since it introduces, in the Q-tensor equation, a term which is at the same time singular in $\QQ$ and degenerate in $\vt$. To treat it a careful analysis of the properties of $f$, particularly of its blow-up rate, is carried out.

We address questions of global existence and stability in bounded domains with no-slip boundary conditions. Even in two space dimensions, global existence is open in general, and remains so, primarily due to the lack of a self-contained $L^2$ energy estimate. However, through use of new $H^1$ coercivity estimates for the linear equations, we establish a number of global existence and stability results, including results for small divergence and a time-discrete scheme. This symmetry is preserved in the constrained Landau-de Gennes theory that works with the tensor $Q=s\big(n\otimes n- \frac{1}{3} Id\big)$.We study the differences and the overlaps between the two theories. These depend on the regularity class used as well as on the topology of the underlying domain. We show that for simply-connected domains and in the natural energy class $W^{1,2}$ the two theories coincide, but otherwise there can be differences between the two theories, which we identify. In the case of planar domains we completely characterise the instances in which the predictions of the constrained Landau-de Gennes theory differ from those of the Oseen-Frank theory.

The fluid is described by a system that couples a forced Navier-Stokes system with a parabolic-type system. In our previous work, \cite{pz1}, we assumed that a certain parameter, $ξ$, is zero, which had the effect of cancelling certain terms. In the current work we do not make this assumption and study the full system, observing that the presence of these additional terms has a non-trivial effect, namely the quadruply exponential increase of the high norms. We also estimate differently certain terms already existent in the simplified system and improve the estimates in \cite{pz1}. We prove the existence of global weak solutions in dimensions two and three. In dimension two we prove the higher regularity of solutions and show that the high norms increase in time at most quadruply exponential. We also show the weak-strong uniqueness in dimension two.

We study global minimizers of a continuum Landau-De Gennes energy functional for nematic liquid crystals, in three-dimensional domains, subject to uniaxial boundary conditions. We analyze the physically relevant limit of small elastic constant and show that global minimizers converge strongly, in $W^{1,2}$, to a global minimizer predicted by the Oseen-Frank theory for uniaxial nematic liquid crystals with constant order parameter. Moreover, the convergence is uniform in the interior of the domain, away from the singularities of the limiting Oseen-Frank global minimizer. We obtain results on the rate of convergence of the eigenvalues and the regularity of the eigenvectors of the Landau-De Gennes global minimizer.
We also study the interplay between biaxiality and uniaxiality in Landau-De Gennes global energy minimizers and obtain estimates for various related quantities such as the biaxiality parameter and the size of admissible strongly biaxial regions.
