Parity of the coefficients of certain eta-quotients, III: The case of pure eta-powers
Abstract: We continue a program of investigating the parity of the coefficients of eta-quotients, with the goal of elucidating the parity of the partition function. In this paper, we consider positive integer powers $t$ of the Dedekind eta-function. Previous work and conjectures suggest that arithmetic progressions in which the Fourier coefficients of these functions are even should be numerous. We explicit… ▽ More

Renormalization of Higher Currents of the sine-Gordon Model in pAQFT
Abstract: In this paper we show that the higher currents of the sine-Gordon model are super-renormalizable by power counting in the framework of pAQFT. First we obtain closed recursive formulas for the higher currents in the classical theory and introduce a suitable notion of degree for their components. We then move to the pAQFT setting and, by means of some technical results, we compute explicit formulas… ▽ More

Parity of the coefficients of certain eta-quotients, II: The case of even-regular partitions
Abstract: We continue our study of the density of the odd values of eta-quotients, here focusing on the $m$-regular partition functions $b_m$ for $m$ even. Based on extensive computational evidence, we propose an elegant conjecture which, in particular, completely classifies such densities: Let $m = 2^j m_0$ with $m_0$ odd. If $2^j < m_0$, then the odd density of $b_m$ is $1/2$; moreover, such density is eq… ▽ More

On the number of even values of an eta-quotient
Abstract: The goal of this note is to provide a general lower bound on the number of even values of the Fourier coefficients of an arbitrary eta-quotient $F$, over any arithmetic progression. Namely, if $g_{a,b}(x)$ denotes the number of even coefficients of $F$ in degrees $n\equiv b$ (mod $a$) such that $n\le x$, then we show that $g_{a,b}(x) / \sqrt{x}$ is unbounded for $x$ large. Log-concavity of level Hilbert functions and pure $O$-sequences
Abstract: We investigate log-concavity in the context of level Hilbert functions and pure $O$-sequences, two classes of numerical sequences introduced by Stanley in the late Seventies whose structural properties have since been the object of a remarkable amount of interest in combinatorial commutative algebra. Deducing the positive odd density of $p(n)$ from that of a multipartition function: An unconditional proof
Abstract: A famous conjecture of Parkin-Shanks predicts that $p(n)$ is odd with density $1/2$. Despite the remarkable amount of work of the last several decades, however, even showing this density is positive seems out of reach. In a 2018 paper with Judge, we introduced a different approach and conjectured the "striking" fact that, if for any $A \equiv \pm 1\ (\bmod 6)$ the multipartition function $p_A(n)$… ▽ More

On the shape of a pure O-sequence
Abstract: An order ideal is a finite poset X of (monic) monomials such that, whenever M is in X and N divides M, then N is in X. If all, say t, maximal monomials of X have the same degree, then X is pure (of type t). A pure O-sequence is the vector, h=(1,h_1,...,h_e), counting the monomials of X in each degree. Equivalently, in the language of commutative algebra, pure O-sequences are the h-vectors of monom… ▽ More

Monomial Complete Intersections, The Weak Lefschetz Property and Plane Partitions
Abstract: We characterize the monomial complete intersections in three variables satisfying the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP), as a function of the characteristic of the base field. Our result presents a surprising, and still combinatorially obscure, connection with the enumeration of plane partitions. It turns out that the rational primes p dividing the number, M(a,b,c), of plane partitions contained insid… ▽ More

Some algebraic consequences of Green's hyperplane restriction theorems
Abstract: We discuss a paper of M. Green from a new algebraic perspective, and provide applications of its results to level and Gorenstein algebras, concerning their Hilbert functions and the weak Lefschetz property. In particular, we will determine a new infinite class of symmetric $h$-vectors that cannot be Gorenstein $h$-vectors, which was left open in a recent work of Migliore-Nagel-Zanello. This incl… ▽ More

Forcing the Strong Lefschetz and the Maximal Rank Properties
Abstract: Three basic properties that standard graded artinian $k$-algebras may or may not enjoy are the Weak and Strong Lefschetz Properties and the Maximal Rank Property (respectively WLP, SLP, and MRP). In this paper we will assume that the base field $k$ has characteristic zero. It is known that SLP implies MRP, which in turn implies WLP, but that both implications are strict. However, it surprising… ▽ More

The strength of the Weak Lefschetz Property
Abstract: We study a number of conditions on the Hilbert function of a level artinian algebra which imply the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). Possibly the most important open case is whether a codimension 3 SI-sequence forces the WLP for level algebras. In other words, does every codimension 3 Gorenstein algebra have the WLP? We give some new partial answers to this old question: we prove an affirmative an… ▽ More

Bounds and asymptotic minimal growth for Gorenstein Hilbert functions
Abstract: We determine new bounds on the entries of Gorenstein Hilbert functions, both in any fixed codimension and asymptotically. Our first main theorem is a lower bound for the degree $i+1$ entry of a Gorenstein $h$-vector, in terms of its entry in degree $i$. This result carries interesting applications concerning unimodality: indeed, an important consequence is that, given $r$ and $i$, all Gorenste… ▽ More

Simplicial complexes and Macaulay's inverse systems
Abstract: Let $Δ$ be a simplicial complex on $V = \{x_1,...,x_n\}$, with Stanley-Reisner ideal $I_Δ\subseteq R = k[x_1,...,x_n]$. The goal of this paper is to investigate the class of artinian algebras $A=A(Δ,a_1,...,a_n)= R/(I_Δ,x_1^{a_1},...,x_n^{a_n})$, where each $a_i \geq 2$. By utilizing the technique of Macaulay's inverse systems, we can explicitly describe the socle of $A$ in terms of $Δ$. As a co… ▽ More

Interval Conjectures for level Hilbert functions
Abstract: We conjecture that the set of all Hilbert functions of (artinian) level algebras enjoys a very natural form of regularity, which we call the {\em Interval Conjecture} (IC): If, for some positive integer $α$, $(1,h_1,...,h_i,...,h_e)$ and $(1,h_1,...,h_i+α,...,h_e)$ are both level $h$-vectors, then $(1,h_1,...,h_i+β,...,h_e)$ is also level for each integer $β=0,1,..., α.$ In the Gorenstein case,… ▽ More

Abstract: In this note we establish a (non-trivial) lower bound on the degree two entry $h_2$ of a Gorenstein $h$-vector of any given socle degree $e$ and any codimension $r$. In particular, when $e=4$, that is for Gorenstein $h$-vectors of the form $h=(1,r,h_2,r,1)$, our lower bound allows us to prove a conjecture of Stanley on the order of magnitude of the minimum value, say $f(r)$, that $h_2$ may ass… ▽ More

The Hilbert functions which force the Weak Lefschetz Property
Abstract: The purpose of this note is to characterize the finite Hilbert functions which force all of their artinian algebras to enjoy the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). Curiously, they turn out to be exactly those (characterized by Wiebe in $[Wi]$) whose Gotzmann ideals have the WLP. This implies that, if a Gotzmann ideal has the WLP, then all algebras with the same Hilbert function (and hence lower Be… ▽ More

An improved Multiplicity Conjecture for codimension three Gorenstein algebras
Abstract: The Multiplicity Conjecture is a deep problem relating the multiplicity (or degree) of a Cohen-Macaulay standard graded algebra with certain extremal graded Betti numbers in its minimal free resolution. In the case of level algebras of codimension three, Zanello has proposed a stronger conjecture. We prove this conjecture for the case of codimension three graded Gorenstein algebras.

Abstract: The Multiplicity Conjecture (MC) of Huneke and Srinivasan provides upper and lower bounds for the multiplicity of a Cohen-Macaulay algebra $A$ in terms of the shifts appearing in the modules of the minimal free resolution (MFR) of $A$. All the examples studied so far have lead to conjecture (see $[HZ]$ and $[MNR2]$) that, moreover, the bounds of the MC are sharp if and only if $A$ has a pure MFR… ▽ More

First we exhibit a new class of socle-vectors $s$ which admit a GCA (whose $h$-vector is lower than the upper-bound $H$ of Theorem A of the previous paper). In particular, it follows that for every socle-vector $s$ of type 2 there exists a GCA (in any codimension $r$). The main result of this paper is… ▽ More
