The findings discussed in "Apparent Horizons of the Thakurta Spacetime and the Description of Cosmological Black Holes" deviate from prior research, particularly our study in Phys. Rev. We clarify this inconsistency, which arises from employing a coordinate transformation covering a distinct region of spacetime -- specifically one considered inaccessible due to its location beyond a singularity, making it unreachable from infinity. Additionally, we provide a concrete example where the distinct horizons and spacetime regions are readily discernible.

A rotating version of the electrically charged solution of the Einstein-Maxwell system of equations modeling static regular black holes by Lemos and Zanchin [Phys. Rev. D 83, 124005 (2011)] is obtained in the present work. The full rotating geometry consists of the Kerr-Newman exterior geometry outside a rotating de Sitter-type core with an electrically charged spheroidal shell at the boundary. To achieve this interior geometry, we utilize the Gürses-Gürsey metric and employ the Newman-Janis algorithm to generate the rotating version of the static solution. The metrics of the two spacetime regions are smoothly matched together at the rotating electrically charged shell, while the electromagnetic field satisfies the usual boundary conditions at a charged surface. Interestingly, we note that, although the Newman-Janis procedure preserves the overall electric charge of the static solution, the arbitrariness of the algorithm allows us to propose different electromagnetic fields and charge (current) distributions for the same geometry of the interior region, together with different charge (current) densities on the rotating boundary shell. For a particular choice of the interior electromagnetic field, we show that it is possible to interpret the rotating de Sitter fluid as being electrically polarized due to its rotation, despite the absence of net electric charge within the interior region, which is instead concentrated solely on the charged shell. The properties of the entire rotating solution, such as curvature regularity, energy-momentum tensor and energy conditions, are thoroughly examined in the text, revealing various types of charged rotating objects.

Charged static and rotating objects as solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell field equations are obtained and studied in the present work. The full spacetime geometry is obtained by matching two spacetime regions, an interior region containing electrified matter and an exterior electrovacuum region. In the static case, the interior region contains a spherically symmetric distribution of matter constituted by a de Sitter-type perfect fluid with electric charge, whose energy density profile is given by a Tolman-like relation. The interior solution is smoothly matched with the exterior Reissner-Nordström electrovacuum solution, thus producing different kinds of objects, such as charged regular black holes and overcharged tension stars, that we analyze in detail. We also investigate the connection between the present static solution and the regular black holes with a de Sitter core presented in the work by Lemos and Zanchin [Phys. Rev. D 83, 124005 (2011)]. We then employ the Gürses-Gürsey metric and apply the Newman-Janis algorithm to construct a charged rotating interior geometry from the static interior solution. The resulting interior metric and the electromagnetic field are smoothly matched to the exterior Kerr-Newman electrovacuum solution, thus producing a regular interior for the exterior Kerr-Newman geometry. The main properties of the complete rotating solution are analyzed in detail, showing that different kinds of rotating objects, such as charged rotating black holes and other charged rotating objects, also emerge in this solution.

The motion of water is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, which are complemented by the continuity equation to ensure local mass conservation. In this work, we construct the relativistic generalization of these equations through a gradient expansion for a fluid with conserved charge in a curved $d$-dimensional spacetime. We adopt a general hydrodynamic frame approach and introduce the Irreducible-Structure (IS) algorithm, which is based on derivatives of both the expansion scalar and the shear and vorticity tensors. By this method, we systematically generate all permissible gradients up to a specified order and derive the most comprehensive constitutive relations for a charged fluid, accurate to third-order gradients. These constitutive relations are formulated to apply to ordinary, non-conformal, and conformally invariant charged fluids. Furthermore, we examine the hydrodynamic frame dependence of the transport coefficients for a non-conformal charged fluid up to the third order in the gradient expansion. The frame dependence of the scalar, vector, and tensor parts of the constitutive relations is obtained in terms of the field redefinitions of the fundamental hydrodynamic variables. Managing these frame dependencies is challenging due to their non-linear character. However, in the linear regime, these higher-order transformations become tractable, enabling the identification of a set of frame-invariant coefficients. An advantage of employing these coefficients is the possibility of studying the linear equations of motion in any chosen frame and, hence, we apply this approach to the Landau frame. Subsequently, these linear equations are solved in momentum space, yielding dispersion relations for shear, sound, and diffusive modes for a non-conformal charged fluid, expressed in terms of the frame-invariant transport coefficients.

We perform a systematic study of rotating charged fluids, and extend several well known theorems regarding static Weyl-type systems which were recently compiled by Lemos and Zanchin [Phys. Rev. D 80, 024010 (2009)] to rotating and axisymmetric systems. Static Weyl-type systems are composed by static charged fluid configurations obeying the Newton-Maxwell or the Einstein-Maxwell systems of equations in which the electric potential $φ$ and the timelike metric potential $g_{tt}\equiv - W^ 2$ satisfy the Weyl hypothesis, i.e., $W=W(φ)$. In the present analysis, both the Newton-Maxwell and Einstein-Maxwell theories that describe non-relativistic and relativistic systems, respectively, are used to perform a detailed analysis of the general properties of rotating charged fluids rotating charged dust as well as rotating charged fluids with pressure in four-dimensional spacetimes. In comparison to the static (nonrotating) systems, two additional potentials, a metric potential related to rotation and an electromagnetic potential related to the magnetic field, come into play for rotating systems. In each case, constraints between the fluid quantities and the metric and electromagnetic potentials are identified in order to generalize the theorems holding for static charged systems to rotating charged systems. New theorems regarding equilibrium configurations with differential rotation in both the Newtonian and the relativistic theories are stated and proved. For rigidly rotating charged fluids in the Einstein-Maxwell theory, a new ansatz involving the gradient of the metric potentials and the gradient of the electromagnetic potentials is considered in order to prove new theorems. Such an ansatz leads to new constraints between the fluid quantities and field potentials, so implying new equations of state for the charged fluids.

Among these spheres there are regular stars, overcharged tension stars, regular black holes, quasiblack holes, and quasinonblack holes, all of which have a Reissner-Nordström exterior. We formulate the dynamical perturbed equations by following the Chandrasekhar approach and investigate the stability against radial perturbations through numerical methods. It is found that (i) under certain conditions that depend on the adiabatic index of the radial perturbation, there are stable charged stars and stable tension stars; (ii) also depending on the adiabatic index there are stable regular black holes; (iii) quasiblack hole configurations formed by, e.g., charging regular pressure stars or by discharging regular tension stars, can be stable against radial perturbations for reasonable values of the adiabatic index; (iv) quasinonblack holes are unstable against radial perturbations.

We revisit the problem of calculating the quasinormal modes of spin $0$, $1/2$, $1$, $3/2$, $2$, and spin $5/2$ fields in the asymptotically flat Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. Our aim is to investigate the problem from the numerical point of view, by comparing some numerical methods available in the literature and still not applied for solving the eigenvalue problems arising from the perturbation equations in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. We focus on the pseudo-spectral and the asymptotic iteration methods. These numerical methods are tested against the available results in the literature, and confronting the precision between each other. Besides testing the different numerical methods, we calculate higher overtones quasinormal frequencies for all the investigated perturbation fields in comparison with the known results. In particular, we obtain purely imaginary frequencies for spin $1/2$ and $3/2$ fields that are in agreement with analytic results reported previously in the literature. The purely imaginary frequencies for the spin $1/2$ field are exactly the same as the frequencies obtained for the spin $3/2$ field. In turn, the quasinormal frequencies for the spin $5/2$ perturbation field are calculated for the very first time, and purely imaginary frequencies are found also in this case. We conclude that both methods provide accurate results and they complement each other.

We obtain a new class of stationary axisymmetric spacetimes by using the Gürses-Gürsey metric with an appropriate mass function in order to generate a rotating core of matter that may be smoothly matched to the exterior Kerr metric. The same stationary spacetimes may be obtained by applying a slightly modified version of the Newman-Janis algorithm to a nonrotating spherically symmetric seed metric. The starting spherically symmetric configuration represents a nonisotropic de-Sitter type fluid whose radial pressure $p_r$ satisfies an state equation of the form $p_r=-ρ$, where the energy density $ρ$ is chosen to be the Tolman type-VII energy density [R. C. Tolman, Phys. Rev. {\bf 55}, 364 (1939)]. The resulting rotating metric is then smoothly matched to the exterior Kerr metric, and the main properties of the obtained geometries are investigated. All the solutions considered in the present study are regular in the sense they are free of curvature singularities. Depending on the relative values of the total mass $m$ and rotation parameter $a$, the resulting stationary spacetimes represent different kinds of rotating compact objects such as regular black holes, extremal regular black holes, and regular starlike configurations.

We present an alternative nonconservative gravitational theory based on the Herglotz variational principle in a fully covariant form. The present model may be seen as an improvement of the theory proposed in Ref. [Lazo et al, Phys. Rev. D 95, 101501 (2017)], whose resulting theory is meaningful just in particular coordinate systems. In the present work, we report a new theory that is free from such a restriction. It is also obtained using the Herglotz variational principle and by taking advantage of the restricted equivalence between Lagrangian functions in the scope of such action principle. The more restricted class of equivalent Lagrangian functions, in comparison with the Hamilton variational principle, is the key point to find a Lagrangian that furnishes a new alternative gravitational theory that is fully covariant. Once the equations that govern the dynamics of the gravitational field are obtained, a few simple cosmological models are investigated. It is found that the Herglotz gravitational field reduces to a single function that, under certain conditions, plays the role of the cosmological constant in general relativity, turning unnecessary the use of dark energy to explain the accelerated expansion of the universe. The linearized version of the theory is also investigated and it is verified that the theory shows a dissipative character in regard to gravitational waves. From observational data, in both scenarios, the Herglotz vector field is estimated.

A finite temperature extension of the effective holographic models for QCD (EHQCD), proposed in Ref.[1], is investigated in the present work. EHQCD models are characterized by two parameters, the conformal dimension of the relevant operator that deforms the CFT and the associated coupling. We find that black hole solutions appear at temperatures higher than some temperature $T_{min}$ and can be categorized in two classes: large and small black holes. A large black hole is thermally stable and it is therefore interpreted as the gravity dual of a non-conformal plasma. A small black hole, on the other hand, is thermally unstable. We show that thermodynamic quantities such as the entropy density $s$, specific heat $C_V$, and speed of sound $c_s$ are sensitive to the model parameters. We investigate perturbations of the black hole solutions and calculate the viscosity coefficients of the corresponding dual non-conformal plasma. For the shear viscosity, we confirm that the ratio $η/s$ is given by the universal result $1/4π$. For the bulk viscosity, the ratio $ζ/s$ varies with the temperature, displaying a rapid growth close to $T_{min}$, and it is sensitive to the model parameters. We compare our results for the thermodynamic quantities with the lattice $SU(N_C)$ results and find that they are compatible as long as the coupling is fixed appropriately as a function of the conformal dimension. We also compare our results for the viscosity coefficients against the JETSCAPE results that are obtained from the analysis of experimental data on heavy ion collisions.

The stability and other physical properties of a class of regular black holes, quasiblack holes, and other electrically charged compact objects are investigated in the present work. The compact objects are obtained by solving the Einstein-Maxwell system of equations assuming spherical symmetry in a static spacetime. The spacetime is split in two regions by a spherical surface of coordinate radius $a$. The interior region contains a nonisotropic charged fluid with a de Sitter type equation of state, $p_r = -ρ_m$, $p_r$ and $ρ_m$ being respectively the radial pressure and the energy density of the fluid. The charge distribution is chosen as a well behaved power-law function. The exterior region is the electrovacuum Reissner-Nordström metric, which is joined to the interior metric through a spherical thin shell (a thin matter layer) placed at the radius $a$. The matter of the shell is assumed to be a perfect fluid satisfying a linear barotropic equation of state, ${\cal P}=ωσ$, with ${\cal P}$ and $σ$ being respectively the pressure and energy density of the shell, with $ω$ being a constant. The exact solutions obtained are analyzed in some detail by exploring the interesting regions of parameter space, complementing the analysis of previous works on similar models. This is the first important contribution of the present study. The stability of the solutions are then investigated considering perturbations around the equilibrium position of the shell. This is the second and the most important contribution of this work. We find that there are stable objects in relatively large regions of the parameter space. In particular, there are stable regular black holes for all values of the parameter $ω$ of interest. Other stable ultracompact objects as quasiblack holes, gravastars, and even overcharged stars are allowed in certain regions of the parameter space.

The main objective of this work is the construction of regular black hole solutions in the context of the Einstein-Maxwell theory. The strategy is to match an interior regular solution to an exterior electrovacuum solution. With this purpose, we first write explicitly the Einstein field equations for the interior regular region. We take an electrically charged nonisotropic fluid, which presents spherical symmetry and a de Sitter type equation of state, where the radial pressure $p_r$ is equal to the negative of energy density $ρ$, $p_r=-ρ$. Then, two solutions for the Einstein equations are built, a regular interior solution for the region with matter satisfying a de Sitter equation of state, and an external solution for the region outside the matter, that corresponds to the Reissner-Nordström metric. To complete the solution we apply the Darmois-Israel junction conditions with a timelike thin shell at the matching surface. It is assumed that the matching surface is composed by a thin shell of matter, i.e., a surface layer in the form a perfect fluid obeying a barotropic equation of state, $\mathcal{P}=ωσ$, $P$ and $σ$ being the intrinsic pressure and energy density of the shell, respectively, and $ω$ a constant parameter. We show that there are electrically charged regular black hole solutions and other compact objects for specific choices of $ω$ and of the other parameters of the model. Some properties of the objects are investigated.

A holographic model is used to investigate the thermodynamics and the phase diagram of a heavy quarks system. From such a model we obtain an equation of state and explore its applicability in astrophysical conditions. For this objective, we work in the context of the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) holographic model for quantum chromodynamics (QCD). At first, we show the existence of a critical point where the first-order transitions line ends, later on, we calculated an analytic expression for the equation of state. Additionally, with the aim of investigating the global properties of compact stars, such as the total gravitational mass and radius, the equation of state is used to solve the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov (TOV) equations for stellar structure. The numerical results show that our equation of state is able to reproduce the expected behavior of hybrid stars. Our main conclusion is that, by using an equation of state emerging in the framework of the EMD holographic model for QCD, it is possible to obtain quark matter properties and that it is also possible to extend the procedure to astrophysical applications.

Hydrodynamics is nowadays understood as an effective field theory that describes the dynamics of the long-wavelength and slow-time fluctuations of an underlying microscopic theory. In this work we extend the relativistic hydrodynamics to third order in the gradient expansion for neutral fluids in a general curved spacetime of $d$ dimensions. We find 58 new transport coefficients, 19 due to third-order scalar corrections and 39 due to tensorial corrections. In the particular case of a conformal fluid, the number of new transport coefficients is reduced to 19, all of them due to third-order tensorial corrections. The dispersion relations of linear fluctuations in the third-order relativistic hydrodynamics is obtained, both in the rest frame of the fluid and in a general moving frame. As an application we obtain some of the transport coefficients of a relativistic conformal fluid in three dimensions by using the AdS/CFT correspondence. These transport coefficients are extracted from the dispersion relations of the linear fluctuations. The gravity dual of the fluctuations in this conformal fluid is described by the gravitational perturbations of four-dimensional anti-de Sitter black branes, which are solutions of the Einstein equations with a negative cosmological constant. To find the hydrodynamic quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the scalar sector we use the SUSY quantum mechanics of the gravitational perturbations of four-dimensional black branes. Such a symmetry allows us to find the wavefunction of the scalar (or sound) sector in the hydrodynamic limit directly from the wavefunction of the vector (or shear) sector, which is usually easier to be found because the perturbation wave equations for the vector sector are much simpler than the ones for the scalar sector.

The linear perturbation theory applied to the study of black holes is a traditional and powerful tool to investigate some of the basic properties of these objects, such as the stability of the event horizon, the spectra of quasinormal modes, the scattering and the production of waves in a process of gravitational collapse. Since long ago, the physical interpretation of the linear fluctuations in the metric of spherically symmetric black holes has been established. In a multipolar expansion, it is known that polar perturbations of a monopole type ($l=0$) can only increase the black-hole mass, axial perturbations of a dipole type ($l=1$) induce a slow rotation in the system, and perturbations with $l\geq 2$ always lead to the production of gravitational waves. However, in relation to the planar Schwarzschild anti--de Sitter black holes (or black branes, for short), there is still no conclusive study on some aspects of the physical meaning of these perturbations. In particular, there is some controversy concerning the polar sector of fluctuations with zero wave number $(k=0)$. Some authors claim that this kind of perturbations causes only a variation in the black-brane mass parameter, while others obtained also evidence for the existence of gravitational waves associated to such modes. The present study aims to contribute to the resolution of this controversy by revealing the physical meaning of the gravitational perturbations of anti--de Sitter black branes. In this work we use the Chandrasekhar's gauge formalism to evaluate the linear variations in the complex Weyl scalars in terms of the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli gauge-invariant quantities. Then we use the Szekeres' proposal for the meaning of the Weyl scalars and the Pirani's criterion for the existence of gravitational radiation in order to give a physical interpretation of the black-brane perturbations with arbitrary wave number value.

A holographic model for QCD is employed to investigate the effects of the gluon condensate on the spectrum and melting of scalar mesons. We find the evolution of the free energy density with the temperature, and the result shows that the temperature of the confinement/deconfinement transition is sensitive to the gluon-condensate parameter. The spectral functions (SPFs) are also obtained and show a series of peaks in the low-temperature regime, indicating the presence of quasiparticle states associated to the mesons, while the number of peaks decreases with the increment of the temperature, characterizing the quasiparticle melting. In the dual gravitational description, the scalar mesons are identified with the black-hole quasinormal modes (QNMs). We obtain the spectrum of QNMs and the dispersion relations corresponding to the scalar-field perturbations of the gravitational background, and find their dependence with the gluon-condensate parameter.

A certain identification of points in a planar Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter (AdS) black hole generates a four-dimensional static black string. In turn, a rotating black string can be obtained from a static one by means of an `illegitimate coordinate transformation', a local boost in the compact direction. On the basis of the gauge/gravity duality, these black strings are dual to rotating thermal states of a strongly interacting conformal field theory (CFT) that lives on a cylinder. In this work, we obtain the complete quasinormal mode (QNM) spectrum of the gravitational perturbations of rotating black strings. Analytic solutions for the dispersion relations are found in the hydrodynamic limit, characterized by fluctuations with wavenumber and frequency much smaller than the Hawking temperature of the string (or the temperature in the CFT dual description). We obtain these dispersion relations both by studying the gravitational perturbations of rotating black strings and by investigating the hydrodynamic fluctuations of a moving fluid living on the boundary of the AdS spacetime. Relativistic effects like the Doppler shift of the frequencies, wavelength contraction, and dilation of the thermalization time are shown explicitly in such a regime. We also investigate the behavior of a sound wave propagating in a viscous fluid for several values of the rotation parameter. The numerical solutions for the fundamental QNMs show a crossover (a transition) from a hydrodynamic-like behavior to a linear relativistic scaling for large wavenumbers. Additionally, we find a new family of QNMs which are purely damped in the zero wavenumber limit and that does not follow as a continuation of QNMs of the static black string, but that appears to be closely related to the algebraically special perturbation modes.

D. Arbañil, P. S. Lemos, V. T. Zanchin, Phys. Rev. D \textbf{88}, 084023 (2013)]. In the relativistic fluid case, a relativistic polytropic equation of state, $p=ωδ^γ$, is assumedd. Here, $δ=ρ-p/(γ-1)$, with $δ$ and $ρ$ being the rest mass density and the energy density, respectively, and $ω$ and $γ$ are respectively the polytropic constant and the polytropic exponent. We assume that the charge density $ρ_e$ is proportional to the energy density $ρ$, $ρ_e = α\, ρ$, with $α$ being a constant such that $0\leq |α|\leq 1$. Some properties of the charged spheres such as mass, total electric charge, radius, redshift, and the speed of sound are analyzed. The dependence of such properties with the polytropic exponent is also investigated. In addition, some limits that arise in general relativity, such as the Chandrasekhar limit, the Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit, the Buchdahl bound and the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound, i.e., the Buchdahl bound for the electric case, are studied. As in a charged non-relativistic polytropic sphere, the charged relativistic polytropic sphere with $γ\to\infty$ and $α\to 1$ saturates the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound, thus indicating that it reaches the quasiblack hole configuration. We show by means of numerical analysis that, as expected, the major differences between the two cases appear in the high energy density region.

We investigate effective holographic models for QCD arising from five dimensional Dilaton-Gravity. The models are characterized by a dilaton with a mass term in the UV, dual to a CFT deformation by a relevant operator, and quadratic in the IR. The UV constraint leads to the explicit breaking of conformal symmetry whereas the IR constraint guarantees linear confinement. We propose semi-analytic interpolations between the UV and the IR and obtain a spectrum for scalar and tensor glueballs consistent with lattice QCD data. We use the glueball spectrum as a physical constraint to find the evolution of the model parameters as the mass term goes to zero. Finally, we reproduce the universal result for the trace anomaly of deformed CFTs and propose a dictionary between this result and the QCD trace anomaly. A nontrivial consequence of this dictionary is the emergence of a $β$ function similar to the two-loop perturbative QCD result.

We show that Guilfoyle's exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations for spherical symmetric static electrically charged matter with a Reissner-Nordström exterior possess a bewildering plethora of different types of solutions. For the parameter space of the solutions we use two normalized variables, $q^2/R^2$ and $r_0/R$, where $q$ is the total electric charge, $r_0$ is the radius of the object, and $R$ is a length representing the square root of the inverse energy density of the matter. The two other parameters, the mass $m$ and the Guilfoyle parameter $a$, both dependent on $q$, $r_0$ and $R$, are analyzed in detail. The full parameter space of solutions $q^2/R^2\times r_0/R$ is explored with the corresponding types of solutions being identified and analyzed. The different types of solutions are regular charged stars, including charged dust stars and stars saturating the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound, quasiblack holes, regular charged black holes with a de Sitter core, regular black holes with a core of phantom charged matter, other exotic regular black holes, Schwarzschild stars, Schwarzschild black holes, Kasner spacetimes, pointlike and planar naked singularities, and the Minkowski spacetime. Allowing for $q^2<0$, in which case it is not possible to interpret $q$ as electric charge, also yields new solutions, some of which are interesting and regular, others are singular. Some of these types of solutions as well as the matter properties have been previously found and studied, here the full spectrum being presented in a unified manner.

A class of nonstationary spacetimes is obtained by means of a conformal transformation of the Schwarzschild metric, where the conformal factor $a(t)$ is an arbitrary function of the time coordinate only. We investigate several situations including some where the final state is a central object with constant mass. The metric is such that there is an initial big-bang type singularity and the final state depends on the chosen conformal factor. The Misner-Sharp mass is computed and a localized central object may be identified. The trap** horizons, geodesic and causal structure of the resulting spacetimes are investigated in detail. When $a(t)$ asymptotes to a constant in a short enough time scale, the spacetime presents an event horizon and its analytical extension reveals black-hole or white-hole regions. On the other hand, when $a(t)$ is unbounded from above as in cosmological models, the spacetime presents no event horizons and may present null singularities in the future. The energy-momentum content and other properties of the respective spacetimes are also investigated.

These are spherically symmetric solutions of general relativity coupled to Maxwell's electromagnetism and charged matter where the metric potentials and electromagnetic fields are related in some particularly simple form. We show that, for certain ranges of the parameters, there are objects which correspond to regular charged black holes, whose interior region is filled by an electrically charged phantom-like fluid, or, in the limiting case, a de Sitter false vacuum fluid, and whose exterior region is Reissner-Nordström. The boundary between both regions is a smooth boundary surface, except in the limiting case where the boundary is made of a massless electrically charged spherically symmetric coat. Buchdahl, by imposing a few physical assumptions on the matter, i.e., its density is a nonincreasing function of the radius and the fluid is a perfect fluid, and on the configuration, such as the exterior is the Schwarzschild solution, found that the radius $r_0$ to mass $m$ ratio of a star would obey the Buchdahl bound $r_0/m\geq9/4$. He noted that the bound was saturated by the Schwarzschild interior solution, the solution with $ρ_{\rm m}(r)= {\rm constant}$, where $ρ_{\rm m}(r)$ is the energy density of the matter at $r$, when the central central pressure blows to infinity. Generalizations of this bound have been studied. One generalization was given by Andréasson by including electrically charged matter and imposing that $p+2p_T \leqρ_{\rm m}$, where $p$ is the radial pressure and $p_T$ the tangential pressure. His bound is given by $r_0/m\geq9/\left(1+\sqrt{1+3\,q^2/r_0^2}\right)^{2}$, the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound, with $q$ being the star's total electric charge. Following Andréasson's proof, the configuration that saturates the Buchdahl bound is an uncharged shell, rather than the Schwarzschild interior solution. By extension, the configurations that saturate the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound are charged shells. One expects then, in turn, that there should exist an electrically charged equivalent to the interior Schwarzschild limit. We find here that this equivalent is provided by the equation $ρ_{\rm m}(r) + {Q^2(r)}/ {\left(8π\,r^4\right)}= {\rm constant}$, where $Q(r)$ is the electric charge at $r$. This equation was put forward by Cooperstock and de la Cruz, and Florides, and realized in Guilfoyle's stars. When the central pressure goes to infinity Guilfoyle's stars are configurations that saturate the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound. It remains to find a proof in Buchdahl's manner such that these configurations are the limiting configurations of the bound.

Inspired in a previous work by McClure and Dyer (Classical Quantum Gravity 23, 1971 (2006)), we analyze some solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations which were originally written to describe charged black holes in cosmological backgrounds. A detailed analysis of the electromagnetic sources for a sufficiently general metric is performed, and then we focus on deriving the electromagnetic four-current as well as the conserved electric charge of each metric. The charged McVittie solution is revisited and a brief study of its causal structure is performed, showing that it may represent a charged black hole in an expanding universe, with the black hole horizon being formed at infinite late times. Charged versions of solutions originally put forward by Vaidya (Vd) and Sultana and Dyer (SD) are also analyzed. It is shown that the charged Sultana-Dyer metric requires a global electric current, besides a central (pointlike) electric charge. With the aim of comparing to the charged McVittie metric, new charged solutions of Vd and SD type are considered. In these cases, the original mass and charge parameters are replaced by particular functions of the cosmological time. In the new generalized charged Vaidya metric the black hole horizon never forms, whereas in the new generalized Sultana-Dyer case both the Cauchy and the black hole horizons develop at infinite late times. A charged version of the Thakurta metric is also studied here. It is also a new solution. As in the charged Sultana-Dyer case, the natural source of the electromagnetic field is a central electric charge with an additional global electric current. The global structure is briefly studied and it is verified that the corresponding spacetime may represent a charged black hole in a cosmological background. All the solutions present initial singularities as found in the McVittie metric.

Rotating charged black strings are solutions of four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant and a non-trivial topology. According to the AdS/CFT correspondence, these black strings are dual to rotating thermal states of a strongly interacting field theory with nonzero chemical potential that lives in a cylinder. The dynamics of fluctuations in the field theory can be studied from the perturbation equations for classical fields in a black-string spacetime. With this motivation in mind, we develop here a completely gauge and tetrad invariant perturbation approach to deal with the gravitoelectromagnetic fluctuations of rotating charged black strings in the presence of sources. As usual, for any charged black hole, a perturbation in the background electromagnetic field induces a metric perturbation and vice versa. In spite of this coupling and the non-vanishing angular momentum, we show that linearization of equations of the Newman-Penrose formalism leads to four separated second-order complex equations for suitable combinations of the spin coefficients, the Weyl and the Maxwell scalars. Then, we generalize the Chandrasekhar transformation theory by the inclusion of sources and apply it to reduce the perturbation problem to four decoupled inhomogeneous wave equations --- a pair for each sector of perturbations. The radial part of such wave equations can be put into Schrodinger-like forms after Fourier transforming them with respect to time. We find that the resulting effective potentials form two pairs of supersymmetric partner potentials and, as a consequence, the fundamental variables of one perturbation sector are related to the variables of the other sector. The relevance of such a symmetry in connection to the AdS/CFT correspondence is discussed, and future applications of the pertubation theory developed here are outlined.

One of the stiffest equations of state for matter in a compact star is constant energy density and this generates the interior Schwarzschild radius to mass relation and the Misner maximum mass for relativistic compact stars. If dark matter populates the interior of stars, and this matter is supersymmetric or of some other type, some of it possessing a tiny electric charge, there is the possibility that highly compact stars can trap a small but non-negligible electric charge. In this case the radius to mass relation for such compact stars should get modifications. We use an analytical scheme to investigate the limiting radius to mass relation and the maximum mass of relativistic stars made of an incompressible fluid with a small electric charge. The investigation is carried out by using the hydrostatic equilibrium equation, i.e., the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation, together with the other equations of structure, with the further hypothesis that the charge distribution is proportional to the energy density. The approach relies on Volkoff and Misner's method to solve the TOV equation. For zero charge one gets the interior Schwarzschild limit, and supposing incompressible boson or fermion matter with constituents with masses of the order of the neutron mass one gets that the maximum mass is the Misner mass. For a small electric charge, our analytical approximating scheme valid in first order in the star's electric charge, shows that the maximum mass increases relatively to the uncharged case, whereas the minimum possible radius decreases, an expected effect since the new field is repulsive aiding the pressure to sustain the star against gravitational collapse.

We investigate the properties of relativistic star spheres made of an electrically charged incompressible fluid, generalizing, thus, the Schwarzschild interior solution. The investigation is carried by integrating numerically the hydrostatic equilibrium equation, i.e., the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation, with the hypothesis that the charge distribution is proportional to the energy density. We match the interior to a Reissner-Nordström exterior, and study some features of these star spheres such as the total mass $M$, the radius $R$, and the total charge $Q$. We also display the pressure profile. For star spheres made of a perfect fluid there is the Buchdahl bound, $R/M\geq 9/4$, a compactness bound found from generic principles. For the Schwarzschild interior solution there is also the known compactness limit, the interior Schwarzschild limit where the configurations attain infinite central pressure, given by $R/M=9/4$, yielding an instance where the Buchdahl bound is saturated. We study this limit of infinite central pressure for the electrically charged stars and compare it with the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound, a limit that, like the Buchdahl bound for the uncharged case, is obtained by imposing some generic physical conditions on charged configurations. We show that the electrical interior Schwarzschild limit of all but two configurations is always below the Buchdahl-Andréasson limit, i.e., we find that the electrical interior Schwarzschild limit does not generically saturate the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound. We also find that the quasiblack hole limit, i.e., the extremal most compact limit for charged incompressible stars, is reached when the matter is highly charged and the star's central pressure tends to infinity. This is one of the two instances where the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound is saturated, the other being the uncharged, interior Schwarzschild solution.

We investigate the quasinormal spectrum of electromagnetic perturbations of rotating black strings. Among the solutions of Einstein equations in the presence of a negative cosmological constant there are asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes whose horizons have the topology of a cylinder. The stationary version of these AdS black holes represents rotating black strings. The conformal field theory (CFT) dual of a black string lives in a Minkowski space with a compact dimension. On the basis of the AdS/CFT duality, we interpret a CFT plasma moving with respect to the preferred rest frame introduced by the topology as the holographic dual to a rotating black string. We explore the consequences of this correspondence by investigating the electromagnetic perturbations of a black string for different rotation parameter values. As usual the electromagnetic quasinormal modes (QNM) correspond to the poles of retarded Green's functions of $R$-symmetry currents in the boundary field theory. The hydrodynamic regime of the QNM dispersion relations are analytically studied. Finally, we investigate numerically the effect of rotation on all the family of black-string electromagnetic quasinormal modes. We interpret these results from the CFT perspective and notice the emergence of effects like Doppler shift of the frequencies and dilation of the thermalization times.

The basic cosmological distances are linked by the Etherington cosmic distance duality relation, $η(z) = D_{L}(z)(1+z)^{-2}/D_{A}(z) \equiv 1$, where $D_{L}$ and $D_{A}$ are, respectively, the luminosity and angular diameter distances. In order to test its validity, some authors have proposed phenomenological expressions for $η(z)$ thereby deforming the original Etherington's relation and comparing the resulting expressions with the available and future cosmological data. The relevance of such studies is unquestionable since any violation of the cosmic distance duality relation could be the signal of new physics or non-negligible astrophysical effects in the usually assumed perfectly transparent Universe. In this letter, we show that under certain conditions such expressions can be derived from a more fundamental approach with the parameters appearing in the $η(z)$ expression defining the cosmic absorption parameter as recently discussed by Chen and Kantowski. Explicit examples involving four different parametrizations of the deformation function are given. Based on such an approach, it is also found that the latest Supernova data can also be explained in the framework of a pure cold dark matter model (Einstein-de Sitter). Two different scenarios with cosmic absorption are discussed. Only if the cosmic opacity is fully negligible, the description of an accelerating Universe powered by dark energy or some alternative gravity theory must be invoked.

To have the correct picture of a black hole as a whole it is of crucial importance to understand its interior. The singularities that lurk inside the horizon of the usual Kerr-Newman family of black hole solutions signal an endpoint to the physical laws and as such should be substituted in one way or another. A proposal that has been around for sometime, is to replace the singular region of the spacetime by a region containing some form of matter or false vacuum configuration that can also cohabit with the black hole interior. Black holes without singularities are called regular black holes. In the present work regular black hole solutions are found within general relativity coupled to Maxwell's electromagnetism and charged matter. We show that there are objects which correspond to regular charged black holes, whose interior region is de Sitter, whose exterior region is Reissner-Nordström, and the boundary between both regions is made of an electrically charged spherically symmetric coat. There are several type of solutions: regular nonextremal black holes with a null matter boundary, regular nonextremal black holes with a timelike matter boundary, regular extremal black holes with a timelike matter boundary, and regular overcharged stars with a timelike matter boundary. The main physical and geometrical properties of such charged regular solutions are analysed.

We call the relation above between $W$ and $φ$, the Weyl-Guilfoyle relation, and it generalizes the usual Weyl relation, for which $a=1$. For both, Weyl and Weyl-Guilfoyle relations, the electrically charged fluid, if present, may have nonzero pressure. Fluids obeying the Weyl-Guilfoyle relation are called Weyl-Guilfoyle fluids. These fluids, under the assumption of spherical symmetry, exhibit solutions which can be matched to the electrovacuum Reissner-Nordström spacetime to yield global asymptotically flat cold charged stars. We show that a particular spherically symmetric class of stars found by Guilfoyle has a well-behaved limit which corresponds to an extremal Reissner-Nordström quasiblack hole with pressure, i.e., in which the fluid inside the quasihorizon has electric charge and pressure, and the geometry outside the quasihorizon is given by the extremal Reissner-Nordström metric. The main physical properties of such charged stars and quasiblack holes with pressure are analyzed. An important development provided by these stars and quasiblack holes is that without pressure the solutions, Majumdar-Papapetrou solutions, are unstable to kinetic perturbations. Solutions with pressure may avoid this instability. If stable, these cold quasiblack holes with pressure, i.e., these compact relativistic charged spheres, are really frozen stars.

The AdS/CFT duality has established a map** between quantities in the bulk AdS black-hole physics and observables in a boundary finite-temperature field theory. Such a relationship appears to be valid for an arbitrary number of spacetime dimensions, extrapolating the original formulations of Maldacena's correspondence. In the same sense properties like the hydrodynamic behavior of AdS black-hole fluctuations have been proved to be universal. We investigate in this work the complete quasinormal spectra of gravitational perturbations of $d$-dimensional plane-symmetric AdS black holes (black branes). Holographically the frequencies of the quasinormal modes correspond to the poles of two-point correlation functions of the field-theory stress-energy tensor. The important issue of the correct boundary condition to be imposed on the gauge-invariant perturbation fields at the AdS boundary is studied and elucidated in a fully $d$-dimensional context. We obtain the dispersion relations of the first few modes in the low-, intermediate- and high-wavenumber regimes. The sound-wave (shear-mode) behavior of scalar (vector)-type low-frequency quasinormal mode is analytically and numerically confirmed. These results are found employing both a power series method and a direct numerical integration scheme.

These results are particularly relevant for the AdS/CFT correspondence, since the eikonal regime is characterized by the existence of long-lived modes which (presumably) dominate the decay timescale of the perturbations. We confirm all the main qualitative features of these slowly-damped modes as predicted by Festuccia and Liu (arXiv:0811.1033) for the scalar-field (tensor-type gravitational) fluctuations. However, quantitatively we find dimensional-dependent correction factors. We also investigate the dependence of the QNM frequencies on the horizon radius of the black hole (brane) and the angular momentum (wavenumber) of vector- and scalar-type gravitational perturbations.

Previous theorems concerning Weyl type systems, including Majumdar-Papapetrou systems, are generalized in two ways, namely, we take these theorems into d spacetime dimensions (${\rm d}\geq4$), and we also consider the very interesting Weyl-Guilfoyle systems, i.e., general relativistic charged fluids with nonzero pressure. In particular within Newton-Coulomb theory of charged gravitating fluids, a theorem by Bonnor (1980) in three-dimensional space is generalized to arbitrary $({\rm d}-1)>3$ space dimensions. Then, we prove a new theorem for charged gravitating fluid systems in which we find the condition that the charge density and the matter density should obey. Within general relativity coupled to charged dust fluids, a theorem by De and Raychaudhuri (1968) in four-dimensional spacetimes in rendered into arbitrary ${\rm d}>4$ dimensions. Then a theorem, new in ${\rm d}=4$ and ${\rm d}>4$ dimensions, for Weyl-Guilfoyle systems, is stated and proved, in which we find the condition that the charge density, the matter density, the pressure, and the electromagnetic energy density should obey. This theorem comprises, as particular cases, a theorem by Gautreau and Hoffman (1973) and results in four dimensions by Guilfoyle (1999). Upon connection of an interior charged solution to an exterior Tangherlini solution (i.e., a Reissner-Nordström solution in d-dimensions), one is able to give a general definition for gravitational mass for this kind of relativistic systems and find a mass relation with the several quantities of the interior solution. It is also shown that for sources of finite extent the mass is identical to the Tolman mass.

Geodesic motion determines important features of spacetimes. Null unstable geodesics are closely related to the appearance of compact objects to external observers and have been associated with the characteristic modes of black holes. By computing the Lyapunov exponent, which is the inverse of the instability timescale associated with this geodesic motion, we show that, in the eikonal limit, quasinormal modes of black holes in any dimensions are determined by the parameters of the circular null geodesics. This result is independent of the field equations and only assumes a stationary, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat line element, but it does not seem to be easily extendable to anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We further show that (i) in spacetime dimensions greater than four, equatorial circular timelike geodesics in a Myers-Perry black hole background are unstable, and (ii) the instability timescale of equatorial null geodesics in Myers-Perry spacetimes has a local minimum for spacetimes of dimension d > 5.

The electromagnetic and gravitational quasinormal spectra of $(3+1)$-dimensional plane-symmetric anti-de Sitter black holes are analyzed in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. According to such a correspondence, the electromagnetic and gravitational quasinormal frequencies of these black holes are associated respectively to the poles of retarded correlation functions of $R$-symmetry currents and stress-energy tensor in the holographically dual conformal field theory: the $(2+1)$-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=8$ super-Yang-Mills theory. The connection between AdS black holes and the corresponding field theory is used to unambiguously fix the boundary conditions that enter the proper definition of quasinormal modes. Such a procedure also helps one to decide, among the various different possibilities, what are the appropriate gauge-invariant quantities one should use in order to correctly describe the electromagnetic and gravitational blackhole perturbations. These choices imply in different dispersion relations for the quasinormal modes when compared to some of the results in the literature. In particular, the long-distance, low-frequency limit of dispersion relations presents the characteristic hydrodynamic behavior of a conformal field theory with the presence of diffusion, shear, and sound wave modes. There is also a family of purely damped electromagnetic modes which tend to the bosonic Matsubara frequencies in the long-wavelength regime.

Bonnor stars are regular static compact configurations in equilibrium, composed of an extremal dust fluid, a charged dust fluid where the mass density is equal to the charge density, joined to an exterior vacuum solution, within Newtonian gravity and general relativity. In four dimensions, they obey the corresponding Majumdar-Papapetrou system, where the gravitational potential is a simple function of the electric potential field and the fluid, when there is one, is made of extremal dust. The Majumdar-Papapetrou system can be generalized to d spacetime dimensions. Thus, it is natural to study Bonnor solutions in higher d dimensions. We analyze Newton-Coulomb theory with an electrically charged fluid in a Majumdar-Papapetrou context, in d=n+1 spacetime dimensions, n the number of spatial dimensions. Within the Newtonian theory, in vacuum, the Majumdar-Papapetrou relation for the gravitational potential in terms of the electric potential, and its related Weyl relation, are equivalent, in contrast with general relativity. We study a class of spherically symmetric Bonnor stars. Under sufficient compactification they form point mass charged Newtonian singularities. We study the analogue systems in the Einstein-Maxwell theory with an electrically charged fluid. We restate some properties of this system and obtain spherically symmetric Bonnor star solutions in d=n+1 spacetime dimensions. These stars, under compactification, form quasi-black holes. Whereas there are no solutions for Newtonian or relativistic stars supported by degenerate pressure in higher dimensions, higher dimensional Bonnor stars, supported by electric repulsion, do indeed have solutions within Newtonian gravity and general relativity. So the existence of stars depends on the number of dimensions and on the underlying field content.

The results obtained here are similar to the case of gravitational waves emission, as long we consider only the energy loss. The main difference being that in the present work the energy emitted is explicitly calculated solving the equation of motion without further approximations. It is expected that the present analysis may be useful when studying the analogous problem of dissipation in gravitational systems.

The hydrostatic equation which arises from general relativity, is modified considerably to meet the requirements of the inclusion of the charge. In order to see any appreciable effect on the phenomenology of the neutron stars, the charge and the electrical fields have to be huge (~ 10^{21} Volts/cm). These stars are not however stable from the viewpoint that each charged particle is unbound to the uncharged particles, and thus the system collapses one step further to a charged black hole

A large amount of work has been dedicated to studying general relativity coupled to non-Abelian Yang-Mills type theories. It has been shown that the magnetic monopole, a solution of the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations can be coupled to gravitation. For a low Higgs mass there are regular solutions, and for a sufficiently massive monopole the system develops an extremal magnetic Reissner-Nordstrom quasi-horizon. These solutions, called quasi-black holes, although non-singular, are arbitrarily close to having a horizon. However, at the critical value the quasi-black hole turns into a degenerate spacetime. On the other hand, for a high Higgs mass, a sufficiently massive monopole develops also a quasi-black hole, but it turns into an extremal true horizon, with matter fields outside. One can also put a small Schwarzschild black hole inside the magnetic monopole, an example of a non-Abelian black hole. Surprisingly, Majumdar-Papapetrou systems, Abelian systems constructed from extremal dust, also show a resembling behavior. Previously, we have reported that one can find Majumdar-Papapetrou solutions which can be arbitrarily close of being a black hole, displaying quasi-black hole behavior. With the aim of better understanding the similarities between gravitational monopoles and Majumdar-Papapetrou systems, we study a system composed of two extremal electrically charged spherical shells (or stars, generically) in the Einstein--Maxwell--Majumdar-Papapetrou theory. We review the gravitational properties of the monopoles, and compare with the properties of the double extremal electric shell system. These quasi-black holes can help in the understanding of true black holes, and can give insight into the nature of the entropy of black holes in the form of entanglement.

We study in detail the quasinormal modes of linear gravitational perturbations of plane-symmetric anti-de Sitter black holes. The wave equations are obtained by means of the Newman-Penrose formalism and the Chandrasekhar transformation theory. We show that oscillatory modes decay exponentially with time such that these black holes are stable against gravitational perturbations. Our numerical results show that in the large (small) black hole regime the frequencies of the ordinary quasinormal modes are proportional to the horizon radius $r_{+}$ (wave number $k$). The frequency of the purely damped mode is very close to the algebraically special frequency in the small horizon limit, and goes as $ik^{2}/3r_{+}$ in the opposite limit. This result is confirmed by an analytical method based on the power series expansion of the frequency in terms of the horizon radius. The same procedure applied to the Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter spacetime proves that the purely damped frequency goes as $i(l-1)(l+2)/3r_{+}$, where $l$ is the quantum number characterizing the angular distribution. Finally, we study the limit of high overtones and find that the frequencies become evenly spaced in this regime. The spacing of the frequency per unit horizon radius seems to be a universal quantity, in the sense that it is independent of the wave number, perturbation parity and black hole size.

In the present work we consider Einstein-Maxwell solutions in d-dimensional spacetimes and show that there are Majumdar-Papapetrou type solutions for all ${\rm d} \geq 4$. It is verified that the equilibrium is independent of the shape of the distribution of the charged matter. It is also showed that for perfect fluid solutions satisfying the Majumdar-Papapetrou condition with a boundary where the pressure is zero, the pressure vanishes everywhere, and that the $({\rm d}-1)$-dimensional spatial section of the spacetime is conformal to a Ricci-flat space. The Majumdar-Papapetrou system is the subset of the Einstein-Maxwell-charged dust matter theory, when the charge of each particle is equal to its mass. Solutions for this system are less difficult to find, in general one does not need even to impose any spatial symmetry a priori. For instance, any number of extreme Reissner-Nordstrom solutions (which in vacuum reduce to extreme Reissner-Nordstrom black holes) located at will is a solution. In matter one can also find solutions with some ease. Here we find an exact solution of the Majumdar-Papapetrou system, a spherically symmetric charged thick shell, with mass m, outer radius r_o, and inner radius r_i. This solution consists of three regions, an inner Minkowski region, a middle region with extreme charged dust matter, and an outer Reissner-Nordstrom region. The matching of the regions, obeying the usual junction conditions for boundary surfaces, is continuous. For vanishing inner radius, one obtains a Bonnor star, whereas for vanishing thickness, one obtains an infinitesimally thin shell. For sufficiently high mass of the thick shell or sufficiently small outer radius, it forms an extreme Reissner-Nordstrom quasi-black hole, i.e., a star whose gravitational properties are virtually indistinguishable from a true extreme black hole. This quasi-black hole has no hair and has a naked horizon, meaning that the Riemann tensor at the horizon on an infalling probe diverges. At the critical value, when the mass is equal to the outer radius, m=r_o, there is no smooth manifold. Above the critical value when m>r_o there is no solution, the shell collapses into a singularity. Systems with m< r_o are neutrally stable. Many of these properties are similar to those of gravitational monopoles.

We find that the global balance of the forces allows a huge charge (~ 10^{20} Coulomb) to be present in a neutron star producing a very high electric field (~ 10^{21} V/m). We have studied the particular case of a polytropic equation of state and assumed that the charge distribution is proportional to the mass density. The charged stars have large mass and radius as we should expect due to the effect of the repulsive Coulomb force with the M/R ratio increasing with charge. In the limit of the maximum charge the mass goes up to ~ 10 M_sun which is much higher than the maximum mass allowed for a neutral compact star. However, the local effect of the forces experienced by a single charged particle, makes it to discharge quickly. This creates a global force imbalance and the system collapses to a charged black hole.

We study the effect of electric charge in compact stars assuming that the charge distribution is proportional to the mass density. The pressure and the density of the matter inside the stars are large, and the gravitational field is intense. This indicates that electric charge and a strong electric field can also be present. The relativistic hydrostatic equilibrium equation, i.e., the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation, is modified in order to include electric charge. We perform a detailed numerical study of the effect of electric charge using a polytropic equation of state. We conclude that in order to see any appreciable effect on the phenomenology of the compact stars, the electric fields have to be huge (~ 10^{21} V/m), which implies that the total charge is Q ~ 10^{20} Coulomb. From the local effect of the forces experienced on a single charged particle, it is expected that each individual charged particle is quickly ejected from the star. This in turn produces a huge force imbalance, and the gravitational force overwhelms the repulsive Coulomb and fluid pressure forces. The star can then collapse to form a charged black hole before all the charge leaves the system.
