Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is attracting a lot of attention in the last years, thanks to its many remarkable properties. These include the presence of single-photon emitters with superior optical properties, which make it an ideal candidate for a plethora of photonic technologies. However, despite the large number of experimental results and theoretical calculations, the structure of the defects responsible for the observed emission is still under debate. In this work, we visualize individual atomic-scale defects in hBN with atomic force microscopy under ambient conditions and observe multiple narrow emission lines from optically stable emitters. This direct observation of the structure of the defects combined with density functional theory calculations of their band structures and electronic properties allows us to associate the existence of several single-photon transitions to the observed defects. Our work sheds light on the origin of single-photon emission in hBN that is important for the understanding and tunability of high-quality emitters in optoelectronics and quantum technologies.

Antimonene -- a single layer of antimony atoms -- and its few layer forms are among the latest additions to the 2D mono-elemental materials family. Numerous predictions and experimental evidence of its remarkable properties including (opto)electronic, energetic or biomedical, among others, together with its robustness under ambient conditions, have attracted the attention of the scientific community. However, experimental evidence of its electrical properties is still lacking. Here, we characterized the electronic properties of mechanically exfoliated flakes of few-layer (FL) antimonene of different thicknesses (~ 2-40 nm) through photoemission electron microscopy, kelvin probe force microscopy and transport measurements, which allows us to estimate a sheet resistance of ~ 1200 $Ω$sq$^{-1}$ and a mobility of ~ 150 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ in ambient conditions, independent of the flake thickness. Alternatively, our theoretical calculations indicate that topologically protected surface states (TPSS) should play a key role in the electronic properties of FL antimonene, which supports our experimental findings. We anticipate our work will trigger further experimental studies on TPSS in FL antimonene thanks to its simple structure and significant stability in ambient environments.

We introduce scanning-probe-assisted nanowire circuitry (SPANC) as a new method to fabricate electrodes for the characterization of electrical transport properties at the nanoscale. SPANC uses an atomic force microscope (AFM) to manipulate nanowires to create complex and highly conductive nanostructures (paths) that work as nanoelectrodes, allowing connectivity and electrical characterization of other nano-objects. The paths are formed by the spontaneous cold welding of gold nanowires upon mechanical contact, leading to an excellent contact resistance of about 9 Ohms/junction. SPANC is an easy to use and cost-effective technique that fabricates clean nanodevices. Hence, this new method can complement and/or be an alternative to other well-established methods to fabricate nanocircuits such as electron beam lithography (EBL). The circuits made by SPANC are easily reconfigurable, and their fabrication does not require the use of polymers and chemicals. In this work, we present a few examples that illustrate the capabilities of this method, allowing robust device fabrication and electrical characterization of several nano-objects with sizes down to aprox. 10 nm, well below the current smallest size able to be contacted in a device using the standard available technology (around 30 nm). Importantly, we also provide the first experimental determination of the sheet resistance of thin antimonene flakes.

Molecular wires are essential components for future nanoscale electronics. However, the preparation of individual long conductive molecules is still a challenge. MMX metal-organic polymers are quasi-one-dimensional sequences of single halide atoms (X) bridging subunits with two metal ions (MM) connected by organic ligands. They are excellent electrical conductors as bulk macroscopic crystals and as nanoribbons. However, according to theoretical calculations, the electrical conductance found in the experiments should be even higher. Here we demonstrate a novel and simple drop-casting procedure to isolate bundles of few to single MMX chains. Furthermore, we report an exponential dependence of the electrical resistance of one or two MMX chains as a function of their length that does not agree with predictions based on their theoretical band structure. We attribute this dependence to strong Anderson localization originated by structural defects. Theoretical modeling confirms that the current is limited by structural defects, mainly vacancies of iodine atoms, through which the current is constrained to flow. Nevertheless, measurable electrical transport along distances beyond 250 nm surpasses that of all other molecular wires reported so far. This work places in perspective the role of defects in one-dimensional wires and their importance for molecular electronics.

The future of 2D flexible electronics relies on the preparation of conducting ultrathin films of materials with mechanical robustness and flexibility in a simple but controlled manner. In this respect, metal-organic compounds present advantages over inorganic laminar crystals owing to their structural, chemical and functional diversity. While most metal-organic compounds are usually prepared in bulk, recent work has shown that some of them are processable down to low dimensional forms. Here we report the one-pot preparation, carried out at the water-air interface, of ultrathin (down to 4 nm) films of the metal-organic compound [Cu2I2(TAA)]n (TAA= thioacetamide). The films are shown to be homogenous over mm2 areas, smooth, highly transparent, mechanically robust and good electrical conductors with memristive behavior at low frequencies. This combination of properties, as well as the industrial availability of the two building blocks required for the preparation, demonstrates their wide range potential in future flexible and transparent electronics.

We achieve fine tuning of graphene effective do** by applying ultrahigh pressures (> 10 GPa) using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) diamond tips. Specific areas in graphene flakes are irreversibly flattened against a SiO2 substrate. Our work represents the first demonstration of local creation of very stable effective p-doped graphene regions with nanometer precision, as unambiguously verified by a battery of techniques. Importantly, the do** strength depends monotonically on the applied pressure, allowing a controlled tuning of graphene electronics. Through this do** effect, ultrahigh pressure modifications include the possibility of selectively modifying graphene areas to improve their electrical contact with metal electrodes, as shown by Conductive AFM. Density Functional Theory calculations and experimental data suggest that this pressure level induces the onset of covalent bonding between graphene and the underlying SiO2 substrate. Our work opens a convenient avenue to tuning the electronics of 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures through pressure with nanometer resolution.

Multipartite entanglement has been shown to be of particular relevance for a better understanding and exploitation of the dynamics and flow of entanglement in multiparty systems. This calls for analysis aimed at identifying the appropriate processes that guarantee the emergence of multipartite entanglement in a wide range of scenarios. Here we carry on such analysis considering a system of two initially entangled qubits, one of which is let to interact with a third qubit according to an arbitrary unitary evolution. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions on the corresponding Kraus operators, to discern whether the evolved state pertains to either one of the classes of 3-qubit pure states that exhibit some kind of entanglement, namely biseparable, W-, and GHZ- genuine entangled classes. Our results provide a classification of the Kraus operators according to their capacity of producing 3-qubit entanglement, and pave the way for extending the analysis to larger systems and determining the particular interactions that must be implemented in order to create, enhance and distribute entanglement in a specific manner.

We analyse some physical consequences when supersymmetry is broken by a set of D-branes and/or orientifold planes in Type II string theories. Generically, there are global dilaton tadpoles at the disk level when the transverse space is compact. By taking the toy model of a set of electric charges in a compact space, we discuss two different effects appearing when global tadpoles are not cancelled. On the compact directions a constant term appears that allows to solve the equations of motion. On the non-compact directions Poincaré invariance is broken. We analyse some examples where the Poincaré invariance is broken along the time direction (cosmological models). After that, we discuss how to obtain a finite interaction between D-branes and orientifold planes in the compact space at the supergravity level.

We describe a simple mechanism that can lead to inflation within string-based brane-world scenarios. The idea is to start from a supersymmetric configuration with two parallel static Dp-branes, and slightly break the supersymmetry conditions to produce a very flat potential for the field that parametrises the distance between the branes, i.e. the inflaton field. This breaking can be achieved in various ways: by slight relative rotations of the branes with small angles, by considering small relative velocities between the branes, etc. If the breaking parameter is sufficiently small, a large number of e-folds can be produced within the D-brane, for small changes of the configuration in the compactified directions. Such a process is local, i.e. it does not depend very strongly on the compactification space nor on the initial conditions. Moreover, the breaking induces a very small velocity and acceleration, which ensures very small slow-roll parameters and thus an almost scale invariant spectrum of metric fluctuations, responsible for the observed temperature anisotropies in the microwave background. Inflation ends as in hybrid inflation, triggered by the negative curvature of the string tachyon potential. In this paper we elaborate on one of the simplest examples: two almost parallel D4-branes in a flat compactified space.

Motivated by the mixing of UV and IR effects, we test the OPE formula in noncommutative field theory. First we look at the renormalization of local composite operators, identifying some of their characteristic IR/UV singularities. At low energies, we obtain a nonsupersymmetric gauge theory with three left-handed quarks in the adjoint of SU(N). In terms of the five dimensional gauged supergravity, there is an unstable critical point in the scalar potential for fluctuations of some fields in a nontrivial representation of the symmetry group SU(3). On the field theory side, this corresponds to dynamical breaking of the SU(3) chiral symmetry down to SO(3). We compute the condensate of the quark bilinear and the two-point correlation function of the spontaneously broken currents from supergravity and find a nonzero `pion' decay constant, f_pi.

We present a general analysis of all the possible soft breakings of N=2 supersymmetric QCD, preserving the analytic properties of the Seiberg-Witten solutions for the SU(2) group with Nf=1, 2, 3 hypermultiplets. We obtain all the couplings of the spurion fields in terms of properties of the Seiberg-Witten periods, which we express in terms of elementary elliptic functions by uniformizing the elliptic curves associated to each number of flavors. We analyze in detail the monodromy properties of the softly broken theory, and obtain them by a particular embedding into a pure gauge theory with higher rank group. This allows to write explicit expressions of the effective potential, which are close to the exact answer for moderate values of the supersymmetry breaking parameters. The vacuum structures and phases of the broken theories will be analyzed in the forthcoming second part of this paper.
