Lip-based biometric authentication (LBBA) has attracted many researchers during the last decade. The lip is specifically interesting for biometric researchers because it is a twin biometric with the potential to function both as a physiological and a behavioral trait. Although much valuable research was conducted on LBBA, none of them considered the different emotions of the client during the video acquisition step of LBBA, which can potentially affect the client's facial expressions and speech tempo. We proposed a novel network structure called WhisperNetV2, which extends our previously proposed network called WhisperNet. Our proposed network leverages a deep Siamese structure with triplet loss having three identical SlowFast networks as embedding networks. The SlowFast network is an excellent candidate for our task since the fast pathway extracts motion-related features (behavioral lip movements) with a high frame rate and low channel capacity. The slow pathway extracts visual features (physiological lip appearance) with a low frame rate and high channel capacity. Using an open-set protocol, we trained our network using the CREMA-D dataset and acquired an Equal Error Rate (EER) of 0.005 on the test set. Considering that the acquired EER is less than most similar LBBA methods, our method can be considered as a state-of-the-art LBBA method.

We consider a status update system consisting of a finite-state Markov source, an energy-harvesting-enabled transmitter, and a sink. The forward and feedback channels between the transmitter and the sink are error-prone. We study the problem of minimizing the long-term time average of a (generic) distortion function subject to an energy causality constraint. Since the feedback channel is error-prone, the transmitter has only partial knowledge about the transmission results and, consequently, about the estimate of the source state at the sink. Therefore, we model the problem as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), which is then cast as a belief-MDP problem. The infinite belief space makes solving the belief-MDP difficult. Thus, by exploiting a specific property of the belief evolution, we truncate the state space and formulate a finite-state MDP problem, which is then solved using the relative value iteration algorithm (RVIA). Furthermore, we propose a low-complexity transmission policy in which the belief-MDP problem is transformed into a sequence of per-slot optimization problems. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed policies and their superiority compared to a baseline policy. Moreover, we numerically show that the proposed policies have switching-type structures.

We propose Deep-Motion-Net: an end-to-end graph neural network (GNN) architecture that enables 3D (volumetric) organ shape reconstruction from a single in-treatment kV planar X-ray image acquired at any arbitrary projection angle. Estimating and compensating for true anatomical motion during radiotherapy is essential for improving the delivery of planned radiation dose to target volumes while sparing organs-at-risk, and thereby improving the therapeutic ratio. Achieving this using only limited imaging available during irradiation and without the use of surrogate signals or invasive fiducial markers is attractive. The proposed model learns the mesh regression from a patient-specific template and deep features extracted from kV images at arbitrary projection angles. A 2D-CNN encoder extracts image features, and four feature pooling networks fuse these features to the 3D template organ mesh. A ResNet-based graph attention network then deforms the feature-encoded mesh. The model is trained using synthetically generated organ motion instances and corresponding kV images. The latter is generated by deforming a reference CT volume aligned with the template mesh, creating digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRRs) at required projection angles, and DRR-to-kV style transferring with a conditional CycleGAN model. The overall framework was tested quantitatively on synthetic respiratory motion scenarios and qualitatively on in-treatment images acquired over full scan series for liver cancer patients. Overall mean prediction errors for synthetic motion test datasets were 0.16$\pm$0.13 mm, 0.18$\pm$0.19 mm, 0.22$\pm$0.34 mm, and 0.12$\pm$0.11 mm. Mean peak prediction errors were 1.39 mm, 1.99 mm, 3.29 mm, and 1.16 mm.

In recent times, a plethora of hardware accelerators have been put forth for graph learning applications such as vertex classification and graph classification. However, previous works have paid little attention to Knowledge Graph Completion (KGC), a task that is well-known for its significantly higher algorithm complexity. The state-of-the-art KGC solutions based on graph convolution neural network (GCN) involve extensive vertex/relation embedding updates and complicated score functions, which are inherently cumbersome for acceleration. As a result, existing accelerator designs are no longer optimal, and a novel algorithm-hardware co-design for KG reasoning is needed.
Recently, brain-inspired HyperDimensional Computing (HDC) has been introduced as a promising solution for lightweight machine learning, particularly for graph learning applications. In this paper, we leverage HDC for an intrinsically more efficient and acceleration-friendly KGC algorithm. We also co-design an acceleration framework named HDReason targeting FPGA platforms. On the algorithm level, HDReason achieves a balance between high reasoning accuracy, strong model interpretability, and less computation complexity. In terms of architecture, HDReason offers reconfigurability, high training throughput, and low energy consumption. When compared with NVIDIA RTX 4090 GPU, the proposed accelerator achieves an average 10.6x speedup and 65x energy efficiency improvement. When conducting cross-models and cross-platforms comparison, HDReason yields an average 4.2x higher performance and 3.4x better energy efficiency with similar accuracy versus the state-of-the-art FPGA-based GCN training platform.

We address the problem of real-time remote tracking of a partially observable Markov source in an energy harvesting system with an unreliable communication channel. We consider both sampling and transmission costs. Different from most prior studies that assume the source is fully observable, the sampling cost renders the source partially observable. The goal is to jointly optimize sampling and transmission policies for two semantic-aware metrics: i) a general distortion measure and ii) the age of incorrect information (AoII). We formulate a stochastic control problem. To solve the problem for each metric, we cast a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), which is transformed into a belief MDP. Then, for both AoII under the perfect channel setup and distortion, we express the belief as a function of the age of information (AoI). This expression enables us to effectively truncate the corresponding belief space and formulate a finite-state MDP problem, which is solved using the relative value iteration algorithm. For the AoII metric in the general setup, a deep reinforcement learning policy is proposed to solve the belief MDP problem. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the derived policies and, in particular, reveal a non-monotonic switching-type structure of the real-time optimal policy with respect to AoI.

We study a real-time tracking problem in an energy harvesting status update system with a Markov source and an imperfect channel, considering both sampling and transmission costs. The problem primary challenge stems from the non-observability of the source due to the sampling cost. By using the age of incorrect information (AoII) as a semantic-aware performance metric, our main goal is to find an optimal policy that minimizes the time average AoII subject to an energy-causality constraint. To this end, a stochastic optimization problem is formulated and solved by modeling it as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP). More specifically, to solve the main problem, we use the notion of a belief state and cast the problem as a belief MDP problem. Then, for the perfect channel setup, we effectively truncate the corresponding belief space and solve the MDP problem using the relative value iteration method. For the general setup, a deep reinforcement learning policy is proposed. The simulation results show the efficacy of the derived policies in comparison to an AoI-optimal policy and an opportunistic baseline policy.

We consider a multi-source relaying system where independent sources randomly generate status update packets which are sent to the destination with the aid of a relay through unreliable links. We develop transmission scheduling policies to minimize the weighted sum average age of information (AoI) subject to transmission capacity and long-run average resource constraints. We formulate a stochastic control optimization problem and solve it using a constrained Markov decision process (CMDP) approach and a drift-plus-penalty method. The CMDP problem is solved by transforming it into an MDP problem using the Lagrangian relaxation method. We theoretically analyze the structure of optimal policies for the MDP problem and subsequently propose a structure-aware algorithm that returns a practical near-optimal policy. Using the drift-plus-penalty method, we devise a near-optimal low-complexity policy that performs the scheduling decisions dynamically. We also develop a model-free deep reinforcement learning policy for which the Lyapunov optimization theory and a dueling double deep Q-network are employed. The complexities of the proposed policies are analyzed. Simulation results are provided to assess the performance of our policies and validate the theoretical results. The results show up to 91% performance improvement compared to a baseline policy.

In this paper, we study a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) based framework for an online end-user service provisioning in a Network Function Virtualization (NFV)-enabled network. We formulate an optimization problem aiming to minimize the cost of network resource utilization. The main challenge is provisioning the online service requests by fulfilling their Quality of Service (QoS) under limited resource availability. Moreover, fulfilling the stochastic service requests in a large network is another challenge that is evaluated in this paper. To solve the formulated optimization problem in an efficient and intelligent manner, we propose a Deep Q-Network for Adaptive Resource allocation (DQN-AR) in NFV-enable network for function placement and dynamic routing which considers the available network resources as DQN states. Moreover, the service's characteristics, including the service life time and number of the arrival requests, are modeled by the Uniform and Exponential distribution, respectively. In addition, we evaluate the computational complexity of the proposed method. Numerical results carried out for different ranges of parameters reveal the effectiveness of our framework. In specific, the obtained results show that the average number of admitted requests of the network increases by 7 up to 14% and the network utilization cost decreases by 5 and 20 %.

Jujube is a fruit mainly cultivated in India, China and Iran and has many health benefits. It is sold both fresh and dried. There are several factors in jujube pricing such as weight, wrinkles and defections. Some jujube farmers sell their product all at once, without any proper sorting or classification, for an average price. Our studies and experiences show that their profit can increase significantly if their product is sold after the sorting process. There are some traditional sorting methods for dried jujube fruit but they are costly, time consuming and can be inaccurate due to human error. Nowadays, computer vision combined with machine learning methods, is used increasingly in food industry for sorting and classification purposes and solve many of the traditional sorting methods' problems. In this paper we are proposing a computer vision-based method for grading jujube fruits using machine learning techniques which will take most of the important pricing factors into account and can be used to increase the profit of farmers. In this method we first acquire several images from different samples and then extract their visual features such as color features, shape and size features, texture features, defection and wrinkle features and then we select the most useful features using feature selection algorithms like PCA and CFS. A feature vector is obtained for each sample and we use these vectors to train our classifiers to be able to specify the corresponding pre-defined group for each of the samples. We used different classifiers and training methods in order to obtain the best result and by using decision tree we could reach 98.8% accuracy of the classification.

This paper studies a novel approach for successive interference cancellation (SIC) ordering and beamforming in a multiple antennas non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network with multi-carrier multi-user setup. To this end, we formulate a joint beamforming design, subcarrier allocation, user association, and SIC ordering algorithm to maximize the worst-case energy efficiency (EE). The formulated problem is a non-convex mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) which is generally difficult to solve. To handle it, we first adopt the linearizion technique as well as relaxing the integer variables, and then we employ the Dinkelbach algorithm to convert it into a more mathematically tractable form. The adopted non-convex optimization problem is transformed into an equivalent rank-constrained semidefinite programming (SDP) and is solved by SDP relaxation and exploiting sequential fractional programming. Furthermore, to strike a balance between complexity and performance, a low complex approach based on alternative optimization is adopted. Numerical results unveil that the proposed SIC ordering method outperforms the conventional existing works addressed in the literature.

Different from previous energy efficiency (EE) based or the average age of information (AAoI)-based network designs, we propose a unified metric for simultaneously optimizing ESE and AAoI of the network. To further improve the system capacity, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is proposed as a candidate for multiple access schemes for future cellular networks. Our main aim is to maximize the long-term objective function under AoI, NOMA, and resource capacity constraints using stochastic optimization. To overcome the complexities and unknown dynamics of the network parameters (e.g., wireless channel and interference), we apply the concept of reinforcement learning and implement a deep Q-network (DQN). Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework and analyze different parameters impact on network performance. Based on the results, our proposed reward function converges fast with negligible loss value. In our scheme, the requested content is fetched directly from the edge if it is cached in the storage of one of the base stations (BSs), and otherwise is fetched via the backhaul. Our scheme consists of two phases: 1. Caching phase where the contents are saved in the storage of the BSs, and 2. Delivery phase where the requested contents are delivered to users. We formulate a novel optimization problem over radio resources and content placement variables. We aim to minimize the network cost subject to quality-of-service (QoS), caching, subcarrier assignment, and power allocation constraints. By exploiting advanced optimization methods, such as alternative search method (ASM), Hungarian algorithm, successive convex approximation (SCA), we obtain an efficient sub-optimal solution of the optimization problem. Numerical results illustrate that our ergodic caching policy via the proposed resource management algorithm can achieve a considerable reduction on the total cost on average compared to the most popular caching and random caching policy. Moreover, our cooperative NOMA scheme outperforms orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of the delivery cost in general with an acceptable complexity increase.

To fend off network ossification and support high degrees of flexibility and various services, network virtualization and slicing are introduced for the next-generation wireless cellular networks. These two technologies allow diversifying attributes of the future inter-networking and time-varying workloads based resource management paradigms. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end (E2E) resource allocation framework for future networks considering radio and core network by leveraging network function virtualization (NFV). We aim to minimize the network cost defined based on the utilized energy and spectrum while providing E2E quality of service (QoS) for diverse services with stringent QoS requirements. This goal is realized by formulating a novel optimization problem which performs the power and spectrum allocation in radio, and service function chaining and scheduling in the NFV environment while guaranteeing the distinct QoS constraints of the requested services. The proposed optimization problem is mixed-integer non-linear programming, which is a non-convex and NP-hard problem. To solve it, we adopt an iterative algorithm with novel admission control and a greedy-based heuristic algorithm, which is shown to have a polynomial order of complexity with 13:66% global optimality gap on average for a small scaled network. To validate the proposed framework, simulation results are carried out by considering different values of the network parameters and topologies. Moreover, our proposed framework and solution algorithm are assessed and compared with the existing works. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed heuristic algorithm and framework outperforms the existing ones by 34% on average in cost reduction.

Massive connections and high data rate services are key players in 5G ecosystem and beyond. To satisfy the requirements of these types of services, non orthogonal multiple Access (NOMA) and 3-dimensional beam-forming (3DBF) can be exploited. In this paper, we devise a novel joint radio resource allocation and 3D multiple input single output (MISO) BF algorithm in NOMA-based heterogeneous networks (HetNets) at which our main aim is to maximize the profit of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). To this end, we consider multiple infrastructure providers (InPs) and MVNOs serving multiple users. Each InP has multiple access points as base stations (BSs) with specified spectrum and multi-beam antenna array in each transmitter that share its spectrum with users by employing NOMA. To realize this, we formulate a novel optimization problem at which the main aim is to maximize the revenue of MVNOs, subject to resource limitations and quality of service (QoS) constraints. Since our proposed optimization problem is non-convex, NP-hard and mathematically intractable, we transform it into a convex one by introducing a new optimization variable and converting the variables with adopting successive convex approximation. More importantly, the proposed solution is assessed and compared with the alternative search method and the optimal solution that is obtained with adopting the exhaustive search method. In addition, the proposed algorithm is studied from the computational complexity, convergence, and performance perspective. Our simulation results demonstrate that NOMA-3DBF has better performance and increases system throughput and revenue of MVNOs compared to orthogonal multiple access with 2DBF by approximately 64%. Especially, by exploiting 3DBF the revenue of MVNOs is improved by nearly 27% in contrast to 2DBF in a high order of antennas.
