We introduce an infinite group action on partition functions of WK type, meaning of the type of the partition function $Z^{\rm WK}$ in the famous result of Witten and Kontsevich expressing the partition function of $ψ$-class integrals on the compactified moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ as a $τ$-function for the Korteweg--de Vries hierarchy. Specifically, the group which acts is the group $\mathcal{G}$ of formal power series of one variable $\varphi(V)=V+O(V^2)$, with group law given by composition, acting in a suitable way on the infinite tuple of variables of the partition functions. In particular, any $\varphi \in \mathcal{G}$ sends the Witten--Kontsevich (WK) partition function $Z^{\rm WK}$ to a new partition function $Z^\varphi$, which we call the WK map** partition function associated to $\varphi$. We show that the genus zero part of $\log Z^\varphi$ is independent of $\varphi$ and give an explicit recursive description for its higher genus parts (loop equation), and as applications of this obtain relationships of the $ψ$-class integrals to Gaussian Unitary Ensemble and generalized Brézin--Gross--Witten correlators. In a different direction, we use $Z^\varphi$ to construct a new integrable hierarchy, which we call the WK map** hierarchy associated to $\varphi$. We show that this hierarchy is a bihamiltonian perturbation of the Riemann--Hopf hierarchy possessing a $τ$-structure, and conjecture that it is a universal object for all such perturbations. Similarly, for any $\varphi\in\mathcal{G}$, we define the Hodge map** partition function associated to $\varphi$, prove that it is integrable, and study its role in hamiltonian perturbations of the Riemann--Hopf hierarchy possessing a $τ$-structure. Finally, we establish a generalized Hodge--WK correspondence relating different Hodge map** partition functions.

We discuss a matrix of periodic holomorphic functions in the upper and lower half-plane which can be obtained from a factorization of an Andersen-Kashaev state integral of a knot complement with remarkable analytic and asymptotic properties that defines a ${\rm PSL}_2({\mathbb Z})$-cocycle on the space of matrix-valued piecewise analytic functions on the real numbers. We identify the corresponding cocycle with the one coming from the Kashaev invariant of a knot (and its matrix-valued extension) via the refined quantum modularity conjecture of [arXiv:2111.06645] and also relate the matrix-valued invariant with the 3D-index of Dimofte-Gaiotto-Gukov. The cocycle also has an analytic extendability property that leads to the notion of a matrix-valued holomorphic quantum modular form. This is a tale of several independent discoveries, both empirical and theoretical, all illustrated by the three simplest hyperbolic knots.

The last of these descriptions involves the holomorphic projection map. The paper also includes some general results on the theory of quasimodular forms on both cocompact and non-cocompact subgroups of $SL_2(\mathbb{R})$, as well as a slight sharpening of a theorem of Martin and Royer on Rankin-Cohen brackets of quasimodular forms

We consider the fourteen families $W$ of Calabi-Yau threefolds with one complex structure parameter and Picard-Fuchs equation of hypergeometric type, like the mirror of the quintic in $\mathbb{P}^4$. Mirror symmetry identifies the masses of even--dimensional D--branes of the mirror Calabi-Yau $M$ with four periods of the holomorphic $(3,0)$-form over a symplectic basis of $H_3(W,\mathbb{Z})$. It was discovered by Chad Schoen that the singular fiber at the conifold of the quintic gives rise to a Hecke eigenform of weight four under $Γ_0(25)$, whose Hecke eigenvalues are determined by the Hasse-Weil zeta function which can be obtained by counting points of that fiber over finite fields. Similar features are known for the thirteen other cases. In two cases we further find special regular points, so called rank two attractor points, where the Hasse-Weil zeta function gives rise to modular forms of weight four and two. We numerically identify entries of the period matrix at these special fibers as periods and quasiperiods of the associated modular forms. In one case we prove this by constructing a correspondence between the conifold fiber and a Kuga-Sato variety. We also comment on simpler applications to local Calabi-Yau threefolds.

A new kind of quantum Calogero model is proposed, based on a hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra. We formulate nonrelativistic quantum mechanics on the Minkowskian root space of the simplest rank-3 hyperbolic Lie algebra $AE_3$ with an inverse-square potential given by its real roots and reduce it to the unit future hyperboloid. By stereographic projection this defines a quantum mechanics on the Poincaré disk with a unique potential. Since the Weyl group of $AE_3$ is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ extension of the modular group PSL(2,$\mathbb{Z}_2$), the model is naturally formulated on the complex upper half plane, and its potential is a real modular function. We present and illustrate the relevant features of $AE_3$, give some approximations to the potential and rewrite it as an (almost everywhere convergent) Poincaré series. The standard Dunkl operators are constructed and investigated on Minkowski space and on the hyperboloid. In the former case find that their commutativity is obstructed by rank-2 subgroups of hyperbolic type (the simplest one given by the Fibonacci sequence), casting doubt on the integrability of the model. An appendix with Don Zagier investigates the computability of the potential. We foresee applications to cosmological billards and to quantum chaos.

These matrix invariants have a rich structure: (a) their $(σ_0,σ_1)$ entry, where $σ_0$ is the trivial and $σ_1$ the geometric representation, is the power series expansion of the Kashaev invariant of the knot around the root of unity ${\rm e}^{2π{\rm i} α}$ as an element of the Habiro ring, and the remaining entries belong to generalized Habiro rings of number fields; (b) the first column is given by the perturbative power series of Dimofte-Garoufalidis; (c) the columns of $\boldsymbolΦ$ are fundamental solutions of a linear $q$-difference equation; (d) the matrix defines an ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-cocycle $W_γ$ in matrix-valued functions on $\mathbb{Q}$ that conjecturally extends to a smooth function on $\mathbb{R}$ and even to holomorphic functions on suitable complex cut planes, lifting the factorially divergent series $\boldsymbolΦ(h)$ to actual functions. The two invariants $\boldsymbolΦ$ and $W_γ$ are related by a refined quantum modularity conjecture which we illustrate in detail for the three simplest hyperbolic knots, the $4_1$, $5_2$ and $(-2,3,7)$ pretzel knots. This paper has two sequels, one giving a different realization of our invariant as a matrix of convergent $q$-series with integer coefficients and the other studying its Habiro-like arithmetic properties in more depth.

We then express the extended nu-invariant of Crowley, Goette, and Nordström in terms of fixpoint and gluing contributions, which include different types of (generalised) Dedekind sums. The Glosten-Milgrom model describes a single asset market, where informed traders interact with a market maker, in the presence of noise traders. We derive an analogy between this financial model and a Szilárd information engine by {\em i)} showing that the optimal work extraction protocol in the latter coincides with the pricing strategy of the market maker in the former and {\em ii)} defining a market analogue of the physical temperature from the analysis of the distribution of market orders. Then we show that the expected gain of informed traders is bounded above by the product of this market temperature with the amount of information that informed traders have, in exact analogy with the corresponding formula for the maximal expected amount of work that can be extracted from a cycle of the information engine. This suggests that recent ideas from information thermodynamics may shed light on financial markets, and lead to generalised inequalities, in the spirit of the extended second law of thermodynamics.

In 1927 Pólya proved that the Riemann Hypothesis is equivalent to the hyperbolicity of Jensen polynomials for the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$ at its point of symmetry. This hyperbolicity has been proved for degrees $d\leq 3$. We obtain an asymptotic formula for the central derivatives $ζ^{(2n)}(1/2)$ that is accurate to all orders, which allows us to prove the hyperbolicity of a density $1$ subset of the Jensen polynomials of each degree. Moreover, we establish hyperbolicity for all $d\leq 8$. These results follow from a general theorem which models such polynomials by Hermite polynomials. In the case of the Riemann zeta function, this proves the GUE random matrix model prediction in derivative aspect. The general theorem also allows us to prove a conjecture of Chen, Jia, and Wang on the partition function.

The construction uses the cyclic quantum dilogarithm, and under the identification of the Bloch group of~$F$ with the $K$-group $K_3(F)$ gives \changed{(up to an unidentified invertible scalar)} a \changed{formula} for a certain abstract Chern class from~$K_3(F)$. The units we define are conjectured to coincide with numbers appearing in the quantum modularity conjecture for the Kashaev invariant of knots (which was the original motivation for our investigation), and also appear in the radial asymptotics of Nahm sums near roots of unity. This latter connection is used to prove Nahm's conjecture relating the modularity of certain $q$-hypergeometric series to the vanishing of the associated elements in the Bloch group of~$\overline{\mathbb Q}$.

Quasimodular forms were first studied in the context of counting torus coverings. Here we show that a weighted version of these coverings with Siegel-Veech weights also provides quasimodular forms. We apply this to prove conjectures of Eskin and Zorich on the large genus limits of Masur-Veech volumes and of Siegel-Veech constants.
In Part I we connect the geometric definition of Siegel-Veech constants both with a combinatorial counting problem and with intersection numbers on Hurwitz spaces. We introduce modified Siegel-Veech weights whose generating functions will later be shown to be quasimodular.
Parts II and III are devoted to the study of the quasimodularity of the generating functions arising from weighted counting of torus coverings. The starting point is the theorem of Bloch and Okounkov saying that q-brackets of shifted symmetric functions are quasimodular forms. In Part II we give an expression for their growth polynomials in terms of Gaussian integrals and use this to obtain a closed formula for the generating series of cumulants that is the basis for studying large genus asymptotics. In Part III we show that the even hook-length moments of partitions are shifted symmetric polynomials and prove a formula for the q-bracket of the product of such a hook-length moment with an arbitrary shifted symmetric polynomial. This formula proves quasimodularity also for the (-2)-nd hook-length moments by extrapolation, and implies the quasimodularity of the Siegel-Veech weighted counting functions.
Finally, in Part IV these results are used to give explicit generating functions for the volumes and Siegel-Veech constants in the case of the principal stratum of abelian differentials. To apply these exact formulas to the Eskin-Zorich conjectures we provide a general framework for computing the asymptotics of rapidly divergent power series.

Fuchsian groups with a modular embedding have the richest arithmetic properties among non-arithmetic Fuchsian groups. But they are very rare, all known examples being related either to triangle groups or to Teichmueller curves.
In Part I of this paper we study the arithmetic properties of the modular embedding and develop from scratch a theory of twisted modular forms for Fuchsian groups with a modular embedding, proving dimension formulas, coefficient growth estimates and differential equations.
In Part II we provide a modular proof for an Apery-like integrality statement for solutions of Picard-Fuchs equations. We illustrate the theory on a worked example, giving explicit Fourier expansions of twisted modular forms and the equation of a Teichmueller curve in a Hilbert modular surface.
In Part III we show that genus two Teichmueller curves are cut out in Hilbert modular surfaces by a product of theta derivatives. We rederive most of the known properties of those Teichmueller curves from this viewpoint, without using the theory of flat surfaces. As a consequence we give the modular embeddings for all genus two Teichmueller curves and prove that the Fourier developments of their twisted modular forms are algebraic up to one transcendental scaling constant. Moreover, we prove that Bainbridge's compactification of Hilbert modular surfaces is toroidal. The strategy to compactify can be expressed using continued fractions and resembles Hirzebruch's in form, but every detail is different.

We show that the meromorphic Jacobi form that counts the quarter-BPS states in N=4 string theories can be canonically decomposed as a sum of a mock Jacobi form and an Appell-Lerch sum. The quantum degeneracies of single-centered black holes are Fourier coefficients of this mock Jacobi form, while the Appell-Lerch sum captures the degeneracies of multi-centered black holes which decay upon wall-crossing. The completion of the mock Jacobi form restores the modular symmetries expected from $AdS_3/CFT_2$ holography but has a holomorphic anomaly reflecting the non-compactness of the microscopic CFT. For every positive integral value m of the magnetic charge invariant of the black hole, our analysis leads to a special mock Jacobi form of weight two and index m, which we characterize uniquely up to a Jacobi cusp form. This family of special forms and another closely related family of weight-one forms contain almost all the known mock modular forms including the mock theta functions of Ramanujan, the generating function of Hurwitz-Kronecker class numbers, the mock modular forms appearing in the Mathieu and Umbral moonshine, as well as an infinite number of new examples.

We develop several methods that allow us to compute all-loop partition functions in perturbative Chern-Simons theory with complex gauge group G_C, sometimes in multiple ways. In the background of a non-abelian irreducible flat connection, perturbative G_C invariants turn out to be interesting topological invariants, which are very different from finite type (Vassiliev) invariants obtained in a theory with compact gauge group G. We explore various aspects of these invariants and present an example where we compute them explicitly to high loop order. We also introduce a notion of "arithmetic TQFT" and conjecture (with supporting numerical evidence) that SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory is an example of such a theory.

We examine crossing probabilities and free energies for conformally invariant critical 2-D systems in rectangular geometries, derived via conformal field theory and Stochastic Löwner Evolution methods. These quantities are shown to exhibit interesting modular behavior, although the physical meaning of modular transformations in this context is not clear. We show that in many cases these functions are completely characterized by very simple transformation properties. In particular, Cardy's function for the percolation crossing probability (including the conformal dimension 1/3), follows from a simple modular argument. A new type of "higher-order modular form" arises and its properties are discussed briefly.

These functions give a basis for L_2 on the modular surface Gamma\H, with the usual trigonometric waveforms on the torus R^2/Z^2, which are also (for this surface) both the Fourier building blocks for L_2 and eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. Although therefore very basic objects, Maass forms nevertheless still remain mysteriously elusive fifty years after their discovery; in particular, no explicit construction exists for any of these functions for the full modular group. The basic information about them (e.g. their existence and the density of the eigenvalues) comes mostly from the Selberg trace formula: the rest is conjectural with support from extensive numerical computations.

We find an analytic solution of the Bethe Ansatz equations (BAE) for the special case of a finite XXZ spin chain with free boundary conditions and with a complex surface field which provides for $U_q(sl(2))$ symmetry of the Hamiltonian. More precisely, we find one nontrivial solution, corresponding to the ground state of the system with anisotropy parameter $Δ= {1/2}$ corresponding to $q^3 = -1$. With a view to establishing an exact representation of the ground state of the finite size XXZ spin chain in terms of elementary functions, we concentrate on the crossing-parameter $η$ dependence around $η=π/3$ for which there is a known solution. The approach taken involves the use of a physical solution $Q$ of Baxter's t-Q equation, corresponding to the ground state, as well as a non-physical solution $P$ of the same equation. The calculation of $P$ and then of the ground state derivative is covered. Possible applications of this derivative to the theory of percolation have yet to be investigated. As far as the finite XXZ spin chain with periodic boundary conditions is concerned, we find a similar solution for an assymetric case which corresponds to the 6-vertex model with a special magnetic field. For this case we find the analytic value of the ``magnetic moment'' of the system in the corresponding state.

We give a formula for this difference in terms of a set of basic classes, expressed in a universal formula involving modular forms. The leading terms coincide with the formulas of Kronheimer and Mrowka in the simple type case. The basic classes are related to the Seiberg Witten invariants. The proof of these results is based on the conjecture of Kotschick and Morgan on the structure of the wall-crossing terms. We relate the problem to new theta functions for indefinite lattices.
