Abstract:
We provide a first principles derivation of the microscopic entropy of a very general class of supersymmetric, rotating and accelerating black holes in AdS$_4$. This is achieved by analysing the large-$N$ limit of the spindle index and completes the construction of the first example of a holographic duality involving supersymmetric field theories defined on orbifolds with conical singularities.

In a previous paper two of us (D.M. and A.Z.) proposed that a vast class of gravitational extremization problems in holography can be formulated in terms of the equivariant volume of the internal geometry, or of the cone over it. We substantiate this claim by analysing supergravity solutions corresponding to branes partially or totally wrapped on a four-dimensional orbifold, both in M-theory as well as in type II supergravities. We show that our approach recovers the relevant gravitational central charges/free energies of several known supergravity solutions and can be used to compute these also for solutions that are not known explicitly. Moreover, we demonstrate the validity of previously conjectured gravitational block formulas for M5 and D4 branes. In the case of M5 branes we make contact with a recent approach based on localization of equivariant forms, constructed with Killing spinor bilinears.

We discuss the theory of equivariant localization focussing on applications relevant for holography. We consider geometries comprising compact and non-compact toric orbifolds, as well as more general non-compact toric Calabi-Yau singularities. A key object in our constructions is the equivariant volume, for which we describe two methods of evaluation: the Berline-Vergne fixed-point formula and the Molien-Weyl formula, supplemented by the Jeffrey-Kirwan prescription. We present two applications in supersymmetric field theories. Firstly, we describe a method for integrating the anomaly polynomial of SCFTs on compact toric orbifolds. Secondly, we discuss equivariant orbifold indices that are expected to play a key role in the computation of supersymmetric partition functions. In the context of supergravity, we propose that the equivariant volume can be used to characterise universally the geometry of a large class of supersymmetric solutions. As an illustration, we employ equivariant localization to prove the factorization in gravitational blocks of various supergravity free energies, recovering previous results as well as obtaining generalizations.

We study the large $N$ limit of the refined topologically twisted index of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ gauge theories with a holographic dual, which is relevant for counting the number of microstates of rotating, magnetically charged and twisted AdS$_4$ black holes. As a difference with previous computations, we perform a direct saddle point analysis of the relevant matrix model. Among other things we explicitly identify the distribution of gauge magnetic fluxes that contributes at large $N$. The index exhibits a large $N$ factorized form in agreement with the supergravity expectations based on gravitational blocks and correctly reproduces the entropy of magnetically charged rotating AdS$_4 \times S^7$ black holes.

We consider partition functions on manifolds of the form $\mathcal{M}= \mathcal{M}_3 \times S^2_ε$, where $ε$ is an equivariant parameter for rotation. We show that, when $\mathcal{M}_3$ is a squashed three-sphere, the large $N$ partition functions can be obtained by gluing elementary blocks associated with simple physical quantities. The same is true for various observables of the theories on $\mathcal{M}_3=Σ_\mathfrak{g} \times S^1$, where $Σ_\mathfrak{g}$ is a Riemann surface of genus $\mathfrak{g}$, and, with a natural assumption on the form of the saddle point, also for the partition function, corresponding to either the topologically twisted index or a mixed one. This generalizes results in three and four dimensions and correctly reproduces the entropy of known black objects in AdS$_6 \times_{w} S^4$ and AdS$_7\times S^4$. We also provide the supersymmetric background and explicitly perform localization for the mixed index on $Σ_\mathfrak{g} \times S^1 \times S^2_ε$, filling a gap in the literature.

The large $N$ limit of the four-dimensional superconformal index was computed and successfully compared to the entropy of a class of AdS$_5$ black holes only in the particular case of equal angular momenta. Using the Bethe Ansatz formulation, we compute the index at large $N$ with arbitrary chemical potentials for all charges and angular momenta, for general $\mathcal{N}=1$ four-dimensional conformal theories with a holographic dual. We conjecture and bring some evidence that a particular universal contribution to the sum over Bethe vacua dominates the index at large $N$. For $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, this contribution correctly leads to the entropy of BPS Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_5 \times S^5$ for arbitrary values of the conserved charges, thus completing the microscopic derivation of their microstates. We also consider theories dual to AdS$_5 \times \mathrm{SE}_5$, where SE$_5$ is a Sasaki-Einstein manifold. We first check our results against the so-called universal black hole. We then explicitly construct the near-horizon geometry of BPS Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_5 \times T^{1,1}$, charged under the baryonic symmetry of the conifold theory and with equal angular momenta. We compute the entropy of these black holes using the attractor mechanism and find complete agreement with the field theory predictions.

This is done by gluing gravitational blocks, basic building blocks that are directly inspired by the holomorphic blocks appearing in the factorization of supersymmetric partition functions in three and four dimensions. We also provide an explicit realization of the attractor mechanism by identifying the values of the scalar fields at the horizon with the critical points of the entropy functional. We give examples based on dyonic rotating black holes with a twist in AdS$_4\times S^7$, rotating black strings in AdS$_5\times S^5$, dyonic Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_4\times S^7$ and Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_5\times S^5$. In particular, our entropy functional extends existing results by adding rotation to the twisted black holes in AdS$_4$ and by adding flavor magnetic charges for the Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_4$. We also discuss generalizations to higher-dimensional black objects.

The entropy of a class of asymptotically AdS$_4$ magnetically charged BPS black holes can be obtained by extremizing the topologically twisted index of the dual three-dimensional field theory. This principle is known as $\mathcal{I}$-extremization. A gravitational dual of $\mathcal{I}$-extremization for a class of theories obtained by twisted compactifications of M2-branes living at a Calabi-Yau four-fold has been recently proposed. In this paper we investigate the relation between the two extremization principles. We show that the two extremization procedures are equivalent for theories without baryonic symmetries, which include ABJM and the theory dual to the non-toric Sasaki-Einstein manifold $V^{5,2}$. We then consider a class of quivers dual to M2-branes at toric Calabi-Yau four-folds for which the $\mathcal{I}$-functional can be computed in the large $N$ limit, and depends on three mesonic fluxes. We propose a gravitational dual for this construction, that we call mesonic twist, and we show that the gravitational extremization problem and $\mathcal{I}$-extremization are equivalent. We comment on more general cases.

The gravitational dual of $c$-extremization for a class of $(0,2)$ two-dimensional theories obtained by twisted compactifications of D3-brane gauge theories living at a toric Calabi-Yau three-fold has been recently proposed. The equivalence of this construction with $c$-extremization has been checked in various examples and holds also off-shell. In this note we prove that such equivalence holds for an arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau. We do it by generalizing the proof of the equivalence between $a$-maximization and volume minimization for four-dimensional toric quivers. By an explicit parameterization of the R-charges we map the trial right-moving central charge $c_r$ into the off-shell functional to be extremized in gravity. We also observe that the similar construction for M2-branes on $\mathbb{C}^4$ is equivalent to the $\mathcal{I}$-extremization principle that leads to the microscopic counting for the entropy of magnetically charged black holes in AdS$_4\times S^7$. Also this equivalence holds off-shell.

The result can be expressed as a contour integral of the product of copies of the K-theoretic Nekrasov's partition function, summed over gauge magnetic fluxes. The formula generalizes to five dimensions the topologically twisted index of three- and four-dimensional field theories. We analyze the large $N$ limit of the partition function and some related quantities for two theories: $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM and the $\mathrm{USp}(2N)$ theory with $N_f$ flavors and an antisymmetric matter field. For $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1 \times S^1$, which can be easily generalized to $Σ_{\mathfrak{g}_2} \times Σ_{\mathfrak{g}_1} \times S^1$, we conjecture the form of the relevant saddle point at large $N$. The resulting partition function for $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM scales as $N^3$ and is in perfect agreement with the holographic results for domain walls in AdS$_7 \times S^4$. The large $N$ partition function for the $\mathrm{USp}(2N)$ theory scales as $N^{5/2}$ and gives a prediction for the entropy of a class of magnetically charged black holes in massive type IIA supergravity.

We present a formula for the Hilbert series that counts gauge invariant chiral operators in a large class of 3d ${\cal N} \ge 2$ Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories. The formula counts 't Hooft monopole operators dressed by gauge invariants of a residual gauge theory of massless fields in the monopole background. We provide a general formula for the case of abelian theories, where nonperturbative corrections are absent, and consider a few examples of nonabelian theories where nonperturbative corrections are well understood. We also analyze in detail nonabelian ABJ(M) theories as well as worldvolume theories of M2-branes probing Calabi-Yau fourfold and hyperKähler twofold singularities with ${\cal N} = 2$ and ${\cal N} = 3$ supersymmetry.

We present a few simple Abelian and non-Abelian examples, including new tests of non-perturbative dualities. We also show that the large N partition function of ABJM theory on $Σ_g \times S^1$ reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of BPS black holes in AdS$_4$ whose horizon has $Σ_g$ topology.

We provide general formulae for the topologically twisted index of a general three-dimensional ${\cal N}\geq 2$ gauge theory with an M-theory or massive type IIA dual in the large $N$ limit. The index is defined as the supersymmetric path integral of the theory on $S^2\times S^1$ in the presence of background magnetic fluxes for the R- and global symmetries and it is conjectured to reproduce the entropy of magnetically charged static BPS AdS$_4$ black holes. For a class of theories with an M-theory dual, we show that the logarithm of the index scales indeed as $N^{3/2}$ (and $N^{5/3}$ in the massive type IIA case). We find an intriguing relation with the (apparently unrelated) large $N$ limit of the partition function on $S^3$. We also provide a universal formula for extracting the index from the large $N$ partition function on $S^3$ and its derivatives and point out its analogy with the attractor mechanism for AdS black holes.

We focus on a class of asymptotically AdS$_4$ static black holes preserving two real supercharges which are dual to a topologically twisted deformation of the ABJM theory. We evaluate in the large $N$ limit the topologically twisted index of the ABJM theory and we show that it correctly reproduces the entropy of the AdS$_4$ black holes. An extremization of the index with respect to a set of chemical potentials is required. We interpret it as the selection of the exact R-symmetry of the superconformal quantum mechanics describing the horizon of the black hole.

We provide a general formula for the partition function of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories placed on $S^2 \times S^1$ with a topological twist along $S^2$, which can be interpreted as an index for chiral states of the theories immersed in background magnetic fields. The result is expressed as a sum over magnetic fluxes of the residues of a meromorphic form which is a function of the scalar zero-modes. The partition function depends on a collection of background magnetic fluxes and fugacities for the global symmetries. We illustrate our formula in many examples of 3d Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories with matter, including Aharony and Giveon-Kutasov dualities. Finally, our formula generalizes to $Ω$-backgrounds, as well as two-dimensional theories on $S^2$ and four-dimensional theories on $S^2 \times T^2$. In particular this provides an alternative way to compute genus-zero A-model topological amplitudes and Gromov-Witten invariants.

We mainly consider the case G=SU(N) but some interesting results are also given for orthogonal and symplectic groups.

The result is expressed in terms of a class of symmetric functions, the Hall-Littlewood polynomials. As expected from mirror symmetry, our results agree at genus zero with the superconformal index prediction for the Higgs branch Hilbert series of the Sicilian theories and extend it to higher genus. In the $A_1$ case at genus zero, we also evaluate the Coulomb branch Hilbert series of the Sicilian theory itself, showing that it only depends on the number of external legs.

There has been a recent progress in understanding the chiral ring of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal gauge theories by explicitly constructing an exact generating function (Hilbert series) counting BPS operators on the Coulomb branch. In this paper we introduce Coulomb branch Hilbert series in the presence of background magnetic charges for flavor symmetries, which are useful for computing the Hilbert series of more general theories through gluing techniques. We find a simple formula of the Hilbert series with background magnetic charges for $T_ρ(G)$ theories in terms of Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Here $G$ is a classical group and $ρ$ is a certain partition related to the dual group of $G$. The Hilbert series for vanishing background magnetic charges show that Coulomb branches of $T_ρ(G)$ theories are complete intersections. We also demonstrate that mirror symmetry maps background magnetic charges to baryonic charges.

This paper addresses a long standing problem - to identify the chiral ring and moduli space (i.e. as an algebraic variety) on the Coulomb branch of an N = 4 superconformal field theory in 2+1 dimensions. Previous techniques involved a computation of the metric on the moduli space and/or mirror symmetry. These methods are limited to sufficiently small moduli spaces, with enough symmetry, or to Higgs branches of sufficiently small gauge theories. We introduce a simple formula for the Hilbert series of the Coulomb branch, which applies to any good or ugly three-dimensional N = 4 gauge theory. The formula counts monopole operators which are dressed by classical operators, the Casimir invariants of the residual gauge group that is left unbroken by the magnetic flux. We apply our formula to several classes of gauge theories. Along the way we make various tests of mirror symmetry, successfully comparing the Hilbert series of the Coulomb branch with the Hilbert series of the Higgs branch of the mirror theory.

We study N=2 superconformal theories on Euclidean and Lorentzian four-manifolds with a view toward applications to holography and localization. The conditions for supersymmetry are equivalent to a set of differential constraints including a "generalised" conformal Killing spinor equation depending on various background fields. We solve these equations in the general case and give very explicit expressions for the auxiliary fields that we need to turn on to preserve some supersymmetry. As opposed to what has been observed for the N=1 case, the conditions for unbroken supersymmetry turn out to be almost independent of the signature of spacetime, with the exception of few degenerate cases including the topological twist. Generically, the only geometrical constraint coming from supersymmetry is the existence of a conformal Killing vector on the manifold, all other constraints determine the background auxiliary fields.

We derive the flow equations for a general electrically gauged theory where the gauge group is Abelian and, restricting them to the fixed points, we derive the gauged supergravity analogue of the attractor equations for theories coupled to hypermultiplets. The particular models we analyze are consistent truncations of M-theory on certain Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds. We study the space of horizon solutions of the form $AdS_2\times Σ_g$ with both electric and magnetic charges and find a four-dimensional solution space when the theory arises from a reduction on $Q^{111}$. For other $SE_7$ reductions, the solutions space is a subspace of this. We construct explicit examples of spherically symmetric black holes numerically.

As in the Euclidean case, preserved supersymmetry for asymptotically locally AdS solutions implies the existence of a (charged) "conformal Killing spinor" on the boundary. We find that such spinors exist whenever there is a conformal Killing vector which is null or timelike. We match these results with expectations from supersymmetric four-dimensional asymptotically AdS black holes. In particular, BPS bulk solutions in global AdS are known to fall in two classes, depending on their graviphoton magnetic charge, and we reproduce this dichotomy from the boundary perspective. We finish by sketching a proposal to find the dual superconformal quantum mechanics on the horizon of the magnetic black holes.

Differently from the Euclidean case, we show that the existence of such spinors is equivalent to the existence of a null conformal Killing vector. For a supersymmetric field theory with an R-symmetry, this vector field is further restricted to be Killing. Understanding the strong coupling limit of massive type IIA string theory is a longstanding problem. We argue that perhaps this problem does not exist; namely, there may be no strongly coupled solutions of the massive theory. We show explicitly that massive type IIA string theory can never be strongly coupled in a weakly curved region of space-time. We illustrate our general claim with two classes of massive solutions in AdS4xCP3: one, previously known, with N = 1 supersymmetry, and a new one with N = 2 supersymmetry. Both solutions are dual to d = 3 Chern-Simons-matter theories. In both these massive examples, as the rank N of the gauge group is increased, the dilaton initially increases in the same way as in the corresponding massless case; before it can reach the M-theory regime, however, it enters a second regime, in which the dilaton decreases even as N increases. In the N = 2 case, we find supersymmetry-preserving gauge-invariant monopole operators whose mass is independent of N. This predicts the existence of branes which stay light even when the dilaton decreases. We show that, on the gravity side, these states originate from D2-D0 bound states wrap** the vanishing two-cycle of a conifold singularity that develops at large N.

The family of solutions have SU(3) times SU(3) structure and isometry SU(3) times U(1)^2. They are conjectured to be dual to three-dimensional N=2 Chern-Simons theories with generic Chern-Simons couplings and gauge group ranks.

Abstract:
We analyze the action of Toric (Seiberg) duality on the combined mesonic and baryonic moduli space of quiver gauge theories obtained from D3 branes at Calabi-Yau singularities. We analyze in particular the structure of the master space, the complete moduli space for one brane, for different toric phases of a given singularity. We show that the Hilbert Series for the largest component of the master space of different phases is the same, when refined with all the non anomalous charges. This reflects the fact that the quiver gauge theories associated with different phases are related by Seiberg duality when the number of branes is greater than one.

Partition functions for M2-brane theories in various backgrounds are computed. We consider in particular configurations of membranes at orbifold singularities preserving N=5 or N=6 supersymmetry. The worldvolume membrane theory for some of these configurations has been recently constructed in terms of N=6 Chern-Simons theories. The worldvolume membrane theory for some of these configurations has been recently constructed in terms of N=6 Chern-Simons theories. The detailed structure of the partition functions as well as their transformation rules under the R-symmetry are explicitly computed using the Plethystic Programme.

Supersymmetric gauge theories have an important but perhaps under-appreciated notion of a master space, which controls the full moduli space. For world-volume theories of D-branes probing a Calabi-Yau singularity X the situation is particularly illustrative. In the case of one physical brane, the master space F is the space of F-terms and a particular quotient thereof is X itself. We study various properties of F which encode such physical quantities as Higgsing, BPS spectra, hidden global symmetries, etc. Using the plethystic program we also discuss what happens at higher number N of branes. This letter is a summary and some extensions of the key points of a longer companion paper arXiv:0801.1585.

The full moduli space M of a class of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories is studied. For gauge theories living on a stack of D3-branes at Calabi-Yau singularities X, M is a combination of the mesonic and baryonic branches, the former being the symmetric product of X. In consonance with the mathematical literature, the single brane moduli space is called the master space F. Illustrating with a host of explicit examples, we exhibit many algebro-geometric properties of the master space such as when F is toric Calabi-Yau, behaviour of its Hilbert series, its irreducible components and its symmetries. In conjunction with the plethystic programme, we investigate the counting of BPS gauge invariants, baryonic and mesonic, using the geometry of F and show how its refined Hilbert series not only engenders the generating functions for the counting but also beautifully encode ``hidden'' global symmetries of the gauge theory which manifest themselves as symmetries of the complete moduli space M for arbitrary number of branes.
