We consider how the absence of thermalisation affects the classical Coulomb blockade regime in quantum dots. By solving the quantum kinetic equation in the experimentally accessible regime when the dot has two relevant occupation states, we calculate the current-voltage characteristics for arbitrary coupling to the leads. If the couplings are strongly asymmetric, we have found that the Coulomb staircase practically reduces to the first step independent of the charging energy when the latter is larger than the Fermi energy, while the standard thermalised results are recovered in the opposite case. If the couplings are of the same order, the absence of thermalisation has a new, striking signature - a robust additional peak in the differential conductance.

We investigate non-equilibrium transport properties of a quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime under the condition of negligible inelastic scattering during the dwelling time of the electrons in the dot. Using the quantum kinetic equation we show that the absence of thermalization leads to a double-step in the distribution function of electrons on the dot, provided that it is symmetrically coupled to the leads. This drastically changes nonlinear transport through the dot resulting in an additional (compared to the thermalized case) jump in the conductance at voltages close to the charging energy, which could serve as an experimental manifestation of the absence of thermalization.

We investigate the Coulomb blockade in quantum dots asymmetrically coupled to the leads for an arbitrary voltage bias focusing on the regime where electrons do not thermalise during their dwell time in the dot. By solving the quantum kinetic equation, we show that the current-voltage characteristics are crucially dependent on the ratio of the Fermi energy to charging energy on the dot. In the standard regime when the Fermi energy is large, there is a Coulomb staircase which is practically the same as in the thermalised regime. In the opposite case of the large charging energy, we identify a new regime in which only one step is left in the staircase, and we anticipate experimental confirmation of this finding.

Calculating the scaling dimensions of the two most relevant perturbations, charge-density wave, and superconducting inter-wire couplings, but excluding the inter-wire single-particle hybridization, we find a finite stability region for the SLL. It emerges due to the inter-wire forward scattering interaction, and remains stable up to a significant asymmetry between alternating couplings.

We study stability of multiple conducting edge states in a topological insulator against all multi-particle perturbations allowed by the time-reversal symmetry. We model a system as a multi-channel Luttinger liquid, where the number of channels equals the number of Kramers doublets at the edge. We show that in the clean system with N Kramers doublets there always exist relevant perturbations (either of superconducting or charge density wave character) which always open (N-1) gaps. In the charge density wave regime, (N-1) edge states get localised. The single remaining gapless mode describes sliding of 'Wigner crystal' like structure. Disorder introduces multi-particle backscattering processes. While the single-particle backscattering turns out to be irrelevant, the two-particle process may localise this gapless, in translation invariant system, mode. Our main result is that an interacting system with N Kramers doublets at the edge may be either a trivial insulator or a topological insulator for N=1 or 2, depending on density-density repulsion parameters whereas any higher number N>2 of doublets gets fully localised by the disorder pinning irrespective of the parity issue.

We analyse whether physically justifiable (reasonable) inter-wire interactions, i.e. either the screened Coulomb or "Coulomb-blockade" type interactions, stabilise the SLL phase. Calculating the scaling dimensions of the most relevant perturbations (the inter-wire single-particle hybridisation, charge-density wave, and superconducting inter-wire couplings), we find that their combination always destroys the SLL phase for the repulsive intra-wire interaction. However, suppressing the inter-wire tunnelling (when the charge-density wave is the only remaining perturbation), one can observe a stability region emerging due to the inter-wire interaction.

We derive renormalisation group equations which are perturbative in disorder but nonperturbative in interaction. In the vicinity of the simultaneous phase transition in all channels, these equations become a set of coupled Berezinskii--Kosterlitz--Thouless equations, which we analyze within two models: an array of identical wires and a two-channel model with distinct channels. We show that a competition between disorder and interaction results in a variety of phases, expected to be observable at intermediate temperatures where the interaction and disorder are relevant but weak hybridization and the charge-density wave interaction may be ignored.

We devise an approach to the calculation of scaling dimensions of generic operators describing scattering within multi-channel Luttinger liquid. The local impurity scattering in an arbitrary configuration of conducting and insulating channels is investigated and the problem is reduced to a single algebraic matrix equation. In particular, the solution to this equation is found for a finite array of chains described by Luttinger liquid models. It is found that for a weak inter-chain hybridisation and intra-channel electron-electron attraction the edge wires are robust against disorder whereas bulk wires, on contrary, become insulating. Thus, the edge state may exist in a finite sliding Luttinger liquid without time-reversal symmetry breaking (quantum Hall systems) or spin-orbit interaction (topological insulators).

We investigate the stability of conducting and insulating phases in multichannel Luttinger liquids with respect to embedding a single impurity. We devise a general approach for finding critical exponents of the conductance in the limits of both weak and strong scattering. In contrast to the one-channel Luttinger liquid, the system state in certain parametric regions depends on the scattering strength which results in the emergence of a bistability. Focusing on the two-channel liquid, the method developed here enables us to provide a generic analysis of phase boundaries governed by the most relevant (i.e. not necessarily single-particle) scattering mechanism. The present approach is applicable to channels of different nature as in fermion-boson mixtures, or to identical ones as on the opposite edges of a topological insulator. We show that interaction per se cannot provide protection in particular case of topological insulators realized in narrow Hall bars.

The Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect is widely regarded as the quintessential quantum interference phenomenon in optics. In this work we examine how nonlinearity can smear statistical photon bunching in the HOM interferometer. We model both the nonlinearity and a balanced beam splitter with a single two-level system and calculate a finite probability of anti-bunching arising in this geometry. We thus argue that the presence of such nonlinearity would reduce the visibility in the standard HOM setup, offering some explanation for the diminution of the HOM visibility observed in many experiments. We use the same model to show that the nonlinearity affects a resonant two-photon propagation through a two-level impurity in a waveguide due to a "weak photon blockade" caused by the impossibility of double-occupancy and argue that this effect might be stronger for multi-photon propagation.

We study a Luttinger Liquid (LL) coupled to a generic environment consisting of bosonic modes with arbitrary density-density and current-current interactions. The LL can be either in the conducting phase and perturbed by a weak scatterer or in the insulating phase and perturbed by a weak link. The environment modes can also be scattered by the imperfection in the system with arbitrary transmission and reflection amplitudes. We present a general method of calculating correlation functions under the presence of the environment and prove the duality of exponents describing the scaling of the weak scatterer and of the weak link. This duality holds true for a broad class of models and is sensitive to neither interaction nor environmental modes details, thus it shows up as the universal property. It ensures that the environment cannot generate new stable fixed points of the RG flow. Thus, the LL always flows toward either conducting or insulating phase. Phases are separated by a sharp boundary which is shifted by the influence of the environment. Our results are relevant, for example, for low-energy transport in (i) an interacting quantum wire or a carbon nanotube where the electrons are coupled to the acoustic phonons scattered by the lattice defect; (ii) a mixture of interacting fermionic and bosonic cold atoms where the bosonic modes are scattered due to an abrupt local change of the interaction, (iii) mesoscopic electric circuits.

We find that the duality relation, $Δ_{ws}Δ_{wl}=1 $, between scaling dimensions of the electron backscattering in the WS and WL limits, established for the standard LL, holds in the presence of the additional coupling for an arbitrary fixed strength of boson scattering from the impurity. This means that at low temperatures such a system remains either an ideal insulator or an ideal metal, regardless of the scattering strength. On the other hand, when fermion and boson scattering from the impurity are correlated, the system has a rich phase diagram that includes a metal-insulator transition at some intermediate values of the scattering.

In studies of complex heterogeneous networks, particularly of the Internet, significant attention was paid to analyzing network failures caused by hardware faults or overload, where the network reaction was modeled as rerouting of traffic away from failed or congested elements. Here we model another type of the network reaction to congestion -- a sharp reduction of the input traffic rate through congested routes which occurs on much shorter time scales. We consider the onset of congestion in the Internet where local mismatch between demand and capacity results in traffic losses and show that it can be described as a phase transition characterized by strong non-Gaussian loss fluctuations at a mesoscopic time scale. The fluctuations, caused by noise in input traffic, are exacerbated by the heterogeneous nature of the network manifested in a scale-free load distribution. They result in the network strongly overreacting to the first signs of congestion by significantly reducing input traffic along the communication paths where congestion is utterly negligible.

The major contribution to decoherence of a double quantum dot or a Josephson junction charge qubit comes from the electrostatic coupling to fluctuating background charges hybridized with the conduction electrons in the reservoir. However, estimations according to previously developed theories show that finding a sufficient number of effective fluctuators in a realistic experimental layout is quite improbable. We show that this paradox is resolved by allowing for a short-range Coulomb interaction of the fluctuators with the electrons in the reservoir. This dramatically enhances both the number of effective fluctuators and their contribution to decoherence, resulting in the most dangerous decoherence mechanism for charge qubits.

Using a one-loop renormalization group approach valid for a weak electron-electron interaction, we have calculated a transmission coefficient through the wire, $\mathcal{T}(\varepsilon)$, and a local density of states, $ν(\varepsilon)$ at low energies $\varepsilon $. In this lectures, we have described some essential features of loss of coherence by a qubit coupled to the environment. We have first presented well known semiclassical arguments that relate both decoherence and relaxation to the environmental noise. Then we have shown that models with pure decoherence (but no relaxation in qubit states) can be exactly solvable. As an example, we have treated in detail the model of fluctuating background charges which is believed to describe one of the most important channels for decoherence for the charge Josephson junction qubit. We have shown that the decoherence rate saturates at `high' temperatures while becoming linear in T at low temperatures and showing in all regimes a non-monotonic behaviour as a function of the coupling of the qubit to the fluctuating background charges. We have also considered, albeit only perturbatively, the qubit relaxation by the background charges and demonstrated that a quasi-linear behaviour of the spectral density of noise deduced from the measurements of the relaxation rate can be qualitatively explained.

We suggest a model for data losses in a single node of a packet-switched network (like the Internet) which reduces to one-dimensional discrete random walks with unusual boundary conditions. The model shows critical behavior with an abrupt transition from exponentially small to finite losses as the data arrival rate increases. The critical point is characterized by strong fluctuations of the loss rate. Although we consider the packet arrival being a Markovian process, the loss rate exhibits non-Markovian power-law correlations in time at the critical point.

This allows us to reproduce results (well known from the bosonization techniques) for the suppression of the electron local density of states (LDoS) at the position of the impurity and for the Friedel oscillations at finite temperature. In addition, we have extracted from the exact representation an analytic dependence of LDoS on the distance from the impurity and shown how it crosses over to that for the pure LL.

We show that under certain controlled approximations this model is reduced to the Bose-Hubbard (or ``dirty-boson'') model with renormalized coupling constants. We obtain a more general effective action (which is still simpler than the full NLSM action) which can be applied in the region of parameters where the reduction to the Bose-Hubbard model is not justified. This action may lead to a different picture of the superconductor-insulator transition in 2D systems.

The main distinction from existing models lies in the fact that the saddle point equation is solved non-perturbatively in the superconducting pairing field. It allows one to use the model both in the vicinity of the metal-superconductor transition and well below its critical temperature with full account for the self-consistency conditions. We show that the model reproduces a set of known results in different limiting cases, and apply it for a self-consistent description of the proximity effect at the superconductor-metal interface.

We present first results for the transmittance, T, through a 1D disordered system with an imaginary vector potential, ih, which provide a new analytical criterion for a delocalization transition in the model. It turns out that the position of the critical curve on the complex energy plane (i.e. the curve where an exponential decay of <T> is changed by a power-law one) is different from that obtained previously from the complex energy spectra. Corresponding curves for <T^n> or <ln T> are also different. This happens because of different scales of the exponential decay of one-particle Green's functions (GF) defining the spectra and many-particle GF governing transport characteristics, and reflects higher-order correlations in localized eigenstates of the non-Hermitian model.

In this limit, non-perturbative oscillatory contributions arise from a degenerate saddle-point manifold within this sigma model which corresponds to the replica-symmetry breaking. Moreover, we demonstrate that in the unitary case the very same results can be extracted from the well known exact integral representation for R_2(ω).

The level curvature distribution function is studied both analytically and numerically for the case of T-breaking perturbations over the orthogonal ensemble. The leading correction to the shape of the curvature distribution beyond the random matrix theory is calculated using the nonlinear supersymmetric sigma-model and compared to numerical simulations on the Anderson model. It is predicted analytically and confirmed numerically that the sign of the correction is different for T-breaking perturbations caused by a constant vector-potential equivalent to a phase twist in the boundary conditions, and those caused by a random magnetic field. In the former case it is shown using a nonperturbative approach that quasi-localized states in weakly disordered systems can cause the curvature distribution to be nonanalytic. In $2d$ systems the distribution function $P(K)$ has a branching point at K=0 that is related to the multifractality of the wave functions and thus should be a generic feature of all critical eigenstates. A relationship between the branching power and the multifractality exponent $d_{2}$ is suggested. Evidence of the branch-cut singularity is found in numerical simulations in $2d$ systems and at the Anderson transition point in $3d$ systems.

The level curvature distribution function is studied beyond the random matrix theory for the case of T-breaking perturbations over the orthogonal ensemble. The leading correction to the shape of the level curvature distribution is calculated using the nonlinear sigma-model. The sign of the correction depends on the presence or absence of the global gauge invariance and is different for perturbations caused by the constant vector-potential and by the random magnetic field. Scaling arguments are discussed that indicate on the qualitative difference in the level statistics in the dirty metal phase for space dimensionalities $d<4$ and $d>4$.

The transmissivity of a one-dimensional random system that is periodic on average is studied. It is shown that the transmission coefficient for frequencies corresponding to a gap in the band structure of the average periodic system increases with increasing disorder while the disorder is weak enough. This property is shown to be universal, independent of the type of fluctuations causing the randomness. In the case of strong disorder the transmission coefficient for frequencies in allowed bands is found to be a non monotonic function of the strength of the disorder. An explanation for the latter behavior is provided.
