Abstract:
A high precision measurement of the branching fraction of the decay $J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η$ is performed using $(10 087 \pm 44) \times 10^6$ $J/ψ$ events recorded by the {BESIII} detector at the {BEPCII} storage ring. The branching fractions of the two decays $J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to γγ)$ and $J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to π^+ π^- π^0)$ are measured individually to be…

The branching fractions of the two decays $J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to γγ)$ and $J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to π^+ π^- π^0)$ are measured individually to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to γγ)) = (1.480 \pm 0.001 \pm 0.024)\times\,10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to π^+ π^- π^0)) = (1.557 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.038)\times\,10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Both results are compatible within their uncorrelated systematic uncertainties. The combined result is $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η)=(1.495 \pm 0.001 \pm 0.023)\times\,10^{-3}$ where the first uncertainty is the combined statistical uncertainty and the second one the combined systematic uncertainty of both analyses, incorporating correlations between them. In addition, the $p \bar{p}$ threshold region is investigated for a potential threshold enhancement, and no evidence for one is observed.

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has led to its integration into various areas, especially with Large Language Models (LLMs) significantly enhancing capabilities in Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC). However, the complexity of AI systems has also exposed their vulnerabilities, necessitating robust methods for failure analysis (FA) and fault injection (FI) to ensure resilience and reliability. Despite the importance of these techniques, there lacks a comprehensive review of FA and FI methodologies in AI systems. This study fills this gap by presenting a detailed survey of existing FA and FI approaches across six layers of AI systems. We systematically analyze 160 papers and repositories to answer three research questions including (1) what are the prevalent failures in AI systems, (2) what types of faults can current FI tools simulate, (3) what gaps exist between the simulated faults and real-world failures. Our findings reveal a taxonomy of AI system failures, assess the capabilities of existing FI tools, and highlight discrepancies between real-world and simulated failures. Moreover, this survey contributes to the field by providing a framework for fault diagnosis, evaluating the state-of-the-art in FI, and identifying areas for improvement in FI techniques to enhance the resilience of AI systems.

The rapid development of multimodal large language models (MLLMs), such as GPT-4V, has led to significant advancements. However, these models still face challenges in medical multimodal capabilities due to limitations in the quantity and quality of medical vision-text data, stemming from data privacy concerns and high annotation costs. While pioneering approaches utilize PubMed's large-scale, de-identified medical image-text pairs to address these limitations, they still fall short due to inherent data noise. To tackle this, we refined medical image-text pairs from PubMed and employed MLLMs (GPT-4V) in an 'unblinded' capacity to denoise and reformat the data, resulting in the creation of the PubMedVision dataset with 1.3 million medical VQA samples. Our validation demonstrates that: (1) PubMedVision can significantly enhance the medical multimodal capabilities of current MLLMs, showing significant improvement in benchmarks including the MMMU Health & Medicine track; (2) manual checks by medical experts and empirical results validate the superior data quality of our dataset compared to other data construction methods. Using PubMedVision, we train a 34B medical MLLM HuatuoGPT-Vision, which shows superior performance in medical multimodal scenarios among open-source MLLMs.

For both measurements, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The branching fraction and form factor measurements are factors of 1.6 and 1.7 more precise than the previous world averages, respectively.

In modern wireless network architectures, such as O-RAN, artificial intelligence (AI)-based applications are deployed at intelligent controllers to carry out functionalities like scheduling or power control. The AI "apps" are selected on the basis of contextual information such as network conditions, topology, traffic statistics, and design goals. The map** between context and AI model parameters is ideally done in a zero-shot fashion via an automatic model selection (AMS) map** that leverages only contextual information without requiring any current data. This paper introduces a general methodology for the online optimization of AMS map**s. Optimizing an AMS map** is challenging, as it requires exposure to data collected from many different contexts. Therefore, if carried out online, this initial optimization phase would be extremely time consuming. A possible solution is to leverage a digital twin of the physical system to generate synthetic data from multiple simulated contexts. However, given that the simulator at the digital twin is imperfect, a direct use of simulated data for the optimization of the AMS map** would yield poor performance when tested in the real system. This paper proposes a novel method for the online optimization of AMS map** that corrects for the bias of the simulator by means of limited real data collected from the physical system. Experimental results for a graph neural network-based power control app demonstrate the significant advantages of the proposed approach.

This paper studies the problem of pre-training for small models, which is essential for many mobile devices. Current state-of-the-art methods on this problem transfer the representational knowledge of a large network (as a Teacher) into a smaller model (as a Student) using self-supervised distillation, improving the performance of the small model on downstream tasks. However, existing approaches are insufficient in extracting the crucial knowledge that is useful for discerning categories in downstream tasks during the distillation process. In this paper, for the first time, we introduce language guidance to the distillation process and propose a new method named Language-Guided Distillation (LGD) system, which uses category names of the target downstream task to help refine the knowledge transferred between the teacher and student. To this end, we utilize a pre-trained text encoder to extract semantic embeddings from language and construct a textual semantic space called Textual Semantics Bank (TSB). Furthermore, we design a Language-Guided Knowledge Aggregation (LGKA) module to construct the visual semantic space, also named Visual Semantics Bank (VSB). The task-related knowledge is transferred by driving a student encoder to mimic the similarity score distribution inferred by a teacher over TSB and VSB. Compared with other small models obtained by either ImageNet pre-training or self-supervised distillation, experiment results show that the distilled lightweight model using the proposed LGD method presents state-of-the-art performance and is validated on various downstream tasks, including classification, detection, and segmentation. We have made the code available at https://github.com/mZhenz/LGD.

Recently, 3D assets created via reconstruction and generation have matched the quality of manually crafted assets, highlighting their potential for replacement. However, this potential is largely unrealized because these assets always need to be converted to meshes for 3D industry applications, and the meshes produced by current mesh extraction methods are significantly inferior to Artist-Created Meshes (AMs), i.e., meshes created by human artists. Specifically, current mesh extraction methods rely on dense faces and ignore geometric features, leading to inefficiencies, complicated post-processing, and lower representation quality. To address these issues, we introduce MeshAnything, a model that treats mesh extraction as a generation problem, producing AMs aligned with specified shapes. By converting 3D assets in any 3D representation into AMs, MeshAnything can be integrated with various 3D asset production methods, thereby enhancing their application across the 3D industry. The architecture of MeshAnything comprises a VQ-VAE and a shape-conditioned decoder-only transformer. We first learn a mesh vocabulary using the VQ-VAE, then train the shape-conditioned decoder-only transformer on this vocabulary for shape-conditioned autoregressive mesh generation. Our extensive experiments show that our method generates AMs with hundreds of times fewer faces, significantly improving storage, rendering, and simulation efficiencies, while achieving precision comparable to previous methods.

The incidence and mortality rates of malignant tumors, such as acute leukemia, have risen significantly. Clinically, hospitals rely on cytological examination of peripheral blood and bone marrow smears to diagnose malignant tumors, with accurate blood cell counting being crucial. Existing automated methods face challenges such as low feature expression capability, poor interpretability, and redundant feature extraction when processing high-dimensional microimage data. We propose a novel fine-grained classification model, SCKansformer, for bone marrow blood cells, which addresses these challenges and enhances classification accuracy and efficiency. The model integrates the Kansformer Encoder, SCConv Encoder, and Global-Local Attention Encoder. The Kansformer Encoder replaces the traditional MLP layer with the KAN, improving nonlinear feature representation and interpretability. The SCConv Encoder, with its Spatial and Channel Reconstruction Units, enhances feature representation and reduces redundancy. The Global-Local Attention Encoder combines Multi-head Self-Attention with a Local Part module to capture both global and local features. We validated our model using the Bone Marrow Blood Cell Fine-Grained Classification Dataset (BMCD-FGCD), comprising over 10,000 samples and nearly 40 classifications, developed with a partner hospital. Comparative experiments on our private dataset, as well as the publicly available PBC and ALL-IDB datasets, demonstrate that SCKansformer outperforms both typical and advanced microcell classification methods across all datasets. Our source code and private BMCD-FGCD dataset are available at https://github.com/JustlfC03/SCKansformer.

The branching fraction of the decay $η_{c}(1S) \to 2(π^{+}π^{-})η$, which is found to have a strong dependence on the interference pattern between $η_c(1S)$ and non-$η_c(1S)$ processes, is measured in both destructive and constructive interference scenarios for the first time. The mass and width of the $η_{c}(1S)$ are measured to be $M=(2984.14 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.38)$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and $Γ=(28.82 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.82)$ MeV, respectively. Clear signals for the decays of the $χ_{cJ}(J=0,1,2)$ and the $η_{c}(2S)$ to $2(π^{+}π^{-})η$ are also observed for the first time, and the corresponding branching fractions are measured. The ratio of the branching fractions between the $η_{c}(2S)$ and $η_{c}(1S)$ decays is significantly lower than the theoretical prediction, which might suggest different dynamics in their decays.

In these analyses, the contributions of the vacuum condensate terms $\langle g_{s}^{2}GG\rangle$ and $\langle g_{s}^{3}GGGf\rangle$ are considered. In addition, the decay widths and branching ratios of several decay channels are obtained by using the calculated form factors. These decay processes include the nonleptonic decays of $B_c^- \to η_c π^-$, $η_c K^-$, $η_c ρ^-$, $η_c K^{*-}$, $B_c^- \to J/ψπ^-$, $J/ψK^-$, $J/ψρ^-$, $J/ψK^{*-}$, and the semileptonic decays of $B_c^- \to η_c \mathcal{l} \barν$, $B_c^- \to J/ψ\mathcal{l} \barν$. These results about the form factors and decay properties of $B_c$ meson provide useful information for us to study the heavy-quark dynamics and find new physics(NP) beyond Standard Model(SM).

To enable effective human-AI collaboration, merely optimizing AI performance while ignoring humans is not sufficient. Recent research has demonstrated that designing AI agents to account for human behavior leads to improved performance in human-AI collaboration. However, a limitation of most existing approaches is their assumption that human behavior is static, irrespective of AI behavior. In reality, humans may adjust their action plans based on their observations of AI behavior. In this paper, we address this limitation by enabling a collaborative AI agent to consider the beliefs of its human partner, i.e., what the human partner thinks the AI agent is doing, and design its action plan to facilitate easier collaboration with its human partner. Specifically, we developed a model of human beliefs that accounts for how humans reason about the behavior of their AI partners. Based on this belief model, we then developed an AI agent that considers both human behavior and human beliefs in devising its strategy for working with humans. Through extensive real-world human-subject experiments, we demonstrated that our belief model more accurately predicts humans' beliefs about AI behavior. Moreover, we showed that our design of AI agents that accounts for human beliefs enhances performance in human-AI collaboration.

Recent studies in joint source-channel coding (JSCC) have fostered a fresh paradigm in end-to-end semantic communication. Despite notable performance achievements, present initiatives in building semantic communication systems primarily hinge on the transmission of continuous channel symbols, thus presenting challenges in compatibility with established digital systems. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to address this challenge by develo** a multi-order digital joint coding-modulation (MDJCM) scheme for semantic communications. Initially, we construct a digital semantic communication system by integrating a multi-order modulation/demodulation module into a nonlinear transform source-channel coding (NTSCC) framework. Recognizing the non-differentiable nature of modulation/demodulation, we propose a novel substitution training strategy. Herein, we treat modulation/demodulation as a constrained quantization process and introduce scaling operations alongside manually crafted noise to approximate this process. As a result, employing this approximation in training semantic communication systems can be deployed in practical modulation/demodulation scenarios with superior performance. Additionally, we demonstrate the equivalence by analyzing the involved probability distribution. Moreover, to further upgrade the performance, we develop a hierarchical dimension-reduction strategy to provide a gradual information extraction process. Extensive experimental evaluations demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method over existing digital and non-digital JSCC techniques.

Advances in deep generative modelling have not translated well to tabular data. We argue that this is caused by a mismatch in structure between popular generative models and discriminative models of tabular data. We thus devise a technique to turn TabPFN -- a highly performant transformer initially designed for in-context discriminative tabular tasks -- into an energy-based generative model, which we dub TabPFGen. This novel framework leverages the pre-trained TabPFN as part of the energy function and does not require any additional training or hyperparameter tuning, thus inheriting TabPFN's in-context learning capability. We can sample from TabPFGen analogously to other energy-based models. We demonstrate strong results on standard generative modelling tasks, including data augmentation, class-balancing, and imputation, unlocking a new frontier of tabular data generation.

Tabular data is a pervasive modality spanning a wide range of domains, and the inherent diversity poses a considerable challenge for deep learning. Recent advancements using transformer-based in-context learning have shown promise on smaller and less complex datasets, but have struggled to scale to larger and more complex ones. To address this limitation, we propose a combination of retrieval and fine-tuning: we can adapt the transformer to a local subset of the data by collecting nearest neighbours, and then perform task-specific fine-tuning with this retrieved set of neighbours in context. Using TabPFN as the base model -- currently the best tabular in-context learner -- and applying our retrieval and fine-tuning scheme on top results in what we call a locally-calibrated PFN, or LoCalPFN. We conduct extensive evaluation on 95 datasets curated by TabZilla from OpenML, upon which we establish a new state-of-the-art with LoCalPFN -- even with respect to tuned tree-based models. Notably, we show a significant boost in performance compared to the base in-context model, demonstrating the efficacy of our approach and advancing the frontier of deep learning in tabular data.

Medical image analysis suffers from a shortage of data, whether annotated or not. This becomes even more pronounced when it comes to 3D medical images. Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) can partially ease this situation by using unlabeled data. However, most existing SSL methods can only make use of data in a single dimensionality (e.g. 2D or 3D), and are incapable of enlarging the training dataset by using data with differing dimensionalities jointly. In this paper, we propose a new cross-dimensional SSL framework based on a pseudo-3D transformation (CDSSL-P3D), that can leverage both 2D and 3D data for joint pre-training. Specifically, we introduce an image transformation based on the im2col algorithm, which converts 2D images into a format consistent with 3D data. This transformation enables seamless integration of 2D and 3D data, and facilitates cross-dimensional self-supervised learning for 3D medical image analysis. We run extensive experiments on 13 downstream tasks, including 2D and 3D classification and segmentation. The results indicate that our CDSSL-P3D achieves superior performance, outperforming other advanced SSL methods.

The polygon mesh representation of 3D data exhibits great flexibility, fast rendering speed, and storage efficiency, which is widely preferred in various applications. However, given its unstructured graph representation, the direct generation of high-fidelity 3D meshes is challenging. Fortunately, with a pre-defined ordering strategy, 3D meshes can be represented as sequences, and the generation process can be seamlessly treated as an auto-regressive problem. In this paper, we validate the Neural Coordinate Field (NeurCF), an explicit coordinate representation with implicit neural embeddings, is a simple-yet-effective representation for large-scale sequential mesh modeling. After that, we present MeshXL, a family of generative pre-trained auto-regressive models, which addresses the process of 3D mesh generation with modern large language model approaches. We explore the bound neutrons decay into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 ν$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 ν$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\barν_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. After 10 years of data taking, the JUNO expected sensitivities at a 90% confidence level are $τ/B( n \rightarrow { inv} ) > 5.0 \times 10^{31} \, {\rm yr}$ and $τ/B( nn \rightarrow { inv} ) > 1.4 \times 10^{32} \, {\rm yr}$.

For Newtonian potential, in \cite{MV20} Maderna and Venturelli proved that starting from any initial position there is a hyperbolic motion with any prescribed limiting velocities at infinity.
Recently based on a different approach, Liu, Yan and Zhou \cite{LYZ21} generalized this result to a larger class of $N$-body problem. As the proof in \cite{LYZ21} is quite long and technical, we give a simplified proof for homogeneous potentials following the approach given in the latter paper.

We have investigated the single and double diffractive production of dileptons and photons in ultra-peripheral collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Utilizing advanced theoretical models that integrate quantum electrodynamics (QED) and Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) frameworks, we analyze the differential cross sections of these processes, with particular emphasis on the role of the Pomeron and resolved Pomeron structures, as well as resolved photon structures. Our research employs diffractive production mechanisms to predict dilepton and photon production rates under various LHC energy scenarios. Our results demonstrate distinct production patterns for single and double diffractive processes, highlighting their potential as probes for studying the electromagnetic structure of heavy ions and the dynamics of soft interactions in high-energy collisions. This paper provides new insights into the photon-mediated and Pomeron-mediated production mechanisms and sets the stage for future experimental investigations at collider facilities.

In the framework of the relativized quark model, the calculation of spin-orbit interactions is improved by considering the contribution from the light quark cluster in a singly heavy baryon. It enhances the energy level splitting of the orbital excitation and causes a partial removal of the energy level degeneracy and the emergence of fine structures for $Σ_{Q}$, $Ξ'_{Q}$ and $Ω_{Q}$ baryons. Based on this improvement, we systematically analyze the fine structures and retest the heavy quark dominance mechanism. This mechanism is found to be violated in the $1P$-wave states of the $Σ_{c}$, $Ξ'_{c}$ and $Ω_{c}$ baryons although it remains effective overall, which may help to understand the nature of the heavy quarks and strong interactions. With the predicted fine structures, we make the precise assignments of those observed heavy baryons which once could not be accurately explained due to their close mass values. The method used in this work is instructive and applicable for the study of more complex exotic hadron states, such as the heavy tetraquarks and pentaquarks.

Excitons, the bosonic quasiparticle emerging from Coulomb interaction between electrons and holes, will undergo a Bose-Einstein condensation(BEC) and transition into a superfluid state with global phase coherence at low temperatures. An important platform to study such excitonic physics is built on double-layer quantum wells or recent two-dimensional material heterostructures, where two parallel planes of electrons and holes are separated by a thin insulating layer. Lowering this separation distance ($d$) enhances the interlayer Coulomb interaction thereby strengthens the exciton binding energy. However, an exceedingly small $d$ will lead to the undesired interlayer tunneling, which results the annihilation of excitons. Here, we report the observation of a sequences of robust exciton condensates(ECs) in double bilayer graphenes twisted to $\sim 10^\circ$ with no insulating mid-layer. The large momentum mismatch between the two graphene layers well suppress the interlayer tunneling, allowing us to reach the separation lower limit $\sim$ 0.334 nm and investigate ECs in the extreme coupling regime. Carrying out transport measurements on the bulk and edge of the devices, we find incompressible states corresponding to ECs when both layers are half-filled in the $N=0$ and $N=1$ Landau levels (LLs). The comparison between these ECs and theoretical calculations suggest that the low-energy charged excitation of ECs can be meron-antimeron or particle-hole pair, which relies on both LL index and carrier type. Our results establish large-angle twisted bilayers as an experimental platform with extreme coupling strength for studying quantum bosonic phase and its low-energy excitations.

Fact verification tasks aim to identify the integrity of textual contents according to the truthful corpus. Existing fact verification models usually build a fully connected reasoning graph, which regards claim-evidence pairs as nodes and connects them with edges. They employ the graph to propagate the semantics of the nodes. Nevertheless, the noisy nodes usually propagate their semantics via the edges of the reasoning graph, which misleads the semantic representations of other nodes and amplifies the noise signals. To mitigate the propagation of noisy semantic information, we introduce a Confidential Graph Attention Network (CO-GAT), which proposes a node masking mechanism for modeling the nodes. Specifically, CO-GAT calculates the node confidence score by estimating the relevance between the claim and evidence pieces. Then, the node masking mechanism uses the node confidence scores to control the noise information flow from the vanilla node to the other graph nodes. CO-GAT achieves a 73.59% FEVER score on the FEVER dataset and shows the generalization ability by broadening the effectiveness to the science-specific domain.

The detection of Landau-level-like energy structures near the chemical potential of an insulator is essential to the search for a class of correlated electronic matter hosting charge-neutral fermions and Fermi surfaces, a long-proposed concept that remains elusive experimentally. Here we introduce and demonstrate that the magneto-thermoelectric response of a quantum insulator can reveal critical information not available via other approaches. We report large quantum oscillations (QOs) in the Seebeck response of the hole-doped insulating state of monolayer tungsten ditelluride (WTe2) in magnetic fields. The QOs remarkably undergo sign-changes as the field is swept, mimicking those in metals with Landau quantization. The sign-change in the thermoelectric response directly implies the presence of a field-induced Landau-level-like structure at the chemical potential of the insulator. Our results reinforce WTe2 as a platform for investigating insulating Landau levels and mobile neutral fermions in two-dimensional insulators.

The emerging all-van der Waals (vdW) magnetic heterostructure provides a new platform to control the magnetization by the electric field beyond the traditional spintronics devices. One promising strategy is using unconventional spin-orbit torque (SOT) exerted by the out-of-plane polarized spin current to enable deterministic magnetization switching and enhance the switching efficiency. However, in all-vdW heterostructures, large unconventional SOT remains elusive and the robustness of the field-free switching against external magnetic field hasn't been examined, which hinder further applications. Here we demonstrate the field-free switching in an all-vdW heterostructure combining a type-II Weyl semimetal TaIrTe4 and above-room-temperature ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2. The fully field-free switching can be achieved at 2.56 x 10^10 A per m2 at 300K and a large SOT efficiency of the out-of-plane polarized spin current generated by TaIrTe4 is determined to be 0.37. Moreover, we find that the switching polarity cannot be changed until the external in-plane magnetic field reaches 252mT, indicating a robust switching against the magnetic field. The numerical simulation suggests the large unconventional SOT reduces the switching current density and enhances the robustness of the switching. Our work shows that all-vdW heterostructures are promising candidates for future highly efficient and stable SOT-based devices.

Abstract:
Joint analysis of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) measurement by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) first data release, Type Ia supernovae (SNe) of the Dark Energy Survey Year 5 (DES5YR) release and cosmic microwave background (CMB) data favors a quintom-like dynamic dark energy model over the standard Lambda cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) model at $3.9σ$ level (Adame et al. 2024).…

2024). We demonstrate that the preference for dynamic dark energy does not rely on the detailed modeling of CMB physics and remains at $3.2σ$ level when the full CMB likelihood is replaced by a CMB acoustic-oscillation angle ($θ_\star$) prior and a baryon abundance ($Ω_bh^2$) prior. By comparing the data with over $10^4$ $Λ$CDM-based simulations, we find that both DES5YR SNe and DESI BAO contribute significantly to the preference for dynamic dark energy. The preference for dynamic dark energy is unlikely (probability $\lesssim 0.02$) due to unknown systematics in DES5YR SNe and statistical fluctuations in DESI BAO, or vice versa.

Extreme temperature outages can lead to not just economic losses but also various non-energy impacts (NEI) due to significant degradation of indoor operating conditions caused by service disruptions. However, existing resilience assessment approaches lack specificity for extreme temperature conditions. They often overlook temperature-related mortality and neglect the customer characteristics and grid response in the calculation, despite the significant influence of these factors on NEI-related economic losses. This paper aims to address these gaps by introducing a comprehensive framework to estimate the impact of resilience enhancement not only on the direct economic losses incurred by customers but also on potential NEI, including mortality and the value of statistical life during extreme temperature-related outages. The proposed resilience valuation integrates customer characteristics and grid response variables based on a scalable grid simulation environment. This study adopts a holistic approach to quantify customer-oriented economic impacts, utilizing probabilistic loss scenarios that incorporate health-related factors and damage/loss models as a function of exposure for valuation. The proposed methodology is demonstrated through comparative resilient outage planning, using grid response models emulating a Texas weather zone during the 2021 winter storm Uri. The case study results show that enhanced outage planning with hardened infrastructure can improve the system resilience and thereby reduce the relative risk of mortality by 16% and save the total costs related to non-energy impacts by 74%. These findings underscore the efficacy of the framework by assessing the financial implications of each case, providing valuable insights for decision-makers and stakeholders involved in extreme-weather related resilience planning for risk management and mitigation strategies.

Traditional ferroelectrics are limited by Neumann's principle, which confines exploration of ferroelectrics within polar point groups. Our recent work [Nat. Commun. 15, 135, (2024)] proposes the concept of fractional quantum ferroelectricity (FQFE) that extend the playground of ferroelectricity to non-polar point groups. Here, we apply group theory and introduce an efficient symmetry strategy to identify FQFE candidates. Integrated with a high-throughput screening scheme, we go through 171,527 materials and identify 202 potential FQFE candidates, which are already experimentally synthesized. In addition, we point out that the essence of FQFE is fractional atomic displacements with respect to lattice vectors, which can actually result in both fractional (type-I) and integer (type-II) quantized polarization, respectively. Through performing first-principles calculations, we verify the symmetry-predicted switchable FQFE properties in bulk AlAgS2 and monolayer HgI2. Notably, AlAgS2 exhibits an ultra-low switching barrier of 23 meV/f.u. and interlocked in-plane/out-of-plane polarization, while HgI2 demonstrates large spontaneous polarization of 42 μC/cm2. Our findings not only advance the understanding on FQFE, but also offer guidance for experimental exploration and design of novel ferroelectric materials.

In the present paper, an integrable semi-discretization of the modified Camassa-Holm (mCH) equation with cubic nonlinearity is presented. The key points of the construction are based on the discrete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation and appropriate definition of discrete reciprocal transformations. First, we demonstrate that these bilinear equations and their determinant solutions can be derived from the discrete KP equation through Miwa transformation and some reductions. Then, by scrutinizing the reduction process, we obtain a set of semi-discrete bilinear equations and their general soliton solutions in the Gram-type determinant form. Finally, we obtain an integrable semi-discrete analog of the mCH equation by introducing dependent variables and discrete reciprocal transformation. It is also shown that the semi-discrete mCH equation converges to the continuous one in the continuum limit.

Hybrid structures consisting of two-dimensional (2D) magnets and semiconductors have exhibited extensive functionalities in spintronics and opto-spintronics. In this work, we have fabricated WSe$_2$/Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures and investigated the proximity effects on 2D magnetism. Through reflective magnetic circular dichroism (RMCD), we have observed a temperature-dependent modulation of magnetic order in the heterostructure. For temperatures above $40$ K, WSe$_2$-covered Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ exhibits a larger coercive field than that observed in bare Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$, accompanied by a noticeable enhancement of the Curie temperature by $21$ K. This strengthening suggests an increase in magnetic anisotropy in the interfacial Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ layer, which can be attributed to the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) proximity effect induced by the adjacent WSe$_2$ layers. However, at much lower temperatures ($T<20$ K), a non-monotonic modification of the coercive field is observed, showing both reduction and enhancement, which depends on the thickness of the WSe$_2$ and Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ layers. Moreover, an unconventional two-step magnetization process emerges in the heterostructure, indicating the short-range nature of SOC proximity effects. Our findings revealing proximity effects on 2D magnetism may shed light on the design of future spintronic and memory devices based on 2D magnetic heterostructures.

We conduct experimental studies on the electrical transport properties of monolayer graphene directly covered by a few layers of $\rm CrI_3$. We do not observe the expected magnetic exchange coupling in the graphene but instead discover proximity effects featuring gate and magnetic field tunability. The tunability of gate voltage is manifested in the alignment of the lowest conduction band of $\rm CrI_3$ and the Fermi level of graphene, which can be controlled by the gate voltage. The coexistence of the normal and atypical quantum Hall effects in our device also corresponds to gate-control modulation do**. The lowest conduction band depends on the magnetic states of the $\rm CrI_3$ and can be altered by the magnetic field, which corresponds to the resistance loops during back-and-forth sweeps of the magnetic field. Our results serve as a reference for exploiting the magnetic proximity effects in graphene.

Two-dimensional ferroelectrics can maintain vertical polarization up to room temperature, and are, therefore, promising for next-generation nonvolatile memories. Although natural two-dimensional ferroelectrics are few, moiré superlattices provide us with a generalized method to construct ferroelectrics from non-ferroelectric parent materials. We report a realization of ferroelectric hysteresis in a AB-BA stacked twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) system. The ferroelectric polarization is prominent at zero external displacement field and reduces upon increasing displacement fields. TDBG in the AB-BA configuration possesses a superlattice of non-centrosymmetric domains, exhibiting alternatively switchable polarities even without the assistance of any boron nitride layers; however, in the AB-AB stacking case, the development of polarized domains necessitates the presence of a second superlattice induced by the adjacent boron nitride layer. Therefore, twisted multilayer graphene systems offer us a fascinating field to explore two-dimensional ferroelectricity.

Blood, a ubiquitous and fundamental carbohydrate material composed of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, has been playing an important role in biology, life science, history, and religious study, while graphene has garnered significant attention due to its exceptional properties and extensive range of potential applications. Achieving environmentally friendly, cost-effective growth using hybrid precursors and obtaining high-quality graphene through a straightforward CVD process has been traditionally considered mutually exclusive. This study demonstrates that we can produce high-quality graphene domains with controlled thickness through a one-step growth process at atmospheric pressure using blood as a precursor. Raman spectroscopy confirms the uniformity of the blood-grown graphene films, and observing the half-integer quantum Hall effect in the measured devices highlights its outstanding electronic properties. This unprecedented approach opens possibilities for blood application, facilitating an unconventional route in graphene growth applications.
