CONTEXT: The Villafranca project is combining Gaia data with ground-based surveys to analyze Galactic stellar groups with OB stars.
AIMS: We want to analyze Stock 18 within the Villafranca project, a very young stellar cluster with a symmetrical and compact H II region around it.
METHODS: We analyze the core, massive-star population, extinction, distance, membership, internal dynamics, density profile, age, IMF, total mass, stellar variability, and Galactic location of Stock 18 with Gaia data and ground-based spectroscopy.
RESULTS: Stock 18 is a very young (~1.0 Ma) cluster located at a distance of 2.91+-0.10 kpc dominated by the GLS 13 370 system, whose primary is an O9 V star. We propose that Stock 18 was in a very compact state (~0.1 pc) about 1.0 Ma ago and that most massive stars were ejected at that time without significantly affecting the less massive stars as a result of multi-body dynamical interactions. Given its age close to 1.0 Ma, the dynamical interactions took place very soon after massive star formation. Well defined expanding stellar clusters have been observed before but none as young as this one. The IMF is top heavy but if we discard the ejected ones it becomes nearly canonical. Therefore, this is another example in addition to the one we previously found (the Bermuda cluster) of (a) a very young cluster with an already evolved PDMF (b) that has significantly contributed to the future population of free-floating compact objects. If confirmed in more clusters, the number of such compact objects may be higher in the Milky Way than previously thought. Stock 18 has a variable extinction with an average value of R_5495 higher than the canonical one of 3.1. The cluster is above our Galactic mid-plane and has a distinct motion with respect to its surrounding old population, which is possibly an influence of the Perseus spiral arm.

A fairly uniform cosmic-ray (CR) distribution is observed near the Sun, except in the nearby Eridu cloud, which shows an unexplained 30-50% deficit in GeV to TeV CR flux. To explore the origin of this deficit, we studied the Reticulum cloud, which shares notable traits with Eridu: a comparable distance in the low-density region of the Local Valley and a filamentary structure of atomic hydrogen extending along ordered magnetic-field lines that are steeply inclined to the Galactic plane. Using 14 years of Fermi-LAT data in the 0.16 to 63 GeV energy band, we found that the gamma-ray emissivity in the Reticulum cloud is fully consistent with the average spectrum measured in the solar neighbourhood, but this emissivity, and therefore the CR flux, is 1.57 $\pm$ 0.09 times larger than in Eridu across the whole energy band. The difference cannot be attributed to uncertainties in gas mass. Nevertheless, we find that the two clouds are similar in many respects at a parsec scale: both have magnetic-field strengths of a few micro-Gauss in the plane of the sky; both are in approximate equilibrium between magnetic and thermal pressures; they have similar turbulent velocities and sonic Mach numbers; and both show magnetic-field regularity with a dispersion in orientation lower than 10-15 degrees over large zones. The gas in Reticulum is colder and denser than in Eridu, but we find similar parallel diffusion coefficients around a few times 1e28 cm2/s in both clouds if CRs above 1 GV in rigidity diffuse on resonant, self-excited Alfvén waves that are damped by ion-neutral interactions. The loss of CRs in Eridu remains unexplained, but these two clouds provide important test cases to further study how magnetic turbulence, line tangling, and ion-neutral dam** regulate CR diffusion in the dominant gas phase of the interstellar medium.

This study is concerned with the application of virtual reality (VR) in rehabilitation programs for faulty neck posture which is a primary source of neck pain (NP). The latter is a highly prevalent musculoskeletal disorder that is associated with serious societal and economic burden. VR has been shown to be effective in the physical rehabilitation of various diseases. Specifically, it has been shown to improve the adherence of patients and engagement to carry out physical exercises on a regular basis. Many games have been used to manage NP with different immersion levels. Towards this goal, we present a VR-based system that targets a specific neck problem, the so called forward head posture (FHP), which is a faulty head position that abnormally stresses neck structures. The system can also generalize well to other neck-related disorders and rehabilitation goals. We show the steps for designing and develo** the system, and we highlight the aspects of interaction between usability and various game elements. Using a three-point scale for user experience, we also present preliminary insights on the evaluation of the system prototype, and we discuss future enhancement directions based on the feedback from users.

Entanglement distribution based on time-bin qubits is an attractive option for emerging quantum networks. We demonstrate a 4.09 GHz repetition rate source of photon pairs entangled across early and late time bins separated by 80 ps. Simultaneous high rates and high visibilities are achieved through frequency multiplexing the spontaneous parametric down conversion output into 8 time-bin entangled pairs. We demonstrate entanglement visibilities as high as 99.4%, total entanglement rates up to 3.55e6 coincidences/s, and predict a straightforward path towards achieving up to an order of magnitude improvement in rates without compromising visibility. Finally, we resolve the density matrices of the entangled states for each multiplexed channel and express distillable entanglement rates in ebit/s, thereby quantifying the tradeoff between visibility and coincidence rates that contributes to useful entanglement distribution. This source is a fundamental building block for high-rate entanglement-based quantum key distribution systems or advanced quantum networks.

Dynamically, cosmic rays with energies above about one GeV/nucleon may be important agents of galaxy evolution. Their pressures compare with the thermal and magnetic ones impacting galactic gas accretion, fountains and galactic outflows, and alter the mass cycling between the gas phases, its efficiency depends on the properties of CR transport in the different media. We aim to study the dynamical role of CRs in sha** the interstellar medium of a galaxy when changing their propagation mode. We perform MHD simulations with the AMR code RAMSES of the evolution of the same isolated galaxy (dwarf galaxy of $10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$ down to 9-pc resolution) and compare the impact of the simplest cosmic-ray transport assumption of uniform diffusion. We have also updated the observational relation seen between the $γ$-ray luminosities and SFR of galaxies using the latest detection of Fermi LAT sources. We find that the radial and vertical distributions, and mass fractions of the gas in the different phases are marginally altered when changing CR transport. We observe positive feedback of CR on the amplification of the magnetic field in the inner half of the galaxy, except for fast isotropic diffusion. The increase in CR pressure for slow or anisotropic diffusion can suppress star formation by up to 50\%, but the dual effect of cosmic-ray pressure and magnetic amplification can reduce star formation by a factor 2.5. The $γ$-ray luminosities and SFR of the simulated galaxies are fully consistent with the trend seen in the observations in the case of anisotropic $10^{27.5-29}$ cm$^2$ s$^{-1}$ diffusion and for isotropic diffusion slower or equal to $3 \times 10^{28}$cm$^2$ s$^{-1}$. These results, therefore, do not confirm claims of very fast $10^{29-31}$ cm$^2$ s$^{-1}$ diffusion to match the Fermi LAT observations.

In this paper, a distributed turbo-like coding scheme for wireless networks with relays is proposed. We consider a scenario where multiple sources communicate with a single destination with the help of a relay. The proposed scheme can be regarded as of the decode-and-forward type. The relay decodes the information from the sources and it properly combines and re-encodes them to generate some extra redundancy, which is transmitted to the destination. The amount of redundancy generated by the relay can simply be adjusted according to requirements in terms of performance, throughput and/or power. At the destination, decoding of the information of all sources is performed jointly exploiting the redundancy provided by the relay in an iterative fashion. The overall communication network can be viewed as a serially concatenated code. The proposed distributed scheme achieves significant performance gains with respect to the non-cooperation system, even for a very large number of users. Furthermore, it presents a high flexibility in terms of code rate, block length and number of users.
