The Super-Kamiokande and T2K collaborations present a joint measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters from their atmospheric and beam neutrino data. It uses a common interaction model for events overlap** in neutrino energy and correlated detector systematic uncertainties between the two datasets, which are found to be compatible. Using 3244.4 days of atmospheric data and a beam exposure of $19.7(16.3) \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in (anti)neutrino mode, the analysis finds a 1.9$σ$ exclusion of CP-conservation (defined as $J_{CP}=0$) and a preference for the normal mass ordering.

The first-order phase transitions and related thermodynamics properties are primary concerns of materials sciences and engineering. In traditional atomistic simulations, the phase transitions and the estimation of their thermodynamic properties are challenging tasks because the trajectories get trapped in local minima close to the initial states. In this study, we investigate various extended ensemble molecular dynamics (MD) methods based on the multicanonical ensemble method using the Wang-Landau (WL) approach. We performed multibaric-multithermal (MBMT) method to fluid phase, gas-liquid transition, and liquid-solid transition of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) system. The derived thermodynamic properties of the fluid phase and the gas-liquid transition from the MBMT agree well with the previously reported equation of states (EOSs). However, the MBMT cannot correctly predict the liquid-solid transition. The multiorder-multithermal (MOMT) ensemble shows significantly enhanced sampling between liquid and solid states with an accurate estimation of transition temperatures. We further investigated the dynamics of each system based on their free energy shapes, providing fundamental insights for their sampling behaviors. This study guides the prediction of broader crystalline materials, e.g., alloys, for their phases and thermodynamic properties from atomistic modeling.

Muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance probabilities are identical in the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework, but CPT violation and non-standard interactions can violate this symmetry. In this work we report the measurements of $\sin^{2} θ_{23}$ and $Δm_{32}^2$ independently for neutrinos and antineutrinos. The aforementioned symmetry violation would manifest as an inconsistency in the neutrino and antineutrino oscillation parameters. The analysis discussed here uses a total of 1.97$\times$10$^{21}$ and 1.63$\times$10$^{21}$ protons on target taken with a neutrino and antineutrino beam respectively, and benefits from improved flux and cross-section models, new near detector samples and more than double the data reducing the overall uncertainty of the result. No significant deviation is observed, consistent with the standard neutrino oscillation picture.

This article proposes a mobile quad-arm robot: ARMS, which unifies wheeled-legged tripedal locomotion, wheeled locomotion, and quad-arm loco-manipulation. ARMS's four arms have different mechanisms and are partially designed to be general-purpose arms for the hybrid locomotion and loco-manipulation. One three-degree-of-freedom (DOF) arm has an active wheel, which is used for wheeled-legged tripedal walking and wheeled driving with passive wheels attached to the torso. Two three-DOF general-purpose arms are series elastic and used for wheeled-legged tripedal walking, object gras**, and manipulation. The upper two-DOF arm is used for manipulation only; its position and orientation are determined by coordinating all arms. Each motor is controlled by an angle controller and trajectory modification with angle, angular velocity, angular acceleration, and torque constraints. ARMS was verified with seven experiments involving joint control, wheeled-legged locomotion, wheeled locomotion and gras**, slope locomotion, block terrain locomotion, carrying a bag, and outdoor locomotion.

The data was collected on hydrocarbon targets using the off-axis T2K near detector (ND280) and the on-axis T2K near detector (INGRID) with neutrino energy spectra peaked at 0.6 GeV and 1.1 GeV respectively. The correlated neutrino flux presents an opportunity to reduce the impact of the flux uncertainty and to study the energy dependence of neutrino interactions. The extracted double-differential cross sections are compared to several Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators showing the agreement between both detectors individually and with the correlated result.

The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using $19.7(16.3)\times10^{20}$ protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional $4.7\times10^{20}$ POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on $\sin^2θ_{13}$ and the impact of priors on the $δ_\mathrm{CP}$ measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $\sin^2θ_{23}$ with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on $\sin^2θ_{13}$ from reactors, $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.561^{+0.021}_{-0.032}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $Δm^2_{32}=2.494_{-0.058}^{+0.041}\times10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV^2}$ using constant $Δχ^{2}$ intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to $δ_\mathrm{CP}=-1.97_{-0.70}^{+0.97}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $δ_\mathrm{CP}=0,π$ is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than $2σ$ credible level using a flat prior in $δ_\mathrm{CP}$, and just below $2σ$ using a flat prior in $\sinδ_\mathrm{CP}$. When the external constraint on $\sin^2θ_{13}$ is removed, $\sin^2θ_{13}=28.0^{+2.8}_{-6.5}\times10^{-3}$, in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. These results are consistent with previous T2K analyses.

The T2K experiment widely uses plastic scintillator as a target for neutrino interactions and an active medium for the measurement of charged particles produced in neutrino interactions at its near detector complex. Over 10 years of operation the measured light yield recorded by the scintillator based subsystems has been observed to degrade by 0.9--2.2\% per year. Extrapolation of the degradation rate through to 2040 indicates the recorded light yield should remain above the lower threshold used by the current reconstruction algorithms for all subsystems. This will allow the near detectors to continue contributing to important physics measurements during the T2K-II and Hyper-Kamiokande eras. Additionally, work to disentangle the degradation of the plastic scintillator and wavelength shifting fibres shows that the reduction in light yield can be attributed to the ageing of the plastic scintillator.

The SuperFGD will be a part of the ND280 near detector of the T2K and Hyper Kamiokande projects, that will help to reduce systematic uncertainties related with neutrino flux and cross-section modeling. The upgraded ND280 will be able to perform a full exclusive reconstruction of the final state from neutrino-nucleus interactions, including measurements of low momentum protons, pions and, for the first time, event-by event measurements of neutron kinematics. The time resolution defines the neutron energy resolution. We present the results of time resolution measurements made with the SuperFGD prototype that consists of 9216 plastic scintillator cubes (cube size is 1 cm$^3$) readout with 1728 wavelength-shifting fibers going along three orthogonal directions. We use data from the muon beam exposure at CERN. The time resolution of 0.97 ns was obtained for one readout channel after implementing the time calibration with a correction for the time-walk effect. The time resolution improves with energy deposited in a scintillator cube. Averaging two readout channels for one scintillator cube improves the time resolution to 0.68 ns which means that signals in different channels are not synchronous. Therefore the contribution from the time recording step of 2.5 ns is averaged as well. Averaging time values from N channels improves the time resolution by $\sim 1/\sqrt{N}$. Therefore a very good time resolution should be achievable for neutrons since neutron recoils hit typically several scintillator cubes and in addition produce larger amplitudes than muons. Measurements performed with a laser and a wide-bandwidth oscilloscope demonstrated that the time resolution obtained with the muon beam is not far from its expected limit. The intrinsic time resolution of one channel is 0.67 ns for signals of 56 photo-electron typical for minimum ionizing particles.

The world of HPC systems is changing to a more complicated system because the performance improvement of processors has been slowed down. One of the promising approaches is Domain-Specific Language(DSL), which provides a productive environment to create a high-efficient program without pain. However, existing DSL platforms themselves often lack portability and cost DSL developers great effort. To solve this issue, we propose an Aspect-Oriented Programming(AOP) based DSL constructing platform, enabling developers to build a DSL platform by combining Aspect modules. Aspect modules manage abstracted application flow, data structure, and memory access on our platform. Therefore, developers can create any DSL platform whose target application has the attributes which HPC applications usually have, the abstraction assumes. This study implemented a prototype platform that can handle MPI and OpenMP layers. The prototype supports three types of applications (Structured-Grid, Unstructured-Grid, and Particle Simulation). Then, we evaluated the overheads caused by achieving flexibility and productivity of the platform.

We investigate the adsorption and diffusion behaviors of CO2, CH4, and N2 in interfacial systems composed of a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) and amorphous silica using grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We build model systems of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with PIM-1 chains sandwiched between silica surfaces. Gas adsorption analysis using GCMC simulations shows that gas molecules are preferentially adsorbed in microcavities distributed near silica surfaces, resulting in an increase in the solubility coefficients of CO2, CH4, and N2 compared to bulk PIM-1. In contrast, diffusion coefficients obtained from MD simulations and then calibrated using the dual-mode sorption model show different tendencies depending on gas species: CO2 diffusivity decreases in MMMs compared to PIM-1, whereas CH4 and N2 diffusivities increase. These differences are attributed to competing effects of silica surfaces: the emergence of larger pores as a result of chain packing disruption, which enhances gas diffusion, and a quadrupole-dipole interaction between gas molecules and silica surface hydroxyl groups, which retards gas diffusion. The former has a greater impact on CH4 and N2 diffusivities, whereas the latter has a greater impact on CO2 diffusivity due to the strong quadrupole-dipole interaction between CO2 and surface hydroxyls. These findings add to our understanding of gas adsorption and diffusion behaviors in the vicinity of PIM-1/silica interfaces, which are unobtainable in experimental studies.

We present an ab initio derivation method for effective low-energy Hamiltonians of material with strong spin-orbit interactions. The effective Hamiltonian is described in terms of the Wannier function in the spinor form, and effective interactions are derived with the constrained random phase approximation (cRPA) method. Based on this formalism and the developed code, we derive an effective Hamiltonian of a strong spin-orbit interaction material Ca5Ir3O12. This system consists of three edge-shared IrO6 octahedral chains arranged along the c axis, and the three Ir atoms in the ab plane compose a triangular lattice. For such a complicated structure, we need to set up the Wannier spinor function under the local coordinate system. We found that a density-functional band structure near the Fermi level is formed by local dxy and dyz orbitals. Then, we constructed the ab initio dxy/dyz model. The estimated nearest neighbor transfer t is close to 0.2 eV, and the cRPA onsite U and neighboring V electronic interactions are found to be 2.4-2.5 eV and 1 eV, respectively. The resulting characteristic correlation strength defined by (U-V)/t is above 7, and thus this material is classified as a strongly correlated electron system. The onsite transfer integral involved in the spin-orbit interaction is 0.2 eV, which is comparable to the onsite exchange integrals near 0.2 eV, indicating that the spin-orbit-interaction physics would compete with the Hund physics. Based on these calculated results, we discuss possible rich ground-state low-energy electronic structures of spin, charge and orbitals with competing Hund, spin-orbit and strong correlation physics.

Local pore structures are directly observed with micro X-ray computed tomography (CT). In the simulations, the effective diffusion coefficients of oxygen and the air permeability in porous samples are calculated using random walk Monte Carlo simulations and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, respectively, based on the X-ray CT images. The calculated porosities and air permeabilities of the porous samples are in good agreement with the experimental values. The simulation results also show that the in-plane permeability is twice the through-plane permeability in the conventional sample, whereas it is slightly higher in the low-resistivity sample. The results of this study show that CFD simulation based on micro X-ray CT images makes it possible to evaluate anisotropic gas permeabilities in anisotropic porous media.

The T2K experiment reports updated measurements of neutrino and antineutrino oscillations using both appearance and disappearance channels. This result comes from an exposure of $14.9~(16.4) \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in neutrino (antineutrino) mode. Significant improvements have been made to the neutrino interaction model and far detector reconstruction. An extensive set of simulated data studies have also been performed to quantify the effect interaction model uncertainties have on the T2K oscillation parameter sensitivity. T2K performs multiple oscillation analyses that present both frequentist and Bayesian intervals for the PMNS parameters. For fits including a constraint on \ssqthonethree from reactor data and assuming normal mass ordering T2K measures $\sin^2θ_{23} = 0.53^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$ and $Δm^2_{32} = (2.45 \pm 0.07) \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$c$^{-4}$. The Bayesian analyses show a weak preference for normal mass ordering (89% posterior probability) and the upper $\sin^2θ_{23}$ octant (80% posterior probability), with a uniform prior probability assumed in both cases. The T2K data exclude CP conservation in neutrino oscillations at the $2σ$ level.

We investigate the mechanical properties of $π$-conjugated polymeric materials composed of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and fullerene C$_{60}$ using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, we perform tensile simulations of P3HT:C$_{60}$ composites with varied degrees of polymerization and C$_{60}$ mass fractions to obtain their stress-strain responses. Decomposition of stress tensor into kinetic energy and virial contributions indicates that the tensile moduli of the pure P3HT samples are greatly dependent on non-bonded interactions and on bonded interactions associated with bond-stretching, while the addition of C$_{60}$ leads to an increase in the tensile modulus originating from enhanced non-bonded interactions associated with C$_{60}$. Additionally, the tensile strength of the P3HT:C$_{60}$ samples correlates well with molecular chain entanglements, which are characterized by the average number of kinks per chain obtained from primitive path analysis. We also find that the upper and lower yield points characterizing strain softening become more pronounced with increasing C$_{60}$ mass fraction. Persistent homology analysis indicates that the emergence of the yield points correlates well with the coalescence of microvoids in the course of tensile deformation, resulting in the generation of larger voids. These results provide a fundamental understanding of the molecular determinants of the mechanical properties of $π$-conjugated polymer-fullerene composites, which can also help to interpret and predict the mechanical properties of other polymer composites containing fullerene.

We report measurements by the T2K experiment of the parameters $θ_{23}$ and $Δm^2_{32}$ which govern the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos in the three-flavor PMNS neutrino oscillation model at T2K's neutrino energy and propagation distance. Utilizing the ability of the experiment to run with either a mainly neutrino or a mainly antineutrino beam, muon-like events from each beam mode are used to measure these parameters separately for neutrino and antineutrino oscillations. Data taken from $1.49 \times 10^{21}$ protons on target (POT) in neutrino mode and $1.64 \times 10^{21}$ POT in antineutrino mode are used. The best-fit values obtained by T2K were $\sin^2\left(θ_{23}\right)=0.51^{+0.06}_{-0.07} \left(0.43^{+0.21}_{-0.05}\right)$ and $Δm^2_{32}=2.47^{+0.08}_{-0.09} \left(2.50^{+0.18}_{-0.13}\right)$\evmass for neutrinos (antineutrinos). No significant differences between the values of the parameters describing the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos were observed. An analysis using an effective two-flavor neutrino oscillation model where the sine of the mixing angle is allowed to take non-physical values larger than 1 is also performed to check the consistency of our data with the three-flavor model. Our data were found to be consistent with a physical value for the mixing angle.

We investigate the relationship between the thermal properties of a micro pulsating heat pipe (MPHP) and the internal flow characteristics. The MPHP consists of an eleven-turn closed-loop of a meandering square microchannel with a hydraulic diameter of $350\ {}μ{\rm m}$ engraved on a silicon substrate. The MPHP charged with Fluorinert FC-72 tends to exhibit higher effective thermal conductivities for the coolant temperature of $T_{\rm c} = 40\ {}^\circ\mathrm{C}$ compared to $T_{\rm c} = 20\ {}^\circ\mathrm{C}$, and provides the highest effective thermal conductivity of about $700\ {}{\rm W/(m{\cdot}K)}$ for $T_{\rm c} = 40\ {}^\circ\mathrm{C}$ and a filling ratio of 48%. Interestingly, we observe two different self-oscillation modes having different thermal conductivities, even for identical heat input rates. This tendency indicates a hysteresis of the effective thermal conductivity, which originates from the difference in the heat input rates at which the MPHP falls into and recovers from dryout. Subsequently, semantic segmentation-based image recognition is applied to the recorded flow images to identify the flow characteristics, successfully extracting four different flow patterns involving liquid slugs, liquid films, dry walls, and rapid-boiling regions. The image recognition results indicate that high effective thermal conductivities of the MPHP relate to stable self-oscillations with large amplitudes and high frequencies, along with long and thin liquid films beneficial for latent heat transfer. Finally, we perform numerical simulations of latent/sensible heat transfer via vapor plugs and of sensible heat transfer via liquid slugs using the extracted flow patterns as inputs. We find that latent heat transfer via liquid films accounts for a considerable portion of the overall heat transfer, while the sensible heat transfer via liquid slugs is much less significant.

We consider an efficient two-party protocol for securely computing the similarity of strings w.r.t. an extended edit distance measure. Here, two parties possessing strings $x$ and $y$, respectively, want to jointly compute an approximate value for $\mathrm{EDM}(x,y)$, the minimum number of edit operations including substring moves needed to transform $x$ into $y$, without revealing any private information. Recently, the first secure two-party protocol for this was proposed, based on homomorphic encryption, but this approach is not suitable for long strings due to its high communication and round complexities. In this paper, we propose an improved algorithm that significantly reduces the round complexity without sacrificing its cryptographic strength. We examine the performance of our algorithm for DNA sequences compared to previous one.

Motivated by the recent experimental discovery of superconductivity in the infinite-layer nickelate Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 [Li et al., Nature 572, 624 (2019)], we study how the correlated Ni 3dx2-y2 electrons in the NiO2 layer interact with the electrons in the Nd layer. We show that three orbitals are necessary to represent the electronic structure around the Fermi level: Ni 3dx2-y2, Nd 5d3z2-r2, and a bonding orbital made from an interstitial s orbital in the Nd layer and the Nd 5dxy orbital. By constructing a three-orbital model for these states, we find that the hybridization between the Ni 3dx2-y2 state and the states in the Nd layer is tiny. We also find that the metallic screening by the Nd layer is not so effective in that it reduces the Hubbard U between the Ni 3dx2-y2 electrons just by 10--20 %. On the other hand, the electron-phonon coupling is not strong enough to mediate superconductivity of Tc ~ 10 K. These results indicate that NdNiO2 hosts an almost isolated correlated 3dx2-y2 orbital system. We further study the possibility of realizing a more ideal single-orbital system in the Mott-Hubbard regime. We find that the Fermi pockets formed by the Nd-layer states dramatically shrink when the hybridization between the interstitial s state and Nd 5dxy state becomes small. By an extensive materials search, we find that the Fermi pockets almost disappear in NaNd2NiO4 and NaCa2NiO3.

We present ab initio GW plus cumulant-expansion calculations for an organic compound (TMTSF)2PF6 and a transition-metal oxide SrVO3. These materials exhibit characteristic low-energy band structures around the Fermi level, which bring about interesting low-energy properties; the low-energy bands near the Fermi level are isolated from the other bands and, in the isolated bands, unusually low-energy plasmon excitations occur. To study the effect of this low-energy-plasmon fluctuation on the electronic structure, we calculate spectral functions and photoemission spectra using the ab initio cumulant expansion of the Green's function based on the GW self-energy. We found that the low-energy plasmon fluctuation leads to an appreciable renormalization of the low-energy bands and a transfer of the spectral weight into the incoherent part, thus resulting in an agreement with experimental photoemission data.

Melting of MgO was studied using a multicanonical ensemble method combined with a first-principles calculation. This approach has been successively performed by using a rather simple functional form for a model inter-atomic potential that is determined from first-principles and a novel approximation treating auxiliary degrees of freedom, such as electron thermal excitations, within a multicanonical ensemble method. Although a rather simple model potential was used, this approach could distinguish differences due to the exchange-correlation potential used in the first-principles calculations. The pressure dependence of the melting point, latent heat, and volume change during melting were studied. The obtained dependence was similar to that reported by Alfe which differs from experimental results. This dependence did not change even with the PBEsol exchange-correlation potential.

We examine whether essence and quantitative aspects of electronic excitation spectra are correctly captured by an effective low-energy model constructed from an {\em ab initio} downfolding scheme. A global electronic structure is first calculated by {\em ab initio} density-functional calculations with the generalized gradient approximation. With the help of constrained density functional theory, the low-energy effective Hamiltonian for bands near the Fermi level is constructed by the downfolding procedure in the basis of maximally localized Wannier functions. The excited states of this low-energy effective Hamiltonian ascribed to an extended Hubbard model are calculated by using a low-energy solver. As the solver, we employ the Hartree-Fock approximation supplemented by the single-excitation configuration-interaction method considering electron-hole interactions. The present three-stage method is applied to GaAs, where eight bands are retained in the effective model after the downfolding. The resulting spectra well reproduce the experimental results, indicating that our downfolding scheme offers a satisfactory framework of the electronic structure calculation, particularly for the excitations and dynamics as well as for the ground state.
