Using Raman spectroscopy to study the correlated 4$d$-electron metal Sr$_2$RhO$_4$, we observe pronounced excitations at 220 meV and 240 meV with $A_\mathrm{1g}$ and $B_\mathrm{1g}$ symmetries, respectively. We identify them as transitions between the spin-orbit multiplets of the Rh ions, in close analogy to the spin-orbit excitons in the Mott insulators Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and $α$-RuCl$_3$. This observation provides direct evidence for the unquenched spin-orbit coupling in Sr$_2$RhO$_4$. A quantitative analysis of the data reveals that the tetragonal crystal field $Δ$ in Sr$_2$RhO$_4$ has a sign opposite to that in insulating Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, which enhances the planar $xy$ orbital character of the effective $J=1/2$ wave function. This supports a metallic ground state, and suggests that $c$-axis compression of Sr$_2$RhO$_4$ may transform it into a quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic insulator.

How particular bonds form in quantum materials has been a long-standing puzzle. Two key concepts dealing with charge degrees of freedom are dimerization (forming metal-metal bonds) and charge ordering (CO). Since the 1930s, these two concepts have been frequently invoked to explain numerous exciting quantum materials, typically insulators. Here we report dimerization and CO within the dimers coexisting in metallic NaRu$_2$O$_4$. By combining high-resolution x-ray diffraction studies and theoretical calculations, we demonstrate that this unique phenomenon occurs through a new type of bonding, which we call Z-type ordering. The low-temperature superstructure has strong dimerization in legs of zigzag ladders, with short dimers in legs connected by short zigzag bonds, forming Z-shape clusters: simultaneously, site-centered charge ordering also appears. Our results demonstrate the yet unknown flexibility of quantum materials with the intricate interplay among orbital, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom.

Over the past few years, there has been an astounding growth in the number of news channels as well as the amount of broadcast news video data. As a result, it is imperative that automated methods need to be developed in order to effectively summarize and store this voluminous data. Format detection of news videos plays an important role in news video analysis. Our problem involves building a robust and versatile news format detector, which identifies the different band elements in a news frame. Probabilistic progressive Hough transform has been used for the detection of band edges. The detected bands are classified as natural images, computer generated graphics (non-text) and text bands. A contrast based text detector has been used to identify the text regions from news frames. Two classifers have been trained and evaluated for the labeling of the detected bands as natural or artificial - Support Vector Machine (SVM) Classifer with RBF kernel, and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) classifier. The classifiers have been trained on a dataset of 6000 images (3000 images of each class). The ELM classifier reports a balanced accuracy of 77.38%, while the SVM classifier outperforms it with a balanced accuracy of 96.5% using 10-fold cross-validation. The detected bands which have been fragmented due to the presence of gradients in the image have been merged using a three-tier hierarchical reasoning model. The bands were detected with a Jaccard Index of 0.8138, when compared to manually marked ground truth data. We have also presented an extensive literature review of previous work done towards news videos format detection, element band classification, and associative reasoning.

We report on the synthesis of a new $γ$-phase of the spin $S$~=~$\frac{3}{2}$ compound SrCo$_2$(PO$_4$)$_2$ together with a detailed structural, magnetic and thermodynamic properties. The $γ$-phase of SrCo$_2$(PO$_4$)$_2$ crystallizes in a triclinic crystal structure with the space group $P\bar{1}$. Susceptibility and specific heat measurements reveal that SrCo$_2$(PO$_4$)$_2$ orders antiferromagnetically below $T_{\rm N}\simeq 8.5$\,K and the nature of ordering is three dimensional (3D). The magnetic isotherm at temperatures below $T_{\rm N}$ shows a field-induced spin-flop transition, related to the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, at an applied field of $\sim$~4.5~Tesla. Remarkably, heat capacity shows magnetic-field-induced transitions at $T_{\rm N1}$ = 3.6 K and $T_{\rm N2}$ = 7.4 K. The magnetic long range ordering (LRO) is also confirmed in both the Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_{1}$) of the $^{31}$P-NMR measurements. However, below the LRO we have not detected any NMR signal due to faster relaxation. We have detected two structurally different phosphorous sites in $γ$-phase of SrCo$_{2}$(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$ and they shift differently with temperature.

Magnetic properties and magnetic structure of the Ba$_{2}$Mn(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$ antiferromagnet featuring frustrated zigzag chains of $S=\frac{5}{2}$ Mn$^{2+}$ ions are reported based on neutron diffraction, density-functional band-structure calculations, as well as temperature- and field-dependent measurements of the magnetization and specific heat. A magnetic transition at $T_N\simeq 5$\,K marks the onset of the antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vector ${\mathbf k} = (\frac12\, 0\, \frac12)$ and ordered moment of $4.33\pm0.08~μ_B$/Mn$^{2+}$ at 1.5\,K, pointing along the $c$ direction. Direction of the magnetic moment is chosen by the single-ion anisotropy, which is relatively weak compared to the isostructural Ni$^{2+}$ compound. Geometrical frustration has strong impact on thermodynamic properties of Ba$_2$Mn(PO$_4)_2$, but manifestations of the frustration are different from those in Ba$_2$Ni(PO$_4)_2$, where frustration by isotropic exchange couplings is minor, yet strong and competing single-ion anisotropies are present. A spin-flop transition is observed around 2.5\,T. The evaluation of the magnetic structure from the ground state via the spin-flop state to the field-polarized ferromagnetic state has been revealed by a comprehensive neutron diffraction study as a function of magnetic field below $T_N$. Finally, a magnetic phase diagram in the $H-T$ plane is obtained.

The interplay of charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom in matter leads to various forms of ordered states through phase transitions. An important subclass of these phenomena of complex materials is charge ordering (CO), mainly driven by mixed-valence states. We discovered by combining the results of electrical resistivity ($ρ$), specific heat, susceptibility $χ$ (\textit{T}), and single crystal x-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) that Na$_{2.7}$Ru$_4$O$_9$ with the monoclinic tunnel type lattice (space group $C$2/$m$) exhibits an unconventional CO at room temperature while retaining metallicity. The temperature-dependent SC-XRD results show successive phase transitions with super-lattice reflections at \textbf{q}$_1$=(0, $\frac{1}{2}$, 0) and \textbf{q}$_2$=(0, $\frac{1}{3}$, $\frac{1}{3}$) below $T_{\textrm{C2}}$ (365 K) and only at \textbf{q}$_1$=(0, $\frac{1}{2}$, 0) between $T_{\textrm{C2}}$ and $T_{\textrm{C1}}$ (630 K). We interpreted these as an evidence for the formation of an unconventional CO. It reveals a strong first-order phase transition in the electrical resistivity at $T_{\textrm{C2}}$ (cooling) = 345 K and $T_{\textrm{C2}}$ (heating) = 365 K. We argue that the origin of the phase transition is due to the localized 4$d$ Ru-electrons. The results of our finding reveal an unique example of Ru$^{3+}$/Ru$^{4+}$ mixed valance heavy \textit{d}$^4$ ions.

The structure of K2Ni2(MoO4)3 consists of S=1 tetramers formed by Ni^{2+} ions. The magnetic susceptibility chi(T) and specific heat Cp(T) data on a single crystal show a broad maximum due to the low-dimensionality of the system with short-range spin correlations. A sharp peak is seen in chi(T) and Cp(T) at about 1.13 K, well below the broad maximum. This is an indication of magnetic long-range order i.e., the absence of spin-gap in the ground state. Interestingly, the application of a small magnetic field (H>0.1 T) induces magnetic behavior akin to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of triplon excitations observed in some spin-gap materials. Our results demonstrate that the temperature-field (T-H) phase boundary follows a power-law (T-T_{N})propotional to H^(1/alpha) with the exponent 1/alpha close to 2/3, as predicted for BEC scenario. The observation of BEC of triplon excitations in small H infers that K2Ni2(MoO4)3 is located in the proximity of a quantum critical point, which separates the magnetically ordered and spin-gap regions of the phase diagram.

Their structural and magnetic properties were characterized by means of x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. Both compounds crystalize in a hexagonal structure (space group $P-6$) consisting of CuO$_4$ Kagomé layers in the $ab$-plane but linked along $c$ direction through either rigid $bpy$ or flexible $bpe$ ligands to form 3D frame works. Magnetic measurements reveal that both the compounds undergo ferromagnetic ordering ($T_{\rm C}$) at low temperatures and the $T_{\rm C}$ and the extent of frustration could be tuned by changing the nature of the pillar ligands. {[Cu$_{3}$(CO$_{3}$)$_{2}$$(bpe)_{3}$](ClO$_{4}$)$_2$}$_{n}$ which is made up of flexible $bpe$ ligands has a $T_{\rm C}$ of 5.7 K and a Curie-Weiss temperature ($θ_{\rm CW}$) of -39.7 K giving rise to a frustration parameter of $\frac{|θ_{\rm CW}|}{T_{\rm C}} \simeq$ 6.96. But the replacement of $bpe$ by a more rigid and electronically delocalized $bpy$ ligand leads to an enhanced $T_{\rm C} \simeq$ 9.3 K and a reduced frustration parameter of $\frac{|θ_{\rm CW}|}{T_{\rm C}} \simeq$ 3.54.

We report static and dynamic properties of the antiferromagnetic compound Zn$_{2}$(VO)(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$, and the consequences of non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ do** at the V$^{4+}$ site. $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) consistently show the formation of the long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_N= 3.8-3.9$\,K. The critical exponent $β=0.33 \pm 0.02$ estimated from the temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization measured by $^{31}$P NMR at 9.4\,MHz is consistent with universality classes of three-dimensional spin models. The isotropic and axial hyperfine couplings between the $^{31}$P nuclei and V$^{4+}$ spins are $A_{\rm hf}^{\rm iso} = (9221 \pm 100)$ Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$ and $A_{\rm hf}^{\rm ax} = (1010 \pm 50)$ Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$, respectively. Magnetic susceptibility data above 6.5\,K and heat capacity data above 4.5\,K are well described by quantum Monte-Carlo simulations for the Heisenberg model on the square lattice with $J\simeq 7.7$\,K. This value of $J$ is consistent with the values obtained from the NMR shift, $1/T_1$ and electron spin resonance (ESR) intensity analysis. Do** Zn$_2$VO(PO$_4)_2$ with non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ leads to a marginal increase in the $J$ value and the overall dilution of the spin lattice. In contrast to the recent \textit{ab initio} results, we find neither evidence for the monoclinic structural distortion nor signatures of the magnetic one-dimensionality for doped samples with up to 15\% of Ti$^{4+}$. The Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ decreases linearly with increasing the amount of the non-magnetic dopant.
