The Seebeck effect consists in the induction of a voltage drop due to the temperature difference in a conductor. In the middle of XIXth century, Lord Kelvin has proposed a relation between the Seebeck coefficient and the derivative of the chemical potential over temperature in the broken circuit regime. This relation appears to be nearly universal as it equally well applies to metals, semimetals and semiconductors. We show that it may fail, however, in graphene, due to the non-locality effects in the ballistic electronic transport regime. The correction to the Kelvin's formula emerges due to the coexistence of counter-propagating non-dissipative currents of cold and hot electrons. The external magnetic field normal to the graphene sample allows separating hot and cold currents in real space. The developed formalism may help interpreting the recent experimental data on ballistic edge currents in graphene bi-layers in the quantum Hall regime [1].

We consider nonreciprocal supercurrent effects in Josephson junctions based on multiband superconductors with a pairing structure that can break time-reversal symmetry. We demonstrate that a nonreciprocal supercurrent can be generally achieved by the cooperation of interband superconducting phase mismatch and interband scattering as well as by multiband phase frustration. The effect of interband impurity scattering indicates that the amplitude and sign of the nonreciprocal supercurrent are sensitive to the interband phase relation. For the case of a three-band superconductor, due to phase frustration, we show that the profile of the supercurrent rectification is marked by a hexagonal pattern of nodal lines with vanishing amplitude. Remarkably, around the nodal lines, the supercurrent rectification amplitude exhibits three-fold structures with an alternating sign. We show that the hexagonal pattern and the three-fold structure in the interband phase space turn out to be dependent on the tunneling amplitude of each band. These findings provide hallmarks of the supercurrent rectification which can be potentially employed to unveil the occurrence of spin-singlet multiband superconductivity with time-reversal symmetry breaking.

Well-known Mott's formula links the thermoelectric power characterised by Seebeck coefficient to conductivity. We calculate analytically the thermoelectric current and Seebeck coefficient in one-dimensional systems and show that, while the prediction of Mott's formula is valid for Dirac fermions, it is misleading for the carriers having a parabolic dispersion. We apply the developed formalism to metallic single wall carbon nanotubes and obtain a non-trivial non-monotonic dependence of the Seebeck coefficient on the chemical potential. We emphasize that, in contrast to Mott's formula, the classical Kelvin's formula that links thermoelectric power to the temperature derivative of the chemical potential is perfectly valid in carbon nanotubes in the ballistic regime. Interestingly, however, the Kelvin's formula fails in two- and three-dimensional systems in the ballistic regime.

We report on neutron scattering measurements on the vortex lattice of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd. We observe the existence of the intermediate mixed state, a region where Meissner and vortex lattice phases coexist, which is a feature of low $κ$ Type-II superconductors. Following this, we obtain an estimate of the value of $κ$ using the extended London model, which confirms the expectation that $κ$ should be small. Finally, we find that the temperature dependence of the vortex lattice form factor fits well to a model designed to describe singlet-triplet mixing in non-centrosymmetric superconductors, which may shed light on the question of the gap structure in BiPd.

The concept of the energy gap is a fundamental characteristic of the band structure of a material and it determines its physical properties. Formally the energy gap appears in the dispersion relation $E_k$, where the vector $k$ is determined on the whole momentum space. However, today the {\it gapped momentum materials} are in the focus of research in which the so-called {\it momentum or $k$-gap} can emerge, i.e. some lacunae of momentum space are excluded from the domain of the function $E_k$. One of such examples present the non-Hermitian systems. Within the random phase approximation we study the dielectric properties of the momentum gapped materials in one, two and three dimensions for both cases of zero and finite temperatures. We find the corresponding plasmon modes and determine the unusual behavior of the appropriate dispersion relations for each dimensionality. Based on these findings we evaluate the absorption coefficient of gapped momentum media and provide some numerical estimations of its value for the practical applications.

We show that in the case of a two-component superconducting quasi-one-dimensional channel this catalogue can be extended by a novel inhomogeneous current state, which we have termed as a multiple-momenta state or, in short, a multiple-q state, characterized by the coexistence of two different interpenetrating Cooper pair condensates with different total momenta. Within the Ginzburg-Landau formalism for a dirty two-band superconductor with sizable impurity scattering treated in the Born-approximation we reveal that under certain conditions, the occurrence of multiple-q states can induce a cascade of transitions involving switching between them and the homogeneous BTRS (non-BTRS) states and vice versa leading this way to a complex interplay of homogeneous and inhomogeneous current states. We find that hallmarks of such a multiple-q state within a thin wire or channel can be a saw-like dependence of the depairing current and the existence of two distinct stable branches on it (a bistable current state).

Multi-component spin-singlet superconductors with competing 0- and $π$-pairing couplings, as in $s_{++}$ and $s_{\pm}$ phases, are close to instabilities with a spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. We demonstrate that the modification of the kinetic energy of superconducting electrons in a doubly connected superconducting cylinder, determined by the applied flux, generally drives transitions from chiral superconducting states to configurations that are time-reversal symmetric. This magneto-topological-induced changeover is investigated by means of a Ginzburg-Landau approach for a two-band superconductor with interband interactions and impurity scattering investigated for the case of a sample in the form of a mesoscopically thin-walled cylinder. We find that the application of a magnetic flux can convert a chiral $s_{\pm}+is_{++}$ state into a $s_{\pm}$ configuration and vice versa or tune the energy splitting of chiral states having inequivalent pairing amplitudes. We discuss signatures for the detection of these phases and of the corresponding transitions in mesoscopic superconducting loops.

Recently it was demonstrated that the long-known transition between the gap and gapless superconducting states in the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory of superconducting alloy with paramagnetic impurities is of the Lifshitz's type, i.e. at zero temperature this is the $2\frac12$ order phase transition. Since transitions of this kind in a normal metal are always associated to certain topological changes, then below we clarify the topological nature of the transition under consideration. Namely, we demonstrate that the topological invariant which in process of the transition undergoes the change is nothing but the Euler characteristic. Alternatively, in terms of the theory of catastrophes one can relate this transition to appearance of the cuspidal edge at the corresponding surface of the density of states as the function of energy and superconducting order parameter. The concept of experiments for the confirmation of $2\frac12$ order topological phase transition is proposed. Obtained theoretical results can be applied for the explanation of recent experiments with lightwave-induced gapless superconductivity, for the interpretation of the disorder induced transition $s_{\pm}$-$s_{++}$ states via gapless phase in two-band superconductors, and the emergence of gapless color superconductivity in quantum chromodynamics.

Exploiting the theory of solitons in a nonlinear elastic medium we predict a novel phenomenon called a phononic tsunami, which is characterized by the dramatic increase of the local amplitude of phonon modes. To elucidate the possible experimental detection of this phenomenon we propose to use a wedge-shaped sample in which a sharp edge serves for the emulation of the shoaling effect and such a local enhancement can be observed. Together with eigenfrequencies of transverse and longitudinal phonon modes of a system we find the characteristic dispersion relations that can be considered as a hallmark of a phononic tsunami. We justify our predictions by means of analytical calculations and numerical simulations showing a possible realization of this nonlinear effect in such a geometry. Our results provide the framework for the implementation of new kind experiments aimed at realizing and investigating a phononic tsunami phenomenon in relevant materials.

It is demonstrated that the known for a long time transition between the gap and the gapless states in the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory of a superconductor with paramagnetic impurities is of the Lifshitz type, i.e. of the $2\frac12$ order phase transition. We reveal the emergence of a cuspidal edge at the density of states surface $N(ω,Δ_0)$ ($Δ_0$ is the value of the superconducting order parameter in the absence of magnetic impurities) and the occurrence of the catastrophe phenomenon at the transition point. We study the stability of such a transition with respect to the spatial fluctuations of the magnetic impurities critical concentration $n_s$ and show that the requirement for validity of its mean field description is unobtrusive: $\nabla \left( {\ln {n_s}} \right) \ll ξ^{-1} $ (here $ξ$ is the superconducting coherence length). Finally, we show that, similarly to the Lifshitz point, the $2\frac12$ order phase transition should be accompanied by the corresponding singularities. For instance, the superconducting thermoelectric effect has a giant peak exceeding the normal value of the Seebeck coefficient by the ratio of the Fermi energy and the superconducting gap. The concept of the experiment for the confirmation of $2\frac12$ order transition nature is proposed. The obtained theoretical results can be applied for the explanation of recent experiments with lightwave-driven gapless superconductivity, for the new interpretation of the disorder induced transition $s_{\pm}$-$s_{++}$ states via gapless state in multi-band superconductors, for better understanding of the gapless color superconductivity in quantum chromodynamics, the string theory.

In this short review we pass through the milestones in the studies of the electronic topological transitions (ETT) and focus on some recent applications of the ideas worked out in their classical theory. These are: two-dimensional electron systems, de Haas-van Alphen effect, classification of ETT in multidimensional systems, superconductivity in systems close to ETT, thermoelectricity in heavy-fermion systems, where the cascades of topological changes of Fermi surface (FS) are generated by magnetic field. The history of studies of ETT is inextricably linked with Kharkov school of condensed matter physics, with such names as I.M. Lifshitz, V.G.Bar'yakhtar and many other. Among them is Moisey Isaakovich Kaganov, who contributed much in studies of the role of geometry and topology of FS in physical properties of the metals. Two of the authors (A.V. and Y.G.) had a honor and pleasure to work with "Musik", as all friends called Kaganov; all of us have been learning the niceties of science from his books. "The Fermi surface is the stage on which the drama of the life of the electron is played out" wrote Kaganov and Lifshitz. We devote this work to their memory.

The detailed analytical and numerical analysis of the electron spectrum, persistent currents, and their densities for an annulus placed in a constant magnetic field (Corbino disk geometry) is presented. We calculate the current density profiles and study their dependence on the inner and outer radii of the annular. We study evolution of the persistent currents and track their emergence and decay for different limiting cases of such a geometry, starting from a nanodot and ending by a macroscopic circle. Our analytical results for the currents are confirmed by the agreement between the integration of the corresponding current densities and the application of the Byers-Yang formula, when it is applicable. Among other results we find the general expression for the persistent current in a narrow annulus, which in the one channel approximation reproduces the well-known result for quasi-one dimensional mesoscopic metallic ring. Moreover it allows to analyze the multi-channel case of a relatively wide annulus. Our study can be used for more accurate treatment and interpretation of the experimental data with measurements of the persistent currents in different doubly-connected systems.

The striking features of this phenomenon are an unusual many-body screening of pseudogap state and the importance of pair-exchange couplings, which induces multiple pseudogap formation in the two bands. The multi-band configuration suppresses pairing fluctuations and the pseudogap opening in the strongly-interacting shallow band at small pair-exchange couplings by screening effects, with possible connection to the pseudogap phenomenology in iron based superconductors. On the other hand, the multiple pseudogap mechanism accompanies with the emergence of binary preformed Cooper pairs originating from interplay between intra-band and pair-exchange couplings.

We investigate Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)- Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover in a two-band superfluid Fermi gas with an energy shift between the bands. When the intraband coupling in the cold (first) band is fixed as weak, we find that in the case of vanishing interband interaction and in the strong-coupling limit of the hot (second) band the system undergoes a transition to a single-component configuration with the full suppression of the first energy gap and with the full redistribution of particles between bands. For non-vanishing interband interaction we reveal the non-monotonic dependence of the energy gap in the first band vs intraband coupling in the second band with the presence of a hump. In the case of weak interband coupling the system shows a significant amplification of the intrapair correlation length of the condensate in the first band in the strong-coupling regime of the second band, which clearly indicates the coexistence of giant Cooper pairs and a bosonic condensate even for nonzero temperatures. This can lead to a non-monotonic temperature dependence of the second energy gap with a peak. Here predicted coexistence of the giant Cooper pairs and bosonic molecules can be verified by means of the visualization of vortex cores in the two-component atomic condensates as well as in some iron-based superconductors.

We study the superfluid critical temperature in a two-band attractive Fermi system with strong pairing fluctuations associated with both interband and intraband couplings. We focus specifically on a configuration where the intraband coupling is varied from weak to strong in a shallow band coupled to a weakly-interacting deeper band. The whole crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) condensation of largely overlap** Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of tightly bound molecules is covered by our analysis, which is based on the extension of the Nozières-Schmitt-Rink (NSR) approach to a two-band system. In comparison with the single-band case, we find a strong enhancement of the critical temperature, a significant reduction of the preformed pair region where pseudogap effects are expected, and the entanglement of two kinds of composite bosons in the strong-coupling BEC regime.

We observe a hysteretic reorientation of the magnetic vortex lattice in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Ru7B3, with the change in orientation driven by altering magnetic field below Tc. Normally a vortex lattice chooses either a single or degenerate set of orientations with respect to a crystal lattice at any given field or temperature, a behavior well described by prevailing phenomenological and microscopic theories. Here, in the absence of any typical VL structural transition, we observe a continuous rotation of the vortex lattice which exhibits a pronounced hysteresis and is driven by a change in magnetic field. We propose that this rotation is related to the spontaneous magnetic fields present in the superconducting phase, which are evidenced by the observation of time-reversal symmetry breaking, and the physics of broken inversion symmetry. Finally, we develop a model from the Ginzburg-Landau approach which shows that the coupling of these to the vortex lattice orientation can result in the rotation we observe.

Decreasing the temperature one can switch the system from uniform to the FFLO state which is accompanied by the dam** of the diamagnetic Meissner response down to zero and also by the sign change in the curvature of the current-velocity dependence. Our estimates show that an additional layer of the normal metal (N) covering the ferromagnet substantially soften the conditions required for the predicted FFLO instability and for existing S/F/N systems the temperature of the transition into the FFLO phase can reach several kelvins.

Emerging in the 1950s, the multiband superconductivity has been considered for a long time as an approximate model in the form of a generalization of the BCS theory to the case of two bands for a more accurate quantitative description of the properties and characteristics of such superconductors as cuprates, heavy fermions compounds, metal boron carbides, fullerides, strontium ruthenate etc. due to their complex piecewise-continuous Fermi surfaces. However the discovery of the multiband structure of the superconducting state in magnesium diboride in 2001 and iron oxypnictides and chalcogenides in 2008 led to the appearance of many papers in which effects and different dependences well known for conventional single-band s-wave superconductors were reexamined. The main purpose of these studies was to reveal the symmetry type of the order parameter, which provides an important information about the mechanism of Cooper pairing in these superconductors. One of the most effective methods of obtaining information on the symmetry properties of the order parameter in the multiband superconductors is phase-sensitive techniques. This review summarizes the results of theoretical and experimental studies of the proximity and Josephson effects in systems based on multiband superconductors in contact with normal metals, insulators and other superconductors.

Within a Ginzburg-Landau formalism we establish analytically the necessary and sufficient conditions to realize a doubly degenerate superconducting ground state with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS) in a multi-band superconductor. Using these results we analyze the ground state of a three-band superconductor in the cylindrical geometry in an external magnetic field. We show that depending on the interband coupling constants, a magnetic flux can induce current density jumps in such superconducting geometries that are related to adiabatic or non-adiabatic transitions from BTRS to time-reversal symmetric states and vice versa. This unusual current induced magnetic flux response can in principle be used experimentally to detect superconducting BTRS ground states as well as corresponding metastable excited states.

It was found that in the case of Josephson junctions formed by a single-band and an $s_\pm$-wave two-band superconductor as well as by a single-band and a three-band superconductor the junctions become frustrated, demonstrating the $φ$-contact properties. Depending on the ground state of a three-band superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS), the Josephson junction can have from one to three energy minima, some of which can be locally stable. We also study the behavior of a dc SQUID based on the Josephson junctions between single-band and multi-band superconductors. Some features on the dependences of the critical current and the total magnetic flux on the applied flux of a dc SQUID based on the Josephson point contacts between a single-band superconductor and an $s_\pm$-wave superconductor, three-band superconductor with BTRS and three-band superconductor without BTRS as compared to the conventional dc SQUIDs based on single-band superconductors were found. The results can be used as an experimental tool to detect the existence of multi-band structure and BTRS.

The behavior of a dc SQUID, based on a dirty point contacts between a single-band and three-band superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry is investigated. Using earlier obtained results for Josephson effects in such systems new features in characteristics of a dc SQUID are revealed. It is shown that in the case of a BTRS (broken time-reversal symmetry) three-band superconductor for the applied external magnetic flux, which is divisible by the half-integer flux, strong degeneracy of ground states of a dc SQUID is taken place. This can lead to the appearance of possible multi-hysteresis loops on a dependence of a total flux in the dc SQUID from the externally applied flux. The number of these loops depends on the position of ground states of a three-band superconductor. Also it is found that dependencies of a critical current on applied magnetic flux can have complicated multi-periodic forms, which are differ from strictly periodic characteristics for conventional dc SQUIDs and Fraunhofer patterns for Josephson contacts in the external magnetic field.

Within the formalism of Usadel equations the Josephson effect in dirty point contacts between single-band and three-band superconductors is investigated. The general expression for the Josephson current, which is valid for arbitrary temperatures, is obtained. We calculate current-phase relations for very low temperature and in the vicinity of the critical temperature. For three-band superconductors with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS) point contacts undergo frustration phenomena with different current-phase relations, corresponding to φ-contacts. For three-band superconductors without BTRS we have close to sinusoidal current-phase relations and absence of the frustration, excepting the case of very low temperature, where under certain conditions two ground states of the point contact are realized. Our results can be used as the potential probe for the detection of the possible BTRS state in three-band superconducting systems.

Within the framework of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, the dynamics of the order parameter in narrow superconducting channels of different lengths is investigated in the ac voltage-driven regime. The resistive state of the system at low frequencies of the applied voltage is characterized by the formation of time-periodic groups of oscillating phase-slip centers PSCs. Increasing the frequency reduces the lifetime of these periodic groups. Depending on the length of the channel, the ac voltage either tends to restore the state with a single central PSC in periodic groups or minimizes the number of forming PSCs and induces their ordering in the system. For relatively short channels, a further increase in frequency leads to the suppression of the order parameter without PCS formation. For the systems with the channel length exceeding the specified limit, the formation of PSC starts after a certain time delay which increases rapidly with frequency. The current-voltage characteristics of a relatively short channel at different applied voltage frequencies are calculated. It is found that the current-voltage characteristics exhibit a step-like structure, where the height of the first step is determined by the quadruple value of the Josephson frequency.

Within the framework of this three-band Ginzburg-Landau theory, expressions for the critical temperature Tc and the temperature dependence of the upper critical field H_c2 are obtained. Based on some special cases of the matrix of interaction constants, we demonstrate the influence of the sign of the interband interaction on the critical temperature and the upper critical field as compared with a two-band superconductor where it plays no role. We study also analytically and numerically the effect of its magnitude.

Within the framework of non-stationary Ginzburg-Landau equations generalized on a case of two order parameters, we investigated dynamic characteristics of two-band superconducting MgB2 filaments in a voltage-driven regime. We calculated current-voltage characteristics of superconducting MgB2 filaments with different lengths and compared with single-band superconductor of corresponding sizes. Despite the presence of two interacting bands for small values of a ratio of effective Cooper pairs weights, phenomenological constants of diffusion and large lengths of channels the well-known S-form of current-voltage characteristic for the single-band superconductor with fluctuations of the current density in a certain interval of the voltage also takes place in the case of two-band superconductor. Analysis of spectra of the current density and the time-evolution of order parameters for long channels points out that such unusual forms of current-voltage characteristics are caused by the occurrence either chaotic oscillations of order parameters modules or the interference of some their oscillation modes. The further increase of the ratio of effective weights of Cooper pairs and phenomenological constants of diffusion smoothes these oscillations and transforms the system in an ordered state, where the S-form of current-voltage characteristics becomes more flattened. The latter can be the feature of two-band superconducting long channels.

In the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau approach, we present a self-consistent theory of specific soliton states in mesoscopic (thin-walled) two-band-superconducting cylinders in external parallel magnetic fields. Such states arise in the presence of "Josephson-type" interband coupling, when phase winding numbers are different for each component of the superconducting order parameter. We evaluate the Gibbs free energy of the sysyem up to second-order terms in a certain dimensionless parameter $ε\approx\frac{\mathcal{L}_{m}}{\mathcal{L}_{k}}\ll1$, where $\mathcal{L}_{m}$ and $\mathcal{L}_{k} $ are the magnetic and kinetic inductance, respectively. We derive the complete set of exact soliton solutions. These solutions are thoroughly analyzed from the viewpoint of both local and global (thermodynamic) stability. In particular, we show that rotational-symmetry-breaking caused by the formation of solitons gives rise to a zero-frequency rotational mode. Although soliton states prove to be thermodynamically metastable, the minimal energy gap between the lowest-lying single-soliton states and thermodynamically stable zero-soliton states can be much smaller than the magnetic Gibbs free energy of the latter states, provided that intraband "penetration depths" differ substantially and interband coupling is weak. The results of our investigation may apply to a wide class of mesoscopic doubly-connected structures exhibiting two-band superconductivity.

Homogeneous current states in thin films and Josephson current in superconducting microbridges are studied within the frame of a two-band Ginzburg-Landau theory. By solving the coupled system of equations for two order parameters the depairing current curves and Josephson current-phase relation are calculated for different values of phenomenological parameters gamma and eta. Coefficients gamma and eta describe the coupling of order parameters (proximity effect) and their gradients (drag effect) respectively. For definite values of parameters the dependence of current j on superfluid momentum contains local minimum and corresponding bi-stable states. It is shown that the Josephson microbridge from two-band superconductor can demonstrate pi-junction behaviour.
