A unified approach to the plus-construction, Bousfield localization, Moore spaces and zero-in-the-spectrum examples
Abstract: We introduce a construction adding low-dimensional cells to a space that satisfies certain low-dimensional conditions; it preserves high-dimensional homology with appropriate coefficients. This includes as special cases Quillen's plus construction, Bousfield's integral homology localization, the existence of Moore spaces M(G,1) and Bousfield and Kan's partial k-completion of spaces. We also use it… ▽ More

Demonstration of Turnstiles as a Chaotic Ionization Mechanism in Rydberg Atoms
Abstract: We present an experimental and theoretical study of the chaotic ionization of quasi-one-dimensional potassium Rydberg wavepackets via a phase-space turnstile mechanism. Turnstiles form a general transport mechanism for numerous chaotic systems, and this study explicitly illuminates their relevance to atomic ionization. We create time-dependent Rydberg wavepackets, subject them to alternating appli… ▽ More

Coherent quantum effects through dispersive bosonic media
Abstract: The coherent evolution of two atomic qubits mediated by a set of bosonic field modes is investigated. By assuming a specific encoding of the quantum states in the internal levels of the two atoms we show that entangling quantum gates can be realised, with high fidelity, even when a large number of mediating modes is involved. The effect of losses and imperfections on the gates' operation is also c… ▽ More

Distributed coherent manipulation of qutrits by virtual excitation processes
Abstract: We propose a scheme for the deterministic coherent manipulation of two atomic qutrits, trapped in separate cavities coupled through a short optical fibre or optical resonator. We study such a system in the regime of dispersive atom-field interactions, where the dynamics of atoms, cavities and fibre operates through virtual population of both the atomic excited states and photonic states in the c… ▽ More

Expected Performance of the ATLAS Experiment - Detector, Trigger and Physics
Abstract: A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on… ▽ More

Integration of the mKdV hierarchy with integral type of source
Abstract: We investigate the mKdV hierarchy with integral type of source (mKdVHWS), which consist of the reduced AKNS eigenvalue problem with $r=q$ and the mKdV hierarchy with extra term of the integration of square eigenfunction. First we propose a method to find the explicit evolution equation for eigenfunction of the auxiliary linear problems of the mKdVHWS. Then we determine the evolution equations of… ▽ More
