We investigate radial metallicity gradients for a sample of dwarf stars from the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) Data Release 3 (DR3). We select a total of approximately 17000 F-type and G-type dwarfs using selection of colour, log g, and uncertainty on derived space motion, calculate for each star a probabilistic (kinematic) population assignment to thick or thin disc using space motion, and additionally another (dynamical) assignment using stellar vertical orbital eccentricity. We additionally subsample by colour, to provide samples biased to young thin disc and to older thin disc stars. We derive a metallicity gradient as a function of Galactocentric radial distance, i.e. d[M/H]/dR_m=-0.051+/-0.005 dex kpc^-1, for the youngest sample, F-type stars with vertical orbital eccentricities e_V<=0.04. Samples biased to older thin disc stars show systematically shallower abundance gradients.

The W3 and W4 magnitudes were not considered due to their insufficient signal to noise ratio (S/N). The coordinates of 825 dwarfs along with their BVRI, gri, and JHK_s data, taken from Bilir et al. (2008) were matched with the coordinates of stars in the preliminary data release of WISE (Wright et al., 2010) and a homogeneous dwarf sample with high S/N ratio have been obtained using the following constraints: 1) the data were dereddened, 2) giants were identified and excluded from the sample, 3) sample stars were selected according to data quality, 4) transformations were derived for sub samples of different metallicity range, and 5) transformations are two colour dependent. These colour transformations, coupled with known absolute magnitudes at shorter wavelenghts, can be used in space density evaluation for the Galactic (thin and thick) discs, at distances larger than the ones evaluated with JHK_s photometry.

All available photometric and spectroscopic observations were collected and used as the basis of a detailed analysis of the close binary IM Mon. The orbital period of the binary was refined to 1.19024249(0.00000014) days. The Roche equipotentials, fractional luminosities (in (B, V) and H_p bands) and fractional radii for the component stars in addition to mass ratio q, inclination i of the orbit and the effective temperature T_eff of the secondary cooler less massive component were obtained by the analysis of light curves. IM Mon is classified to be a detached binary system in contrast to the contact configuration estimations in the literature. The absolute parameters of IM Mon were derived by the simultaneous solutions of light and radial velocity curves as M_1,2=5.50(0.24)M_o and 3.32(0.16)M_o, R1,2=3.15(0.04)R_o and 2.36(0.03)R_o, T_eff1,2=17500(350) K and 14500(550) K implying spectral types of B4 and B6.5 ZAMS stars for the primary and secondary components respectively. The modelling of the high resolution spectrum revealed the rotational velocities of the component stars as V_rot1=147(15) km/s and V_rot2=90(25) km/s. The photometric distance of 353(59) pc was found more precise and reliable than Hipparcos distance of 341(85) pc. An evolutionary age of 11.5(1.5) Myr was obtained for IM Mon. Kinematical and dynamical analysis support the membership of the young thin-disk population system IM Mon to the Ori OB1a association dynamically. Finally, we derived the distance, age and metallicity information of Ori OB1a sub-group using the information of IM Mon parameters.

We reduced the metallicities of 11 authors to the metallicities of Valenti & Fischer (2005), thus obtained a homogeneous set of data which increased the accuracy of the calibration, i.e. [Fe/H]=-14.316*delta^{2}_{0.6}-3.557*delta_{0.6}+0.105. Comparison of the metallicity residuals, for two sets of data, based on the metallicity dependent guillotine factors with the ones obtained via metal free guillotine factors, shows that metallicities estimated by means of new guillotine factors are more accurate than the other ones. This advantage can be used in the metallicity gradient investigation of the Galactic components, i.e. thin disc, thick disc and halo.

We derive space motions for these stars, and deduce the solar space velocity with respect to the Local Standard of Rest. The peculiar solar motion we derive is in excellent agreement in radial $U_{\odot}$ and vertical $W_{\odot}$ peculiar motions with other recent determinations. Our derived tangential peculiar velocity, $V_{\odot}$ agrees with very recent determinations, which favour values near 13 km s$^{-1}$, in disagreement with earlier studies. The derived values are not significantly dependent on the comparison sample chosen, or on the method of analysis. The local galaxy seems very well dynamically relaxed, in a near symmetric potential.

The final sample was refined applying the following steps: (1) the data were dereddened, (2) the sample stars selected are of the highest photometric quality. We give two--colour dependent transformations as a function of metallicity as well as independent of metallicity. The transformations provide absolute magnitudes and distance determinations which can be used in space density evaluations at relatively short distances where some or all of the SDSS magnitudes of late-type giants are saturated.

The optical and near-infrared two-colour diagrams reveal the colour excesses in the direction of the cluster as $E(B-V)=0.68\pm0.06$, $E(J-H)=0.21\pm0.02$ and $E(J-K_{s})=0.33\pm0.04$ mag. These results are consistent with normal interstellar extinction values. Optical and near-infrared Zero Age Main-Sequences (ZAMS) provided an average distance modulus of $(m-M)_{0}=10.80\pm0.13$ mag, which can be translated into a distance of $1440\pm80$ pc. Finally, using Padova isochrones we determined the metallicity and age of the cluster as $Z=0.015\pm 0.004$ ($[M/H]=-0.10 \pm 0.10$ dex) and $\log (t/yr) = 8.40\pm0.04$, respectively.

The local space densities of the thick disc and halo are almost the same for all fields, <(n_{2}/n_{1})>=6.52% and <(n_{3}/n_{1})>=0.35%, respectively, a result different than the one cited for high-latitude fields. The thin disc's scaleheight is 325 pc in the galactic centre changes to 369 pc in the third quadrant, which confirms the existence of disc flare, whereas the thick disc scaleheight is as large as 952 pc at galactic longitude l=20 and 10% lower at l=160, which confirms the existence of the disc long bar in the direction l=27. Finally, the variation of the axis ratio of the halo with galactic longitude is almost flat, <(c/a)>=0.56, except a slight minimum and a small maximum in the second and third quadrants, respectively, indicating an effect of the long bar which seems plausible for a shallow halo. We estimated the metallicities of unevolved G-type stars and discussed the metallicity gradient for different vertical distances. The metallicity gradient is d[M/H]/dz=-0.30 dex kpc$^{-1}$ for short distances, confirming the formation of this region of the Galaxy by dissipational collapse. However, its change is steeper in the transition regions of different galactic components. The metallicity gradient is almost zero for inner halo (5<z<10 kpc), indicating a formation of merger or accretion of numerous fragments such as dwarf galaxies.

We present the spectroscopic orbit solutions of three double-lines eclipsing binaries, BG Ind, IM Mon and RS Sgr. The first precise radial velocities (RVs) of the components were determined using high resolution echelle spectra obtained at Mt. John University Observatory in New Zealand. The RVs of the components of BG Ind and RS Sgr were measured using Gaussian fittings to the selected spectral lines, whereas two-dimensional cross-correlation technique was preferred to determine the RVs of IM Mon since it has relatively short orbital period among the other targets and so blending of the lines is more effective. For all systems, the Keplerian orbital solution was used during the analysis and also circular orbit was adopted because the eccentricities for all targets were found to be negligible. The first precise orbit analysis of these systems gives the mass ratios of the systems as 0.894, 0.606 and 0.325, respectively for BG Ind, IM Mon and RS Sgr. Comparison of the mass ratio values, orbital sizes and minimum masses of the components of the systems indicates that all systems should have different physical, dynamical and probable evolutionary status.

Using the Lutz--Kelker (LK) bias corrected (most probable) parallaxes, periods ($0.26< P(day)< 0.87$), and colors (0.04<$(B-V)_{0}$<1.28) of the 31 selected W UMa, the PLC relation have been revised and re-calibrated. The difference between the old (revised but not bias corrected) and the new (LK bias corrected) relations are almost negligible in predicting the distances of W UMa stars up to about 100 parsecs. But, it increases and may become intolerable as distances of stars increase. Additionally, using $(J-H)_{0}$ and $(H-K_{s})_{0}$ colors from 2MASS (Two Micron All Sky Survey) data, a PLC relation working with infrared data was derived. It can be used with infrared colors in the range $-0.01<(J-H)_{0}<0.58$, and $-0.10<(H-K_{s})_{0}<0.18$. Despite {\em 2MASS} data are single epoch observations, which are not guaranteed at maximum brightness of the W UMa stars, the established relation has been found surprisingly consistent and reliable in predicting LK corrected distances of W UMa stars.

Lutz-Kelker bias corrected absolute magnitude calibrations for the detached binary systems with main-sequence components are presented. The absolute magnitudes of the calibrator stars were derived at intrinsic colours of Johnson-Cousins and 2MASS (Two Micron All Sky Survey) photometric systems. As for the calibrator stars, 44 detached binaries were selected from the Hipparcos catalogue, which have relative observed parallax errors smaller than 15% ($σ_π/π\leq0.15$). The calibration equations which provide the corrected absolute magnitude for optical and near-infrared pass bands are valid for wide ranges of colours and absolute magnitudes: $-0.18<(B-V)_{0}<0.91$, $-1.6<M_{V}<5.5$ and $-0.15<(J-H)_{0}<0.50$, $-0.02<(H-K_{s})_{0}<0.13$, $0<M_{J}<4$, respectively. The distances computed using the luminosity-colours (LCs) relation with optical (BV) and near-infrared ($JHK_{s}$) observations were compared to the distances found from various other methods. The results show that new absolute magnitude calibrations of this study can be used as a convenient statistical tool to estimate the true distances of detached binaries out of Hipparcos' distance limit.

The thick disc scaleheight moves from $\sim$550 pc at $120^{\circ}<l<150^{\circ}$ to $\sim$720 pc at $250^{\circ}<l<290^{\circ}$, while the thin disc scaleheight is as large as $\sim$195 pc in the anticenter direction and $\sim$15% lower at $|l|<30^\circ$. Finally, the axis ratio ($c/a$) of the halo changes from a mean value of $\sim$0.55 in the two first quadrants of the Galaxy to $\sim$0.70 at $190^{\circ}<l<300^{\circ}$. For the halo, the reason for the dependence of the model parameters on the Galactic longitude arises from the well known asymmetric structure of this component. However, the variation of the model parameters of the thin and thick discs with Galactic longitude originates from the gravitational effect of the Galactic long bar. Moreover, the excess of stars in quadrant I (quadrant III) over quadrant IV (quadrant II) is in agreement with this scenario.

We estimated 34 sets of Galactic model parameters for three intermediate latitude fields with Galactic longitudes l=60, l=90, and l=180, and we discussed their dependence on the volume. Also, we confirmed the variation of these parameters with absolute magnitude and Galactic longitude. The star samples in two fields are restricted with bright and unit absolute magnitude intervals, (4,5], and (5,6], whereas for the third field a larger absolute magnitude interval is adopted, (4,10]. The limiting apparent magnitudes of star samples are g=15 and g=22.5 mag which provide space densities within distances in the line of sight 0.9 and 25 kpc. The Galactic model parameters for the thin disc are not volume dependent. However, the ones for thick disc and halo do show spectacular trends in their variations with volume, except for the scalelength of the thick disc. The local space density of the thick disc increases, whereas the scaleheight of the same Galactic component decreases monotonically. However, both model parameters approach asymptotic values at large distances. The axial ratio of the halo increases abruptly for the volumes where thick disc is dominant, whereas it approaches an asymptotic value gradually for larger volumes, indicating a continuous transition from disclike structure to a spherical one at the outermost region of the Galaxy. The variation of the Galactic model parameters with absolute magnitude can be explained by their dependence on the stellar luminosity, whereas the variation with volume and Galactic longitude at short distances is a bias in analysis.

In this paper, we try to find any dependence of the Galactic structural parameters with the Galactic longitude for either the thin disc or the thick disc of the Milky Way, that would indicate to possible inhomogeneities or asymmetries in those Galactic components. Galactic model parameters obtained using a set of 36 high-latitude fields with 2MASS photometry for the different fields show that, effectively, they are Galactic longitude-dependent. The thick disc scaleheight changes from 800 pc at 150 deg < l < 230 deg to 1050 pc at |l| < 30 deg. A plausible explanation for this finding might be the effect of the flare in this Galactic component that changes the scaleheight with Galactocentric distance

We present the Galactic model parameters for thin disc estimated by Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data of 14 940 stars with apparent magnitudes $16<g_{o}\leq21$ in six intermediate latitude fields in the first Galactic quadrant. Star/galaxy separation was performed by using the $SDSS$ photometric pipeline and the isodensity contours in the $(g-r)_{0}-(r-i)_{0}$ two colour diagram. The separation of thin disc stars is carried out by the bimodal distribution of stars in the $(g-r)_{o}$ histogram, and the absolute magnitudes were evaluated by a procedure presented in the literature Bilir et al. (2005). Exponential density law fits better to the derived density functions for the absolute magnitude intervals $8<M(g)\leq9$ and $11<M(g)\leq12$, whereas sech/sech$^{2}$ laws are more appropriate for absolute magnitude intervals $9<M(g)\leq10$ and $10<M(g)\leq11$. We showed that the scaleheight and scalelength are Galactic longitude dependent. The average values and ranges of the scaleheight and the scalelength are $<H>=220$ pc ($196\leq H \leq 234$ pc) and $<h>=1900$ pc ($1561\leq h \leq 2280$ pc) respectively. This result would be useful to explain different numerical values claimed for those parameters obtained by different authors for the fields in different directions of the Galaxy.
