First Observation of a Three-Resonance Structure in $e^+e^-\rightarrow$Nonopen Charm Hadrons

Abstract: We report the measurement of the inclusive cross sections for $e^+e^-$$\rightarrow$nOCH (where nOCH denotes non-open charm hadrons) with improved precision at center-of-mass (c.m.) energies from 3.645 to 3.871 GeV. We observe three resonances: $\mathcal R(3760)$, $\mathcal R(3780)$, and $\mathcal R(3810)$ with significances of $8.1σ$, $13.7σ$, and $8.8σ$, respectively. We observe three resonances: $\mathcal R(3760)$, $\mathcal R(3780)$, and $\mathcal R(3810)$ with significances of $8.1σ$, $13.7σ$, and $8.8σ$, respectively. The $\mathcal R(3810)$ state is observed for the first time, while the $\mathcal R(3760)$ and $\mathcal R(3780)$ states are observed for the first time in the nOCH cross sections. Two sets of resonance parameters describe the energy-dependent line shape of the cross sections well. In set I [set II], the $\mathcal R(3810)$ state has mass $(3805.7 \pm 1.1 \pm 2.7)$ [$(3805.7 \pm 1.1 \pm 2.7)$] MeV/$c^2$, total width $(11.6 \pm 2.9 \pm 1.9)$ [$(11.5 \pm 2.8 \pm 1.9)$] MeV, and an electronic width multiplied by the nOCH decay branching fraction of $(10.9\pm 3.8\pm 2.5)$ [$(11.0\pm 3.4\pm 2.5)$] eV. In addition, we measure the branching fractions ${\mathcal B}[{\mathcal R}(3760)$$\rightarrow$nOCH$]=(25.2 \pm 16.1 \pm 30.4)\% [(6.4 \pm 4.8 \pm 7.7)\%]$ and ${\mathcal B}[\mathcal R(3780)$$\rightarrow$nOCH$]=(12.3 \pm 6.6 \pm 8.3)\% [(10.4 \pm 4.8 \pm 7.0)\%]$ for the first time. The $\mathcal R(3760)$ state can be interpreted as an open-charm (OC) molecular state, but containing a simple four-quark state component. Measurement of the branching fractions of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $Λ_{c}^{+}\to pη$ and $Λ_{c}^{+}\to pω$

Abstract: Based on 4.5 $\mbox{fb$^{-1}$}$ $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data collected with BESIII detector at seven energy points between 4.600 and 4.699 GeV, the branching fractions for $Λ_{c}^{+}\to pη$ and $Λ_{c}^{+}\to pω$ were measured by means of single-tag method. Flat cross sections around $4.63~\mathrm{GeV}$ are obtained and no indication of the resonant structure $Y(4630)$, as reported by Belle, is found. In addition, no oscillatory behavior is discerned in the $|G_{\mathrm{eff}}|$ energy-dependence of $Λ_{c}^{+}$, in contrast to what is seen for the proton and neutron cases. Analyzing the cross section together with the polar-angle distribution of the $Λ_{c}^{+}$ baryon at each energy point, the moduli of electric and magnetic form factors ($|G_{E}|$ and $|G_{M}|$) are extracted and separated. Studies of the decay $D^+_s\to K^+K^- μ^+ ν_μ$

Abstract: The $D^+_s\to K^+K^-μ^+ν_μ$ decay is studied based on 7.33 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies in the range from 4.128 to 4.226 GeV. The absolute branching fraction is measured as ${\mathcal B}(D^+_s\to φμ^+ν_μ) = (2.25\pm 0.09 \pm 0.07) \times10^{-2}$, the most precise measurement to date. Combining with the world average of… ▽ More The $D^+_s\to K^+K^-μ^+ν_μ$ decay is studied based on 7.33 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies in the range from 4.128 to 4.226 GeV. The absolute branching fraction is measured as ${\mathcal B}(D^+_s\to φμ^+ν_μ) = (2.25\pm 0.09 \pm 0.07) \times10^{-2}$, the most precise measurement to date. Combining with the world average of ${\mathcal B}(D^+_s\to φe^+ν_e)$, the ratio of the branching fractions obtained is$\frac{{\mathcal B}(D^+_s\to φμ^+ν_μ)}{{\mathcal B}(D^+_s\to φe^+ν_e)} = 0.94\pm0.08$, in agreement with lepton universality. By performing a partial wave analysis, the hadronic form factor ratios at $q^{2}=0$ are extracted, finding $r_{V}=\frac{V(0)}{A_{1}(0)}=1.58\pm0.17\pm0.02$ and $r_{2}=\frac{A_{2}(0)}{A_{1}(0)}=0.71\pm0.14\pm0.02$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. No significant $S$-wave contribution from $f_0(980)\to K^+K^-$ is found. The upper limit $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to f_0(980)μ^{+}ν_μ) \cdot{\mathcal B}(f_0(980)\to K^+K^-) < 5.45 \times 10^{-4}$ is set at 90\% confidence level. △ Less

Combining these results with the $\mathcal{B}(D^+\toηe^+ ν_e)$ and $\mathcal{B}(D^+\toη^\prime e^+ ν_e)$ obtained from previous BESIII measurements, the $η-η^\prime$ mixing angle in the quark flavor basis is determined to be $φ_{\rm P} = (40.0\pm2.0_{\rm stat}\pm0.6_{\rm syst})^\circ$. Moreover, from the fits to the partial decay rates of $D_s^+ \to ηe^+ ν_e$ and $D_s^+ \to η^\prime e^+ ν_e$, the products of the hadronic transition form factors $f_+^{η^{(\prime)}}(0)$ and the modulus of the $c\to s$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ are determined by using different hadronic transition form factor parametrizations. Based on the two-parameter series expansion, the products $f^η_+(0)|V_{cs}| = 0.4519\pm0.0071_{\rm stat}\pm0.0065_{\rm syst}$ and $f^{η^\prime}_+(0)|V_{cs}| = 0.525\pm0.024_{\rm stat}\pm0.009_{\rm syst}$ are extracted. All results determined in this work supersede those measured in the previous BESIII analyses based on the 3.19 fb$^{-1}$ subsample of data at 4.178 GeV. △ Less

Tests of lepton flavor universality using $Λ_c^+\rightarrow Λ\ell^+ν_{\ell}$ ($\ell=e, μ$) decays are reported for the first time, based on measurements of the differential decay rates and the forward-backward asymmetries in separate four-momentum transfer regions. The results are compatible with Standard Model predictions. Abstract: The spin and parity of the charmed mesons $D_{s}^{*+}$, $D^{*0}$ and $D^{*+}$ are determined for the first time to be $J^P=1^{-}$ with significances greater than 10$σ$ over other hypotheses of $2^{+}$ and $3^{-}$, using an $e^+e^-$ collision data sample with an integrated luminosity of 3.19 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 4.178 GeV. Abstract: The $J/ψ\to Ξ^0 \barΞ^{0}$ process and subsequent decays are investigated using $(10087 \pm 44)\times 10^6$ $J/ψ$ events collected at the BESIII experiment. The sequential decay also enables a separation of weak and strong phase differences, which are found for the first time to be $ξ_{P}-ξ_{S} = (0.0 \pm 1.7 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-2}$~rad and $δ_{P}-δ_{S} = (-1.3 \pm 1.7 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-2}$~rad, respectively. The $C\!P$-odd weak decay parameters of the decays $Σ^{+} \to n π^{+}$ ($α_{+}$) and $\barΣ^{-} \to \bar{n} π^{-}$ ($\barα_{-}$) are determined to be $-0.0565\pm0.0047_{\rm stat}\pm0.0022_{\rm syst}$ and $0.0481\pm0.0031_{\rm stat}\pm0.0019_{\rm syst}$, respectively. The decay parameter $\barα_{-}$ is measured for the first time, and the accuracy of $α_{+}$ is improved by a factor of four compared to the previous results. The simultaneously determined decay parameters allow the first precision $C\!P$ symmetry test for any hyperon decay with a neutron in the final state with the measurement of $A_{C\!P}=(α_{+}+\barα_{-})/(α_{+}-\barα_{-})=-0.080\pm0.052_{\rm stat}\pm0.028_{\rm syst}$. Assuming $C\!P$ conservation, the average decay parameter is determined as $\left< α_{+}\right>=(α_{+}- \barα_{-})/2 = -0.0506\pm0.0026_{\rm stat}\pm0.0019_{\rm syst}$, while the ratios $α_{+}/α_{0}$ and $\barα_{-}/\barα_{0}$ are $-0.0490\pm0.0032_{\rm stat}\pm0.0021_{\rm syst}$ and $-0.0571\pm0.0053_{\rm stat}\pm0.0032_{\rm syst}$, where $α_{0}$ and $\barα_{0}$ are the decay parameters of the decays $Σ^{+} \to p π^{0}$ and $\barΣ^{-} \to \bar{p} π^{0}$, respectively. △ Less

No significant $H$-dibaryon signal is observed in the $Ξ^-p$ final state. Abstract: Based on 4.5 fb$^{-1}$ data taken at seven center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.600 to 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the branching fractions of $Λ_{c}^{+}\rightarrowΣ^{+}+hadrons$ relative to $Λ_{c}^{+}\rightarrow Σ^+ π^+ π^-$. Combining with the world average branching fraction of $Λ_{c}^{+}\rightarrow Σ^+ π^+ π^-$, their branching fractions are measured… ▽ More Based on 4.5 fb$^{-1}$ data taken at seven center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.600 to 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the branching fractions of $Λ_{c}^{+}\rightarrowΣ^{+}+hadrons$ relative to $Λ_{c}^{+}\rightarrow Σ^+ π^+ π^-$. Combining with the world average branching fraction of $Λ_{c}^{+}\rightarrow Σ^+ π^+ π^-$, their branching fractions are measured to be $(0.377\pm0.042\pm0.018\pm0.021)\%$ for $Λ_{c}^{+}\rightarrowΣ^{+} K^{+} K^{-}$, $(0.200\pm0.023\pm0.010\pm0.011)\%$ for $Λ_{c}^{+}\rightarrowΣ^{+} K^{+} π^{-}$, $(0.414\pm0.080\pm0.029\pm0.023)\%$ for $Λ_{c}^{+}\rightarrowΣ^{+}φ$ and $(0.197\pm0.036\pm0.008\pm0.011)\%$ for $Λ_{c}^{+}\rightarrowΣ^{+}K^{+} K^{-}$(non-$φ$). In all the above results, the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic and the third are from external input of the branching fraction of $Λ_{c}^{+}\rightarrow Σ^+ π^+ π^-$. Since no signal for $Λ_{c}^{+}\rightarrowΣ^{+} K^{+} π^{-}π^{0}$ is observed, the upper limit of its branching fraction is determined to be 0.11\% at the 90$\%$ confidence level. △ Less

No indication of resonant production through an intermediate vector state $V$ is observed, and the upper limits on the product of the electronic width $Γ_{e^+e^-}$ and the branching fraction $Br(V\rightarrow φK \bar{K})$ of the processes $e^+e^- \to V \to φK^+ K^-$ and $e^+e^- \to V \to φK_S^0K_S^0$ at the $90\%$ confidence level are obtained for a large parameter space in resonance masses and widths. For the current world average mass and width of the $ψ(4230)$ of $m=4.2187$ GeV$/c^2$ and $Γ=44$ MeV, we set upper limits on the $φK^+ K^-$ and $φK_S^0K_S^0$ final states of 1.75 eV and 0.47 eV at the $90\%$ confidence level, respectively. △ Less

The dynamics of the $D_{s}^{+} \to f_{0}(980)e^{+}ν_{e}$ decay are studied with the simple pole parameterization of the hadronic form factor and the Flatté formula describing the $f_0(980)$ in the differential decay rate, and the product of the form factor $f^{f_0}_{+}(0)$ and the $c\to s$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ is determined for the first time to be $f^{f_0}_+(0)|V_{cs}|=0.504\pm0.017_{\rm stat}\pm0.035_{\rm syst}$. △ Less

The product of the $D_s^+$ decay constant $f_{D_s^+}$ and the CKM matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ is $f_{D_s^+}|V_{cs}| = (248.3\pm3.9_{\rm stat}\pm3.1_{\rm syst}\pm1.0_{\rm input})~\mathrm{MeV}$. Combining with the $|V_{cs}|$ value obtained from the Standard Model global fit or the $f_{D_s^+}$ from the lattice quantum chromodynamics, we determine $|V_{cs}| = 0.993\pm0.015_{\rm stat}\pm0.012_{\rm syst}\pm0.004_{\rm input}$ and $f_{D_s^+} = (255.0\pm4.0_{\rm stat}\pm3.2_{\rm syst}\pm1.0_{\rm input})~\text{MeV}$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second one is systematic and the third one is due to the input parameters, mainly the lifetime of $D_s^+$. Combining this branching fraction with the world averages of the measurements of the masses of $τ^+$ and $D_s^+$ as well as the lifetime of $D_s^+$, we extract the product of the decay constant of $D_s^+$ and the $c\to s$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element to be $f_{D_s^+}|V_{cs}|=(246.2\pm3.7_{\rm stat}\pm2.5_{\rm syst})~\mathrm{MeV}$. Taking $|V_{cs}|$ from a global fit in the standard model we obtain $f_{D_s^+}=(252.7\pm3.8_{\rm stat}\pm2.6_{\rm syst})$ MeV. Abstract: A precision measurement of the matrix elements for $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ and $η\toπ^0π^0π^0$ decays is performed using a sample of $(10087\pm44)\times10^6$ $J/ψ$ decays collected with the BESIII detector. The decay $J/ψ\to γη$ is used to select clean samples of 631,686 $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decays and 272,322 $η\toπ^0π^0π^0$ decays. The matrix elements for both channels are in reasonable agreement with previo… ▽ More A precision measurement of the matrix elements for $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ and $η\toπ^0π^0π^0$ decays is performed using a sample of $(10087\pm44)\times10^6$ $J/ψ$ decays collected with the BESIII detector. The decay $J/ψ\to γη$ is used to select clean samples of 631,686 $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decays and 272,322 $η\toπ^0π^0π^0$ decays. The matrix elements for both channels are in reasonable agreement with previous measurements. The non-zero $gX^2Y$ term for the decay mode $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ is confirmed, as reported by the KLOE Collaboration, while the other higher-order terms are found to be insignificant. Dalitz plot asymmetries in the $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decay are also explored and are found to be consistent with charge conjugation invariance. In addition, a cusp effect is investigated in the $η\toπ^0π^0π^0$ decay, and no obvious structure around the $π^+π^-$ mass threshold is observed. △ Less

The data samples used correspond to an integrated luminosity of $17.9\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ and were collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Three enhancements around 4.20, 4.47 and 4.67 GeV are visible. The resonances have masses of $4209.6\pm4.7\pm5.9\,{\rm MeV}/c^{2}$, $4469.1\pm26.2\pm3.6\,{\rm MeV}/c^{2}$ and $4675.3\pm29.5\pm3.5\,{\rm MeV}/c^{2}$ and widths of $81.6\pm17.8\pm9.0\,{\rm MeV}$, $246.3\pm36.7\pm9.4\,{\rm MeV}$, and $218.3\pm72.9\pm9.3\,{\rm MeV}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The first and third resonances are consistent with the $ψ(4230)$ and $ψ(4660)$ states, respectively, while the second one is compatible with the $ψ(4500)$ observed in the $e^{+}e^{-}\to K^{+}K^{-}J/ψ$ process. The moduli of the $\hatρ$ parameters have central values in a wide range from $0.4$ to $12.1$, which indicates substantial U-spin symmetry breaking. We present the fractional resonant contributions and average strong-phase parameters over regions of phase space for both $K_{\rm S}^0π^+π^-$ and $K_{\rm L}^0π^+π^-$ modes. We also report the ratio of the branching fractions between $K_{\rm L}^0π^+π^-$ and $K_{\rm S}^0π^+π^-$ decay modes and the $\mathit{CP}$-even fraction of the $K_{\rm L}^0π^+π^-$ state calculated using the U-spin breaking parameters. △ Less

We explored the differential cross sections of the reaction $e^+e^- \rightarrow \bar{n}n$ with data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII accelerator, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 354.6 pb$^{-1}$ in total at twelve center-of-mass energies between $\sqrt{s} = 2.0 - 2.95$ GeV. A relative uncertainty of 18% and 12% for the electric and magnetic form factors, respectively, is achieved at $\sqrt{s} = 2.3935$ GeV. Our results are comparable in accuracy to those from electron scattering in the comparable space-like (negative $q^2$) region of four-momentum transfer. The electromagnetic form factor ratio $R_{\rm em}\equiv |G_E|/|G_M|$ is within the uncertainties close to unity. We compare our result on $|G_E|$ and $|G_M|$ to recent model predictions, and the measurements in the space-like region to test the analyticity of electromagnetic form factors. △ Less

Abstract: We present a new method for the measurements of photonuclear reaction flux-weighted average cross sections and isomeric ratios using a laser-driven bremsstrahlung $γ$-ray source. An ultra-bright ultra-fast 60$\,\thicksim\,$250 MeV bremsstrahlung $γ$-ray source was established using the 200 TW laser facility in the Compact Laser Plasma Accelerator Laboratory, Peking University, which could cover th… ▽ More We present a new method for the measurements of photonuclear reaction flux-weighted average cross sections and isomeric ratios using a laser-driven bremsstrahlung $γ$-ray source. An ultra-bright ultra-fast 60$\,\thicksim\,$250 MeV bremsstrahlung $γ$-ray source was established using the 200 TW laser facility in the Compact Laser Plasma Accelerator Laboratory, Peking University, which could cover the energy range from knocking out neutrons to producing pions. Stable quasi-monoenergetic electron beams were generated via laser wakefield acceleration with a charge of 300$\,\thicksim\,$600 pC per shot. The averaged $γ$-ray intensities ($\geqslant$8 MeV) were higher than 10$^{8}$ per shot and the instantaneous intensities can reach above 10$^{19}$ s$^{-1}$ with a duration time about 6.7 ps. $^{65}$Cu($γ,\,n$)$^{64}$Cu and $^{27}$Al($γ,\,x$)$^{24}$Na reactions were used as $γ$-ray flux monitors in the experiments. The flux-weighted average cross sections and isomeric ratios of $^{197}$Au($γ,\,xn;\,x\,=\,1\thicksim9$) reactions were analyzed through activation measurements. The results showed good agreement with previous works and proved this method to be accurate. The $^{197}$Au($γ,\,xn;\,x\,=\,7\thicksim\,9$) reaction cross sections were first achieved with the highest threshold energy of 71.410 MeV. Theoretical cross sections of TALYS 1.9 were calculated to compare with experiment results. This method offered a unique way of gaining insight into photonuclear reaction research, especially for short-lived isomers which extremely lack experimental data. △ Less

The fit reveals a structure with the mass of $M=2178\pm20\pm5~{\rm MeV}/c^2$ and the width of $\varGamma=140\pm36\pm16~{\rm MeV}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. △ Less

Nuclear multipole responses from chiral effective field theory interaction

Abstract: We probe nuclear multipole resonances in the framework of the random-phase approximation by using the interaction obtained from the chiral effective field theory. The three-nucleon force is included in a form of the in-medium two-nucleon interaction which was derived from the chiral three-nucleon force. The isoscalar monopole, isoscalar dipole, isovector dipole and isoscalar quadrupole resonances… ▽ More We probe nuclear multipole resonances in the framework of the random-phase approximation by using the interaction obtained from the chiral effective field theory. The three-nucleon force is included in a form of the in-medium two-nucleon interaction which was derived from the chiral three-nucleon force. The isoscalar monopole, isoscalar dipole, isovector dipole and isoscalar quadrupole resonances of the closed-shell $^{56,68,78}$Ni have been investigated. The calculations reasonably reproduce the experimental multipole resonances of $^{56,68}$Ni, and well describe the pygmy dipole resonance and dipole polarizability measured in $^{68}$Ni. The multipole resonances of $^{78}$Ni, including pygmy dipole resonance and dipole polarizability, are predicted. The detailed effects of the tensor force and three-body force are analyzed by dissecting the chiral interaction. We find that in general the tensor force effect on electric giant resonances is not as significant as the effect from the three-body force, although the tensor force provides more than half of the binding energy. The effect from three-body force is strong in light nuclei. Particularly, three-body force is crucial for the formation of the pygmy resonance in calculations. △ Less

Deflection of a reflected intense circularly polarized light beam induced by asymmetric radiation pressure

The reflected beam deflects out of the plane of incidence with a deflection angle up to several milliradians, when a non-linear polarized laser, with the intensity $I_0\sim10^{19}$W/cm$^2$ and duration around tens of femtoseconds, is obliquely incident and reflected by an overdense plasma target. This effect originates from the asymmetric radiation pressure caused by spin angular momentum of the laser photons. The dependence of the deflection angle of a Gaussian-type laser on the parameters of laser pulse and plasma foil is theoretically derived, which is also confirmed by three dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of circularly polarized laser beams with the different intensity and pulse duration. △ Less

A New Injection and Acceleration Scheme of Positrons in the Laser-Plasma Bubble Regime

Strong energy enhancement in a laser-driven plasma-based accelerator through stochastic friction

In this work, we demonstrate that this intuitive picture loses validity in nonlinear quantum electrodynamics, exemplified in a scenario where spatially random friction counter-intuiti… ▽ More Conventionally, friction is understood as an efficient dissipation mechanism depleting a physical system of energy as an unavoidable feature of any realistic device involving moving parts, e.g., in mechanical brakes. In this work, we demonstrate that this intuitive picture loses validity in nonlinear quantum electrodynamics, exemplified in a scenario where spatially random friction counter-intuitively results in a highly directional energy flow. This peculiar behavior is caused by radiation friction, i.e., the energy loss of an accelerated charge due to the emission of radiation. We demonstrate analytically and numerically how radiation friction can enhance the performance of a specific class of laser-driven particle accelerators. We find the unexpected directional energy boost to be due to the particles' energy being reduced through friction whence the driving laser can accelerate them more efficiently. In a quantitative case we find the energy of the laser-accelerated particles to be enhanced by orders of magnitude. △ Less

Radiation rebound and Quantum Splash in Electron-Laser Collision

Utilizing the theoretical analyses and three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations, we demonstrate that electron reflection, induced by the RR in a head-on collision with an intense laser pulse, can provide pronounced signatures to discern the classical and quantum RR. In the classical regime, there is a precipitous threshold of laser intensity to achieve the whole electron bunch rebound. However, this threshold becomes a gradual transition in the quantum regime, where the electron bunch is quasi-isotropically scattered by the laser pulse and this process resembles a water splash. Leveraged on the derived dependence of classical radiation rebound on the parameters of laser pulses and electron bunches, a practical detecting method is proposed to distinguish the quantum discrete recoil and classical continuous RR force. △ Less

Forward sliding-swing acceleration: electron acceleration by high-intensity lasers in strong plasma magnetic fields

The transverse laser field efficiently accelerates electrons in the presence of such a field that confines the transverse motion and deflects the electrons in the forward direction, establishing the novel forward-sliding swing acceleration mechanism. Its advantage is a threshold rather than resonant behavior, accelerating electrons to high energies for sufficiently strong laser-driven currents. We study the electrons' dynamics by a simplified model analytically, specifically deriving simple relations between the current, the particles' initial transverse momenta and the laser's field strength classifying the energy gain. We confirm the model's predictions by numerical simulations, indicating Mega ampere-level threshold currents and energy gains two orders of magnitude higher than achievable without the magnetic field. △ Less

Highly collimated electron acceleration by longitudinal laser fields in a hollow-core target

We propose a conceptually different approach to di… ▽ More The substantial angular divergence of electron beams produced by direct laser acceleration is often considered as an inherent negative feature of the mechanism. The divergence however arises primarily because the standard approach relies on transverse electron oscillations and their interplay with the transverse electric fields of the laser pulse. We propose a conceptually different approach to direct laser acceleration that leverages longitudinal laser electric fields that are present in a tightly focused laser beam. A structured hollow-core target is used to enhance the longitudinal fields and maintain them over a distance much longer than the Rayleigh length by guiding the laser pulse. Electrons are injected by the transverse laser electric field into the channel and then they are accelerated forward by the pulse, creating an electron current. The forces from electric and magnetic fields of this electron population compensate each other, creating a favorable configuration without a strong restoring force. We use two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations to demonstrate that a low divergence energetic electron beam with an opening angle of less than 5$^\circ$ can be generated in this configuration. Most of the energy is transferred to the electrons by the longitudinal laser electric field and, given a sufficient acceleration distance, super-ponderomotive energies can be realized without sacrificing the collimation. △ Less
