High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $Δ_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $Δφ$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results better quantify how the yield of low-$p_T$ associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects.

The larger orbital overlap integral and the extended wavefunction of 5d electrons in the perovskite KOsO3 allow to explore physics from the regime where Mott and Hund's rule couplings dominate to the state where the multiple interactions are on equal footing. We demonstrate an exotic magnetic ordering phase found by neutron powder diffraction along with physical properties via a suite of measurements including magnetic and transport properties, differential scanning calorimetry, and specific heat, which provide comprehensive information for a system at the crossover from localized to itinerant electronic behavior.

We report a phenomenological magneto-structural model based on competing free-energy terms that couple either polar or chiral distortions in cubic quadruple perovskites, depending on the global direction of magnetic moments. The model naturally explains why some compounds in this material system host magnetically-induced ferroelectricity at low temperature, while others such as CaMn$_3$(Cr$_3$Mn)O$_{12}$, which we characterise experimentally, do not. Importantly, our results suggest a new approach towards develo** an applied multiferroic functionality, and can be generalised to other multi-sublattice systems where the magnetic interaction between sublattices is prohibited by spatial inversion.

Our neutron powder scattering measurements show that both the $x = 0.23$ and $x = 0.16$ samples separate into two distinct magnetic phases; below T$_{1}$ = 120 $\pm$ 10 K the system undergoes a transition from a paramagnetic phase to a phase characterised by short range antiferromagnetic clusters contained in a paramagnetic matrix, and below T$_{2}$ $\sim$ 65 K, the system is composed of well correlated long range collinear ferrimagnetic order, punctuated by short range antiferromagnetic clusters. A sharp increase in the antiferromagnetic phase fraction is observed below $\sim$ 33 K, concomitant with a decrease in the ferrimagnetic phase fraction. Our results demonstrate that the theoretically proposed AFM phase is stabilised in the [Y$_{2-x}$Mn$_x$]MnMnMn$_4$O$_{12}$ manganites in the presence of dominant B-B exchange interactions, as predicted.

In representation theory of graded Iwanaga-Gorenstein algebras, tilting theory of the stable category $\underline{\mathsf{CM}}^{\mathbb{Z}} A$ of graded Cohen-Macaulay modules plays a prominent role. In this paper we study the following two central problems of tilting theory of $\underline{\mathsf{CM}}^{\mathbb{Z}} A$ in the case where $A$ is finite dimensional: (1) Does $\underline{\mathsf{CM}}^{\mathbb{Z}} A$ have a tilting object? (2) Does the endomorphism algebras of tilting objects in $\underline{\mathsf{CM}}^{\mathbb{Z}} A$ have finite global dimension? To the problem (2) we give the complete answer. We show that the endomorphism algebra of any tilting object in $\underline{\mathsf{CM}}^{\mathbb{Z}}A$ has finite global dimension. To the problem (1) we give a partial answer. For this purpose, first we introduce an invariant $g(A)$ for a finite dimensional graded algebra $A$. Then, we prove that in the case where $A$ is 1-Iwanaga-Gorenstein, an inequality for $g(A)$ gives a sufficient condition that a specific Cohen-Macaulay module $V$ becomes a tilting object in the stable category. As an application, we study the existence of tilting objects in $\underline{\mathsf{CM}}^{\mathbb{Z}}Π(Q)_w$ where $Π(Q)_w$ is the truncated preprojective algebra of a quiver $Q$ associated to $w\in W_Q$. We prove that if the underling graph of $Q$ is tree, then $\underline{\mathsf{CM}}^{\mathbb{Z}}Π(Q)_w$ has a tilting object.

The PHENIX collaboration presents a systematic study of $π^0$ production from $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0%--100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0%--100% collisions, the nuclear modification factors, $R_{xA}$, are consistent with unity for $p_T$ above 8 GeV/$c$, but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high-$p_T$-$π^0$ production, the nucleons in the $d$ and $^3$He interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counter intuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower $p_T$ resemble the Cronin effect -- an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as $p$$+$Au $>$ $d$$+$Au $>$ $^{3}$He$+$Au $>$ $p$$+$Al. For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower $p_T$.

We investigate the physical properties of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice material BaNd$_2$ZnO$_5$. Neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order below 1.65 K. The magnetic order is found to be a 2-$\boldsymbol{Q}$ magnetic structure with the magnetic moments lying in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice planes comprising the tetragonal crystal structure of BaNd$_2$ZnO$_5$. The ordered moment for this structure is 1.9(1) $μ_B$ per Nd ion. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal that the crystal field ground state doublet is well separated from the first excited state at 8 meV. The crystal field Hamiltonian is determined through simultaneous refinement of models with both the LS coupling and intermediate coupling approximations to the inelastic neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility data. The ground state doublet indicates that the magnetic moments lie primarily in the basal plane with magnitude consistent with the size of the determined ordered moment.

Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$ is a newly synthesized polar metal in which inversion symmetry is broken by the magnetic frustration in an antiferromagnetic ordering of Co and Os sublattices. The coupled magnetic and structural transition occurs at 45 K at ambient pressure. Here we perform transport measurements and first-principles calculations to study the pressure effects on the magnetic/structural coupled transition of Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$. Experimentally we monitor the resistivity anomaly at $T_N$ under various pressures up to 11 GPa in a cubic anvil cell apparatus. We find that $T_N$ determined from the resistivity anomaly first increases quickly with pressure in a large slope of $dT_N/dP$ = +6.8(8) K/GPa for $P < 4$ GPa, and then increases with a much reduced slope of 1.8(4) K/GPa above 4 GPa. Our first-principles calculations suggest that the observed discontinuity of $dT_N/dP$ around 4 GPa may be attributed to the vanishing of Os magnetic moment under pressure. Pressure substantially reduces the Os moment and completely suppresses it above a critical value, which relieves the magnetic frustration in the antiferromagnetic ordering of Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$. The Co and Os polar distortions decrease with the increasing pressure and simultaneously vanish at the critical pressure. Therefore above the critical pressure a new centrosymmetric antiferromagnetic state emerges in Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$, distinct from the one under ambient pressure, thus showing a discontinuity in $dT_N/dP$.

Powder neutron diffraction experiments have been employed to establish the effects of site-selective magnetic dilution in the Sm2MnMnMn4-x Tix O12 A-site columnar ordered quadruple perovskite manganites (x = 1, x = 2 and x = 3). We show that in all three compositions the Mn ions adopt a collinear ferrimagnetic structure below 27 K, 62 K and 34 K, respectively. An unexpected increase in the ordering temperature was observed between the x = 1 and x = 2 samples, which indicates a considerable departure from mean field behaviour. This result is corroborated by large reductions in the theoretical ground state magnetic moments observed across the series, which indicate the presence of spin fluctuations and or disorder. We show that long range magnetic order in the x = 3 sample, which occurs below the percolation threshold for B-B exchange, can only be understood to arise if magnetic order in Sm2MnMnMn4-xTixO12 is mediated via both A-B and B-B exchange, hence confirming the importance of A-B exchange interactions in these materials. Finally we show that site-selective magnetic dilution enables the tuning of a ferrimagnetic compensation point and the introduction of temperature-induced magnetization reversal.

We report on the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of two new double-perovskites synthesized under high pressure; Pb2CaOsO6 and Pb2ZnOsO6. Upon cooling below 80 K, Pb2CaOsO6 simultaneously undergoes a metal--insulator transition and develops antiferromagnetic order. Pb2ZnOsO6, on the other hand, remains a paramagnetic metal down to 2 K. The key difference between the two compounds lies in their crystal structure. The Os atoms in Pb2ZnOsO6 are arranged on an approximately face-centred cubic lattice with strong antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange couplings. The geometrical frustration inherent to this lattice prevents magnetic order from forming down to the lowest temperatures. In contrast, the unit cell of Pb2CaOsO6 is heavily distorted up to at least 500 K, including antiferroelectric-like displacements of the Pb and O atoms despite metallic conductivity above 80 K. This distortion relieves the magnetic frustration, facilitating magnetic order which in turn drives the metal--insulator transition. Our results suggest that the phase transition in Pb2CaOsO6 is spin-driven, and could be a rare example of a Slater transition.

Metallic LiOsO$_3$ undergoes a continuous ferroelectric-like structural phase transition below $T_c$ = 140 K to realize a polar metal. To understand the microscopic interactions that drive this transition, we study its critical behavior above $T_c$ via electromechanical coupling - distortions of the lattice induced by short-range dipole-dipole correlations arising from Li off-center displacements. By map** the full angular distribution of second harmonic electric-quadrupole radiation from LiOsO$_3$ and performing a simplified hyper-polarizable bond model analysis, we uncover subtle symmetry-preserving lattice distortions over a broad temperature range extending from $T_c$ up to around 230 K, characterized by non-uniform changes in the short and long Li-O bond lengths. Such an extended region of critical fluctuations may explain anomalous features reported in specific heat and Raman scattering data, and suggests the presence of competing interactions that are not accounted for in existing theoretical treatments. More broadly, our results showcase how electromechanical effects serve as a probe of critical behavior near inversion symmetry breaking transitions in metals.

We present direct photon-hadron correlations in 200 GeV/A Au$+$Au, $d$$+$Au and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, for direct photon $p_T$ from 5--12 GeV/$c$, collected by the PHENIX Collaboration in the years from 2006 to 2011. We observe no significant modification of jet fragmentation in $d$$+$Au collisions, indicating that cold nuclear matter effects are small or absent. Hadrons carrying a large fraction of the quark's momentum are suppressed in Au$+$Au compared to $p$$+$$p$ and $d$$+$Au. As the momentum fraction decreases, the yield of hadrons in Au$+$Au increases to an excess over the yield in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. The excess is at large angles and at low hadron $p_T$ and is most pronounced for hadrons associated with lower momentum direct photons. Comparison to theoretical calculations suggests that the hadron excess arises from medium response to energy deposited by jets.

Room-temperature ferrimagnetism was discovered for the anti-site-disordered perovskite Ca2MnOsO6 with Tc = 305 K. Ca2MnOsO6 crystallizes into an orthorhombic structure with a space group of Pnma, in which Mn and Os share the oxygen-coordinated-octahedral site at an equal ratio without a noticeable ordered arrangement. The material is electrically semiconducting with variable-range-hop** behavior. X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirmed the trivalent state of the Mn and the pentavalent state of the Os. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy reveals that the Mn and Os magnetic moments are aligned antiferromagnetically, thereby classifying the material as a ferrimagnet which is in accordance with band structure calculations. It is intriguing that the magnetic signal of the Os is very weak, and that the observed total magnetic moment is primarily due to the Mn. The Tc = 305 K is the second highest in the material category of so-called disordered ferromagnets such as CaRu1-xMnxO3, SrRu1-xCrxO3, and CaIr1-xMnxO3, and hence, may support the development of spintronic oxides with relaxed requirements concerning the anti-site disorder of the magnetic ions.

Polycrystalline Sr$_3$OsO$_6$, which is an ordered double-perovskite insulator, is synthesized via solid-state reaction under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions of 1200 $^\circ$C and 6 GPa. The synthesis enables us to conduct a comparative study of the bulk form of Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ toward revealing the driving mechanism of 1000 K ferromagnetism, which has recently been discovered for epitaxially grown Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ films. Unlike the film, the bulk is dominated by antiferromagnetism rather than ferromagnetism. Therefore, robust ferromagnetic order appears only when Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ is under the influence of interfaces. A specific heat capacity of 39.6(9) 10$^{-3}$ J mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ is found at low temperatures ($<$17 K). This value is remarkably high, suggesting the presence of possible fermionic-like excitations at the magnetic ground state. Although the bulk and film forms of Sr$_3$OsO$_6$ share the same lattice basis and electrically insulating state, the magnetism is entirely different between them.

We report a systematic NMR study on [Sr$_4$Sc$_2$O$_6$]Fe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$, for which the local lattice parameters of the iron-pnictogen (Fe$Pn$) layer are similar to those of the series LaFe(As$_{1-x'}$P$_{x'}$)O, which exhibit two segregated antiferromagnetic (AFM) order phases, AFM1 at $x'$=0-0.2 and AFM2 at $x'$=0.4-0.7. Our results revealed that the parent AFM1 phase at $x$=0 disappears at $x$=0.3-0.4, corresponding to a pnictogen height ($h_{pn}$) from the Fe-plane of 1.3-1.32 Å, which is similar to that of LaFe(As$_{1-x'}$P$_{x'}$)O and various parent Fe-pnictides. By contrast, the AFM2 order reported for LaFe(As$_{0.4}$P$_{0.6}$)O does not appear at $x\sim$0.8, although the local lattice parameters of the Fe$Pn$ layer and the microscopic electronic states are quite similar. Despite the absence of the {\it static} AFM2 order, reemergent {\it dynamical} AFM spin fluctuations were observed at approximately $x\sim$0.8, which can be attributed to the instability of the AFM2 phase. We suggest this re-enhancement of AFM spin fluctuations to play a significant role in enhancing the $T_c$ to 17 K for $x$=0.8-1. Finally, we discuss the universality and diversity of the complicated magnetic ground states from a microscopic point of view, including the difference in the origins of the AFM1 and AFM2 phases, and their relations with the high superconducting transitions in Fe-pnictides.

Over 50 years ago, Anderson and Blount proposed that ferroelectric-like structural phase transitions may occur in metals, despite the expected screening of the Coulomb interactions that often drive polar transitions. Recently, theoretical treatments have suggested that such transitions require the itinerant electrons be decoupled from the soft transverse optical phonons responsible for polar order. However, this decoupled electron mechanism (DEM) has yet to be experimentally observed. Here we utilize ultrafast spectroscopy to uncover evidence of the DEM in LiOsO$_3$, the first known band metal to undergo a thermally driven polar phase transition ($T_c$ =140 K). We demonstrate that intra-band photo-carriers relax by selectively coupling to only a subset of the phonon spectrum, leaving as much as 60 % of the lattice heat capacity decoupled. This decoupled heat capacity is shown to be consistent with a previously undetected and partially displacive TO polar mode, indicating the DEM in LiOsO$_3$.

Using x-ray absorption (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy at the Ir-$L_{2,3}$ edges, we found a nearly zero orbital contribution to the magnetic moment and thus an apparent breakdown of the $J_{eff}=0$ ground state. By carrying out also XAS and XMCD experiments at the Co-$L_{2,3}$ edges and by performing detailed full atomic multiplet calculations to simulate all spectra, we discovered that the compound consists of about 90% Ir$^{5+}$ ($J_{eff}=0$) and Co$^{3+}$ ($S=2$) and 10% Ir$^{6+}$ ($S=3/2$) and Co$^{2+}$ ($S=3/2$). The magnetic signal of this minority Ir$^{6+}$ component is almost equally strong as that of the main Ir$^{5+}$ component. We infer that there is a competition between the Ir$^{5+}$-Co$^{3+}$ and the Ir$^{6+}$-Co$^{2+}$ configurations in this stoichiometric compound.

The absence of inversion symmetry is very uncommon in metals, particularly metallic oxides. In contrast to the recently reported ferroelectric-like structural transition in LiOsO$_3$, the phase transition in Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$ is driven by a long-range collinear antiferromagnetic order, with propagation vector $\textbf{k} = (\frac{1}{2},0,\frac{1}{2})$, which relieves the frustration associated with the symmetry of themagnetic exchanges. This magnetically-driven loss of inversion symmetry represents a new frontier in the search for novel metallic behavior.

We present the magnetic structure of $\mathrm{TmMn_3O_6}$, solved via neutron powder diffraction - the first such study of any $R\mathrm{Mn_3O_6}$ A-site columnar-ordered quadruple perovskite to be reported. We demonstrate that long range magnetic order develops below 74 K, and at 28 K a spin-flop transition occurs driven by $f$-$d$ exchange and rare earth single ion anisotropy. In both magnetic phases the magnetic structure may be described as a collinear ferrimagnet, contrary to conventional theories of magnetic order in the manganite perovskites. Instead, we show that these magnetic structures can be understood to arise due to ferro-orbital order, the A, A$'$ and A$''$ site point symmetry, $mm2$, and the dominance of A-B exchange over both A-A and B-B exchange, which together are unique to the $R\mathrm{Mn_3O_6}$ perovskites.

Na$_{2}$OsO$_{4}$ is an unusual quantum material that, in contrast to the common 5${d}^{2}$ oxides with spins = 1, owns a magnetically silent ground state with spin = 0 and a band gap at Fermi level attributed to a distortion in the OsO$_{6}$ octahedral sites. In this semiconductor, our low-temperature electrical transport measurements indicate an anomaly at 6.3 K with a power-law behavior inclining through the semiconductor-to-metal transition observed at 23 GPa. Even more peculiarly, we discover that before this transition, the material becomes more insulating instead of merely turning into a metal according to the conventional wisdom. To investigate the underlying mechanisms, we applied experimental and theoretical methods to examine the electronic and crystal structures comprehensively, and conclude that the enhanced insulating state at high pressure originates from the enlarged distortion of the OsO$_{6}$. It is such a distortion that widens the band gap and decreases the electron occupancy in Os's ${t}_{2g}$ orbital through an interplay of the lattice, charge, and orbital in the material, which is responsible for the changes observed in our experiments.

We discuss finitely graded Iwanaga-Gorenstein (IG) algebras $A$ and representation theory of their (graded) Cohen-Macaulay (CM) modules. By quasi-Veronese algebra construction, in principle, we may reduce our study to the case where $A$ is a trivial extension algebra $A = Λ\oplus C$ with the grading $ \text{deg} Λ= 0, \ \text{deg} C = 1$. In the previous study, we gave a necessary and sufficient condition that $A$ is IG in terms of $Λ$ and $C$ by using derived tensor products and derived Homs. For simplicity, we assume that $Λ$ is of finite global dimension in the sequel. In this paper, we show that the condition that $A$ is IG, has a triangulated categorical interpretation. We prove that if $A$ is IG, then the graded stable category $\underline{\mathsf{CM}}^{\Bbb{Z}} A$ of CM-modules is realized as an admissible subcategory of the derived category $\mathsf{D}^{\mathrm{b}}(\text{mod } Λ)$. As a corollary, we deduce that the Grothendieck group $K_{0}(\underline{\mathsf{CM}}^{\Bbb{Z}} A)$ is free of finite rank.
We give several applications. Among other things, for a path algebra $Λ= \Bbb{k} Q$ of an $A_{2}$ or $A_{3}$ quiver Q, we give a complete list of $Λ$-$Λ$-bimodule $C$ such that $Λ\oplus C$ is IG (resp. of finite global dimension) by using the triangulated categorical interpretation mentioned above.

Happel constructed a fully faithful functor $\mathcal{H} :\mathsf{D}^{\mathrm{b}}(\text{mod} \ Λ) \to \underline{\text{mod}}^{\Bbb{Z}} \ \text{T}(Λ)$ for a finite dimensional algebra $Λ$. He also showed that this functor $\mathcal{H}$ gives an equivalence precisely when $\text{gldim } Λ< \infty$. Thus if $\mathcal{H}$ gives an equivalence, then it provides a canonical tilting object $\mathcal{H} (Λ)$ of $\underline{\text{mod}}^{\mathbb{Z}} \ \text{T}(Λ)$.
In this paper we generalize Happel's functor $\mathcal{H}$ in the case where $\text{T}(Λ)$ is replaced with a finitely graded IG algebra $A$. We study when this functor is fully faithful or gives an equivalence. For this purpose we introduce the notion of homologically well-graded (hwg) IG-algebra, which can be characterized as an algebra posses a homological symmetry which, a posteriori, guarantee that the algebra is IG. We prove that hwg IG-algebras is precisely the class of finitely graded IG-algebras that Happel's functor is fully faithful. We also identify the class that Happel's functor gives an equivalence. As a consequence of our result, we see that if $\mathcal{H}$ gives an equivalence, then it provides a canonical tilting object $\mathcal{H}(T)$ of $\underline{\text{CM}}^{\Bbb{Z}} A$. For some special classes of finitely graded IG algebras, our tilting objects $\mathcal{H}(T)$ coincide with tilting object constructed in previous works.

We report a neutron powder diffraction study of $R$Mn$_7$O$_{12}$ quadruple perovskite manganites with $R$ = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, and Eu. We show that in all measured compounds concomitant magnetic ordering of the $A$ and $B$ manganese sublattices occurs on cooling below the N$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$el temperature. The respective magnetic structures are collinear, with one uncompensated Mn$^{3+}$ moment per formula unit as observed in bulk magnetisation measurements. We show that both LaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ and NdMn$_7$O$_{12}$ undergo a second magnetic phase transition at low temperature, which introduces a canting of the $B$ site sublattice moments that is commensurate in LaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ and incommensurate in NdMn$_7$O$_{12}$. This spin canting is consistent with a magnetic instability originating in the $B$ site orbital order. Furthermore, NdMn$_7$O$_{12}$ displays a third magnetic phase transition at which long range ordering of the Nd sublattice modifies the periodicity of the incommensurate spin canting. Our results demonstrate a rich interplay between transition metal magnetism, orbital order, and the crystal lattice, which may be fine tuned by cation substitution and rare earth magnetism.

LiOsO$_3$ undergoes a continuous transition from a centrosymmetric $R\bar{3}c$ structure to a polar $R3c$ structure at $T_s=140$~K. By combining transport measurements and first-principles calculations, we find that $T_s$ is enhanced by applied pressure, and it reaches a value of $\sim$250~K at $\sim$6.5~GPa. The enhancement is due to the fact that the polar $R3c$ structure of LiOsO$_3$ has a smaller volume than the centrosymmetric $R\bar{3}c$ structure. Pressure generically favors the structure with the smallest volume, and therefore further stabilizes the polar $R3c$ structure over the $R\bar{3}c$ structure, leading to the increase in $T_s$.

There are several peculiar long-period dwarf-nova like objects, which show rare, low-amplitude outbursts with highly ionized emission lines. 1SWASP J162117$+$441254, BD Pav, and V364 Lib belong to this kind of objects. Some researchers even doubt whether 1SWASP J1621 and V364 Lib have the same nature as normal dwarf novae. We studied the peculiar outbursts in these three objects via our optical photometry and spectroscopy, and performed numerical modeling of their orbital variations to investigate their properties. We found that their outbursts lasted for a long interval (a few tens of days), and that slow rises in brightness were commonly observed during the early stage of their outbursts. Our analyses and numerical modeling suggest that 1SWASP J1621 has a very high inclination, close to 90 deg, plus a faint hot spot. Although BD Pav seems to have a slightly lower inclination ($\sim$75 deg), the other properties are similar to those in 1SWASP J1621. On the other hand, V364 Lib appears to have a massive white dwarf, a hot companion star, and a low inclination ($\sim$35 deg). In addition, these three objects possibly have low transfer rate and/or large disks originating from the long orbital periods. We find that these properties of the three objects can explain their infrequent and low-amplitude outbursts within the context of the disk instability model in normal dwarf novae without strong magnetic field. In addition, we suggest that the highly-ionized emission lines in outburst are observed due to a high inclination and/or a massive white dwarf. More instances of this class of object may be unrecognized, since their unremarkable outbursts can be easily overlooked.

The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum ($0.4<p_T<3$ GeV/$c$) direct-photon yields from Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=39 and 62.4 GeV. For both beam energies the direct-photon yields are substantially enhanced with respect to expectations from prompt processes, similar to the yields observed in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200. Analyzing the photon yield as a function of the experimental observable $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ reveals that the low-momentum ($>$1\,GeV/$c$) direct-photon yield $dN_γ^{\rm dir}/dη$ is a smooth function of $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ and can be well described as proportional to $(dN_{\rm ch}/dη)^α$ with $α{\approx}1.25$. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different, $A$$+$$A$ collision systems. At a given beam energy the scaling also holds for high $p_T$ ($>5$\,GeV/$c$) but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield.

The temperature dependence of the excitation spectrum in NaOsO$_{\text{3}}$ through its metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) at 410 K has been investigated using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Os L$_{\text{3}}$ edge. High resolution ($ΔE \sim$ 56 meV) measurements show that the well-defined, low energy magnons in the insulating state weaken and dampen upon approaching the metallic state. Concomitantly, a broad continuum of excitations develops which is well described by the magnetic fluctuations of a nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid. By revealing the continuous evolution of the magnetic quasiparticle spectrum as it changes its character from itinerant to localized, our results provide unprecedented insight into the nature of the MIT in NaOsO$_{\text{3}}$.

5d transition metal oxides offer new opportunities to test our understanding of the interplay of correlation effects and spin-orbit interactions in materials in the absence of a single dominant interaction. The subtle balance between solid-state interactions can result in new mechanisms that minimize the interaction energy, and in material properties of potential use for applications. We focus here on the 5d transition metal oxide NaOsO3, a strong candidate for the realization of a magnetically driven transition from a metallic to an insulating state exploiting the so-called Slater mechanism. Experimental results are derived from non-resonant and resonant x-ray single crystal diffraction at the Os L-edges. A change in the crystallographic symmetry does not accompany the metal-insulator transition in the Slater mechanism and, indeed, we find no evidence of such a change in NaOsO3. An equally important experimental observation is the emergence of the (300) Bragg peak in the resonant condition with the onset of magnetic order. The intensity of this space-group forbidden Bragg peak continuously increases with decreasing temperature in line with the square of intensity observed for an allowed magnetic Bragg peak. Our main experimental results, the absence of crystal symmetry breaking and the emergence of a space-group forbidden Bragg peak with develo** magnetic order, support the use of the Slater mechanism to interpret the metal-insulator transition in NaOsO3. We successfully describe our experimental results with simulations of the electronic structure and, also, with an atomic model based on the established symmetry of the crystal and magnetic structure.

Its thick subcategory given as the stable category of $CM_0^ZR$ is central in representation theory since it enjoys Auslander-Reiten-Serre duality and has almost split triangles. In the case $dim R=1$, we prove that the stable category of $CM_0^ZR$ always admits a silting object, and that it admits a tilting object if and only if either $R$ is regular or the $a$-invariant of $R$ is non-negative.

We present measurements of azimuthal correlations of charged hadron pairs in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV Au$+$Au collisions for the trigger and associated particle transverse-momentum ranges of $1<p_T^t<10$~GeV/$c$ and $0.5<p_T^a<10$~GeV/$c$. After subtraction of an underlying event using a model that includes higher-order azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$, $v_3$, and $v_4$, the away-side yield of the highest trigger-\pt ($p_T^t>4$~GeV/$c$) correlations is suppressed compared to that of correlations measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. At the lowest associated particle $p_T$ ($0.5<p_T^a<1$ GeV/$c$), the away-side shape and yield are modified relative to those in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. These observations are consistent with the scenario of radiative-jet energy loss. For the low-$p_T$ trigger correlations ($2<p_T^t<4$ GeV/$c$), a finite away-side yield exists and we explore the dependence of the shape of the away-side within the context of an underlying-event model. Correlations are also studied differentially versus event-plane angle $Ψ_2$ and $Ψ_3$. The angular correlations show an asymmetry when selecting the sign of the difference between the trigger-particle azimuthal angle and the $Ψ_2$ event plane. This asymmetry and the measured suppression of the pair yield out of plane is consistent with a path-length-dependent energy loss. No $Ψ_3$ dependence can be resolved within experimental uncertainties.

Sc3+ and Y3+ have the open-shell d0 electronic configuration, while In3+ has the closed-shell d10. This indicates that a d0 B-type cation induces stronger overall magnetic exchange interactions in comparison to a d10. Comparison of Ba2BOsO6 (B = Sc, Y, In) to their Sr and Ca analogues shows that the structural distortions weaken the overall magnetic exchange interactions.

The electronic ground state of Ca3LiOsO6 was recently considered within an intermediate coupling regime that revealed J=3/2 spin-orbit entangled magnetic moments. Through inelastic neutron scattering and density functional theory we investigate the magnetic interactions and probe how the magnetism is influenced by the change in hierarchy of interactions as we move from Ca3LiOsO6 (5d3) to Ca3LiRuO6 (4d3). An alteration of the spin-gap and ordered local moment is observed, however the magnetic structure, Neel temperature and exchange interactions are unaltered. To explain this behavior it is necessary to include both spin-orbit coupling and hybridization, indicating the importance of an intermediate coupling approach when describing 5$d$ oxides.

The azimuthal angle correlations for particle pairs with this large rapidity gap in the Au-going direction exhibit a ridge-like structure that persists up to $p_T{\approx}6$ GeV/$c$ and which strongly depends on collision centrality, which is a similar characteristic to the hydrodynamical particle flow in A+A collisions. The ridge-like structure is absent in the $d$-going direction as well as in $p$$+$$p$ collisions, in the transverse-momentum range studied. The results indicate that the ridge-like structure is shifted in the Au-going direction toward more central collisions, similar to the charged-particle pseudorapidity distributions.

Nematic order often breaks the tetragonal symmetry of iron-based superconductors. It arises from regular structural transition or electronic instability in the normal phase. Here, we report the observation of a nematic superconducting state, by measuring the angular dependence of the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetoresistivity of Ba0.5K0.5Fe2As2 single crystals. We find large twofold oscillations in the vicinity of the superconducting transition, when the direction of applied magnetic field is rotated within the basal plane. To avoid the influences from sample geometry or current flow direction, the sample was designed as Corbino-shape for in-plane and mesa-shape for out-of-plane measurements. Theoretical analysis shows that the nematic superconductivity arises from the weak mixture of the quasi-degenerate s-wave and d-wave components of the superconducting condensate, most probably induced by a weak anisotropy of stresses inherent to single crystals.

The aim of this paper is to establish formulas for the projective dimension and the injective dimension for a certain class of $A$-modules which is expressed by using the derived functors $- \otimes^{\mathbb{L}}_ΛC$ and $\mathbb{R}\text{Hom}_Λ(C, -)$. Consequently, we obtain formulas for the global dimension of $A$, which gives a modern expression of the classical formula for the global dimension by Palmer-Roos and Löfwall that is written in complicated classical derived functors.
The main application of the formulas is to give a necessary and sufficient condition for $A$ to be an Iwanaga-Gorenstein algebra.
We also give a description of the kernel $\text{Ker} \varpi$ of the canonical functor $\varpi: \mathsf{D}^{\mathrm{b}}(\text{mod} Λ) \to \text{Sing}^{\mathbb{Z}} A$ in the case $\text{pd} C < \infty$.

NaOsO$_{\text{3}}$ undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) at 410 K, concomitant with the onset of antiferromagnetic order. The excitation spectra have been investigated through the MIT by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Os L$_{\text{3}}$ edge. Low resolution ($ΔE \sim$ 300 meV) measurements over a wide range of energies reveal that local electronic excitations do not change appreciably through the MIT. This is consistent with a picture in which structural distortions do not drive the MIT. In contrast, high resolution ($ΔE \sim $ 56 meV) measurements show that the well-defined, low energy magnons in the insulating state weaken and dampen upon approaching the metallic state. Concomitantly, a broad continuum of excitations develops which is well described by the magnetic fluctuations of a nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid. By revealing the continuous evolution of the magnetic quasiparticle spectrum as it changes its character from itinerant to localized, our results provide unprecedented insight into the nature of the MIT in \naoso. In particular, the presence of weak correlations in the paramagnetic phase implies a degree of departure from the ideal Slater limit.

The $e^+e^-$ pair yield from $b\bar{b}$ and $c\bar{c}$ is separated by exploiting a double differential fit done simultaneously in dielectron invariant mass and $p_T$. We used three different event generators, {\sc pythia}, {\sc mc@nlo}, and {\sc powheg}, to simulate the $e^+e^-$ spectra from $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$ production. The data can be well described by all three generators within the detector acceptance. However, when using the generators to extrapolate to $4π$, significant differences are observed for the total cross section. These difference are less pronounced for $b\bar{b}$ than for $c\bar{c}$. The same model dependence was observed in already published $d$+$A$ data. The $p$+$p$ data are also directly compared with $d$+$A$ data in mass and $p_T$, and within the statistical accuracy no nuclear modification is seen.

It crystallizes into a double perovskite structure [Fm-3m; a = 8.0428(1) Å], where the Ni2+ and Os6+ ions are perfectly ordered at the perovskite B-site. We show that the spin-orbit coupling of Os6+ plays an essential role in opening the charge gap. The magnetic state was investigated by density functional theory calculations and powder neutron diffraction. The latter revealed a collinear ferromagnetic order in a >21 kOe magnetic field at 5 K. The ferromagnetic gapped state is fundamentally different from that of known dilute magnetic semiconductors such as (Ga,Mn)As and (Cd,Mn)Te (Tmag < 180 K), the spin-gapless semiconductor Mn2CoAl (Tmag ~720 K), and the ferromagnetic insulators EuO (Tmag ~70 K) and Bi3Cr3O11 (Tmag ~220 K). It is also qualitatively different from known ferrimagnetic insulator/semiconductors, which are characterized by an antiparallel spin arrangement. Our finding of the ferromagnetic semiconductivity of Ba2NiOsO6 should increase interest in the platinum group oxides, because this new class of materials should be useful in the development of spintronic, quantum magnetic, and related devices.

Entanglement of spin and orbital degrees of freedom drives the formation of novel quantum and topological physical states. Discovering new spin-orbit entangled ground states and emergent phases of matter requires both experimentally probing the relevant energy scales and applying suitable theoretical models. Here we report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the transition metal oxides Ca$_3$LiOsO$_6$ and Ba$_2$YOsO$_6$. We invoke an intermediate coupling approach that incorporates both spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron interactions on an even footing and reveal the ground state of $5d^3$ based compounds, which has remained elusive in previously applied models, is a novel spin-orbit entangled J=3/2 electronic ground state. This work reveals the hidden diversity of spin-orbit controlled ground states in 5d systems and introduces a new arena in the search for spin-orbit controlled phases of matter.

Dimensionality plays an essential role in determining the anomalous non-Fermi liquid properties in heavy fermion systems. So far most heavy fermion compounds are quasi-two-dimensional or three-dimensional. Here we report the synthesis and systematic investigations of the single crystals of the quasi-one-dimensional Kondo lattice CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$. Resistivity measurements at ambient pressure reveal the onset of coherence at $T^*\approx 20\,$K and non-Fermi liquid behavior with linear temperature dependence over a decade in temperature from 2 K to 0.1 K. The specific heat increases logarithmically with lowering temperature between 10 K and 2 K and reaches 800 mJ/mol K$^2$ at 1 K, suggesting that CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$ is a heavy fermion compound in the close vicinity of a quantum critical point. Resistivity measurements under pressure further confirm the non-Fermi liquid behavior in a large temperature-pressure range. The magnetic susceptibility is found to follow the typical behavior for a one-dimensional (1D) spin chain from 300 K down to $T^*$, and first-principles calculations predict flat Fermi surfaces for the itinerant $f$-electron bands. These suggest that CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$ is a rare example of the quasi-1D Kondo lattice, but its non-Fermi liquid behaviors resemble those of the quasi-two-dimensional YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ family. The study of the quasi-one-dimensional CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$ family may therefore help us to understand the role of dimensionality on heavy fermion physics and quantum criticality.

Dome-shape superconductivity phase diagram can commonly be observed in cuprate and iron-based systems via tuning parameters such as charge carrier do**, pressure, bond angle, and etc. We report do** electrons from transition-metal elements (TM = Co, Ni) substitution can induce high-Tc superconductivity around 35 K in Ca0.94La0.06Fe2As2, which emerges abruptly before the total suppression of the innate spin-density-wave/anti-ferromagnetism (SDW/AFM) state. Unexpectedly, the onset critical temperature for the high-Tc superconductivity stays constant for a wide range of TM do**. Possible extrinsic factors like phase separation, chemical inhomogeneity, and charge carrier cancelation effect are all excluded. This anomalous charge carrier density independent SC is very similar to the interface superconductivity in La2-xSrxCuO4-La2CuO4 bilayer system. The further verified two-dimensional (2D) nature of superconductivity by the Tinkham's angular-dependent critical field model as well as by the angle-resolved magneto-resistance measurements jointly supports the idea of interfacial effect induced high-Tc superconductivity.

We review the progress of nonmagnetic impurity do** study on the Fe-based superconductors. On the theoretical side, two highly potential candidates for the pairing symmetry order parameter, i.e. the multi-gap s++ and s+- wave models, have been proposed but continuously debated. The debate arises because of the complex gap structure, exceptive magnetic and metallic behaviors of Fe-based superconductors which may make the influences of nonmagnetic defects varied in chemical potential, impurity disorder, inter- and intra-band scattering strength, and electron localization, and hence difficulty in directly obtaining the most important information for understanding the symmetry order parameter. Experimentally, the nonmagnetic impurity substitution study has been widely carried out, which has provided very useful insights. We review herein the various nonmagnetic impurity do** experiments, including the controlled defects within the superconducting Fe2X2 planes through samples quality improvement, a single impurity effects on the electronic state and local moment, the magnetic response of the Fe2X2 planes both on macroscopic scale as antiferromagnetic state and local scale of moment, as well as the significant effect in modifying the transport properties. The experiments enable us to qualitatively analyze the nonmagnetic impurities effects on the superconducting state for many Fe-based superconductors. We also propose herein some strategies for the nonmagnetic impurity do** study. As an important model for explaining the nonmagnetic impurities do** effects, the pair-breaking model is compared with various theoretical approaches via analyzing the pair-breaking rates of various Fe-superconductors.

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured 2nd and 3rd order Fourier coefficients of the azimuthal distributions of direct photons emitted at midrapidity in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV for various collision centralities. Combining two different analysis techniques, results were obtained in the transverse momentum range of $0.4<p_{T}<4.0$ GeV/$c$. At low $p_T$ the second-order coefficients, $v_2$, are similar to the ones observed in hadrons. Third order coefficients, $v_3$, are nonzero and almost independent of centrality. These new results on $v_2$ and $v_3$, combined with previously published results on yields, are compared to model calculations that provide yields and asymmetries in the same framework. Those models are challenged to explain simultaneously the observed large yield and large azimuthal anisotropies.

Measurements of the fractional momentum loss ($S_{\rm loss}\equivδp_T/p_T$) of high-transverse-momentum-identified hadrons in heavy ion collisions are presented. Using $π^0$ in Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ and 200 GeV measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and and charged hadrons in Pb$+$Pb collisions measured by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, we studied the scaling properties of $S_{\rm loss}$ as a function of a number of variables: the number of participants, $N_{\rm part}$, the number of quark participants, $N_{\rm qp}$, the charged-particle density, $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$, and the Bjorken energy density times the equilibration time, $\varepsilon_{\rm Bj}τ_{0}$. We find that the $p_T$ where $S_{\rm loss}$ has its maximum, varies both with centrality and collision energy. Above the maximum, $S_{\rm loss}$ tends to follow a power-law function with all four scaling variables. The data at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV and 2.76 TeV, for sufficiently high particle densities, have a common scaling of $S_{\rm loss}$ with $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ and $\varepsilon_{\rm Bj}τ_{0}$, lending insight on the physics of parton energy loss.

Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, $N_{\rm part}$, and the number of constituent quark participants, $N_{q{\rm p}}$. For all $A$$+$$A$ collisions down to $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7$ GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with $N_{q{\rm p}}$ than scaling with $N_{\rm part}$. Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density, $\varepsilon_{\rm BJ}$, and the ratio of $dE_T/dη$ to $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$, the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all systems.

Jet production rates are measured in $p$$+$$p$ and $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV recorded in 2008 with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Jets are reconstructed using the $R=0.3$ anti-$k_{t}$ algorithm from energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and charged tracks in multi-wire proportional chambers, and the jet transverse momentum ($p_T$) spectra are corrected for the detector response. Spectra are reported for jets with $12<p_T<50$ GeV/$c$, within a pseudorapidity acceptance of $\left|η\right|<0.3$. The nuclear-modification factor ($R_{d{\rm Au}}$) values for 0\%--100\% $d$$+$Au events are found to be consistent with unity, constraining the role of initial state effects on jet production. However, the centrality-selected $R_{d{\rm Au}}$ values and central-to-peripheral ratios ($R_{\rm CP}$) show large, $p_T$-dependent deviations from unity, which challenge the conventional models that relate hard-process rates and soft-particle production in collisions involving nuclei.

Metals cannot exhibit ferroelectricity because static internal electric fields are screened by conduction electrons, but in 1965, Anderson and Blount predicted the possibility of a ferroelectric metal, in which a ferroelectric-like structural transition occurs in the metallic state. Up to now, no clear example of such a material has been identified. Here we report on a centrosymmetric (R-3c) to non-centrosymmetric (R3c) transition in metallic LiOsO3 that is structurally equivalent to the ferroelectric transition of LiNbO3. The transition involves a continuous shift in the mean position of Li+ ions on cooling below 140K. Its discovery realizes the scenario described by Anderson and Blount, and establishes a new class of materials whose properties may differ from those of normal metals.

LiOsO$_3$ has been recently identified as the first unambiguous "ferroelectric metal", experimentally realizing a prediction from 1965 by Anderson and Blount. In this work, we investigate the metallic state in LiOsO$_3$ by means of infrared spectroscopy supplemented by Density Functional Theory and Dynamical Mean Field Theory calculations. Our measurements and theoretical calculations clearly show that LiOsO$_3$ is a very bad metal with a small quasiparticle weight, close to a Mott-Hubbard localization transition. The agreement between experiments and theory allows us to ascribe all the relevant features in the optical conductivity to strong electron-electron correlations within the $t_{2g}$ manifold of the osmium atoms.
