We present Ir $4f$ core-level hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) experiments conducted across antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering transition in Ruddlesden-Popper iridates Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. The Ir $4f$ spectra exhibit distinct changes between the AFM and paramagnetic (PM) phases, with the spectral difference $I_\text{PM}-I_\text{AFM}$ showing a contrasting behavior in the two compounds. By employing computational simulations using the local-density approximation combined with the dynamical mean-field theory method, we elucidate that $I_\text{PM}-I_\text{AFM}$ primary reflects the Slater or Mott-Hubbard character of the AFM insulating state rather than material specific details. This sensitivity to fine low-energy electronic structure arises from the dependence of charge-transfer responses to the sudden creation of a localized core hole on both metal-insulator transitions and long-range AFM ordering. Our result broadens the applications of core-level HAXPES as a tool for characterization of electronic structure.

Hoshi, Kanai and Yamasaki [HKY22], [HKY23] determined $H^1(k,{\rm Pic}\, \overline{X})$ for norm one tori $T=R^{(1)}_{K/k}(\mathbb{G}_m)$ and gave a necessary and sufficient condition for the Hasse norm principle for extensions $K/k$ of number fields with $[K:k]\leq 15$. In this paper, we treat the case where $[K:k]=16$. Among $1954$ transitive subgroups $G=16Tm\leq S_{16}$ $(1\leq m\leq 1954)$ up to conjugacy, we determine $1101$ (resp. $774$, $31$, $37$, $1$, $1$, $9$) cases with $H^1(k,{\rm Pic}\, \overline{X})=0$ (resp. $Z/2Z$, $(Z/2Z)^{\oplus 2}$, $(Z/2Z)^{\oplus 3}$, $(Z/2Z)^{\oplus 4}$, $(Z/2Z)^{\oplus 6}$, $Z/4Z$) where $G$ is the Galois group of the Galois closure $L/k$ of $K/k$. We see that $H^1(k,{\rm Pic}\, \overline{X})=0$ implies that the Hasse norm principle holds for $K/k$. In particular, among $22$ primitive $G=16Tm$ cases, i.e. $H\leq G=16Tm$ is maximal with $[G:H]=16$, we determine exactly $6$ cases $(m=178, 708, 1080, 1329, 1654, 1753)$ with $H^1(k,{\rm Pic}\, \overline{X})\neq 0$ $($$(Z/2Z)^{\oplus 2}$, $Z/2Z$, $(Z/2Z)^{\oplus 2}$, $Z/2Z$, $Z/2Z$, $Z/2Z$). Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the Hasse norm principle for $K/k$ with $[K:k]=16$ for $22$ primitive $G=16Tm$ cases. As a consequence of the $22$ primitive $G$ cases, we get the Tamagawa number $τ(T)=1$, $1/2$, $1/4$ of $T=R^{(1)}_{K/k}(\mathbb{G}_m)$ over a number field $k$ via Ono's formula $τ(T)=1/|Sha(T)|$ where $Sha(T)$ is the Shafarevich-Tate group of $T$.

We report the ground-state symmetry of the Ce $4f$ states in the heavy fermion superconductor CeNi$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$, yielding anisotropic $cf$-hybridization between the Ce $4f$ states and conducting electrons. By analyzing linear dichroism in soft x-ray absorption and core-level hard x-ray photoemission spectra, the $4f$ symmetry is determined as $Σ$-type $Γ_{7}$, promoting predominant hybridization with the conducting electrons originating from the Ge site. The band structures probed by the soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission indicates that the Ge $4p$ components contribute to the band renormalization through the anisotropic hybridization effects, suggesting that the control of the electronic structures of Ge orbital gives an impact to achieve the exotic phenomena in CeNi$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$.

In this study, we investigate the bulk electronic structure of Pb-substituted LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ single crystals, using two types of hard-x-ray spectroscopy. High-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed a spectral change at low temperatures. Using density functional theory (DFT) simulations, we find that the temperature-induced change originates from a structural phase transition, similar to the pressure-induced transition in LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$. This finding suggests that the mechanism of bulk superconductivity induced by Pb substitution is the same as that under high pressure. Furthermore, a novel low-valence state with a mixture of divalent and trivalent Bi ions is discovered using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with the aid of DFT calculations.

We give a stably birational classification for algebraic tori of dimensions $3$ and $4$ over a field $k$. First, we define the weak stably equivalence of algebraic tori and show that there exist $13$ (resp. $128$) weak stably equivalent classes of algebraic tori $T$ of dimension $3$ (resp. $4$) which are not stably rational by computing some cohomological stably birational invariants, e.g. the Brauer-Grothendieck group of $X$ where $X$ is a smooth compactification of $T$, provided by Kunyavskii, Skorobogatov and Tsfasman. We make a procedure to compute such stably birational invariants effectively and the computations are done by using the computer algebra system GAP. Second, we define the $p$-part of the flabby class $[\hat{T}]^{fl}$ as a $Z_p[Sy_p(G)]$-lattice and prove that they are faithful and indecomposable $Z_p[Sy_p(G)]$-lattices unless it vanishes for $p=2$ (resp. $p=2,3$) in dimension $3$ (resp. $4$). The $Z_p$-ranks of them are also given. Third, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for which two not stably rational algebraic tori $T$ and $T^\prime$ of dimensions $3$ (resp. $4$) are stably birationally equivalent in terms of the splitting fields and the weak stably equivalent classes of $T$ and $T^\prime$. In particular, the splitting fields of them should coincide if $\hat{T}$ and $\hat{T}^\prime$ are indecomposable. Forth, for each $7$ cases of not stably but retract rational algebraic tori of dimension $4$, we find an algebraic torus $T^\prime$ of dimension $4$ which satisfies that $T\times_k T^\prime$ is stably rational. Finally, we give a criteria to determine whether two algebraic tori $T$ and $T^\prime$ of general dimensions are stably birationally equivalent when $T$ (resp. $T^\prime$) is stably birationally equivalent to some algebraic torus $T^{\prime\prime}$ of dimension up to $4$.

On the other hand, in 1963, Ono proved that for the norm one torus $T=R^{(1)}_{K/k}(G_m)$ of $K/k$, $Sha(T)=0$ if and only if the Hasse norm principle holds for $K/k$. When $k=\bQ$ and $G$ contains a normal subgroup $N$ with $G/H\simeq C_8$ (the cyclic group of order $8$), Jack Sonn proves that $\bQ(G)$ is not stably rational over $\bQ$, which is a non-abelian extension of a theorem of Endo-Miyata, Voskresenskii, Lenstra and Saltman for the abelian Noether's problem $\bQ(C_8)$. Using the method of cohomological invariants, we are able to generalize Sonn's theorem as follows. Theorem. Let $G$ be a finite group and $N$ $\lhd$ $G$ such that $G/N\simeq C_{2^n}$ with $n\geq 3$. Let $k$ be a field and $G$ be a finite group acting on the rational function field $k(x_g : g\in G)$ by $k$-automorphisms defined as $h(x_g)=x_{hg}$ for any $g,h\in G$. We denote the fixed field $k(x_g : g\in G)^G$ by $k(G)$. Noether's problem asks whether $k(G)$ is rational (= purely transcendental) over $k$. It is well-known that if $C(G)$ is stably rational over $C$, then all the unramified cohomology groups $H_[nr}^i(C(G),Q/Z)=0$ for $i \ge 2$. Hoshi, Kang and Kunyavskii [HKK] showed that, for a $p$-group of order $p^5$ ($p$: an odd prime number), $H_[nr}^2(C(G),Q/Z)\neq 0$ if and only if $G$ belongs to the isoclinism family $Φ_{10}$. When $p$ is an odd prime number, Peyre [Pe3] and Hoshi, Kang and Yamasaki [HKY1] exhibit some $p$-groups $G$ which are of the form of a central extension of certain elementary abelian $p$-group by another one with $H_[nr}^2(C(G),Q/Z)=0$ and $H_[nr}^3(C(G),Q/Z)\neq 0$. However, it is difficult to tell whether $H_[nr}^3(C(G),Q/Z)$ is non-trivial if $G$ is an arbitrary finite group. In this paper, we are able to determine $H_[nr}^3(C(G),Q/Z)$ where $G$ is any group of order $p^5$ with $p=3, 5, 7$. Theorem 1. Let $G$ be a group of order $3^5$. Then $H_[nr}^3(C(G),Q/Z)\neq 0$ if and only if $G$ belongs to $Φ_7$. Theorem 2. If $G$ is a group of order $3^5$, then the fixed field $C(G)$ is rational if and only if $G$ does not belong to $Φ_{7}$ and $Φ_{10}$. Theorem 3. Let $G$ be a group of order $5^5$ or $7^5$. Then $H_[nr}^3(C(G),Q/Z)\neq 0$ if and only if $G$ belongs to $Φ_6$, $Φ_7$ or $Φ_{10}$. Theorem 4. If $G$ is the alternating group $A_n$, the Mathieu group $M_{11}$, $M_{12}$, the Janko group $J_1$ or the group $PSL_2(F_q)$, $SL_2(F_q)$, $PGL_2(F_q)$ (where $q$ is a prime power), then $H_[nr}^d(C(G),Q/Z)=0$ for any $d\ge 2$. Besides the degree three unramified cohomology groups, we compute also the stable cohomology groups.

We present a detailed study of the Ti 3$d$ carriers at the interface of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures by high-resolution resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering (RIXS), with special focus on the roles of overlayer thickness and oxygen vacancies. Our measurements show the existence of interfacial Ti 3$d$ electrons already below the critical thickness for conductivity and an increase of the total interface charge up to a LaAlO$_3$ overlayer thickness of 6 unit cells before it levels out. By comparing stoichiometric and oxygen deficient samples we observe strong Ti 3$d$ charge carrier do** by oxygen vacancies. The RIXS data combined with photoelectron spectroscopy and transport measurements indicate the simultaneous presence of localized and itinerant charge carriers. However, it is demonstrated that the relative amount of localized and itinerant Ti $3d$ electrons in the ground state cannot be deduced from the relative intensities of the Raman and fluorescence peaks in excitation energy dependent RIXS measurements, in contrast to previous interpretations. Rather, we attribute the observation of either the Raman or the fluorescence signal to the spatial extension of the intermediate state reached in the RIXS excitation process.

We report experimentally observed linear dichroism in angle-resolved core-level photoemission spectra of PrIr2Zn20 and PrB6 in cubic symmetry. The different anisotropic 4f charge distributions between the compounds due to the crystalline-electric-field splitting are responsible for the difference in the linear dichroism, which has been verified by spectral simulations with the full multiplet theory for a single-site Pr3+ ion in cubic symmetry. The observed linear dichroism and polarization-dependent spectra in two different photoelectron directions for PrIr2Zn20 are reproduced by theoretical analysis for the Gamma_3 ground state, whereas those of the Pr 3d and 4d core levels indicate the Gamma_5 ground state for PrB6.

In this study, we systematically investigate 3D momentum($\hbar k$)-resolved electronic structures of Ruddlesden-Popper-type iridium oxides Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_n$O$_{3n+1}$ using soft-x-ray (SX) angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Our results provide direct evidence of an insulator-to-metal transition that occurs upon increasing the dimensionality of the IrO$_2$-plane structure. This transition occurs when the spin-orbit-coupled $j_{\rm eff}$=1/2 band changes its behavior in the dispersion relation and moves across the Fermi energy. In addition, an emerging band along the $Γ$(0,0,0)-R($π$,$π$,$π$) direction is found to play a crucial role in the metallic characteristics of SrIrO$_3$. By scanning the photon energy over 350 eV, we reveal the 3D Fermi surface in SrIrO$_3$ and $k_z$-dependent oscillations of photoelectron intensity in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. In contrast to previously reported results obtained using low-energy photons, folded bands derived from lattice distortions and/or magnetic ordering make significantly weak (but finite) contributions to the $k$-resolved photoemission spectrum. At the first glance, this leads to the ambiguous result that the observed $k$-space topology is consistent with the unfolded Brillouin zone (BZ) picture derived from a non-realistic simple square or cubic Ir lattice. Through careful analysis, we determine that a superposition of the folded and unfolded band structures has been observed in the ARPES spectra obtained using photons in both ultraviolet and SX regions. To corroborate the physics deduced using low-energy ARPES studies, we propose to utilize SX-ARPES as a powerful complementary technique, as this method surveys more than one whole BZ and provides a panoramic view of electronic structures.

The finite subgroups of $GL_4(\bm{Z})$ are classified up to conjugation in \cite{BBNWZ}; in particular, there exist $710$ non-conjugate finite groups in $GL_4(\bm{Z})$. Each finite group $G$ of $GL_4(\bm{Z})$ acts naturally on $\bm{Z}^{\oplus 4}$; thus we get a faithful $G$-lattice $M$ with ${\rm rank}_\bm{Z} M=4$. In this way, there are exactly $710$ such lattices. Given a $G$-lattice $M$ with ${\rm rank}_\bm{Z} M=4$, the group $G$ acts on the rational function field $\bm{C}(M):=\bm{C}(x_1,x_2,x_3,x_4)$ by multiplicative actions, i.e. purely monomial automorphisms over $\bm{C}$. We are concerned with the rationality problem of the fixed field $\bm{C}(M)^G$. A tool of our investigation is the unramified Brauer group of the field $\bm{C}(M)^G$ over $\bm{C}$. A formula of the unramified Brauer group ${\rm Br}_u(\bm{C}(M)^G)$ for the multiplicative invariant field was found by Saltman in 1990. However, to calculate ${\rm Br}_u(\bm{C}(M)^G)$ for a specific multiplicatively invariant field requires additional efforts, even when the lattice $M$ is of rank equal to $4$. Theorem 1. Among the $710$ finite groups $G$, let $M$ be the associated faithful $G$-lattice with ${\rm rank}_\bm{Z} M=4$, there exist precisely $5$ lattices $M$ with ${\rm Br}_u(\bm{C}(M)^G)\neq 0$. In these situations, $B_0(G)=0$ and thus ${\rm Br}_u(\bm{C}(M)^G)\subset H^2(G,M)$. The {\rm GAP IDs} of the five groups $G$ are {\rm (4,12,4,12), (4,32,1,2), (4,32,3,2), (4,33,3,1), (4,33,6,1)} in {\rm \cite{BBNWZ}} and in {\rm \cite{GAP}}. Theorem 2. There exist $6079$ finite subgroups $G$ in $GL_5(\bm{Z})$. Let $M$ be the lattice with rank $5$ associated to each group $G$. Among these lattices precisely $46$ of them satisfy the condition ${\rm Br}_u(\bm{C}(M)^G)\neq 0$. A similar result for lattices of rank $6$ is found also.

We have developed a polarized hard X-ray photoemission (HAXPES) system to study the ground-state symmetry of strongly correlated materials. The linear polarization of the incoming X-ray beam is switched by the transmission-type phase retarder composed of two diamond (100) crystals. The best degree of the linear polarization $P_L$ is $-0.96$, containing the vertical polarization component of 98%. A newly developed low temperature two-axis manipulator enables easy polar and azimuthal rotations to select the detection direction of photoelectrons. The lowest temperature achieved is 9 K, offering us a chance to access the ground state even for the strongly correlated electron systems in cubic symmetry. The co-axial sample monitoring system with the long-working-distance microscope enables us to keep measuring the same region on the sample surface before and after rotation procedures. Combining this sample monitoring system with a micro-focused X-ray beam by means of an ellipsoidal Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror (25 $μ$m $\times$ 25 $μ$m (FWHM)), we have demonstrated the polarized valence-band HAXPES on NiO for voltage application as resistive random access memories to reveal the origin of the metallic spectral weight near the Fermi level.

HAXPES spectra of Sr2IrO4 and Ba2IrO4 are well reproduced by the quasi-particle densities of states calculated by the local density approximation with dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). It is demonstrated that the insulating nature of the iridates is triggered by antiferromagnetic correlation (Slater type) combined with electron correlation (Mott type). The extremely-low-energy bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy reveals "bad metallic" states in the paramagnetic phase of the iridates, suggesting strongly renormalized metallic states above the Neel temperature as predicted by the LDA+DMFT.

The interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 hosts a two-dimensional electron system of itinerant carriers, although both oxides are band insulators. Interface ferromagnetism coexisting with superconductivity has been found and attributed to local moments. Experimentally, it has been established that Ti 3d electrons are confined to the interface. Using soft x-ray angle-resolved resonant photoelectron spectroscopy we have directly mapped the interface states in k-space. Our data demonstrate a charge dichotomy. A mobile fraction contributes to Fermi surface sheets, whereas a localized portion at higher binding energies is tentatively attributed to electrons trapped by O-vacancies in the SrTiO3. While photovoltage effects in the polar LaAlO3 layers cannot be excluded, the apparent absence of surface-related Fermi surface sheets could also be fully reconciled in a recently proposed electronic reconstruction picture where the built-in potential in the LaAlO3 is compensated by surface O-vacancies serving also as charge reservoir.

We give the complete stably rational classification of algebraic tori of dimensions $4$ and $5$ over a field $k$. In particular, the stably rational classification of norm one tori whose Chevalley modules are of rank $4$ and $5$ is given. We show that there exist exactly $487$ (resp. $7$, resp. $216$) stably rational (resp. not stably but retract rational, resp. not retract rational) algebraic tori of dimension $4$, and there exist exactly $3051$ (resp. $25$, resp. $3003$) stably rational (resp. not stably but retract rational, resp. not retract rational) algebraic tori of dimension $5$. We make a procedure to compute a flabby resolution of a $G$-lattice effectively by using the computer algebra system GAP. Some algorithms may determine whether the flabby class of a $G$-lattice is invertible (resp. zero) or not. Using the algorithms, we determine all the flabby and coflabby $G$-lattices of rank up to $6$ and verify that they are stably permutation. We also show that the Krull-Schmidt theorem for $G$-lattices holds when the rank $\leq 4$, and fails when the rank is $5$. Indeed, there exist exactly $11$ (resp. $131$) $G$-lattices of rank $5$ (resp. $6$) which are decomposable into two different ranks. Moreover, when the rank is $6$, there exist exactly $18$ $G$-lattices which are decomposable into the same ranks but the direct summands are not isomorphic. We confirm that $H^1(G,F)=0$ for any Bravais group $G$ of dimension $n\leq 6$ where $F$ is the flabby class of the corresponding $G$-lattice of rank $n$. In particular, $H^1(G,F)=0$ for any maximal finite subgroup $G\leq {\rm GL}(n,\mathbb{Z})$ where $n\leq 6$. As an application of the methods developed, some examples of not retract (stably) rational fields over $k$ are given.

We have investigated the electronic structures of recently discovered superconductor FeSe by soft-x-ray and hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with high bulk sensitivity. The large Fe 3d spectral weight is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level (EF), which is demonstrated to be a coherent quasi-particle peak. Compared with the results of the band structure calculation with local-density approximation, Fe 3d band narrowing and the energy shift of the band toward EF are found, suggesting an importance of the electron correlation effect in FeSe. The self energy correction provides the larger mass enhancement value (Z^-1=3.6) than in Fe-As superconductors and enables us to separate a incoherent part from the spectrum. These features are quite consistent with the results of recent dynamical mean-field calculations, in which the incoherent part is attributed to the lower Hubbard band.

Let $K$ be a field of characteristic not two and $K(x,y,z)$ the rational function field over $K$ with three variables $x,y,z$. Let $G$ be a finite group of acting on $K(x,y,z)$ by monomial $K$-automorphisms. We consider the rationality problem of the fixed field $K(x,y,z)^G$ under the action of $G$, namely whether $K(x,y,z)^G$ is rational (that is, purely transcendental) over $K$ or not. We may assume that $G$ is a subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathbb{Z}) and the problem is determined up to conjugacy in $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathbb{Z})$. There are 73 conjugacy classes of $G$ in $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathbb{Z})$. By results of Endo-Miyata, Voskresenski\uı, Lenstra, Saltman, Hajja, Kang and Yamasaki, 8 conjugacy classes of 2-groups in $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathbb{Z})$ have negative answers to the problem under certain monomial actions over some base field $K$, and the necessary and sufficient condition for the rationality of $K(x,y,z)^G$ over $K$ is given. In this paper, we show that the fixed field $K(x,y,z)^G$ under monomial action of $G$ is rational over $K$ except for possibly negative 8 cases of 2-groups and unknown one case of the alternating group of degree four. Moreover we give explicit transcendental bases of the fixed fields over $K$. For unknown case, we obtain an affirmative solution to the problem under some conditions. In particular, we show that if $K$ is quadratically closed field then $K(x,y,z)^G$ is rational over $K$. We also give an application of the result to 4-dimensional linear Noether's problem.

We have investigated the electronic structures of newly discovered superconductor FeSe1-x by bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The large Fe 3d spectral weight is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level (EF) and it decreases steeply toward EF . Compared with results of band structure calculations, narrowing the Fe 3d band width and the energy shift of the band toward EF are found, suggesting a mass enhancement due to the weak electron correlation effect. Meanwhile, Fe 2p core-level PES reveals a strong itinerant character of Fe 3d electrons. These features are very similar to those in other Fe-based high-Tc superconductors.

Ab initio calculation of the electronic properties of materials is a major challenge for solid state theory. Whereas the experience of forty years has proven density functional theory (DFT) in a suitable, e.g. local approximation (LDA) to give a satisfactory description in case electronic correlations are weak, materials with strongly correlated, say d- or f-electrons remain a challenge. Such materials often exhibit colossal responses to small changes of external parameters such as pressure, temperature, and magnetic field, and are therefore most interesting for technical applications.
Encouraged by the success of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) in dealing with model Hamiltonians for strongly correlated electron systems, physicists from the bandstructure and many-body communities have joined forces and have developed a combined LDA+DMFT method for treating materials with strongly correlated electrons ab initio. As a function of increasing Coulomb correlations, this new approach yields a weakly correlated metal, a strongly correlated metal, or a Mott insulator.
In this paper, we introduce the LDA+DMFT by means of an example, LaMnO_3 . Results for this material, including the colossal magnetoresistance of doped manganites are presented. We also discuss advantages and disadvantages of the LDA+DMFT approach.

When pressure is applied in the $c$-direction, a $d^1$ analog of $d^9$ cuprates is realized, making Sr$_2$(Ba$_2$)VO$_4$ a possible candidate for a $d^1$ superconductor. Finite-temperature Dynamical Mean Field Theory results show the existence of non-quasiparticle states, which were recently observed as almost currentless minority spin states near the Fermi energy in resonant scattering experients. At zero temperatures, Variational Cluster Approach calculations support the half-metallic nature of CrO$_2$ as seen in superconducting point contact spectroscopy. The combination of these two techniques allowed us to qualitatively describe the spin-polarization in CrO$_2$.

In the PM phase, we observe a prominent quasiparticle peak in general agreement with theory, which combines dynamical mean-field theory with the local density approximation (LDA+DMFT). The quasiparticle peak shows a significantly larger peak width and weight than in the theory. For both the PI and AFI phases, the vanadium 3d parts of the valence spectra are not simple one peak structures. For the PI phase, there is not yet a good theoretical understanding of these structures. The size of the electron removal gap increases, and spectral weight accumulates in the energy range closer to the chemical potential, when the PI to AFI transition occurs. Spectra taken in the same phases with different compositions show interesting monotonic changes as the dopant concentration increases, regardless of the dopant species. With increased Cr-do**, the AFI phase gap decreases and the PI phase gap increases.

A versatile method for combining density functional theory (DFT) in the local density approximation (LDA) with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) is presented. Starting from a general basis-independent formulation, we use Wannier functions as an interface between the two theories. These functions are used for the physical purpose of identifying the correlated orbitals in a specific material, and also for the more technical purpose of interfacing DMFT with different kinds of band-structure methods (with three different techniques being used in the present work). We explore and compare two distinct Wannier schemes, namely the maximally-localized-Wannier-function (MLWF) and the $N$-th order muffin-tin-orbital (NMTO) methods. Two correlated materials with different degrees of structural and electronic complexity, SrVO3 and BaVS3, are investigated as case studies. SrVO3 belongs to the canonical class of correlated transition-metal oxides, and is chosen here as a test case in view of its simple structure and physical properties. In contrast, the sulfide BaVS3 is known for its rich and complex physics, associated with strong correlation effects and low-dimensional characteristics. New insights into the physics associated with the metal-insulator transition of this compound are provided, particularly regarding correlation-induced modifications of its Fermi surface. Additionally, the necessary formalism for implementing self-consistency over the electronic charge density in a Wannier basis is discussed.

Already for intermediate values of the interaction $U$ the overall bandwidth is larger than in Hartree-Fock, and the gap is considerably smaller. Such differences survive any renormalization of $U$. We find that the so-called Zhang--Rice state on a single CuO$_4$ plaquette is nearly degenerate with a state whose leading configuration is of the form Cu $d^9$-- O $p^5$-- Cu $d^9$. A strong coupling between the electronic and nuclear motion gives rise to large inter-site charge transfer effects for half-breathing displacements of the oxygen ions. Under the assumption of charge segregation into alternating hole-free and hole-rich stripes of Goodenough \cite{jbg_02,jbg_03}, our results seem to support the vibronic mechanism and the traveling charge-density wave model from Refs.\cite{jbg_02,jbg_03} for the superconductivity in copper oxides.

In the series of 3d1 t2g perovskites, SrVO3--CaVO3--LaTiO3--YTiO3 the transition-metal d electron becomes increasingly localized and undergoes a Mott transition between CaVO3 and LaTiO3. By defining a low-energy Hubbard Hamiltonian in the basis of Wannier functions for the t2g LDA band and solving it in the single-site DMFT approximation, it was recently shown[1] that simultaneously with the Mott transition there occurs a strong suppression of orbital fluctuations due to splitting of the t2g levels. The present paper reviews and expands this work, in particular in the direction of exposing the underlying chemical mechanisms by means of ab initio LDA Wannier functions generated with the NMTO method. The Wannier functions for the t2g band exhibit covalency between the transition-metal t2g, the large cation-d, and the oxygen-p states; this covalency, which increases along the series, turns out to be responsible not only for the splittings of the t2g levels, but also for non-cubic perturbations of the hop** integrals, both of which are decisive for the Mott transition. We find good agreement with the optical and photoemission spectra, with the crystal-field splittings and orbital polarizations recently measured for the titanates, and with the metallization volume for LaTiO3. The metallization volume for YTiO3 is predicted. Using super-exchange theory, we reproduce the observed magnetic orders in LaTiO3 and YTiO3, but the results are sensitive to detail, in particular for YTiO3 which, without the Jahn-Teller distortion, would be AFM C- or A-type, rather than FM. Finally, we show that it possible to unfold the orthorhombic t2g LDA bandstructure to a pseudocubic zone. In this zone, the lowest band is separated from the two others by a direct gap and has a width, W_I, which is significantly smaller than that, W, of the entire t2g band. The progressive GdFeO3-type distortion favours electron localization by decreasing W, by increasing the splitting of the t2g levels and by decreasing W_I. Our conclusions concerning the roles of GdFeO3-type and JT distortions agree with those of Mochizuki and Imada [2].
