Observation of the Electromagnetic Dalitz Transition $h_c \rightarrow e^+e^-η_c$

Abstract: Using $(27.12\pm 0.14)\times10^8$ $ψ(3686)$ decays and data samples of $e^+e^-$ collisions with $\sqrt{s}$ from 4.130 to 4.780~GeV collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of the electromagnetic Dalitz transition $h_c\to e^+e^-η_c$ with a statistical significance of $5.4σ$. A truly cylindrical inner tracker for ALICE

Abstract: After the successful installation and first operation of the upgraded Inner Tracking System (ITS2), which consists of about $10\,$m$^2$ of monolithic silicon pixel sensors, ALICE is pioneering the usage of bent, wafer-scale pixel sensors for the ITS3 for LHC Run 4. Sensors larger than typical reticle sizes can be produced using the technique of stitching. By cooling such sensors with a forced airflow, it becomes possible to construct truly cylindrical layers which consist practically only of the silicon sensors. The reduction of the material budget and the improved pointing resolution will allow new measurements, in particular of heavy-flavor decays and electromagnetic probes. Abstract: We present a method of embedding a Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) into a flexible printed circuit board (FPC) and its interconnection by means of through-hole copper plating. The resulting assembly, baptised "MAPS foil", is a flexible, light, protected, and fully integrated detector module. Measurement of the Absolute Branching Fraction of $D_s^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$ via $τ^+ \to e^+ ν_e \barν_τ$

Combining with $f_{D_s^+}$ from Lattice quantum chromodynamics calculations or the $|V_{cs}|$ from the CKMfitter group, we extract $|V_{cs}|=0.978\pm0.009\pm0.012$ and $f_{D_s^+}= (251.1\pm2.4\pm3.0)$ MeV, respectively. Combining our result with the world averages of $\mathcal{B}_{D_s^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ}$ and $\mathcal{B}_{D_s^+ \to μ^+ ν_μ}$, we obtain the ratio of the branching fractions $\mathcal{B}_{D_s^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ} / \mathcal{B}_{D_s^+ \to μ^+ ν_μ} = 9.72\pm0.37$, which is consistent with the standard model prediction of lepton flavor universality. △ Less

The results are found to be consistent with those obtained by BaBar. A resonant structure around $2.2~{\rm GeV}$ is observed, with a mass and width of $2273.7 \pm 5.7 \pm 19.3~{\rm MeV}/c^2$ and $86 \pm 44 \pm 51~{\rm MeV}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. A new method, exploiting the fact that the $Ξ^-\overlineΞ^+$ pair is entangled and sequentially decaying, and where the com… ▽ More Using a sample of $1.31\times10^9$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the electron-positron collider BEPCII, we analyse the full $J/ψ\to$ $Ξ^-\overlineΞ^+$, $Ξ^-\to Λπ^-$, $Λ\to pπ^-$, $\overlineΞ^+\to\overlineΛπ^+$, $\overlineΛ\to\overline{p}π^+$ decay chain. A new method, exploiting the fact that the $Ξ^-\overlineΞ^+$ pair is entangled and sequentially decaying, and where the complete decay chains are reconstructed, is applied for the first time. This enables precision measurements of the decay parameters for the $Ξ^-\toΛπ^-$ decay ($α_Ξ$, $φ_Ξ$) as well as the $\overlineΞ^+\to\overlineΛπ^+$ decay ($\overlineα_Ξ$, $\overlineφ_Ξ$). From the decay parameters, two independent CP tests were performed, quantified by the observables $A_{\rm CP}^Ξ$ and $Δφ_Ξ$. Our results, $A_{\rm CP}^Ξ$ = $(6.0\pm13.4\pm5.6)\times10^{-3}$ and $Δφ_Ξ= (-4.8\pm13.7\pm2.9)\times10^{-3}~{\rm rad}$, are consistent with CP symmetry. Furthermore, our method enables a separation of strong and weak $Ξ\toΛπ$ decay amplitudes. This results in the first direct measurement of the weak phase difference for any baryon decay. The result is found to be $(ξ_{P} - ξ_{S}) = (1.2\pm3.4\pm0.8)\times10^{-2}$ rad and is one of the most precise tests of CP symmetry for strange baryons. The strong phase difference is measured to be $(δ_P - δ_S) = (-4.0\pm3.3\pm1.7)\times10^{-2}$ rad. In addition, we provide an independent measurement of the recently debated $Λ$ decay parameter, $α_Λ = 0.757 \pm 0.011 \pm 0.008 $. The $Λ\overlineΛ$ asymmetry is measured to be $A_{\rm CP}^Λ = (-3.7\pm11.7\pm9.0)\times10^{-3}$. △ Less

By reconstructing one neutral charm meson in a signal decay, and the other in the same or a different final state, observables are measured that contain information on the coherence factors and average strong-phase differences of each of the signal modes. These parameters are critical inputs in the measurement of the angle $γ$ of the Unitarity Triangle in $B^- \to DK^-$ decays at the LHCb and Belle II experiments. The coherence factors are determined to be $R_{K3π}=0.52^{+0.12}_{-0.10}$ and $R_{Kππ^0}=0.78 \pm 0.04$, with values for the average strong-phase differences that are $δ_D^{K3π}=\left(167^{+31}_{-19}\right)^\circ$ and $δ_D^{Kππ^0}=\left(196^{+14}_{-15}\right)^\circ$, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. The analysis is re-performed in four bins of the phase-space of the $D \to K^-π^+π^+π^-$ to yield results that will allow for a more sensitive measurement of $γ$ with this mode, to which the BESIII inputs will contribute an uncertainty of around 6$^\circ$. △ Less

Abstract: Using a total of $5.25~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data with center-of-mass energies from 4.236 to 4.600 GeV, we report the first observation of the process $e^{+}e^{-}\to ηψ(2S)$ with a statistical significance of $5σ$. Measurement of the absolute branching fractions for purely leptonic $D_s^+$ decays

Abstract: We report new measurements of the branching fraction $\cal B(D_s^+\to \ell^+ν)$, where $\ell^+$ is either $μ^+$ or $τ^+(\toπ^+\barν_τ)$, based on $6.32$ fb$^{-1}$ of electron-positron annihilation data collected by the BESIII experiment at six center-of-mass energy points between $4.178$ and $4.226$ GeV. Simultaneously floating the $D_s^+\toμ^+ν_μ$ and $D_s^+\toτ^+ν_τ$ components yields $\cal B(D_s^+\to τ^+ν_τ) = (5.21\pm0.25\pm0.17)\times10^{-2}$, $\cal B(D_s^+\to μ^+ν_μ) = (5.35\pm0.13\pm0.16)\times10^{-3}$, and the ratio of decay widths $R=\frac{Γ(D_s^+\to τ^+ν_τ)}{Γ(D_s^+\to μ^+ν_μ)} = 9.73^{+0.61}_{-0.58}\pm 0.36$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. No evidence of ${\it CP}$ asymmetry is observed in the decay rates $D_s^\pm\toμ^\pmν_μ$ and $D_s^\pm\toτ^\pmν_τ$: $A_{\it CP}(μ^\pmν) = (-1.2\pm2.5\pm1.0)\%$ and $A_{\it CP}(τ^\pmν) = (+2.9\pm4.8\pm1.0)\%$. Constraining our measurement to the Standard Model expectation of lepton universality ($R=9.75$), we find the more precise results $\cal B(D_s^+\to τ^+ν_τ) = (5.22\pm0.10\pm 0.14)\times10^{-2}$ and $A_{\it CP}(τ^\pmν_τ) = (-0.1\pm1.9\pm1.0)\%$. Combining our results with inputs external to our analysis, we determine the $c\to \bar{s}$ quark mixing matrix element, $D_s^+$ decay constant, and ratio of the decay constants to be $|V_{cs}| = 0.973\pm0.009\pm0.014$, $f_{D^+_s} = 249.9\pm2.4\pm3.5~\text{MeV}$, and $f_{D^+_s}/f_{D^+} = 1.232\pm0.035$, respectively. △ Less

The branching-fraction ratio $\frac{\mathcal{B}(ψ_2(3823)\rightarrowγχ_{c2})}{\mathcal{B}(ψ_2(3823)\rightarrowγχ_{c1})}$ is determined. No significant $ψ_2(3823)$ signals are observed for any of the other decay channels. Upper limits of branching-fraction ratios for $ψ_2(3823)\rightarrowπ^+π^-J/ψ, π^0π^0J/ψ, ηJ/ψ, π^0J/ψ, γχ_{c0}$ relative to $ψ_2(3823)\rightarrowγχ_{c1}$ are reported. The process $e^+e^-\rightarrowπ^0π^0ψ_2(3823)$ is also searched for, and we find evidence for the process with a significance of $4.3σ$. These data samples are primarily used for the study of excited charmonium and charmoniumlike states. Abstract: Using a sample of $1.31\times10^{9} ~J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform a study of $J/ψ\toγηηη^{\prime}$ to search for the $X(2370)$ and $η_{c}$ in the $ηηη^{\prime}$ invariant mass distribution. Observation of di-structures in $e^+e^-\rightarrow{J}/ψ{\rm X}$ at center-of-mass energies around 3.773 GeV

Abstract: We report a measurement of the observed cross sections of the inclusive $J/ψ$ production in $e^+e^-\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}$ based on 3.21 fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated at energies from 3.645 to 3.891 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider. Instead it can be better described with three BW amplitudes of the decays $ψ(3686)\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}$, $R(3760)\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}$ and $R(3790)\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}$ with two distinct structures referred to as $R(3760)$ and $R(3790)$. Under this assumption, we extracted their masses, total widths, and the product of the leptonic width and decay branching fractions to be $M_{R(3760)}= {3761.7\pm 2.2 \pm 1.2}$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γ^{\rm tot}_{R(3760)}= {6.7\pm 11.1 \pm 1.1}$ MeV, $Γ^{ee}_{R(3760)}\mathcal B[R(3760)\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}]=(4.0\pm 4.3\pm 1.2)$ eV, $M_{R(3790)} = {3784.7\pm 5.7 \pm 1.6}$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γ^{\rm tot}_{R(3790)} = {31.6 \pm 11.9 \pm 3.2}$ MeV, $Γ^{ee}_{R(3790)}\mathcal B[R(3790)\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}]=(18.1\pm 10.3\pm 4.7)$ eV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and second systematic. △ Less

The search is performed using five large data sets recorded at center-of-mass energies of 4.23, 4.26, 4.36, 4.42, and 4.60 GeV. The $η_c$ meson is reconstructed in 16 exclusive decay modes. Due to the inclusion of new data, this result supersedes the last BESIII result on this branching fracti… ▽ More The rare decay $η' \to π^+ π^- e^+ e^-$ is studied using a sample of $1.3 \times 10^9$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII in 2009 and 2012. The branching fraction is measured with improved precision to be $\left( 2.42\pm0.05_{stat.}\pm0.08_{syst.} \right) \times 10^{-3}$. Due to the inclusion of new data, this result supersedes the last BESIII result on this branching fraction. In addition, the CP-violating asymmetry in the angle between the decay planes of the $π^+π^-$-pair and the $e^+e^-$-pair is investigated. A measurable value would indicate physics beyond the standard model; the result is $\mathcal{A}_{CP} = \left(2.9\pm3.7_{stat.}\pm1.1_{syst.} \right)\%$, which is consistent with the standard model expectation of no CP-violation. The precision is comparable to the asymmetry measurement in the $K^0_L\toπ^+π^-e^+e^-$ decay where the observed $(14\pm2)\%$ effect is driven by a standard model mechanism. △ Less

An excess over the known contributions of the conventional charmed mesons is observed near the $D_s^- D^{*0}$ and $D^{*-}_s D^0$ mass thresholds in the $K^{+}$ recoil-mass spectrum for events collected at $\sqrt{s}=4.681$ GeV. The structure matches a mass-dependent-width Breit-Wigner line shape, whose pole mass and width are determined as $(3982.5^{+1.8}_{-2.6}\pm2.1)$ MeV/$c^2$ and $(12.8^{+5.3}_{-4.4}\pm3.0)$ MeV, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The significance of the resonance hypothesis is estimated to be 5.3 $σ$ over the contributions only from the conventional charmed mesons. This is the first candidate of the charged hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness, decaying into $D_s^- D^{*0}$ and $D^{*-}_s D^0$. Abstract: Ten hadronic final states of the $h_c$ decays are investigated via the process $ψ(3686)\rightarrow π^0 h_c$, using a data sample of $(448.1 \pm 2.9) \times 10^6$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay channel $h_c\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ is observed for the first time with a significance of $6.0 σ$. The corresponding branching fraction is determined to be… ▽ More Ten hadronic final states of the $h_c$ decays are investigated via the process $ψ(3686)\rightarrow π^0 h_c$, using a data sample of $(448.1 \pm 2.9) \times 10^6$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay channel $h_c\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ is observed for the first time with a significance of $6.0 σ$. The corresponding branching fraction is determined to be $\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}) =(3.3 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.6)\times 10^{-3}$ (the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematical). Evidence for the decays $h_c\rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{0} η$ and $h_c\rightarrow K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{+}π^{-}$ is found with a significance of $3.6 σ$ and $3.8 σ$, respectively. The corresponding branching fractions (and upper limits) are obtained to be $\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{0} η) =(7.2 \pm 1.8 \pm 1.3)\times 10^{-3}$ $(< 1.8 \times 10^{-2})$ and $\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrow K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{+}π^{-}) =(2.8 \pm 0.9 \pm 0.5)\times 10^{-3}$ $(<4.7\times 10^{-3})$. Upper limits on the branching fractions for the final states $h_c \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$, $K^{+}K^{-}η$, $K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}η$, $2(K^{+}K^{-})π^{0}$, $K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}η$, $K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}$, and $p\bar{p}π^{0}π^{0}$ are determined at a confidence level of 90\%. △ Less

Study of BESIII Trigger Efficiencies with the 2018 $J/ψ$ Data

Abstract: Using a dedicated data sample taken in 2018 on the $J/ψ$ peak, we perform a detailed study of the trigger efficiencies of the BESIII detector. The efficiencies are determined from three representative physics processes, namely Bhabha-scattering, dimuon production and generic hadronic events with charged particles. Abstract: Using 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII, we measure the branching fractions of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $D \to ωππ$ to be $\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to ωπ^+π^-) = (1.33 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.12)\times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(D^+ \to ωπ^+π^0) =(3.87 \pm 0.83 \pm 0.25)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first uncerta… ▽ More Using 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII, we measure the branching fractions of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $D \to ωππ$ to be $\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to ωπ^+π^-) = (1.33 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.12)\times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(D^+ \to ωπ^+π^0) =(3.87 \pm 0.83 \pm 0.25)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. The statistical significances are $12.9σ$ and $7.7 σ$, respectively. The precision of $\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to ωπ^+π^-)$ is improved by a factor of 2.1 over the CLEO measurement, and $\mathcal{B}(D^+ \to ωπ^+π^0)$ is measured for the first time. No significant signal of $\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to ωπ^0π^0)$ is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction is $\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to ωπ^0π^0) < 1.10 \times 10^{-3}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level. The branching fractions of $D\to ηππ$ are also measured and consistent with existing results. △ Less

Using these, the charged particle multiplicities are compared with results from MARK I. Further, comparison of the distributions of the number of photons in data with those in Monte Carlo simulation indicates that G-parity conservation should be taken into consideration in the simulation. △ Less

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the absolute branching fraction of the inclusive decay $Λ_c^+ \to K_S^0X$. The analysis is performed using an $e^+e^-$ collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 567 pb$^{-1}$ taken at $\sqrt{s}$ = 4.6 GeV with the BESIII detector. The analysis is performed using an $e^+e^-$ collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 567 pb$^{-1}$ taken at $\sqrt{s}$ = 4.6 GeV with the BESIII detector. Using eleven Cabibbo-favored $\barΛ_c^-$ decay modes and the double-tag technique, this absolute branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+ \to K_S^0X)=(9.9\pm0.6\pm0.4)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The relative deviation between the branching fractions for the inclusive decay and the observed exclusive decays is $(18.7\pm8.3)\%$, which indicates that there may be some unobserved decay modes with a neutron or excited baryons in the final state. △ Less
