An amplitude analysis of the $B^{0}\to K^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ decay is presented using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $4.7$ fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data collected with the LHCb experiment. For the first time, the coefficients associated to short-distance physics effects, sensitive to processes beyond the Standard Model, are extracted directly from the data through a $q^2$-unbinned amplitude analysis, where $q^2$ is the $μ^+μ^-$ invariant mass squared. Long-distance contributions, which originate from non-factorisable QCD processes, are systematically investigated and the most accurate assessment to date of their impact on the physical observables is obtained. The pattern of measured corrections to the short-distance couplings is found to be consistent with previous analyses of $b$- to $s$-quark transitions, with the largest discrepancy from the Standard Model predictions found to be at the level of 1.8 standard deviations. The global significance of the observed differences in the decay is 1.4 standard deviations.

An amplitude analysis of the $B^0 \to K^{*0} μ^+μ^-$ decay is presented. The analysis is based on data collected by the LHCb experiment from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7,\,8$ and $13$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $4.7$ fb$^{-1}$. For the first time, Wilson coefficients and non-local hadronic contributions are accessed directly from the unbinned data, where the latter are parameterised as a function of $q^2$ with a polynomial expansion. Wilson coefficients and non-local hadronic parameters are determined under two alternative hypotheses: the first relies on experimental information alone, while the second one includes information from theoretical predictions for the non-local contributions. Both models obtain similar results for the parameters of interest. The overall level of compatibility with the Standard Model is evaluated to be between 1.8 and 1.9 standard deviations when looking at the $\mathcal{C}_9$ Wilson coefficient alone, and between 1.3 and 1.4 standard deviations when considering the full set of $\mathcal{C}_9, \, \mathcal{C}_{10}, \, \mathcal{C}_9^\prime$ and $\mathcal{C}_{10}^\prime$ Wilson coefficients. The ranges reflect the theoretical assumptions made in the analysis.

Regularization is critical for solving ill-posed geophysical inverse problems. Explicit regularization is often used, but there are opportunities to explore the implicit regularization effects that are inherent in a Neural Network structure. Researchers have discovered that the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture inherently enforces a regularization that is advantageous for addressing diverse inverse problems in computer vision, including de-noising and in-painting. In this study, we examine the applicability of this implicit regularization to geophysical inversions. The CNN maps an arbitrary vector to the model space. The predicted subsurface model is then fed into a forward numerical simulation to generate corresponding predicted measurements. Subsequently, the objective function value is computed by comparing these predicted measurements with the observed measurements. The backpropagation algorithm is employed to update the trainable parameters of the CNN during the inversion. Note that the CNN in our proposed method does not require training before the inversion, rather, the CNN weights are estimated in the inversion process, hence this is a test-time learning (TTL) approach. In this study, we choose to focus on the Direct Current (DC) resistivity inverse problem, which is representative of typical Tikhonov-style geophysical inversions (e.g. gravity, electromagnetic, etc.), to test our hypothesis. The experimental results demonstrate that the implicit regularization can be useful in some DC resistivity inversions. We also provide a discussion of the potential sources of this implicit regularization introduced from the CNN architecture and discuss some practical guides for applying the proposed method to other geophysical methods.

Practical applications of quantum computing depend on fault-tolerant devices with error correction. Today, the most promising approach is a class of error-correcting codes called surface codes. In this paper, we study the problem of compiling quantum circuits for quantum computers implementing surface codes. The problem involves (1) map** circuit qubits to the device qubits and (2) routing execution paths between pairs of interacting qubits. We call this the surface code map** and routing problem (SCMR).
Solving SCMR near-optimally is critical for both efficiency and correctness. An optimal solution limits the cost of a computation in terms of precious quantum resources and also minimizes the probability of incurring an undetected logical error, which increases with each additional time step.
We study SCMR from a theoretical and practical perspective. First, we prove that SCMR, as well as a constrained version of the problem, is NP-complete. Second, we present a optimal algorithm for solving SCMR that is based on a SAT encoding. Third, we present a spectrum of efficient relaxations of SCMR, for example, by exploiting greedy algorithms for solving the problem of node-disjoint paths. Finally, we implement and evaluate our algorithms on a large suite of real and synthetic circuits. Our results suggest that our relaxations are a powerful tool for compiling realistic workloads. The relaxation-based algorithms are orders of magnitude faster than the optimal algorithm (solving instances with tens of thousands of gates in minutes), while still finding high-quality solutions, achieving the theoretical lower bound on up to 55 out of 168 circuits from a diverse benchmark suite.

The measurement is performed for both $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ mesons having transverse momentum $p_{\text{T}}<14$ GeV/$c$ and rapidity $2.0<y<4.5$, assuming negligible polarisation of the $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ mesons. The production cross-section is measured to be $4.5\pm0.7\pm0.3$ nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The differential cross-sections are measured as functions of several kinematic variables of the $J/ψ$-$ψ(2S)$ candidates. The results are combined with a measurement of $J/ψ$-$J/ψ$ production, giving a cross-section ratio between $J/ψ$-$ψ(2S)$ and $J/ψ$-$J/ψ$ production of $0.274\pm0.044\pm0.008$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

The cross-section of this process is measured to be 16.36$\pm$0.28(stat)$\pm$0.88(syst) nb. The contributions from single-parton scattering and double-parton scattering are separated based on the dependence of the cross-section on the absolute rapidity difference $Δy$ between the two $J/ψ$ mesons. The effective cross-section of double-parton scattering is measured to be $σ_{\text{eff}}=$13.1$\pm$1.8(stat)$\pm$2.3(syst) mb. The distribution of the azimuthal angle $φ_{\text{CS}}$ of one of the $J/ψ$ mesons in the Collins-Soper frame and the $p_{\text{T}}$-spectrum of the $J/ψ$ pairs are also measured for the study of the gluon transverse-momentum dependent distributions inside protons. The extracted values of $\langle\cos2φ_{\text{CS}}\rangle$ and $\langle\cos4φ_{\text{CS}}\rangle$ are consistent with zero, but the presence of azimuthal asymmetry at a few percent level is allowed.

Quantum spin liquids represent exotic states of spin systems characterized by long-range entanglement and emergent fractionalized quasiparticles. It is generally believed that disorder is hostile to quantum spin liquids. In our study, we investigated the magnetic properties of a kagome system, YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$[(Cl$_x$Br$_{1-x}$)$_{3-y}$(OH)$_{y}$]. Within this system, some of the hexagons exhibit alternate bonds along the Cu-O-Cu exchange paths, while others remain uniform. We found that a long-range antiferromagnetic order emerges when uniform hexagons dominate. Conversely, possible quantum-spin-liquid state arises when the number of alternate-bond hexagons exceeds about 2/3. Therefore, the alternate-bond hexagons, typically considered as disorders, actually serve as the building blocks of the quantum spin liquid in this system. Notably, the low-temperature properties of the quantum spin liquid are directly associated with the height of the out-of-plane yttrium ions, which may be linked to changes in superexchange energies. Our results suggest that understanding the magnetic ground states in this system lies beyond the theoretical framework of the Heisenberg model constructed on the kagome lattice.

Learning fine-grained embeddings from coarse labels is a challenging task due to limited label granularity supervision, i.e., lacking the detailed distinctions required for fine-grained tasks. The task becomes even more demanding when attempting few-shot fine-grained recognition, which holds practical significance in various applications. To address these challenges, we propose a novel method that embeds visual embeddings into a hyperbolic space and enhances their discriminative ability with a hierarchical cosine margins manner. Specifically, the hyperbolic space offers distinct advantages, including the ability to capture hierarchical relationships and increased expressive power, which favors modeling fine-grained objects. Based on the hyperbolic space, we further enforce relatively large/small similarity margins between coarse/fine classes, respectively, yielding the so-called hierarchical cosine margins manner. While enforcing similarity margins in the regular Euclidean space has become popular for deep embedding learning, applying it to the hyperbolic space is non-trivial and validating the benefit for coarse-to-fine generalization is valuable. Extensive experiments conducted on five benchmark datasets showcase the effectiveness of our proposed method, yielding state-of-the-art results surpassing competing methods.

Flow harmonic coefficients, $v_n$, which are the key to studying the hydrodynamics of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in heavy-ion collisions, have been measured in various collision systems and kinematic regions and using various particle species. The study of flow harmonics in a wide pseudorapidity range is particularly valuable to understand the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the QGP. This paper presents the first LHCb results of the second- and the third-order flow harmonic coefficients of charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum in the forward region, corresponding to pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.9, using the data collected from PbPb collisions in 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of $5.02$ TeV. The coefficients measured using the two-particle angular correlation analysis method are smaller than the central-pseudorapidity measurements at ALICE and ATLAS from the same collision system but share similar features.

In addition, the $D^+_{s}$ to $D^+$ cross-section ratio is measured as a function of the charged particle multiplicity in the event. An enhanced $D^+_{s}$ to $D^+$ production in high-multiplicity events is observed for the whole measured $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ range, in particular at low $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ and backward rapidity, where the significance exceeds six standard deviations. This constitutes the first observation of strangeness enhancement in charm quark hadronization in high-multiplicity $p\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions. The results are also qualitatively consistent with the presence of quark coalescence as an additional charm quark hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity proton-lead collisions.

The thermodynamic non-equilibrium (TNE) effects and the relationships between various TNE effects and entropy production rate, morphology, kinematics, and dynamics during two initially static droplet coalescence are studied in detail via the discrete Boltzmann method. The temporal evolutions of the total TNE strength ($D^*$) and the total entropy production rate ($\dot S$) can both provide concise, effective and consistent physical criteria to distinguish the stages of droplet coalescence. Specifically, when $\bar D^*$ and $\dot S$ reach their maxima, it corresponds to the time when the liquid-vapor interface length changes the fastest; when $D^*$ and $\dot S$ reach their valleys, it corresponds to the moment of the droplet being the longest elliptical shape. During the merging process, the force contributed by surface tension in the coalescence direction acts as the primary promoting force for droplet coalescence and reaches its maximum concurrently with coalescent acceleration. In contrast, the force contributed by non-organized momentum fluxes (NOMFs) in the coalescing direction inhibits the merging process and reaches its maximum at the same time as $D^*$. For the coalescence of two unequal size droplets, the smaller droplet exhibits larger values for TNE intensity, merging velocity, driving force contributed by surface tension, and resistance contributed by NOMFs. Moreover, these values gradually increase with the initial radius ratio of the large and small droplets due to larger curvature. However, non-equilibrium components and forces related to shear velocity in the small droplet, are all smaller than those in the larger droplet and gradually decrease with the radius ratio.

The $D^{*}$ polarization fraction $F_{L}^{D^{*}}$ is measured in two $q^{2}$ regions, below and above 7 GeV$^{2}/c^{4}$, where $q^{2}$ is defined as the squared invariant mass of the $τν_τ$ system. The $F_{L}^{D^{*}}$ values are measured to be $0.51 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.03$ and $0.35 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.02$ for the lower and higher $q^{2}$ regions, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The average value over the whole $q^{2}$ range is: $$F_{L}^{D^{*}} = 0.43 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03.$$ These results are compatible with the Standard Model predictions.

Momentum measurements for very high momentum charged particles, such as muons from electroweak vector boson decays, are particularly susceptible to charge-dependent curvature biases that arise from misalignments of tracking detectors. Low momentum charged particles used in alignment procedures have limited sensitivity to coherent displacements of such detectors, and therefore are unable to fully constrain these misalignments to the precision necessary for studies of electroweak physics. Additional approaches are therefore required to understand and correct for these effects. In this paper the curvature biases present at the LHCb detector are studied using the pseudomass method in proton-proton collision data recorded at centre of mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV during 2016, 2017 and 2018. The biases are determined using $Z\toμ^+μ^-$ decays in intervals defined by the data-taking period, magnet polarity and muon direction. Correcting for these biases, which are typically at the $10^{-4}$ GeV$^{-1}$ level, improves the $Z\toμ^+μ^-$ mass resolution by roughly 18% and eliminates several pathological trends in the kinematic-dependence of the mean dimuon invariant mass.

Automated axon tracing via fully supervised learning requires large amounts of 3D brain imagery, which is time consuming and laborious to obtain. It also requires expertise. Thus, there is a need for more efficient segmentation and centerline detection techniques to use in conjunction with automated annotation tools. Topology-preserving methods ensure that segmented components maintain geometric connectivity, which is especially meaningful for applications where volumetric data is used, and these methods often make use of morphological thinning algorithms as the thinned outputs can be useful for both segmentation and centerline detection of curvilinear structures. Current morphological thinning approaches used in conjunction with topology-preserving methods are prone to over-thinning and require manual configuration of hyperparameters. We propose an automated approach for morphological smoothing using geometric assessment of the radius of tubular structures in brain microscopy volumes, and apply average pooling to prevent over-thinning. We use this approach to formulate a loss function, which we call Geo-metric Assessment-driven Topological Smoothing loss, or GATS. Our approach increased segmentation and center-line detection evaluation metrics by 2%-5% across multiple datasets, and improved the Betti error rates by 9%. Our ablation study showed that geometric assessment of tubular structures achieved higher segmentation and centerline detection scores, and using average pooling for morphological smoothing in place of thinning algorithms reduced the Betti errors. We observed increased topological preservation during automated annotation of 3D axons volumes from models trained with GATS.

In the era of large scale pretrained models, Knowledge Distillation (KD) serves an important role in transferring the wisdom of computationally heavy teacher models to lightweight, efficient student models while preserving performance. Traditional KD paradigms, however, assume readily available access to teacher models for frequent inference -- a notion increasingly at odds with the realities of costly, often proprietary, large scale models. Addressing this gap, our paper considers how to minimize the dependency on teacher model inferences in KD in a setting we term Few Teacher Inference Knowledge Distillation (FTI KD). We observe that prevalent KD techniques and state of the art data augmentation strategies fall short in this constrained setting. Drawing inspiration from educational principles that emphasize learning through comparison, we propose Comparative Knowledge Distillation (CKD), which encourages student models to understand the nuanced differences in a teacher model's interpretations of samples. Critically, CKD provides additional learning signals to the student without making additional teacher calls. We also extend the principle of CKD to groups of samples, enabling even more efficient learning from limited teacher calls. Empirical evaluation across varied experimental settings indicates that CKD consistently outperforms state of the art data augmentation and KD techniques.

Forward and backward rapidity samples correspond to integrated luminosities of 13.6 $\pm$ 0.3 nb$^{-1}$ and 20.8 $\pm$ 0.5 nb$^{-1}$, respectively. The result is presented as a function of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum $p_{T,J/ψ}$ in the range 1$<p_{T, J/ψ}<20$ GeV/$c$. The $F_{χc}$ fraction at forward rapidity is compatible with the LHCb measurement performed in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV, whereas the result at backward rapidity is 2.4 $σ$ larger than in the forward region for $1<p_{T, J/ψ}<3$ GeV/$c$. The increase of $F_{χc}$ at low $p_{T, J/ψ}$ at backward rapidity is compatible with the suppression of the $ψ$(2S) contribution to the prompt $J/ψ$ yield. The lack of in-medium dissociation of $χ_c$ states observed in this study sets an upper limit of 180 MeV on the free energy available in these pPb collisions to dissociate or inhibit charmonium state formation.

The success of self-supervised contrastive learning hinges on identifying positive data pairs, such that when they are pushed together in embedding space, the space encodes useful information for subsequent downstream tasks. Constructing positive pairs is non-trivial as the pairing must be similar enough to reflect a shared semantic meaning, but different enough to capture within-class variation. Classical approaches in vision use augmentations to exploit well-established invariances to construct positive pairs, but invariances in the time-series domain are much less obvious. In our work, we propose a novel method of using a learned measure for identifying positive pairs. Our Retrieval-Based Reconstruction (REBAR) measure measures the similarity between two sequences as the reconstruction error that results from reconstructing one sequence with retrieved information from the other. Then, if the two sequences have high REBAR similarity, we label them as a positive pair. Through validation experiments, we show that the REBAR error is a predictor of mutual class membership. Once integrated into a contrastive learning framework, our REBAR method learns an embedding that achieves state-of-the-art performance on downstream tasks across various modalities.

A search for $\textit{CP}$ violation in $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} π^{-} $ and $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{-} π^{+} $ decays is reported. The search is performed using an unbinned model-independent method known as the energy test that probes local $\textit{CP}$ violation in the phase space of the decays. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of $5.4~$fb$^{-1}$ collected in proton-proton collisions by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$~TeV, amounting to approximately 950 thousand and 620 thousand signal candidates for the $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{-} π^{+} $ and $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} π^{-} $ modes, respectively. The method is validated using $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-} π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} $ and $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-} $ decays, where $\textit{CP}$-violating effects are expected to be negligible, and using background-enhanced regions of the signal decays. The results are consistent with $\textit{CP}$ symmetry in both the $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{-} π^{+} $ and the $D^{0} \rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} π^{-} $ decays, with $p$-values for the hypothesis of no $\textit{CP}$ violation of 70% and 66%, respectively.

Proton-proton collisions are studied at center-of-mass energies of $5.02$ and $13~{\rm TeV}$, and proton-lead collisions are studied at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of $8.16~{\rm TeV}$. The studies are performed in center-of-mass rapidity regions $2.5<y_{\rm c.m.}<3.5$ (forward rapidity) and $-4.0<y_{\rm c.m.}<-3.0$ (backward rapidity) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The $η$ and $η'$ production cross sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum for $1.5<p_{\rm T}<10~{\rm GeV}$ and $3<p_{\rm T}<10~{\rm GeV}$, respectively. The differential cross sections are used to calculate nuclear modification factors. The nuclear modification factors for $η$ and $η'$ mesons agree at both forward and backward rapidity, showing no significant evidence of mass dependence. The differential cross sections of $η$ mesons are also used to calculate $η/π^0$ cross section ratios, which show evidence of a deviation from the world average. These studies offer new constraints on mass-dependent nuclear effects in heavy-ion collisions, as well as $η$ and $η'$ meson fragmentation.

The production rate of $Λ_{b}^{0}$ baryons relative to $B^{0}$ mesons in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of $Λ_{b}^{0}$ to $B^{0}$ production cross-sections shows a significant dependence on both the transverse momentum and the measured charged-particle multiplicity. At low multiplicity, the ratio measured at LHCb is consistent with the value measured in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions, and increases by a factor of $\sim2$ with increasing multiplicity. At relatively low transverse momentum, the ratio of $Λ_{b}^{0}$ to $B^{0}$ cross-sections is higher than what is measured in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions, but converges with the $e^{+}e^{-}$ ratio as the momentum increases. These results imply that the evolution of heavy $b$ quarks into final-state hadrons is influenced by the density of the hadronic environment produced in the collision. Comparisons with several models and implications for the mechanisms enforcing quark confinement are discussed.

We observe a plateau at magnetization 1/9 Bohr magneton per magnetic ion (Cu). Furthermore, in the vicinity of this plateau we observe sets of strong oscillations in the magnetic torque, reminiscent of quantum oscillations in metals. Such oscillations have never been seen in a wide gap insulator and point to an exotic origin. While the temperature dependence of these oscillations follows Fermi-liquid-theory predictions, they are approximately periodic in the magnetic field $H$, as opposed to $1/H$ in conventional metals. Furthermore, a strong angular dependence is observed for the period, which indicates an orbital origin for this effect. We show that the 1/9 plateau and the associated oscillations are consistent with the appearance of a quantum-spin-liquid state whose excitations are fermionic spinons that obey a Dirac spectrum. The oscillations are in response to an emergent gauge field. Our results provide strong evidence that fractionalized particles coupled to the elusive emergent gauge field have been observed.

The identification of helium nuclei at LHCb is achieved using a method based on measurements of ionisation losses in the silicon sensors and timing measurements in the Outer Tracker drift tubes. The background from photon conversions is reduced using the RICH detectors and an isolation requirement. The method is developed using $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13\,{\rm TeV}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment in the years 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.5\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$. A total of around $10^5$ helium and antihelium candidates are identified with negligible background contamination. The helium identification efficiency is estimated to be approximately $50\%$ with a corresponding background rejection rate of up to $\mathcal O(10^{12})$. These results demonstrate the feasibility of a rich programme of measurements of QCD and astrophysics interest involving light nuclei.

The measurement is performed by analysing the signal yield variation across the $D$ decay phase space and is independent of any amplitude model. The data sample used was collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions and corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The CKM angle $γ$ is determined to be $(69^{+13}_{-14})^{\circ}$ using the measured $CP$-violating observables. The hadronic parameters $r^{D^* K^{\pm}}_B, r^{D^* π^{\pm}}_B, δ^{D^* K^{\pm}}_B, δ^{D^* π^{\pm}}_B$, which are the ratios and strong phase differences between favoured and suppressed $B^{\pm}$ decays, are also reported.

Interactions involving children span a wide range of important domains from learning to clinical diagnostic and therapeutic contexts. Automated analyses of such interactions are motivated by the need to seek accurate insights and offer scale and robustness across diverse and wide-ranging conditions. Identifying the speech segments belonging to the child is a critical step in such modeling. Conventional child-adult speaker classification typically relies on audio modeling approaches, overlooking visual signals that convey speech articulation information, such as lip motion. Building on the foundation of an audio-only child-adult speaker classification pipeline, we propose incorporating visual cues through active speaker detection and visual processing models. Our framework involves video pre-processing, utterance-level child-adult speaker detection, and late fusion of modality-specific predictions. We demonstrate from extensive experiments that a visually aided classification pipeline enhances the accuracy and robustness of the classification. We show relative improvements of 2.38% and 3.97% in F1 macro score when one face and two faces are visible, respectively.

The data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $(1.58\pm0.02)\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ is collected by the LHCb experiment at the LHC. The differential production cross-sections are measured using $D^+$ and $D^+_{s}$ candidates with transverse momentum in the range of $0<p_{\mathrm{T}} <14\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$ and rapidities in the ranges of $1.5<y^*<4.0$ and $-5.0<y^*<-2.5$ in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system. For both particles, the nuclear modification factor and the forward-backward production ratio are determined. These results are compared with theoretical models that include initial-state nuclear effects. In addition, measurements of the cross-section ratios between $D^+$, $D^+_{s}$ and $D^0$ mesons are presented, providing a baseline for studying the charm hadronization in lead-lead collisions at LHC energies.

In addition, measurements of the CP-violation parameters of the individual channels are reported and a combination with the LHCb Run 1 measurements is performed.

We introduce a new type of query mechanism for collecting human feedback, called the perceptual adjustment query ( PAQ). Being both informative and cognitively lightweight, the PAQ adopts an inverted measurement scheme, and combines advantages from both cardinal and ordinal queries. We showcase the PAQ in the metric learning problem, where we collect PAQ measurements to learn an unknown Mahalanobis distance. This gives rise to a high-dimensional, low-rank matrix estimation problem to which standard matrix estimators cannot be applied. Consequently, we develop a two-stage estimator for metric learning from PAQs, and provide sample complexity guarantees for this estimator. We present numerical simulations demonstrating the performance of the estimator and its notable properties.

We present a formulation of spin-conserving and spin-flip, hybrid time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), including the calculation of analytical forces, which allows for efficient calculations of excited state properties of solid-state systems with hundreds to thousands of atoms. We discuss an implementation on both GPU and CPU based architectures, along with several acceleration techniques. We then apply our formulation to the study of several point defects in semiconductors and insulators, specifically the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy and neutral silicon-vacancy centers in diamond, the neutral divacancy center in 4H silicon carbide, and the neutral oxygen-vacancy center in magnesium oxide. Our results highlight the importance of taking into account structural relaxations in excited states, in order to interpret and predict optical absorption and emission mechanisms in spin-defects.

We utilize the Open Accelerator (OpenACC) approach for graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerated particle-resolved thermal lattice Boltzmann (LB) simulation. We adopt the momentum-exchange method to calculate fluid-particle interactions to preserve the simplicity of the LB method. To address load imbalance issues, we extend the indirect addressing method to collect fluid-particle link information at each timestep and store indices of fluid-particle link in a fixed index array. We simulate the sedimentation of 4,800 hot particles in cold fluids with a domain size of $4000^{2}$, and the simulation achieves 1750 million lattice updates per second (MLUPS) on a single GPU. Furthermore, we implement a hybrid OpenACC and message passing interface (MPI) approach for multi-GPU accelerated simulation. This approach incorporates four optimization strategies, including building domain lists, utilizing request-answer communication, overlap** communications with computations, and executing computation tasks concurrently. By reducing data communication between GPUs, hiding communication latency through overlap** computation, and increasing the utilization of GPU resources, we achieve improved performance, reaching 10846 MLUPS using 8 GPUs. Our results demonstrate that the OpenACC-based GPU acceleration is promising for particle-resolved thermal lattice Boltzmann simulation.

Advertisement videos (ads) play an integral part in the domain of Internet e-commerce as they amplify the reach of particular products to a broad audience or can serve as a medium to raise awareness about specific issues through concise narrative structures. The narrative structures of advertisements involve several elements like reasoning about the broad content (topic and the underlying message) and examining fine-grained details involving the transition of perceived tone due to the specific sequence of events and interaction among characters. In this work, to facilitate the understanding of advertisements along the three important dimensions of topic categorization, perceived tone transition, and social message detection, we introduce a multimodal multilingual benchmark called MM-AU composed of over 8.4K videos (147 hours) curated from multiple web sources. We explore multiple zero-shot reasoning baselines through the application of large language models on the ads transcripts. Further, we demonstrate that leveraging signals from multiple modalities, including audio, video, and text, in multimodal transformer-based supervised models leads to improved performance compared to unimodal approaches.

The first measurement of the $Z$ boson production cross-section at centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 5.02\,$TeV in the forward region is reported, using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment in year 2017, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $100 \pm 2\,\rm{pb^{-1}}$. The production cross-section is measured for final-state muons in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.5$ with transverse momentum $p_{\rm{T}}> 20\,\rm{GeV/}\it{c}$. The integrated cross-section is determined to be \[
σ_{Z \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}} = 39.6 \pm 0.7\,(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.6\,(\rm{syst}) \pm 0.8\,(\rm{lumi}) \ \rm{pb} \] for the di-muon invariant mass in the range $60<M_{μμ}<120\,\rm{GeV/}\it{c^{2}}$. This result and the differential cross-section results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling.
Based on a previous LHCb measurement of the $Z$ boson production cross-section in $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, the nuclear modification factor $R_{p\rm{Pb}}$ is measured for the first time at this energy. The measured values are $1.2^{+0.5}_{-0.3}\,(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.1\,(\rm{syst})$ in the forward region ($1.53<y^*_μ<4.03$) and $3.6^{+1.6}_{-0.9}\,(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.2\,(\rm{syst})$ in the backward region ($-4.97<y^*_μ<-2.47$), where $y^*_μ$ represents the muon rapidity in the centre-of-mass frame.

A search for rare $B \rightarrow D μ^+ μ^-$ decays is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. No significant signals are observed in the non-resonant $μ^+μ^-$ modes, and upper limits of $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow \overline{D}^0 μ^+ μ^-) < 5.1 \times 10^{-8}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow D_s^+ μ^+ μ^-) < 3.2 \times 10^{-8}$, $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow \overline{D}^0 μ^+ μ^-) < 1.6 \times 10^{-7}$ and $f_c/f_u \cdot \mathcal{B}(B_c^+ \rightarrow D_s^+ μ^+ μ^-) < 9.6 \times 10^{-8}$ are set at the 95\% confidence level, where $f_c$ and $f_u$ are the fragmentation fractions of a $B$ meson with a $c$ and $u$ quark respectively in proton-proton collisions. Each result is either the first such measurement or an improvement by three orders of magnitude on an existing limit. Separate upper limits are calculated when the muon pair originates from a $J/ψ\rightarrow μ^+ μ^-$ decay. The branching fraction of $B_c^+ \rightarrow D_s^+ J/ψ$ multiplied by the fragmentation-fraction ratio is measured to be $f_c/f_u \cdot \mathcal{B}(B_c^+ \rightarrow D_s^+ J/ψ) = (1.63 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Despite the growing number of confident binary black hole coalescences observed through gravitational waves so far, the astrophysical origin of these binaries remains uncertain. Orbital eccentricity is one of the clearest tracers of binary formation channels. Identifying binary eccentricity, however, remains challenging due to the limited availability of gravitational waveforms that include effects of eccentricity. Here, we present observational results for a waveform-independent search sensitive to eccentric black hole coalescences, covering the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. We identified no new high-significance candidates beyond those that were already identified with searches focusing on quasi-circular binaries. We determine the sensitivity of our search to high-mass (total mass $M>70$ $M_\odot$) binaries covering eccentricities up to 0.3 at 15 Hz orbital frequency, and use this to compare model predictions to search results. Assuming all detections are indeed quasi-circular, for our fiducial population model, we place an upper limit for the merger rate density of high-mass binaries with eccentricities $0 < e \leq 0.3$ at $0.33$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ at 90\% confidence level.

Using a sample of approximately 349 000 $B^{0}_{s}$ signal decays with an invariant $K^{+}K^{-}$ mass in the vicinity of the $φ(1020)$ resonance, the $CP$-violating phase $φ_s$ is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the $B^0_s$-$\bar{B}^0_s$ system, $ΔΓ_s$, and the difference of the average $B^0_s$ and $B^0$ meson decay widths, $Γ_s-Γ_d$. The values obtained are $φ_s = \ -0.039 \pm 0.022 \pm 0.006$ rad, $ΔΓ_s = 0.0845 \pm 0.0044 \pm 0.0024 $ ps$^{-1}$ and $Γ_s-Γ_d = -0.0056 ^{+ 0.0013}_{-0.0015} \pm 0.0014$ ps$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with the previous LHCb analyses of this decay. These results are combined with previous independent LHCb measurements. The phase $φ_s$ is also measured independently for each polarization state of the $K^{+}K^{-}$ system and shows no evidence for polarization dependence.

This paper reports the observation of the decays $B_{(s)}^{0}\to D_{s1}(2536)^{\mp}K^{\pm}$ using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to the normalisation channel $B^{0}\to \overline{D}^{0}K^{+}K^{-}$. The $D_{s1}(2536)^{-}$ meson is reconstructed in the $\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}$ decay channel and the products of branching fractions are measured to be $$\mathcal{B}(B_{s}^{0}\to D_{s1}(2536)^{\mp}K^{\pm})\times\mathcal{B}(D_{s1}(2536)^{-}\to\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-})=(2.49\pm0.11\pm0.12\pm0.25\pm0.06)\times 10^{-5}, $$ $$\mathcal{B}(B^{0}\to D_{s1}(2536)^{\mp}K^{\pm})\times\mathcal{B}(D_{s1}(2536)^{-}\to\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}) = (0.510\pm0.021\pm0.036\pm0.050)\times 10^{-5}.$$ The first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third arises from the uncertainty of the branching fraction of the $B^{0}\to \overline{D}^{0}K^{+}K^{-}$ normalisation channel. The last uncertainty in the $B_{s}^{0}$ result is due to the limited knowledge of the fragmentation fraction ratio, $f_{s}/f_{d}$. The significance for the $B_{s}^{0}$ and $B^{0}$ signals is larger than $10\,σ$. The ratio of the helicity amplitudes which governs the angular distribution of the $D_{s1}(2536)^{-}\to\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}$ decay is determined from the data. The ratio of the $S$- and $D$-wave amplitudes is found to be $1.11\pm0.15\pm 0.06$ and its phase $0.70\pm0.09\pm 0.04$ rad, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

The decay $Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-$ is observed using a proton-proton collision data sample collected at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb$^{-1}$. This process is mediated by the $s\to u\bar{u}d$ quark-level transition, where the $b$ quark in the $Ξ_b^-$ baryon is a spectator in the decay. Averaging the results obtained using the two $Λ_b^0$ decay modes, $Λ_b^0\toΛ_c^+π^-$ and $Λ_b^0\toΛ_c^+π^-π^+π^-$, the relative production ratio is measured to be $(f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)=(7.3\pm0.8\pm0.6)\times10^{-4}$. Here the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and $f_{Ξ_b^-}(f_{Λ_b^0})$ is the fragmentation fraction for a $b$ quark into a $Ξ_b^-$ ($Λ_b^0$) baryon. Using an independent measurement of $f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}$, the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)=(0.89\pm0.10\pm0.07\pm0.29)\%$ is obtained, where the last uncertainty is due to the assumed SU(3) flavor symmetry in the determination of $f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}$.

In this paper, we consider the network latency estimation, which has been an important metric for network performance. However, a large scale of network latency estimation requires a lot of computing time. Therefore, we propose a new method that is much faster and maintains high accuracy. The data structure of network nodes can form a matrix, and the tensor model can be formed by introducing the time dimension. Thus, the entire problem can be be summarized as a tensor completion problem. The main idea of our method is improving the tensor leverage sampling strategy and introduce tensor QR decomposition into tensor completion. To achieve faster tensor leverage sampling, we replace tensor singular decomposition (t-SVD) with tensor CSVD-QR to appoximate t-SVD. To achieve faster completion for incomplete tensor, we use the tensor $L_{2,1}$-norm rather than traditional tensor nuclear norm. Furthermore, we introduce tensor QR decomposition into alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework. Numerical experiments witness that our method is faster than state-of-art algorithms with satisfactory accuracy.

Explanation methods for machine learning models tend not to provide any formal guarantees and may not reflect the underlying decision-making process. In this work, we analyze stability as a property for reliable feature attribution methods. We prove that relaxed variants of stability are guaranteed if the model is sufficiently Lipschitz with respect to the masking of features. We develop a smoothing method called Multiplicative Smoothing (MuS) to achieve such a model. We show that MuS overcomes the theoretical limitations of standard smoothing techniques and can be integrated with any classifier and feature attribution method. We evaluate MuS on vision and language models with various feature attribution methods, such as LIME and SHAP, and demonstrate that MuS endows feature attributions with non-trivial stability guarantees.

We report pore-scale statistical properties of temperature and thermal energy dissipation rate in a two-dimensional porous Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) cell. High-resolution direct numerical simulations were carried out for the fixed Rayleigh number ($Ra$) of $10^{9}$ and the Prandtl numbers ($Pr$) of 5.3 and 0.7. We consider sparse porous media where the solid porous matrix is impermeable to both fluid and heat flux. The porosity ($φ$) range $0.86 \leq φ\le 0.98$, the corresponding Darcy number ($Da$) range $10^{-4}<Da<10^{-2}$ and the porous Rayleigh number ($Ra^{*}=Ra\cdot Da$) range $10^{5} < Ra^{*} < 10^{7}$. Our results indicate that the plume dynamics in porous RB convection are less coherent when the solid porous matrix is impermeable to heat flux, as compared to the case where it is permeable. The averaged vertical temperature profiles remain almost a constant value in the bulk, while the mean-square fluctuations of temperature increases with decreasing porosity. Furthermore, the absolute values of skewness and flatness of the temperature are much smaller in the porous RB cell than in the canonical RB cell. We found that intense thermal energy dissipation occurs near the top and bottom walls, as well as in the bulk region of the porous RB cell. In comparison with the canonical RB cell, the small-scale thermal energy dissipation field is more intermittent in the porous cell, although both cells exhibit a non-log-normal distribution of thermal energy dissipation rate. This work highlights the impact of impermeable solid porous matrices on the statistical properties of temperature and thermal energy dissipation rate, and the findings may have practical applications in geophysics, energy and environmental engineering, as well as other fields that involve the transport of heat through porous media.

Object rearrangement is a fundamental sub-task in accomplishing a great many physical tasks. As such, effectively executing rearrangement is an important skill for intelligent robots to master. In this study, we conduct the first algorithmic study on optimally solving the problem of Multi-layer Object Rearrangement on a Tabletop (MORT), in which one object may be relocated at a time, and an object can only be moved if other objects do not block its top surface. In addition, any intermediate structure during the reconfiguration process must be physically stable, i.e., it should stand without external support. To tackle the dual challenges of untangling the dependencies between objects and ensuring structural stability, we develop an algorithm that interleaves the computation of the optimal rearrangement plan and structural stability checking. Using a carefully constructed integer linear programming (ILP) model, our algorithm, Stability-aware Integer Programming-based Planner (SIPP), readily scales to optimally solve complex rearrangement problems of 3D structures with over 60 building blocks, with solution quality significantly outperforming natural greedy best-first approaches.
