The human factor: results of a small-angle scattering data analysis Round Robin
Abstract: A Round Robin study has been carried out to estimate the impact of the human element in small-angle scattering data analysis. Four corrected datasets were provided to participants ready for analysis. All datasets were measured on samples containing spherical scatterers, with two datasets in dilute dispersions, and two from powders. Most of the 46 participants correctly identified the number of pop… ▽ More

Hyperfine interaction in cobalt by high-resolution neutron spectroscopy
Abstract: We have investigated the ferromagnetic phase transition of elemental Co by high-resolution neutron backscattering spectroscopy. We monitored the splitting of the nuclear levels by the hyperfine field at the Co nucleus. The energy of this hyperfine splitting is identified as the order parameter of the ferromagnetic phase transition. By measuring the temperature dependence of the energy we determine… ▽ More

Form factor (Fourier shape transform) of polygon and polyhedron
Abstract: The Fourier transform of the indicator function of arbitrary polygons and polyhedra is computed for complex wavevectors. Using the divergence theorem and Stokes' theorem, closed expressions are obtained. Apparent singularities, all removable, are discussed in detail. Loss of precision due to cancellation near the singularities can be avoided by using series expansions.

Spin correlations in the extended kagome system YBaCo3FeO7
Abstract: The transition metal based oxide YBaCo3FeO7 is structurally related to the mineral Swedenborgite SbNaBe4O7, a polar non-centrosymmetric crystal system. The magnetic Co3Fe sublattice consists of a tetrahedral network containing kagome-like layers with trigonal interlayer sites. This geometry causes frustration effects for magnetic ordering, which were investigated by magnetization measurements, Mös… ▽ More

Hydrogen Release from Sodium Alanate Observed by Time-resolved Neutron Backscattering
Abstract: Innermolecular motion in Na3AlH6 gives rise to a Lorentzian spectrum with a wavenumber-independent width of about 1 micro-eV at 180 deg C, which is probably due to rotation of AlH6 tetrahedra. There is no such quasielastic line in NaAlH4 or NaH. Based on this finding, time-resolved measurements on the neutron backscattering spectrometer SPHERES were used to monitor the decomposition kinetics of so… ▽ More

The Dynamic Transition of Protein Hydration Water
Abstract: Thin layers of water on biomolecular and other nanostructured surfaces can be supercooled to temperatures not accessible with bulk water. Chen et al. [PNAS 103, 9012 (2006)] suggested that anomalies near 220 K observed by quasi-elastic neutron scattering can be explained by a hidden critical point of bulk water. Based on more sensitive measurements of water on perdeuterated phycocyanin, using th… ▽ More

Fourier Transform of the Stretched Exponential Function: Analytic Error Bounds, Double Exponential Transform, and Open-Source Implementation libkww
Abstract: The C library \texttt{libkww} provides functions to compute the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts function, i.e.\ the Laplace-Fourier transform of the stretched (or compressed) exponential function $\exp(-t^β)$ for exponents $β$ between 0.1 and 1.9 with sixteen-digits accuracy. Analytic error bounds are derived for the low and high frequency series expansions. For intermediate frequencies the numeric inte… ▽ More

Structural Relaxation and Mode Coupling in a Simple Liquid: Depolarized Light Scattering in Benzene
Abstract: We have measured depolarized light scattering in liquid benzene over the whole accessible temperature range and over four decades in frequency. Between 40 and 180 GHz we find a susceptibility peak due to structural relaxation. This peak shows stretching and time-temperature scaling as known from $α$ relaxation in glass-forming materials. A simple mode-coupling model provides consistent fits of t… ▽ More

Brillouin Scattering Study of Propylene Carbonate: An Evaluation of Phenomenological and Mode Coupling Analyses
Abstract: Brillouin scattering spectra of the molecular glassformer propylene carbonate (PC) in the temperature range 140 K to 350 K were analyzed using both the phenomenological Cole-Davidson memory function and a hybrid memory function consisting of the Cole-Davidson function plus a power-law term representing the critical decay part of the fast beta relaxation. The spectra were also analyzed using the… ▽ More

Calcium Rubidium Nitrate: Mode-Coupling $β$ Scaling without Factorization
Abstract: The fast dynamics of viscous calcium rubidium nitrate is investigated by depolarized light scattering, neutron scattering and dielectric loss. Fast $β$ relaxation evolves as in calcium potassium nitrate. The dynamic susceptibilities can be described by the asymptotic scaling law of mode-coupling theory with a shape parameter $λ= 0.79$; the temperature dependence of the amplitudes extrapolates to… ▽ More

Multiple-scattering effects on incoherent neutron scattering in glasses and viscous liquids
Abstract: Incoherent neutron scattering experiments are simulated for simple dynamic models: a glass (with a smooth distribution of harmonic vibrations) and a viscous liquid (described by schematic mode-coupling equations). In most situations multiple scattering has little influence upon spectral distributions, but it completely distorts the wavenumber-dependent amplitudes. This explains an anomaly observ… ▽ More

Vibrational States of Glassy and Crystalline Orthotherphenyl
Abstract: Low-frequency vibrations of glassy and crystalline orthoterphenyl are studied by means of neutron scattering. Phonon dispersions are measured along the main axes of a single crystal, and the corresponding longitudinal and transversal sound velocities are obtained. For glassy and polycrystalline samples, a density of vibrational states is determined and cross-checked against other dynamic observa… ▽ More

Propylene Carbonate Reexamined: Mode-Coupling $β$ Scaling without Factorisation ?
Abstract: The dynamic susceptibility of propylene carbonate in the moderately viscous regime above $T_{\rm c}$ is reinvestigated by incoherent neutron and depolarised light scattering, and compared to dielectric loss and solvation response. Depending on the strength of $α$ relaxation, a more or less extended $β$ scaling regime is found. Mode-coupling fits yield consistently $λ=0.72$ and $T_{\rm c}=182 $K,… ▽ More

Wavenumber dependence of structural alpha relaxation in a molecular liquid
Abstract: Structural alpha relaxation in liquid orthoterphenyl is studied by means of coherent neutron time-of-flight and backscattering spectroscopy over a large temperature range. Not only amplitude and relaxation time but also the spectral line shape show a significant variation with wavenumber. As expected from mode coupling theory, these variations are correlated with the static structure factor. Eve… ▽ More
