In this work we analyze the scenario where a MeV scale $L_μ- L_τ$ gauge boson can explain the deficit in the diffuse ultra high energy (UHE) astrophysical neutrino spectrum observed in IceCube, as well as the discrepancy between experimental and $e^+e^-$ dispersion data driven SM calculations of the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We map the parameter space of the model where the elastic resonant s-channel scattering of UHE neutrinos with the cosmic neutrino background, mediated by the new Z', can improve the description of the observed cascade and track spectra over the no-scattering hypothesis. Comparing to recent NA64$μ$ results, we find that some part of the parameter space remains unexplored, but at a data volume of $10^{11}$ muons on target NA64$μ$ will completely probe this region.

We study the determination of new physics (NP) parameters using the optimal observable technique (OOT) in situations where the standard model (SM) dominates over the NP effects, and when the NP dominates over the SM contribution, using the 2-Higgs doublet model as an illustrative example; for the case of SM domination we extend our results using an effective theory parameterization of NP effects. For the case of SM dominance we concentrate on $t \bar{t}$ production in an $e^+e^-$ collider, while for the case of NP dominance we consider both $t \bar{t}$ production and pair production of charged scalars, also in an $e^+e^-$ collider. We discuss the effects of the efficiency of background reduction, luminosity and beam polarization, and provide a comparison of the optimal uncertainties with those obtained using a standard $χ^2$ analysis of (Monte Carlo generated) collider data.

E_T$, where $n = 2,3,4$. The NP is parameterized via 4-Fermi effective $t\bar{t} \ell^+ \ell^-$ contact interactions of various types, which are generated by multi-TeV heavy scalar, vector or tensor exchanges in $t \bar t \to \ell^+ \ell^-$; we focus on the case of $\ell=e,μ$. We match the 4-Fermi $t t \ell \ell$ terms to the SMEFT operators and also give examples of specific underlying heavy physics that can generate such terms. Analysis of the SM signals and corresponding backgrounds shows that the di-lepton and tri-lepton channels are much better probes of the effective $t\bar{t} \ell^+ \ell^-$ 4-Fermi terms than the four-lepton one at the 13 TeV LHC. Therefore, the best sensitivity is obtained in the di- and tri-lepton channels, for which the dominant background $pp \to t \bar t$ and $pp \to WZ$, respectively, can be essentially eliminated after applying the $2\ell$ and $ 3 \ell$ selections and a sufficiently high invariant mass selection for the opposite sign same flavor (OSSF) lepton-pair. We explore two cases: lepton flavor universal (LFU) NP where the $t t e e$ and $t t μμ$ contact interactions are of same size and LFU violating (LFUV) NP, where the scale of the $t t μμ$ terms is assumed to be much lower. We show that in both cases it is possible to obtain new 95\% CL bounds on the scale of the $t t \ell \ell$ contact interactions at the level $Λ\gtrsim 2-3$ TeV, which are considerably tighter than the current bounds on these 4-Fermi terms.

Standard Model (SM) of particle physics has achieved enormous success in describing the interactions among the known fundamental constituents of nature, yet it fails to describe phenomena for which there is very strong experimental evidence, such as the existence of dark matter, and which point to the existence of new physics not included in that model; beyond its existence, experimental data, however, have not provided clear indications as to the nature of that new physics. The effective field theory (EFT) approach, the subject of this review, is designed for this type of situations; it provides a consistent and unbiased framework within which to study new physics effects whose existence is expected but whose detailed nature is known very imperfectly. We will provide a description of this approach together with a discussion of some of its basic theoretical aspects. We then consider applications to high-energy phenomenology and conclude with a discussion of the application of EFT techniques to the study of dark matter physics and it possible interactions with the SM. In several of the applications we also briefly discuss specific models that are ultraviolet complete and may realize the effects described by the EFT.

The associated production of a single-top with opposite-sign same-flavor (OSSF) di-leptons, $pp \to t \ell^+ \ell^-$ and $ pp \to t \ell^+ \ell^- + j$ ($j=$light jet), can lead to striking tri-lepton $pp \to \ell^\prime \ell^+ \ell^- + X$ and di-lepton $pp \to \ell^+ \ell^- + j_b + X$ ($j_b=b$-jet) events at the LHC, after the top decays. Although these rather generic multi-lepton signals are flavor-blind, they can be generated by new 4-Fermi flavor changing (FC) $u_i t \ell \ell$ scalar, vector and tensor interactions ($u_i \in u,c$), which we study in this paper; we match the FC $u_i t \ell \ell$ 4-Fermi terms to the SMEFT operators and also to different types of FC underlying heavy physics. The main backgrounds to these di- and tri-lepton signals arise from $t \bar t$, $Z$+jets and $VV$ ($V=W,Z$) production, but they can be essentially eliminated with a sufficiently high invariant mass selection on the OSSF di-leptons, $m_{\ell^+ \ell^-}^{\tt min}(OSSF) > 1$ TeV; the use of $b$-tagging as an additional selection in the di-lepton final state case also proves very useful. We find, for example, that the expected 95\% CL bounds on the scale of a tensor(vector) $u t μμ$ interaction, with the current $\sim 140$ fb$^{-1}$ of LHC data, are $Λ< 5(3.2) $ TeV or $Λ< 4.1(2.7)$ TeV, if analyzed via the di-muon $μ^+ μ^- + j_b$ signal or the $e μ^+ μ^-$ tri-lepton one, respectively. The expected reach at the HL-LHC with 3000 fb$^{-1}$ of data is $Λ< 7.1(4.7)$ TeV and $Λ< 2.4(1.5)$ TeV for the corresponding $u t μμ$ and $c t μμ$ operators. We also study the potential sensitivity at future 27 TeV and 100 TeV high-energy LHC successors and also discuss the possible implications of this class of FC 4-Fermi effective interactions on lepton non-universality tests at the LHC.

We investigate the viability of a simple dark matter (DM) model consisting of a single fermion in the context of galactic dynamics. We use a consistent approach that does not presume a particular DM density profile but instead requires that the DM+baryon system is in hydrostatic equilibrium. Using a phenomenological baryon density profile, the model then predicts the DM distribution with a core like behavior close to the galactic center. The presence of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the center of large galaxies arises naturally in this framework. Using data from a set of large elliptical and spiral galaxies, and from a small set of dwarf galaxies, we find that the model can explain most of the bulk galactic properties, as well as some of the features observed in the rotation curves, provided the DM mass is in the $\mathcal{O}$(50 eV) range. More precise tests of the model require better modeling of the baryon profile and better control on the uncertainties in the data.

We present a realistic, simple and natural model of strongly-interacting dark matter based on the neutrino-portal paradigm. The strong interactions at small velocities are generated by the exchange of dark photons, and produce the observed core-like DM distribution in galactic centers; this effect could be spoiled by the formation of DM bound states (also due to dark-photon effects), which we avoid by requiring the DM candidates to be light, with masses below O(10 GeV). The mixing of the dark photon with the Z and ordinary photon is strongly suppressed by introducing a softly-broken discrete symmetry similar to charge conjugation, which also ensures that the dark photon life-time is short enough to avoid restrictions derived form big-bang nucleosynthesis and large-scale structure formation. Other constraints are accommodated without the need of fine tuning, in particular nucleon scattering occurs only at one loop, so direct detection cross sections are naturally suppressed. Neutrino masses are generated through the inverse see saw.

We examine new aspects of leptoquark (LQ) phenomenology using effective field theory (EFT). We construct a complete set of leading effective operators involving SU(2) singlets scalar LQ and the SM fields up to dimension six. We show that, while the renormalizable LQ-lepton-quark interaction Lagrangian can address the persistent hints for physics beyond the Standard Model in the B-decays $\bar B \to D^{(*)} τ\barν$, $\bar B \to \bar K \ell^+ \ell^-$ and in the measured anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, the LQ higher dimensional effective operators may lead to new interesting effects associated with lepton number violation. These include the generation of one-loop sub-eV Majorana neutrino masses, mediation of neutrinoless double-$β$ decay and novel LQ collider signals. For the latter, we focus on 3rd generation LQ ($φ_3$) in a framework with an approximate $Z_3$ generation symmetry, and show that one class of the dimension five LQ operators may give rise to a striking asymmetric same-charge $φ_3 φ_3$ pair-production signal, which leads to low background same-sign leptons signals at the LHC. For example, with $M_{φ_3} \sim 1$ TeV and a new physics scale of $Λ\sim 5$ TeV, we expect about $5000$ positively charged $τ^+ τ^+$ events via $pp \to φ_3 φ_3 \to τ^+ τ^+ + 2 \cdot j_b$ ($j_b$=b-jet) at the 13 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb$^{-1}$. It is interesting to note that, in the LQ EFT framework, the expected same-sign lepton signals have a rate which is several times larger than the QCD LQ-mediated opposite-sign leptons signals, $gg,q \bar q \to φ_3 φ_3^* \to \ell^+ \ell^- +X$. We also consider the same-sign charged lepton signals in the LQ EFT framework at higher energy hadron colliders such as a 27 TeV HE-LHC and a 100 TeV FCC-hh.

We propose a strongly coupled supersymmetric gauge theory that can accommodate both the inflation (in the form of generalized hybrid inflation) and dark matter (DM). In this set-up, we identify the DM as the Goldstones associated with the breaking of a global symmetry ($SU(4)\times SU(4) \to SU(4)$) after inflation ends. Due to the non-abelian nature of this symmetry, the scenario provides with multiple DMs. We then construct a low energy theory which generates a Higgs portal like coupling of the DMs with Standard Model (SM), thus allowing them to thermally freeze out. While the scales involved in the inflation either have a dynamical origin or related to UV interpretation in terms of a heavy quark field in the supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) sector, the DM masses however are generated from explicit breaking of the chiral symmetry of the SQCD sector. We discuss DM phenomenology for both degenerate and non-degenerate cases, poised with DM-DM interactions and find allowed region of parameter space in terms of relic density and direct search constraints.

We discuss a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM) that provides an explicit realization of the dark-matter (DM) neutrino-portal paradigm. The dark sector is composed of a scalar $ Φ$ and a Dirac fermion $ Ψ$, with the latter assumed to be lighter than the former. These particles interact with the SM through the exchange of a set of heavy Dirac fermion mediators that are neutral under all local SM symmetries, and also under the dark-sector symmetry that stabilizes the $ Ψ$ against decay. We show that this model can accommodate all experimental and observational constraints provided the DM mass is below $\sim 35\, \gev $ or is in a resonant region of the Higgs or $Z$ boson. We also show that if the dark scalar and dark fermion are almost degenerate in mass, heavier DM fermions are not excluded. We note that in this scenario DM annihilation in the cores of astrophysical objects and the galactic halo produces a monochromatic neutrino beam of energy $ \mfe $, which provides a clear signature for this paradigm. Other experimental signatures are also discussed.

In this article we discuss a general effective-theory description of a multi-component dark sector with an unspecified non-trivial symmetry and its interactions with the Standard Model generated by the exchange of heavy mediators. We then categorize the relevant effective operators given the current experimental sensistivity where the underlying theory is weakly coupled and renormalizable, with neutral mediators: either scalars or fermions. An interesting scenario resulting from this categorization is the neutrino portal, where only fermion mediators are present, and where the dark sector consists of fermions and scalars such that the lightest dark particle is a fermion, this scenario is characterized by having naturally suppressed couplings of the DM to all SM particles except the neutrinos and has received little attention in the literature. We find that there is a wide region in parameter space allowed by the current experimental constraints (relic abundance, direct and indirect detection limits); the cleanest signature of this paradigm is the presence of monochromatic neutrino lines with energy equal to that of the DM mass, but experimental sensitivity would have to be improved significantly before this can be probed.

Within this scenario, we obtain all the gauge-invariant dimension-seven effective operators, and determine whether each of the operators can be generated at tree-level by the heavy physics, or whether it is necessarily loop generated. We then use the tree-generated operators, including those containing right-handed neutrinos, to put limits on the scale of new physics $ Λ$ using low-energy measurements. We also study the production of same-sign dileptons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and determine the constraints on the heavy physics that can be derived form existing data, as well as the reach in probing $ Λ$ expected from future runs of this collider.

Assuming the presence of physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) with a characteristic scale M ~ O(10) TeV, we investigate the naturalness of the Higgs sector at scales below M using an effective field theory (EFT) approach. We obtain the leading 1-loop EFT contributions to the Higgs mass with a Wilsonian-like hard cutoff, and determine the constraints on the corresponding operator coefficients for these effects to alleviate the little hierarchy problem up to the scale of the effective action Λ< M, a condition we denote by "EFT-naturalness". We also determine the types of physics that can lead to EFT-naturalness and show that these types of new physics are best probed in vector-boson and multiple-Higgs production. The current experimental constraints on these coefficients are also discussed.

We study an extension of the Standard Model (SM) with two interacting cold Dark Matter (DM) candidates: a neutral Majorana fermion ($ν$) and a neutral scalar singlet ($\varphi$). The scalar $\varphi$ interacts with the SM through the "Higgs portal" coupling while $ν$ at the tree level interacts only with $\varphi$ through Yukawa interactions. The relic abundance of $ν$ and $\varphi$ is found by solving the Boltzmann equations numerically; for the case $m_ν> m_\varphi$ we also derive a reliable approximate analytical solution. Effects of the interaction between the two DM components are discussed. A scan over the parameter space is performed to determine the regions consistent with the WMAP data for DM relic abundance, and with the XENON100 direct detection limits for the DM-nucleus cross section. We find that although a large region of the parameter space is allowed by the WMAP constraints, the XENON100 data severely restricts the parameter space. Taking into account only amplitudes generated at the tree level one finds three allowed regions for the scalar mass: $m_\varphi \sim 62.5$ GeV (corresponding to the vicinity of the Higgs boson resonance responsible for $\varphi\varphi$ annihilation into SM particles), $m_\varphi \simeq 130-140$ GeV and $m_\varphi \gesim 3 $TeV. 1-loop induced $ν$-nucleon scattering has been also calculated and discussed. A possibility of DM direct detection by the CREST-II experiment was considered.

The implications for Higgs decays of potential new physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) are considered in the context of effective field theory, assuming perturbative decoupling. Using existing data to restrict which dimension-six operators can arise, it is shown that, given the existing experimental constraints, only a small number of operators can affect the decays of the Higgs: those that may be potentially-tree-generated (PTG) and modify the Higgs-fermion couplings, or those that may be loop-generated (LG) that modify the Higgs couplings to photon-photon, Z-photon and gluon-gluon. Implications for specific branching ratios are given in terms of the coefficients of various dimension six operators. In such a scenario, the ratios Width(H -> WW*)/Width(H -> ZZ*) and Width(H -> W l nu)/Width(H -> Z l l) equal to their standard model values to an accuracy of O(1%) or less.

We study a phenomenological model where the lightest dark matter (DM) particles are the pseudo-Goldstone excitations associated with a spontaneously broken symmetry, and transforming linearly with respect to an unbroken group H. For definiteness we take H = SU(N) and assume the Goldstone particles are bosons; in parallel with QCD, we refer to these particles as dark-matter pions. This scenario is in contrast to the common assumption that DM fields transform linearly under the full symmetry of the model. We illustrate the formalism by treating in detail the case of H = SU(2), in particular we calculate all the interactions relevant for the Boltzmann equations, which we solve numerically; we also derive approximate analytic solutions and show their consistency with the numerical results. We then compare the results with the constraints derived from the cold DM and direct detection experiments and derive the corresponding restrictions on the model parameters.

With reference to the equivalence theorem, we discuss the selection of basis operators for effective field theories in general. The equivalence relation can be used to partition operators into equivalence classes, from which inequivalent basis operators are selected. These classes can also be identified as containing Potential-Tree-Generated (PTG) operators, Loop-Generated (LG) operators, or both, independently of the specific dynamics of the underlying extended models, so long as it is perturbatively decoupling. For an equivalence class containing both, we argue that the basis operator should be chosen from among the PTG operators, because they may have the largest coefficients. We apply this classification scheme to dimension-six operators in an illustrative Yukawa model as well in the Standard Model (SM). We show that the basis chosen by Grzadkowski {\it et. al.} \cite{Grzadkowski:2010es} for the SM satisfies this criterion. In this light, we also revisit and verify our earlier result \cite{Arzt:1994gp} that the dimension-six corrections to the triple-gauge-boson couplings only arise from LG operators, so the magnitude of the coefficients should only be a few parts per thousand of the SM gauge coupling if BSM dynamics respects decoupling. The same is true of the quartic-gauge-boson couplings.

If the only contribution to neutrinoless double beta decay (NLDBD) are neutrino masses its discovery may be very difficult, especially if neutrinos present a normal hierarchy spectrum. However, this is not the only possibility; NLDBD can in general produce electrons of either chirality, in contrast with the neutrino induced NLDBD which predicts two left-handed electrons. Using an effective Lagrangian approach we classify the lepton number violating (LNV) effective operators with two leptons of either chirality but no quarks, ordered according to the magnitude of their contribution to NLDBD. We point out that, for each of the three chirality assignments, $e_{L}e_{L},e_{L}e_{R}$ and $e_{R}e_{R}$, there is only one LNV operator of the corresponding type to lowest order, and these have dimensions 5, 7 and 9, respectively. Neutrino masses are always induced by these extra operators but can be delayed to one (dimension 7) or two loops (dimension 9). Under the assumption that NLDBD is dominated by the operators of dimension 7 or 9 we find that the scale of new physics should be relatively low ($\lesssim 30$ TeV). We also list the SM additions generating these operators upon integration of the heavy modes, and discuss simple realistic examples of renormalizable theories for each case. The phenomenology of a model giving rise to the dimension 9 operator has been analyzed with some detail: if NLDBD is going to be seen in the next round of experiments, the doubly charged scalars of the model could be seen at the LHC and lepton flavour violating (LFV) rates could be at the reach of foreseen experiments. Moreover neutrino masses, which arise at two loops, display a very particular structure and are strongly constrained, in fact, $\sin^{2}θ_{13}\gtrsim0.008$, when $μ\rightarrow eee$ is required to lie below its present experimental limit.

Nonetheless, the analysis of events containing four charged leptons (including scalar decays into one or two taus as well as into W bosons) makes it possible to determine whether the doubly-charged excitation belongs to a multiplet with weak isospin T = 0, 1/2, 1, 3/2 or 2 (assuming there are no excitations with charge > 2); though discriminating between the isosinglet and isodoublet cases is possible only if charged-current events cannot produce the doubly-charged isosinglet.

The minimal Standard Model extension with the Weinberg operator does accommodate the observed neutrino masses and mixing, but predicts a neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay rate proportional to the effective electron neutrino mass, which can be then arbitrarily small within present experimental limits. However, in general $0νββ$ decay can have an independent origin and be near its present experimental bound; whereas neutrino masses are generated radiatively, contributing negligibly to $0νββ$ decay. We provide a realization of this scenario in a simple, well defined and testable model, with potential LHC effects and calculable neutrino masses, whose two-loop expression we derive exactly. We also discuss the connection of this model to others that have appeared in the literature, and remark on the significant differences that result from various choices of quantum number assignments and symmetry assumptions. In this type of models lepton flavor violating rates are also preferred to be relatively large, at the reach of foreseen experiments. Interestingly enough, in our model this stands for a large third mixing angle, $\sin^2θ_{13} \gtrsim 0.008$, when $μ\rightarrow eee$ is required to lie below its present experimental limit.

This could be as large as ~10% if the size of the new interactions saturates the present limits from electroweak precision data, what is not excluded by the oscillation experiments performed up to now. A simple model realizing such a scenario can be obtained adding right-handed neutrinos to the minimal Standard Model, together with an extra scalar doublet and a triplet of hypercharge 1. In this case, however, the possible deficit is reduced by a factor of ~3, and the Yukawa couplings must be adequately chosen. Masses of the scalars should be in the 1-3 TeV range, while the lowest cutoff of the (unspecified) UV completion of the model must be ~> 5 TeV, depending on the Higgs boson mass and the number of singlets present. The scalars couple to the Majorana mass term for right-handed neutrinos implying one massless neutrino. The resulting mixing angles are consistent with the tri-bimaximal mixing scenario.

Abstract:
The asymmetric Higgs sector of one $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ bidoublet $(φ_1^0,φ_1^-;φ_2^+,φ_2^0)$ and one $SU(2)_R$ doublet [but no $SU(2)_L$ doublet] is considered in a nonsupersymmetric left-right extension of the standard model (SM) of particle interactions. The inverse seesaw mechanism for neutrino mass is naturally implemented with the addition of fermion singlets, allowing thereby the possibility of breaking $SU(2)_R$ at the TeV scale. In the limit $v_2 = < φ_2^0 > = 0$, the unavoidable flavor-changing neutral Higgs couplings to quarks are studied and shown to be naturally suppressed in $K-\bar{K}$ and $B-\bar{B}$ mixing, as well as in $b \to s γ$. All particles are consistent with having masses less than 1 TeV, and could be observable at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Abstract:
We discuss the phenomenology of the most general effective Lagrangian, up to operators of dimension 5, build with standard model fields and interactions including right-handed neutrinos. In particular we find there is a dimension 5 electroweak moment operator of right-handed neutrinos, not discussed previously in the literature, which could have interesting phenomenological consequences.

The existence of the singlets also leads to realistic and surprisingly reach neutrino physics. The resulting light neutrino mass spectrum and mixing angles are consistent with the constraints from the neutrino oscillations.

We discuss cosmological consequences of the existence of physics beyond the standard model that exhibits Banks-Zaks and unparticle behavior in the UV and IR respectively. We first derive the equation of state for unparticles and use it to obtain the temperature dependence of the corresponding energy and entropy densities. We then formulate the Boltzmann and Kubo equations for both the unparticles and the Banks-Zaks particles, and use these results to determine the equilibrium conditions between the standard model and the new physics. We conclude by obtaining the constraints on the effective number of degrees of freedom of unparticles imposed by Big-Bang nucleosynthesis.
