We investigate a fundamental question regarding a benchmark class of shapes in one of the simplest, yet most widely utilized abstract models of algorithmic tile self-assembly. Specifically, we study the directed tile complexity of a $k \times N$ thin rectangle in Winfree's abstract Tile Assembly Model, assuming that cooperative binding cannot be enforced (temperature-1 self-assembly) and that tiles are allowed to be placed at most one step into the third dimension (just-barely 3D). While the directed tile complexities of a square and a scaled-up version of any algorithmically specified shape at temperature 1 in just-barely 3D are both asymptotically the same as they are (respectively) at temperature 2 in 2D, the bounds on the directed tile complexity of a thin rectangle at temperature 2 in 2D are not known to hold at temperature 1 in just-barely 3D. Motivated by this discrepancy, we establish new lower and upper bounds on the directed tile complexity of a thin rectangle at temperature 1 in just-barely 3D. We develop a new, more powerful type of Window Movie Lemma that lets us upper bound the number of "sufficiently similar" ways to assign glues to a set of fixed locations. Consequently, our lower bound, $Ω\left(N^{\frac{1}{k}}\right)$, is an asymptotic improvement over the previous best lower bound and is more aesthetically pleasing since it eliminates the $k$ that used to divide $N^{\frac{1}{k}}$. The proof of our upper bound is based on a just-barely 3D, temperature-1 counter, organized according to "digit regions", which affords it roughly fifty percent more digits for the same target rectangle compared to the previous best counter. This increase in digit density results in an upper bound of $O\left(N^{\frac{1}{\left\lfloor\frac{k}{2}\right\rfloor}}+\log N\right)$, that is an asymptotic improvement over the previous best upper bound and roughly the square of our lower bound.

Single crystals of a ternary relaxor ferroelectric system, 0.29Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-0.45Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.26PbTiO3, have been studied using triple-axis based elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. Elastic diffuse scattering confirms the presence of polar nano-regions (PNRs) in this system. The PNRs emerge at the Burns temperature, TB = 630 K and then grow continuously in population and correlation size as the crystal cools down to 100 K. At 300 K, characteristic 'butterfly' and ellipsoid shaped diffuse scattering patterns are observed on the HK0 reciprocal space plane. Electrical poling along the [110] direction produces a marked asymmetry in the diffuse scattering patterns, with the parallel-to-the-field components enhanced while the perpendicular-to-the-field components suppressed. Several low energy phonon branches along the [001] and [111] directions were studied. Most significantly, the PNR-acoustic phonon coupling is confirmed for the [110] transverse acoustic (TA) phonons polarized along the [1-10] real space direction and the [100] TA phonons. This coupling appears to be anisotropic and correlated with the distribution of PNRs, and also affected by the relative length scales of the PNRs and phonon wave vectors. The well-known 'waterfall' phenomenon is observed on the [001] and [110] transverse optical (TO) branches, near the zone center. The optical phonon measurements also reveal a lowest-energy, zone center soft TO mode, whose squared phonon energy increase linearly with decreasing temperature below the TB.

We propose that systems exhibiting compositional patterning at the nanoscale, so far assumed to be due to some kind of ordered phase segregation, can be understood instead in terms of coherent, single phase ordering of minority motifs, caused by some constrained drive for uniformity. The essential features of this type of arrangements can be reproduced using a superspace construction typical of uniformity-driven orderings, which only requires the knowledge of the modulation vectors observed in the diffraction patterns. The idea is discussed in terms of a simple two dimensional lattice-gas model that simulates a binary system in which the dilution of the minority component is favored. This simple model already exhibits a hierarchy of arrangements similar to the experimentally observed nano-chessboard and nano-diamond patterns, which are described as occupational modulated structures with two independent modulation wave vectors and simple step-like occupation modulation functions.
