We investigate the influence of crystallographic twins on the elastoplastic response of $γ$-TiAl intermetallics via full-field FFT-based computations. We first introduce a hierarchical stochastic model, which is used to simulate synthetic polycrystalline microstructures containing twin grains with certain morphologies, and apply it to generate representative volume elements. Second, we develop a Fourier-based method with regularization for solving the effective and local mechanical response of polycrystalline media using the Méric-Cailletaud crystal plasticity constitutive law. Numerical results show that, across configurations of twinning, the corresponding average effective response is similar. Although differences were quantified, the effect of twins on the yield stress is negligible in practice (less than $1\%$).

A stochastic 3D microstructure model for polycrystals is introduced which incorporates two types of twin grains, namely neighboring and inclusion twins. They mimic the presence of crystal twins in $γ$-TiAl polycrystalline microstructures as observed by 3D imaging techniques. The polycrystal grain morphology is modeled by means of Voronoi and -- more generally -- Laguerre tessellations. The crystallographic orientation of each grain is either sampled uniformly on the space of orientations or chosen to be in a twinning relation with another grain. The model is used to quantitatively study relationships between morphology and mechanical properties of polycrystalline materials. For this purpose, full-field Fourier-based computations are performed to investigate the combined effect of grain morphology and twinning on the overall elastic response. For $γ$-TiAl polycrystallines, the presence of twins is associated with a softer response compared to polycrystalline aggregates without twins. However, when comparing the influence on the elastic response, a statistically different polycrystalline morphology has a much smaller effect than the presence of twin grains. Notably, the bulk modulus is almost insensitive to the grain morphology and exhibits much less sensitivity to the presence of twins compared to the shear modulus. The numerical results are consistent with a two-scale homogenization estimate that utilizes laminate materials to model the interactions of twins.

The properties of porous glasses and their field of application strongly depend on the characteristics of the void space. Understanding the relationship between their porous structure and failure behaviour can contribute to the development of porous glasses with long-term reliability optimized for specific applications. In the present work, we used X-ray computed tomography with nanometric resolution (nano-CT) to image a controlled pore glass (CPG) with 400 nm-sized pores whilst undergoing uniaxial compression in-situ to emulate a stress process. Our results show that in-situ nano-CT provides an ideal platform for identifying the mechanisms of damage within glass with pores of 400 nm, as it allowed the tracking of the pores and struts change of shape during compression until specimen failure. We have also applied computational tools to quantify the microstructural changes within the CPG sample by map** the displacements and strain fields, and to numerically simulate the behaviour of the CPG using a Fast Fourier Transform/phase-field method. Both experimental and numerical data show local shear deformation, organized along bands, consistent with the appearance and propagation of +/- 45 degrees cracks.

The new operator is derived by expressing continuum mechanics in terms of centered differences on a rotated grid. Use of the modified Green operator leads, in all systems investigated, to more accurate strain and stress fields than using the discretizations proposed by Moulinec and Suquet (1994) or Willot and Pellegrini (2008). Moreover, we compared the convergence rates of the "direct" and "accelerated" FFT schemes with the different discretizations. The discretization method proposed in this work allows for much faster FFT schemes with respect to two criteria: stress equilibrium and effective elastic moduli.

A modified Green operator is proposed as an improvement of Fourier-based numerical schemes commonly used for computing the electrical or thermal response of heterogeneous media. Contrary to other methods, the number of iterations necessary to achieve convergence tends to a finite value when the contrast of properties between the phases becomes infinite. Furthermore, it is shown that the method produces much more accurate local fields inside highly-conducting and quasi-insulating phases, as well as in the vicinity of the phases interfaces. These good properties stem from the discretization of Green's function, which is consistent with the pixel grid while retaining the local nature of the operator that acts on the polarization field. Finally, a fast implementation of the "direct scheme" of Moulinec et al. (1994) that allows for parcimonious memory use is proposed.

Effects of two-body dipolar interactions on the effective permittivity/conductivity of a binary, symmetric, random dielectric composite are investigated in a self-consistent framework. By arbitrarily splitting the singularity of the Green tensor of the electric field, we introduce an additional degree of freedom into the problem, in the form of an unknown "inner" depolarization constant. Two coupled self-consistent equations determine the latter and the permittivity in terms of the dielectric contrast and the volume fractions. One of them generalizes the usual Coherent Potential condition to many-body interactions between single-phase clusters of polarizable matter elements, while the other one determines the effective medium in which clusters are embedded. The latter is in general different from the overall permittivity. The proposed approach allows for many-body corrections to the Bruggeman-Landauer (BL) scheme to be handled in a multiple-scattering framework. Four parameters are used to adjust the degree of self-consistency and to characterize clusters in a schematic geometrical way. Given these parameters, the resulting theory is "exact" to second order in the volume fractions. For suitable parameter values, reasonable to excellent agreement is found between theory and simulations of random-resistor networks and pixelwise-disordered arrays in two and tree dimensions, over the whole range of volume fractions. Comparisons with simulation data are made using an "effective" scalar depolarization constant that constitutes a very sensitive indicator of deviations from the BL theory.

This paper presents a combined numerical-theoretical study of the macroscopic behavior and local field distributions in a special class of two-dimensional periodic composites with viscoplastic phases. The emphasis is on strongly nonlinear materials containing pores or rigid inclusions. Full-field numerical simulations are carried out using a Fast-Fourier Transform algorithm [H. Moulinec, P. Suquet, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris II 318, 1417 (1994)], while the theoretical results are obtained by means of the `second-order' nonlinear homogenization method [P. Ponte Castaneda, J. Mech. Phys. Solids 50, 737 (2002)]. The effect of nonlinearity and inclusion concentration is investigated in the context of power-law (with strain-rate sensitivity m) behavior for the matrix phase under in-plane shear loadings. Overall, the `second-order' estimates are found to be in good agreement with the numerical simulations, with the best agreement for the rigidly reinforced materials. For the porous systems, as the nonlinearity increases (m decreases), the strain field is found to localize along shear bands passing through the voids (the strain fluctuations becoming unbounded) and the effective stress exhibits a singular behavior in the dilute limit. More specifically, for small porosities and fixed nonlinearity m>0, the effective stress decreases linearly with increasing porosity. However, for ideally plastic behavior (m = 0), the dependence on porosity becomes non-analytic. On the other hand, for rigidly-reinforced composites, the strain field adopts a tile pattern with bounded strain fluctuations, and no singular behavior is observed (to leading order) in the dilute limit.

The overall behavior of a 2D lattice of voids embedded in an anisotropic matrix is investigated in the limit of vanishing porosity f. An effective-medium model (of the Hashin-Shtrikman type) which accounts for elastic interactions between neighboring voids, is compared to Fast Fourier Transform numerical solutions and, in the limits of infinite anisotropy, to exact results. A cross-over between regular and singular dilute regimes is found, driven by a characteristic length which depends on f and on the anisotropy strength. The singular regime, where the leading dilute correction to the elastic moduli is an O(f^{1/2}), is related to strain localization and to change in character - from elliptic to hyperbolic - of the governing equations.

Stress and strain fields in a two-dimensional pixelwise disordered system are computed by a Fast Fourier Transform method. The system, a model for a ductile damaged medium, consists of an elastic-perfectly matrix containing void pixels. Its behavior is investigated under equibiaxial or shear loading. We monitor the evolution with loading of plastically deformed zones, and we exhibit a nucleation / growth / coalescence scenario of the latter. Identification of plastic ``clusters'' is eased by using a discrete Green function implementing equilibrium and continuity at the level of one pixel. Observed morphological regimes are put into correspondence with some features of the macroscopic stress / strain curves.

Exact solutions are derived for the problem of a two-dimensional, infinitely anisotropic, linear-elastic medium containing a periodic lattice of voids. The matrix material possesses either one infinitely soft, or one infinitely hard loading direction, which induces localized (singular) field configurations. The effective elastic moduli are computed as functions of the porosity in each case. Their dilute expansions feature half-integer powers of the porosity, which can be correlated to the localized field patterns. Statistical characterizations of the fields, such as their first moments and their histograms are provided, with particular emphasis on the singularities of the latter. The behavior of the system near the void close packing fraction is also investigated. The results of this work shed light on corresponding results for strongly nonlinear porous media, which have been obtained recently by means of the ``second-order'' homogenization method, and where the dilute estimates also exhibit fractional powers of the porosity.
