The proton--proton elastic differential cross section at very small four momentum transfer squared has been measured at three different incident proton momenta in the range of 2.5 to 3.2 GeV/c by detecting the recoil proton at polar angles close to $90^\circ$. The measurement was performed at COSY with the KOALA detector covering the Coulomb-nuclear interference region. The total cross section $σ_\text{tot}$, which has been determined precisely, is consistent with previous measurements. The values of the slope parameter $B$ and the relative real amplitude ratio $ρ$ determined in this experiment alleviate the lack of data in the relevant energy region. This precise data on $ρ$ might be an important check for a new dispersion analysis.

New high precision total and differential cross sections are reported for the $dp\to {}^3\textrm{He}\,η$ reaction close to threshold. The measurements were performed using the magnetic spectrometer ANKE, which is an internal fixed target facility at the COSY cooler synchrotron. The data were taken for deuteron beam momenta between $3.14641~\textrm{GeV}/c$ and $3.20416~\textrm{GeV}/c$, which corresponds to the range in excess energy $Q$ for this reaction between $1.14~\textrm{MeV}$ and $15.01~\textrm{MeV}$. The normalization was established through the measurement in parallel of deuteron-proton elastic scattering and this was checked through the study of the $dp\to {}^3\textrm{He}\,π^0$ reaction. The previously indicated possible change of sign of the slope of the differential cross sections near the production threshold, which could be explained by a rapid variation of the $s$- and $p$-wave interference term, is not confirmed by the new data. The energy dependence of the total cross section and the $90^{\circ}$ slope parameter are well explained by describing the final state interaction in terms of a complex Jost function and the results are significant in the discussion of $η$-mesic nuclei. In combination with recently published WASA-at-COSY data [P. Adlarson $et\, al.$, Phys. Lett. B 782, 297 (2018)], a smooth variation of the slope parameter is achieved up to an excess energy of $80.9~\textrm{MeV}$.

It is shown that the ratio of the deuteron and proton analysing powers in proton-deuteron elastic scattering at small angles is sensitive to subtle effects in a theoretical description. These include the transverse spin-spin term in the elementary nucleon-nucleon amplitudes and double-scattering corrections. On the other hand there is far less sensitivity to the spin-orbit amplitude and to binding or other kinematic effects associated with the use of the deuteron, as either target or projectile. The available data are in agreement with the results of a refined Glauber theory model.

This project exploits charged particles confined as a storage ring beam (proton, deuteron, possibly $^3$He) to search for an intrinsic electric dipole moment (EDM, $\vec d$) aligned along the particle spin axis. Statistical sensitivities can approach $10^{-29}$~e$\cdot$cm. The challenge will be to reduce systematic errors to similar levels. The ring will be adjusted to preserve the spin polarization, initially parallel to the particle velocity, for times in excess of 15 minutes. Large radial electric fields, acting through the EDM, will rotate the polarization ($\vec d \times\vec E$). The slow rise in the vertical polarization component, detected through scattering from a target, signals the EDM. The project strategy is outlined. It foresees a step-wise plan, starting with ongoing COSY activities that demonstrate technical feasibility. Achievements to date include reduced polarization measurement errors, long horizontal-plane polarization lifetimes, and control of the polarization direction through feedback from the scattering measurements. The project continues with a proof-of-capability measurement (precursor experiment; first direct deuteron EDM measurement), an intermediate prototype ring (proof-of-principle; demonstrator for key technologies), and finally the high precision electric-field storage ring.

The data were taken at 796MeV and five higher energies from 1600MeV to 2400MeV. The analyzing power in pd elastic scattering was studied by detecting the low energy recoil deuteron in telescopes placed symmetrically in the COSY plane to the left and right of the beam whereas for pn quasi-elastic scattering a low energy proton was registered in one of the telescopes in coincidence with a fast scattered proton measured in the ANKE magnetic spectrometer. Though the experiment explores new domains, the results are consistent with the limited published information.

Since the only previous systematic measurements of single-pion production at these energies were made in collinear kinematics, the present work constitutes a significant extension of the current knowledge on this reaction. Even this far above the production threshold, significant changes are found in the behaviour of the angular distributions over small intervals in beam momentum.

The reaction $p + d \rightarrow p + d + X$ was studied at 0.8-2.0 GeV proton beam energies with the ANKE magnetic spectrometer at the COSY synchrotron storage ring. The proton-deuteron pairs emerging with high momenta, 0.6-1.8 GeV/$c$, were detected at small angles with respect to the proton beam. Distribution over the reaction missing mass $M_x$ reveals a local enhancement near the threshold of the pion pair production specific for the so-called ABC effect. The enhancement has a structure of a narrow bump placed above a smooth continuum. The invariant mass of the $dππ$ system in this enhancement region exhibits a resonance-like peak at $M_{dππ} \approx 2.36$ GeV/$c^2$ with the width $Γ\approx 0.10$ GeV/$c^2$. A possible interpretation of these features is discussed.

While significant structure of the total cross section is observed in the energy region $20\;\text{MeV}\lesssim Q_η\lesssim 60\;\text{MeV}$, a previously reported sharp variation around $Q_η\approx 50\;\text{MeV}$ cannot be confirmed. Angular distributions show the typical forward-peaking that was reported elsewhere. Though it is important to include effects associated with the p-wave nature of pion production, the data are insufficient to establish unambiguously the dependence on Q. The angular distributions show the presence of higher partial waves which seem to be anomalously large at small Q. The dispersion relation method to determine scattering lengths is extended to encompass cases where, as for the pp -> pi+ pn reaction, there is a bound state and, in a test example, it is shown that the values deduced for the low energy neutron-proton scattering parameters are significantly influenced by the pion p-wave behavior.

Whereas the ratio is in tolerable agreement with that found in a high resolution spectrometer experiment, the angular distribution in the final pn rest frame shows that the deviation from the predictions of final state interaction theory must originate primarily from higher partial waves in the pn system. These considerations might also be significant for the determination of the S-wave Lambda:p scattering length from data on the pp -> K+ Lambda p reaction.

We analyze the data on cross sections and asymmetries for the $pd (dp) \to η^3{\rm He}$ reaction close to threshold and look for bound states of the $η^3 {\rm He}$ system. Rather than parameterizing the scattering matrix, as is usually done, we develop a framework in which the $η^3 {\rm He}$ optical potential is the key ingredient, and its strength, together with some production parameters, are fitted to the available experimental data. The relationship of the scattering matrix to the optical potential is established using the Bethe-Salpeter equation and the $η^3 {\rm He}$ loop function incorporates the range of the interaction given by the empirical $^3 {\rm He}$ density. We find a local Breit Wigner form of the $η^3$He amplitude $T$ below threshold with a clear peak in $|T|^2$, which corresponds to an $η^3 {\rm He}$ binding of about 0.3 MeV and a width of about 3 MeV. By fitting the potential we can also evaluate the $η^3 {\rm He}$ scattering length, including its sign, thus resolving the ambiguity in the former analyses.

Values of the proton analysing power in the $pd\to{}^{3}\textrm{He}\,π^0/^{3}\textrm{H}\,π^+$ reactions at 350-360~MeV per nucleon were obtained by using a polarised proton beam incident on a deuterium cluster-jet target and with a polarised deuteron beam incident on a target cell filled with polarised hydrogen. These results have a much larger angular coverage than existing data. First measurements are also presented of the deuteron vector analysing power and the deuteron-proton spin correlations. Data were also obtained on the deuteron-proton spin correlation and proton analysing power at small angles at 600~MeV per nucleon, though the angular coverage at this energy was much more restricted even when using a deuteron beam. By combining the extrapolated values of the spin correlations to the forward or backward directions with published measurements of the deuteron tensor analysing powers, the relative phases between the two non-vanishing amplitudes were evaluated.

New experimental data on the pd -> 3He pi+ pi- reaction obtained with the COSY-MOMO detector below the three-pion threshold are presented. The reaction was also studied in inverse kinematics with a deuteron beam and the higher counting rates achieved were especially important at low excess energies. The comparison of these data with inclusive pd -> 3He+X rates allowed estimates also to be made of pi0 pi0 production. The results confirm our earlier findings that close to threshold there is no enhancement at low excitation energies in the pi+ pi- system, where the data seem largely suppressed compared to phase space. Possible explanations for this behavior, such as strong p- waves in the pi+pi- -system or the influence of two-step processes, are explored.

The Australian government, to remind job seekers of appointments with employment services providers in order to cut costs and free up human resources, is using technologies such as Short Messaging Services (SMS). However, the technologies in-use are but one side of this equation the specifics of how these technologies are used is the other side, and these specifics are highly under-theorized, particularly in regard to the views of the people to which these technologies are directed. The purpose of this paper is to provide a theoretical framing for this phenomenon as well as to introduce an emerging methodological direction that may allow for a better understanding of demographic-specific values and thereby better valence framing. The paper also theorizes reactions to information that could be applicable elsewhere, not just in e-government or with SMS, thereby contributing to discussions surrounding the Big Data debate.

Absolute normalisations of typically 3% were achieved by studying the energy losses of the circulating beam of the COSY storage ring as it passed repeatedly through the windowless hydrogen target of the ANKE magnetic spectrometer. It is shown that the data have a significant impact upon a partial wave analysis. After extrapolating the differential cross sections to the forward direction, the results are broadly compatible with the predictions of forward dispersion relations.

The K- momentum dependence of the differential cross section has been measured at small angles over the 0.2--0.9 GeV/c range. The comparison of the data with detailed model calculations indicates an attractive K- -nucleus potential of about -60 MeV at normal nuclear matter density at a mean momentum of 0.5 GeV/c. However, this approach has difficulty in reproducing the smallness of the observed cross sections at low K- momenta.

A new method to determine the spin tune is described and tested. In an ideal planar magnetic ring, the spin tune - defined as the number of spin precessions per turn - is given by $ν_s = γG$ (gamma is the Lorentz factor, $G$ the magnetic anomaly). For 970 MeV/c deuterons coherently precessing with a frequency of ~120 kHz in the Cooler Synchrotron COSY, the spin tune is deduced from the up-down asymmetry of deuteron carbon scattering. In a time interval of 2.6 s, the spin tune was determined with a precision of the order $10^{-8}$, and to $1 \cdot 10^{-10}$ for a continuous 100 s accelerator cycle. This renders the presented method a new precision tool for accelerator physics: controlling the spin motion of particles to high precision is mandatory, in particular, for the measurement of electric dipole moments of charged particles in a storage ring.

The charge exchange of vector polarised deuterons on a polarised hydrogen target has been studied in a high statistics experiment at the COSY-ANKE facility at a deuteron beam energy of Td = 726 MeV. By selecting two fast protons at low relative energy E_{pp}, the measured analysing powers and spin correlations are sensitive to interference terms between specific neutron-proton charge-exchange amplitudes at a neutron kinetic energy of Tn ~ 1/2 Td =363 MeV. An impulse approximation calculation, which takes into account corrections due to the angular distribution in the diproton, describes reasonably the dependence of the data on both E_{pp} and the momentum transfer. This lends broad support to the current neutron-proton partial-wave solution that was used in the estimation.

The production of $η$ and $η^{\prime}$ mesons in photon- and hadron-induced reactions on free and quasi-free nucleons and on nuclei is reviewed. The extensive database on $γN \to ηN$, for both proton and neutron targets, is described in detail and its implications for the search for $N^{\star}$ resonances much heavier than the dominant $S_{11}(1535)$ discussed. Though less is currently known about the production of the $η^{\prime}$ or of $ηπ$ pairs, these also offer tantalizing prospects in the search for the missing isobars. The more limited data available on pion-induced production are still necessary ingredients in the partial wave analysis discussed.
The production of the $η$-meson in $pp$ and $pn$ collisions shows once again the strong influence of the $S_{11}(1535)$ isobar, which is in contrast to the relatively weak behaviour seen near threshold for $η^{\prime}$ production. This difference is reflected in the important final state interaction effects of the $η$ in nuclei that may even lead to this meson being "bound" in some systems. The evidence for this is reviewed for both $γA$ and $p A$ collisions. The inclusive photoproduction of $η$, $η^{\prime}$, and $ηπ$ pairs from nuclei provides further information regarding the production mechanism and the interaction of the $η$ and $η^{\prime}$ with nuclei and the $ηπ$ pairs may even allow access to low mass $ηA$ systems that are forbidden in direct single-meson photoproduction.

The proton analysing power in $\vec{p}p$ elastic scattering has been measured at small angles at COSY-ANKE at 796 MeV and five other beam energies between 1.6 and 2.4 GeV using a polarised proton beam. The asymmetries obtained by detecting the fast proton in the ANKE forward detector or the slow recoil proton in a silicon tracking telescope are completely consistent. Although the analysing power results agree well with the many published data at 796 MeV, and also with the most recent partial wave solution at this energy, the ANKE data at the higher energies lie well above the predictions of this solution at small angles. An updated phase shift analysis that uses the ANKE results together with the World data leads to a much better description of these new measurements.

The vector and tensor analysing powers, $A_y$ and $A_{yy}$, of the $\vec{p}d \to n\{pp\}_{s}$ charge-exchange reaction have been measured at a beam energy of 600 MeV at the COSY-ANKE facility by using an unpolarised proton beam incident on an internal storage cell target filled with polarised deuterium gas. The low energy recoiling protons were measured in a pair of silicon tracking telescopes placed on either side of the target. Putting a cut of 3 MeV on the diproton excitation energy ensured that the two protons were dominantly in the $^{1}S_{0}$ state, here denoted by $\{pp\}_{s}$. The polarisation of the deuterium gas was established through measurements in parallel of proton-deuteron elastic scattering. By analysing events where both protons entered the same telescope, the charge-exchange reaction was measured for momentum transfers $q\geq 160$ MeV/$c$. These data provide a good continuation of the earlier results at $q\leq 140$ MeV/$c$ obtained with a polarised deuteron beam. They are also consistent with impulse approximation predictions with little sign evident for any modifications due to multiple scatterings.

Though the well-known ABC enhancement is observed in the π+π- spectrum, the differences detected between the π+3He and π-3He invariant-mass distributions show that there must be some isospin-one ππ production even at relatively low excess energies. The invariant-mass differences are modeled in terms of the sequential decay N*(1440) -> Delta(1232)π -> Nππ.

The charge-exchange break-up of polarised deuterons pol{d}p -> {pp}n, where the final {pp} diproton system has a very low excitation energy and hence is mainly in the 1S0 state, is a powerful tool to probe the spin-flip terms in the proton-neutron charge-exchange scattering. Recent measurements with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage ring at 1.6, 1.8, and 2.27 GeV have extended these studies into the pion-production regime in order to investigate the mechanism for the excitation of the Delta(1232) isobar in the pol{d}p -> {pp}X reaction. Values of the differential cross section and two deuteron tensor analysing powers, A_{xx} and A_{yy}, have been extracted in terms of the momentum transfer to the diproton or the invariant mass Mx of the unobserved system X. The unpolarised cross section in the high Mx region is well described in a model that includes only direct excitation of the Delta isobar through undistorted one pion exchange. However, the cross section is grossly underestimated for low Mx, even when Delta excitation in the projectile deuteron is included in the calculation. Furthermore, direct Delta production through one pion exchange only reproduces the angular dependence of the difference between the two tensor analysing powers.

The transverse spin correlations A_{x,x} and A_{y,y} have been measured in the pol{d} pol{p} -> p_spec {pp}_s pi- reaction at COSY-ANKE at 353 MeV per nucleon. Here {pp}_s denotes a proton-proton pair with low excitation energy, which is dominantly in the 1S0 state. By measuring three protons in the final state it was possible to extract events where there was a spectator proton p_spec so that the reaction could be interpreted in terms of quasi-free pol{n} pol{p} -> {pp}_s pi-. The proton analyzing power in this reaction was also deduced from this data set by averaging over the polarization of the deuteron beam. The values of A_y^p were shown to be consistent with a refined analysis of our earlier results obtained with a polarized proton incident on a deuterium target. Taking these data in combination with our earlier measurements of the differential cross sections and analyzing powers in the pol{p} p -> {pp}_s pi^0 reaction, a more robust partial wave decomposition was achieved. Three different acceptable solutions were found and the only way of resolving this ambiguity without further theoretical input would be through a measurement of the mixed spin-correlation parameter A_{x,z}.

The pp -> ppK+K- reaction was measured below the phi threshold at a beam energy of 2.568 GeV using the COSY-ANKE magnetic spectrometer. By assuming that the four-body phase space is distorted only by the product of two-body final state interactions, fits to a variety of one-dimensional distributions permit the evaluation of differential and total cross sections. The shapes of the distributions in the Kp and Kpp invariant masses are reproduced only if the K-p interaction is even stronger than that found at higher energy. The cusp effect in the K+K- distribution at the K0K0bar threshold is much more clear and some evidence is also found for coupling between the K-p and K0bar n channels. However, the energy dependence of the total cross section cannot be reproduced by considering only a simple product of such pair-wise final state interactions.

Some of the important results from the COSY-Juelich spin programme are summarised. These include the measurement of the deuteron beam momentum through the excitation of a depolarising resonance, which allowed the mass of the eta-meson to be determined to high precision. The charge exchange of polarised deuterons on hydrogen gave rise to a detailed study of the spin dependence of large angle neutron-proton elastic scattering amplitudes. The measurements of the cross section and analysing powers for pion production in both pp and pn collisions at 353 MeV could be described very successfully in terms of a partial wave decomposition.

The unpolarised differential cross section and the two deuteron tensor analysing powers A_{xx} and A_{yy} of the pol{d}p -> (pp)n charge-exchange reaction have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage ring. Using deuteron beams with energies 1.2, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.27 GeV, data were obtained for small momentum transfers to a (pp) system with low excitation energy. The results at the three lower energies are consistent with impulse approximation predictions based upon the current knowledge of the neutron-proton amplitudes. However, at 2.27GeV, where these amplitudes are far more uncertain, agreement requires a reduction in the overall double-spin-flip contribution, with an especially significant effect in the longitudinal direction. These conclusions are supported by measurements of the deuteron-proton spin-correlation parameters C_{x,x} and C_{y,y} that were carried out in the pol{d}pol{p} -> (pp)n reaction at 1.2 and 2.27GeV. The values obtained for the proton analysing power also suggest the need for a radical re-evaluation of the neutron-proton elastic scattering amplitudes at the higher energy. It is therefore clear that such measurements can provide a valuable addition to the neutron-proton database in the charge-exchange region.

A value for the mass of the eta meson has been determined at the COSY-ANKE facility through the measurement of a set of deuteron laboratory beam momenta and associated 3He center-of-mass momenta in the d+p -> 3He+X reaction. The eta was then identified by the missing-mass peak and the production threshold determined. The individual beam momenta were fixed with a relative precision of 3 x 10^-5 for values around 3 GeV/c by using a polarized deuteron beam and inducing an artificial depolarizing spin resonance, which occurs at a well-defined frequency. The final-state momenta in the two-body d+p -> 3He+eta reaction were investigated in detail by studying the size of the 3He momentum ellipse with the forward detection system of the ANKE spectrometer. Final alignment of the spectrometer for this high precision experiment was achieved through a comprehensive study of the 3He final-state momenta as a function of the center-of-mass angles, taking advantage of the full geometrical acceptance. The value obtained for the mass, m(eta)=(547.873 +- 0.005(stat) +- 0.027(syst)) MeV/c^2, is consistent and competitive with other recent measurements, in which the meson was detected through its decay products.

Detailed model descriptions fitted to a variety of one-dimensional distributions permit the separation of the pp -> pp phi cross section from that of non-phi production. The differential spectra show that higher partial waves represent the majority of the pp -> pp phi total cross section at an excess energy of 76 MeV, whose energy dependence would then seem to require some s-wave phi-p enhancement near threshold. The non-phi data can be described in terms of the combined effects of two-body final state interactions using the same effective scattering parameters determined from lower energy data.

For the first time, the momentum dependence of the nuclear transparency ratio, the in-medium phi width, and the differential cross section for phi meson production at forward angles have been determined for these targets over the momentum range of 0.6 - 1.6 GeV/c. There are indications of a significant momentum dependence in the value of the extracted phi width, which corresponds to an effective phi-N absorption cross section in the range of 14 - 21 mb.

By using a deuterium target we have obtained data on the differential cross section and analysing power of the quasi-free pol{p}n -> {pp}_s pi^- reaction at 353 MeV. The spectator proton p_sp was either measured directly in silicon tracking telescopes or reconstructed using the momentum of a detected pi^-. Both observables can be described in terms of s-, p-, and d-wave pion production amplitudes. Taken together with the analogous data on the pol{p}p -> {pp}_s pi^0 reaction, full partial wave decompositions of both processes were carried out.

In order to establish links between p-wave pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions and low energy three-nucleon scattering, an extensive programme of experiments on pion production is currently underway at COSY-ANKE. The final proton pair is detected at very low excitation energy, leading to an S-wave diproton, denoted here as {pp}_s. We now report on measurements of the differential cross section and analysing power of the pol{p}p->{pp}_s pi^0$ reaction at 353 MeV. Both observables can be described in terms of s- and d-wave pion production and, by using the phase information from elastic pp scattering, unique solutions can be obtained for the corresponding amplitudes. This information is vital for the partial wave decomposition of the corresponding pn->{pp}_s pi^- reaction and hence for the extraction of the p-wave terms.

The decay rate of such a hypothesised dibaryon into the {pn}_{I=0} pi0 pi0 channel is estimated in a weakly model-dependent way by using final state interaction theory. It is shown that, if the resonance exists, it should then show up as strongly in this channel as in d pi0 pi0. The sum of the two decay modes would saturate most of the inelasticity predicted in the relevant partial waves in the 2380 MeV/c^2 region.

The photon angular distribution in the center-of-mass system and those of the proton-proton relative momentum with respect to the beam direction and to that of the recoil photon were determined reliably up to a final pp excitation energy of Epp ~ 30 MeV. Except for very small Epp values, the behavior of these distributions with excitation energy is well reproduced by a new refined model of the hard bremsstrahlung process. The model reproduces absolutely the total cross section and its energy dependence to within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties.

It is assumed that both the $K^-p$ and $π^0Σ^0$ final states originate from the decay of the $Λ(1405)$ resonance which was formed in the production chain $pp\to p(N^*(1535)\to K^+Λ(1405))$. The available experimental data are well reproduced, especially the ratio of the two total cross sections, which is much less sensitive to the particular model of the entrance channel. The significant coupling of the $N^*(1535)$ resonance to $Λ(1405) K$ is further evidence for large $s \bar{s}$ components in the quark wave function of the $N^*(1535)$ resonance.

Comparison with deuteron photodisintegration shows that the cross section for diproton production is up to two orders of magnitude smaller, due largely to differences in the selection rules.

The production of the Sigma+ hyperon through the pp->K+nSigma+ reaction has been investigated at four energies close to threshold, 1.826, 1.920, 1.958, and 2.020 GeV. At low energies, correlated K+pi+ pairs can only originate from Sigma+ production so that their measurement allows the total cross section for the reaction to be determined. The results obtained are completely consistent with the values extracted from the study of the K+-proton correlation spectra obtained in the same experiment. These spectra, as well as the inclusive K+ momentum distributions, also provide conservative upper limits on the Sigma+ production rates. The measurements show a Sigma+ production cross section that varies roughly like phase space and, in particular, none of the three experimental approaches used supports the anomalously high near-threshold pp->K+ nSigma+ total cross section previously reported [T. Rozek et al., Phys. Lett. B 643, 251 (2006)].
