Innovative synthetic approaches can yield new phases containing novel structural and magnetic motifs. In this work, we show the synthesis and magnetic characterization of three new and one previously reported layered phase in the K-Cu-Te-O(H) phase space using a tunable hydroflux technique. The hydroflux, with a roughly equal molar ratio of water and alkali hydroxide, is a highly oxidizing, low melting solvent which can be used to isolate metastable phases unattainable through traditional solid state or flux techniques. The newly synthesized phases, K$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$TeO$_{6}$, K$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$TeO$_{6}$ $\cdot$ H$_{2}$O, and K$_{6}$Cu$_{9}$Te$_{4}$O$_{24}$ $\cdot$ 2 H$_{2}$O, contain Cu$^{2+}$ within CuO$_{4}$ square planar plaquettes and TeO$_{6}$ octahedra ordering to form structural honeycomb layers isolated by interlayer K$^{+}$ ions and H$_{2}$O molecules. We find the synthesized structures display varying tilt sequences of the CuO$_{4}$ plaquettes, leading to distinct Cu$^{2+}$ magnetic motifs on the structural honeycomb lattice and a range of effective magnetic dimensionalities. We find that K$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$TeO$_{6}$ $\cdot$ H$_{2}$O does not order and displays alternating chain Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (AFM) behavior, while K$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$TeO$_{6}$ and K$_{6}$Cu$_{9}$Te$_{4}$O$_{24}$ $\cdot$ 2 H$_{2}$O order antiferromagnetically (T$_{N}$ = 100 K and T$_{N}$ = 6.5 K respectively). The previously known phase, K$_{2}$CuTeO$_{4}$(OH)$_{2}$ $\cdot$ H$_{2}$O, we find contains structurally and magnetically one-dimensional CuO$_{4}$ plaquettes leading to uniform chain Heisenberg AFM behavior and shows no magnetic order down to T = 0.4 K. We discuss and highlight the usefulness of the hydroflux technique in novel syntheses and the interesting magnetic motifs that arise in these particular phases.

Multiphase compressible flows are often characterized by a broad range of space and time scales. Thus entailing large grids and small time steps, simulations of these flows on CPU-based clusters can thus take several wall-clock days. Offloading the compute kernels to GPUs appears attractive but is memory-bound for standard finite-volume and -difference methods, dam** speed-ups. Even when realized, faster GPU-based kernels lead to more intrusive communication and I/O times. We present a portable strategy for GPU acceleration of multiphase compressible flow solvers that addresses these challenges and obtains large speedups at scale. We use OpenACC for portable offloading of all compute kernels while maintaining low-level control when needed. An established Fortran preprocessor and metaprogramming tool, Fypp, enables otherwise hidden compile-time optimizations. This strategy exposes compile-time optimizations and high memory reuse while retaining readable, maintainable, and compact code. Remote direct memory access, realized via CUDA-aware MPI, reduces communication times. We implement this approach in the open-source solver MFC. Metaprogramming-based preprocessing results in an 8-times speedup of the most expensive kernels, 46% of peak FLOPs on NVIDIA GPUs, and high arithmetic intensity (about 10 FLOPs/byte). In representative simulations, a single A100 GPU is 300-times faster than an Intel Xeon CPU core, corresponding to a 9-times speedup for a single A100 compared to the entire CPU die. At the same time, near-ideal (97%) weak scaling is observed for at least 13824 GPUs on Summit. A strong scaling efficiency of 84% is retained for an 8-times increase in GPU count. Collective I/O, implemented via MPI3, helps ensure negligible contribution of data transfers. Large many-GPU simulations of compressible (solid-)liquid-gas flows demonstrate the practical utility of this strategy.

Decoherence in superconducting qubits has long been attributed to two level systems arising from the surfaces and interfaces present in real devices. A recent significant step in reducing decoherence was the replacement of superconducting niobium by superconducting tantalum, resulting in a tripling of transmon qubit lifetimes (T1). One of these surface variables, the identity, thickness, and quality of the native surface oxide, is thought to play a major role as tantalum only has one oxide whereas niobium has several. Here we report the development of a thermodynamic metric to rank materials based on their potential to form a well-defined, thin, surface oxide. We first compute this metric for known binary and ternary metal alloys using data available from Materials Project, and experimentally validate the strengths and limits of this metric through preparation and controlled oxidation of 8 known metal alloys. Then we train a convolutional neural network to predict the value of this metric from atomic composition and atomic properties. This allows us to compute the metric for materials that are not present in materials project, including a large selection of known superconductors, and, when combined with Tc, allow us to identify new candidate superconductors for quantum information science (QISE) applications. We test the oxidation resistance of a pair of these predictions experimentally. Our results are expected to lay the foundation for tailored and rapid selection of improved superconductors for QISE.

The discovery of novel materials drives industrial innovation, although the pace of discovery tends to be slow due to the infrequency of "Eureka!" moments. These moments are typically tangential to the original target of the experimental work: "accidental discoveries". Here we demonstrate the acceleration of intentional materials discovery - targeting material properties of interest while generalizing the search to a large materials space with machine learning (ML) methods. We demonstrate a closed-loop ML discovery process targeting novel superconducting materials, which have industrial applications ranging from quantum computing to sensors to power delivery. By closing the loop, i.e. by experimentally testing the results of the ML-generated superconductivity predictions and feeding data back into the ML model to refine, we demonstrate that success rates for superconductor discovery can be more than doubled. In four closed-loop cycles, we discovered a new superconductor in the Zr-In-Ni system, re-discovered five superconductors unknown in the training datasets, and identified two additional phase diagrams of interest for new superconducting materials. Our work demonstrates the critical role experimental feedback provides in ML-driven discovery, and provides definite evidence that such technologies can accelerate discovery even in the absence of knowledge of the underlying physics.

In order to explore this tunability, vanadium-doped (Fe$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$)$_{3}$Ga$_{4}$ has been synthesized and characterized. High-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement show that samples up to 20\% V-do** remain isostructural to Fe$_{3}$Ga$_{4}$ and display a linear increase in unit cell volume as do** is increased. Magnetic measurements reveal a suppression of the antiferromagnetic helical spin-density wave (SDW) with V-do**, revealed by changes in both the low-temperature ferromagnetic-antiferromagentic (FM-AFM) transition (T$_{1}$) and high-temperature AFM-FM transition (T$_{2}$). At 7.5\% V-do**, the metamagnetic behavior of the helical AFM SDW phase is no longer observed. These results offer an avenue to effective tuning of the magnetic order in Fe$_{3}$Ga$_{4}$ for devices, as well as increased understanding of the magnetism in this system.

The effects of post-synthesis annealing temperature on arc-melted samples of Fe$_{3}$Ga$_{4}$ has been studied to investigate changes in crystallographic and magnetic properties induced by annealing. Results show a significant trend in the evolution of the (incommensurate spin density wave) ISDW-FM (ferromagnetic) transition temperature as a function of the refined unit cell volume in annealed samples. Strikingly, this trend allowed for the tuning of the transition temperature down to room-temperature (300 K) whilst maintaining a sharp transition in temperature, opening the door to the use of Fe$_{3}$Ga$_{4}$ in functional devices. Crystallographic analysis through Rietveld refinement of high-resolution x-ray diffraction data has showed that arc-melted stoichiometric Fe$_{3}$Ga$_{4}$ is multi-phase regardless of annealing temperature with a minor phase of FeGa$_{3}$ decreasing in phase fraction at higher annealing temperature. In order to validate the trend in ISDW-FM transition temperature with regard to unit cell volume, high pressure magnetometry was performed. This showed that the FM-ISDW ($\sim$ 68 K) and ISDW-FM ($\sim$ 360 K) transition temperatures could be tuned, increased and decreased respectively, linearly with external pressure. Thus, external pressure and the ensuing crystallographic changes minimize the temperature range of the stability of the ISDW pointing toward the importance of structural properties on the mechanism for the formation of the intermediate ISDW phase. These results show how this model system can be tuned as well as highlighting the need for future high-pressure crystallography and related single crystal measurements to understand the mechanism and nature of the intermediate ISDW phase to be exploited in future devices.

We present a method for producing high quality KCo2As2 crystals, stable in air and suitable for a variety of measurements. X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electrical transport and heat capacity measurements confirm the high quality and an absence of long range magnetic order down to at least 2 K. Residual resistivity values approaching 0.25 $μΩ$~cm are representative of the high quality and low impurity content, and a Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ = 7.3 mJ/mol K$^2$ signifies weaker correlations than the Fe-based counterparts. Together with Hall effect measurements, angle-resolved photoemission experiments reveal a Fermi surface consisting of electron pockets at the center and corner of the Brillouin zone, in line with theoretical predictions and in contrast to the mixed carrier types of other pnictides with the ThCr2Si2 structure. A large, linear magnetoresistance of 200\% at 14~T, together with an observed linear and hyperbolic, rather than parabolic, band dispersions are unusual characteristics of this metallic compound and may indicate more complex underlying behavior.

The helimagnet FeP is part of a family of binary pnictide materials with the MnP-type structure which share a nonsymmorphic crystal symmetry that preserves generic band structure characteristics through changes in elemental composition. It shows many similarities, including in its magnetic order, to isostructural CrAs and MnP, two compounds that are driven to superconductivity under applied pressure. Here we present a series of high magnetic field experiments on high quality single crystals of FeP, showing that the resistance not only increases without saturation by up to several hundred times its zero field value by 35 T, but that it also exhibits an anomalously linear field dependence over the entire field range when the field is aligned precisely along the crystallographic c-axis. A close comparison of quantum oscillation frequencies to electronic structure calculations links this orientation to a semi-Dirac point in the band structure which disperses linearly in a single direction in the plane perpendicular to field, a symmetry-protected feature of this entire material family. We show that the two striking features of MR-large amplitude and linear field dependence-arise separately in this system, with the latter likely due to a combination of ordered magnetism and topological band structure.

Here, we use a chemical design strategy to manipulate the do** level of transition metals in the LiOH layer to tune the magnetic properties of the (Li$_{1-x-y}$Fe$_{x}$Mn$_{y}$OD)FeSe system. We find Mn do** exclusively replaces Li in the hydroxide layer resulting in enhanced magnetization in the (Li$_{0.876}$Fe$_{0.062}$Mn$_{0.062}$OD)FeSe superconductor without significantly altering the superconducting behavior as resolved by magnetic susceptibility and electrical/thermal transport measurements. As a result, long-range magnetic ordering was observed below 12 K with neutron diffraction measurements. This work has implications for the design of magnetic superconductors for the fundamental understanding of superconductivity and magnetism in the iron chalcogenide system as well as exploitation as functional materials for next generation devices.

Recently synthesized metastable tetragonal CoSe, isostructural to the FeSe superconductor, offers a new avenue for investigating systems in close proximity to the iron-based superconductors. We present magnetic and transport property measurements on powders and single crystals of CoSe. High field magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a suppression of the previously reported 10 K ferromagnetic transition with the magnetic susceptibility exhibiting time-dependence below the proposed transition. Dynamic scaling analysis of the time-dependence yields a critical relaxation time of $τ^{*} = 0.064 \pm 0.008 $ s which in turn yields an activation energy of $E_{a}^{*}$ = 14.84 $\pm$ 0.59 K and an ideal glass temperature $T_{0}^{*}$ = 8.91 $\pm$ 0.09 K from Vogel-Fulcher analysis. No transition is observed in resistivity and specific heat measurements, but both measurements indicate that CoSe is metallic. These results are interpreted on the basis of CoSe exhibiting frustrated magnetic ordering arising from competing magnetic interactions. Arrott analysis of single crystal magnetic susceptibility has indicated that the magnetic moments lie in the $ab$-plane so frustration may arise from intralayer magnetic fluctuations as well as interlayer coupling. The results have implications for understanding the superconductivity in the iron chalcogenide systems as well as utilizing CoSe as a host for chemical and physical manipulation to tune and explore emergent phenomena within an expanding new class of transition metal chalcogenides.

Inspired by naturally occurring sulfide minerals, we present a new family of iron-based superconductors. A metastable form of FeS known as the mineral mackinawite forms two-dimensional sheets that can be readily intercalated by various cationic guest species. Under hydrothermal conditions using alkali metal hydroxides, we prepare three different cation and metal hydroxide-intercalated FeS phases including (Li$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$OH)FeS, [(Na$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)(OH)$_2$]FeS, and K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$S$_2$. Upon successful intercalation of the FeS layer, the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ of mackinawite is enhanced from 5 K to 8 K for the (Li$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$OH)$^{δ+}$ intercalate. Layered heterostructures of [(Na$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)(OH)$_2$]FeS resemble the natural mineral tochilinite, which contains an iron square lattice interleaved with a hexagonal hydroxide lattice. Whilst heterostructured [(Na$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)(OH)$_2$]FeS displays long-range magnetic ordering near 15 K, K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$S$_2$ displays short range antiferromagnetism.
