We present a new conceptual model of the Earth's glacial-interglacial cycles, one leading to governing equations for which the vector field has a hyperplane of discontinuities. This work extends the classic Budyko- and Sellers-type conceptual energy balance models of temperature-albedo feedback by removing the standard assumption of planetary symmetry about the equator. The dynamics of separate Northern and Southern Hemisphere ice caps are coupled to an equation representing the annual global mean surface temperature. The system has a discontinuous switching mechanism based on mass balance principles for the Northern Hemisphere ice sheet. We show the associated Filippov system admits a unique nonsmooth and attracting limit cycle that represents the cycling between glacial and interglacial states. Due to the vastly different time scales involved, the model presents a nonsmooth geometric perturbation problem, for which we use ad hoc mathematical techniques to produce the periodic orbit. We find climatic changes in the Northern Hemisphere drive synchronous changes in the Southern Hemisphere, as is observed for the Earth on orbital time scales.

Abstract:
A conceptual model of the Plio-Pleistocene glacial cycles is developed based on the Budyko-Sellers type energy balance model. The model is shown to admit a phenomenon like the Mid-Pleistocene transition, capturing the essence of the albedo and the temperature precipitation feedbacks.

Very strong El Niño events occur sporadically every 10-20 years. The origin of this bursting behavior still remains elusive. Using a simplified 3-dimensional dynamical model of the tropical Pacific climate system, which captures the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) combined with recently developed mathematical tools for fast-slow systems we show that decadal ENSO bursting behavior can be explained as a Mixed Mode Oscillation (MMO), which also predicts a critical threshold for rapid amplitude growth. It is hypothesized that the MMO dynamics of the low-dimensional climate model can be linked to a saddle-focus equilibrium point, which mimics a tropical Pacific Ocean state without ocean circulation.

Conceptual climate models provide an approach to understanding climate processes through a mathematical analysis of an approximation to reality. Recently, these models have also provided interesting examples of nonsmooth dynamical systems. Here we discuss a conceptual model of glacial cycles consisting of a system of three ordinary differential equations defining a discontinuous vector field. We show that this system has a large periodic orbit crossing the discontinuity boundary. This orbit can be interpreted as an intrinsic cycling of the Earth's climate giving rise to alternating glaciations and deglaciations.

In latitude-dependent energy balance models, ice-free and ice-covered conditions form physical boundaries of the system. With carbon dioxide treated as a bifurcation parameter, the resulting bifurcation diagram is nonsmooth with curves of equilibria and boundaries forming corners at points of intersection. Over long time scales, atmospheric carbon dioxide varies dynamically and the nonsmooth diagram becomes a set of quasi-equilibria. {However, when introducing carbon dynamics, care must be taken with the physical boundaries and appropriate boundary motion specified. In this article, we extend an energy balance model to include slowly varying carbon dioxide and develop a nonsmooth framework based on physically relevant boundary dynamics. Within this framework, we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions, as well as invariance of the region of phase space bounded by ice-free and ice-covered states.

Much work has been done on relaxation oscillations and other simple oscillators in conceptual climate models. However, the oscillatory patterns in climate data are often more complicated than what can be described by such mechanisms. This paper examines complex oscillatory behavior in climate data through the lens of mixed-mode oscillations. As a case study, a conceptual climate model with governing equations for global mean temperature, atmospheric carbon, and oceanic carbon is analyzed. The nondimensionalized model is a fast/slow system with one fast variable (corresponding to ice volume) and two slow variables (corresponding to the two carbon stores). Geometric singular perturbation theory is used to demonstrate the existence of a folded node singularity. A parameter regime is found in which (singular) trajectories that pass through the folded node are returned to the singular funnel in the limiting case where $ε= 0$. In this parameter regime, the model has a stable periodic orbit of type $1^s$ for some $s>0$. To our knowledge, it is the first conceptual climate model demonstrated to have the capability to produce an MMO pattern.

A dynamical system derived from a conceptual climate model is investigated. The model is often referred to as Budyko-Sellers type Energy Balance Model (EBM), or in short, the Budyko model. The focus of this study is on the mathematical formulation that further develops the model by capturing the ice line dynamics, and thereby places the Budyko model in dynamical systems framework. The classical Budyko EBM is represented here as an integro-difference equation, then coupled with an ice line equation. The resulting infinite dimensional system is shown to possess an attracting one dimensional invariant manifold. The novel formulation captures solutions that others have previously obtained while also making the formulation and the analysis of the model more precise.
