The azimuthal correlation between the leading jet and the scattered lepton in deep inelastic scattering at HERA

Abstract: The azimuthal correlation angle, $Δφ$, between the scattered lepton and the leading jet in deep inelastic $e^{\pm}p$ scattering at HERA has been studied using data collected with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 318 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $326 \;\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$. A measurement of jet cross sections in the laboratory frame was made… ▽ More The azimuthal correlation angle, $Δφ$, between the scattered lepton and the leading jet in deep inelastic $e^{\pm}p$ scattering at HERA has been studied using data collected with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 318 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $326 \;\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$. A measurement of jet cross sections in the laboratory frame was made in a fiducial region corresponding to photon virtuality $10 \;\mathrm{GeV}^2 < Q^2 < 350 \;\mathrm{GeV}^2$, inelasticity $0.04 < y < 0.7$, outgoing lepton energy $E_e > 10 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, lepton polar angle $140^\circ < θ_e < 180^\circ$, jet transverse momentum $2.5 \;\mathrm{GeV} < p_\mathrm{T,jet} < 30 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, and jet pseudorapidity $-1.5 < η_\mathrm{jet} < 1.8$. Jets were reconstructed using the $k_\mathrm{T}$ algorithm with the radius parameter $R = 1$. The leading jet in an event is defined as the jet that carries the highest $p_\mathrm{T,jet}$. Differential cross sections, $dσ/dΔφ$, were measured as a function of the azimuthal correlation angle in various ranges of leading-jet transverse momentum, photon virtuality and jet multiplicity. Perturbative calculations at $\mathcal{O}(α_{s}^2)$ accuracy successfully describe the data within the fiducial region, although a lower level of agreement is observed near $Δφ\rightarrow π$ for events with high jet multiplicity, due to limitations of the perturbative approach in describing soft phenomena in QCD. The data are equally well described by Monte Carlo predictions that supplement leading-order matrix elements with parton showering. △ Less

Impact of Inclusive Electron Ion Collider Data on Collinear Parton Distributions

The impact on nuclear PDFs is assessed relative to the EPPS21 global fit and is presented in terms of nuclear modification ratios. For all cases studied, significant improvements in the PDF uncertainties are observed for several parton species. The most striking impact occurs for the nuclear PDFs in general and for the region of high Bjorken $x$ in the proton PDFs, particularly for the valence quark distributions. △ Less

Measurement of jet production in deep inelastic scattering and NNLO determination of the strong coupling at ZEUS

In silico high-resolution whole lung model to predict the locally delivered dose of inhaled drugs

It is highly subject-specific as it depends on lung morphology, disease, breathing, and aerosol characteristics. Given these challenges, computational approaches have shown potential, but have so far failed due to fundamental metho… ▽ More The big crux with drug delivery to human lungs is that the delivered dose at the local site of action is unpredictable and very difficult to measure, even a posteriori. It is highly subject-specific as it depends on lung morphology, disease, breathing, and aerosol characteristics. Given these challenges, computational approaches have shown potential, but have so far failed due to fundamental methodical limitations. We present and validate a novel in silico model that enables the subject-specific prediction of local aerosol deposition throughout the entire lung. Its unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution allows to track each aerosol particle anytime during the breathing cycle, anywhere in the complete system of conducting airways and the alveolar region. Predictions are shown to be in excellent agreement with in vivo SPECT/CT data for a healthy human cohort. We further showcase the model's capabilities to represent strong heterogeneities in diseased lungs by studying an IPF patient. Finally, high computational efficiency and automated model generation and calibration ensure readiness to be applied at scale. We envision our method not only to improve inhalation therapies by informing and accelerating all stages of (pre-)clinical drug and device development, but also as a more-than-equivalent alternative to nuclear imaging of the lungs. △ Less

Extraction of the strong coupling with HERA and EIC inclusive data

A potentially world-leading level of precision is achievable when combining simulated inclusive neutral current EIC data with inclusive charged… ▽ More Sensitivity to the strong coupling $α_S(M^2_Z)$ is investigated using existing Deep Inelastic Scattering data from HERA in combination with projected future measurements from the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) in a next-to-next-to-leading order QCD analysis. Back-to-back azimuthal correlations in Z+jet events at high transverse momentum in the TMD parton branching method at next-to-leading order

Abstract: Azimuthal correlations in Z+jet production at large transverse momenta are computed by matching Parton - Branching (PB) TMD parton distributions and showers with NLO calculations via MCatNLO. The predictions are compared with those for dijet production in the same kinematic range. The azimuthal correlations $Δφ$ between the Z boson and the leading jet are steeper compared to those in dijet product… ▽ More Azimuthal correlations in Z+jet production at large transverse momenta are computed by matching Parton - Branching (PB) TMD parton distributions and showers with NLO calculations via MCatNLO. The predictions are compared with those for dijet production in the same kinematic range. The azimuthal correlations $Δφ$ between the Z boson and the leading jet are steeper compared to those in dijet production at transverse momenta ${\cal O}(100)$ GeV, while they become similar for very high transverse momenta ${\cal O}(1000)$ GeV. The different patterns of Z+jet and dijet azimuthal correlations can be used to search for potential {\it factorization - breaking} effects in the back-to-back region, which depend on the different color and spin structure of the final states and their interferences with the initial states. In order to investigate these effects experimentally, we propose to measure the ratio of the distributions in $Δφ$ for Z+jet - and multijet production at low and at high transverse momenta, and compare the results to predictions obtained assuming factorization. We examine the role of theoretical uncertainties by performing variations of the factorization scale, renormalization scale and matching scale. In particular, we present a comparative study of matching scale uncertainties in the cases of PB-TMD and collinear parton showers. △ Less

The different sets of PDFs are presented, evaluated and compared. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Predictions based on the PDFs of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO give an excellent description of the jet-production data used as input. △ Less

The dependence of two-particle correlations on the virtuality of the exchanged photon shows a clear transition from photoproduction to neutral current deep inelastic scattering. For the multiplicities studied, neither the measurements in photoproduction processes nor those in neutral current deep inelastic scattering indicate significant collective behaviour of the kind observed in high-multiplicity hadronic collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Comparisons of PYTHIA predictions with the measurements in photoproduction strongly indicate the presence of multiparton interactions from hadronic fluctuations of the exchanged photon. △ Less

Abstract: Charm production in charged current deep inelastic scattering has been measured for the first time in $e^{\pm}p$ collisions, using data collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $358 pb^{-1}$. Impact of low-$x$ resummation on QCD analysis of HERA data

Evidence of quasi-partonic higher-twist effects in deep inelastic scattering at HERA at moderate $Q^2$

Abstract: The combined HERA data for the inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) cross sections for the momentum transfer $Q^2 > 1$ GeV$^2$ are fitted within the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) framework at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy, complemented by a QCD-inspired parameterisation of twist 4 corrections. A modified form of the input pa… ▽ More The combined HERA data for the inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) cross sections for the momentum transfer $Q^2 > 1$ GeV$^2$ are fitted within the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) framework at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy, complemented by a QCD-inspired parameterisation of twist 4 corrections. A modified form of the input parton density functions is also included, motivated by parton saturation mechanism at small Bjorken $x$ and at a low scale. These modifications lead to a significant improvement of the data description in the region of low $Q^2$. For the whole data sample, the new benchmark NNLO DGLAP fit yields $χ^2$ / d.o.f. $\simeq 1.2$ to be compared to 1.5 resulting from the standard NNLO DGLAP fit. We discuss the results in the context of the parton saturation picture and describe the impact of the higher-twist corrections on the derived parton density functions. The resulting description of the longitudinal proton structure function $F_L$ is consistent with the HERA data. Our estimates of higher-twist contributions to the proton structure functions are comparable to the leading-twist contributions at low $Q^2 \simeq 2$ GeV$^2$ and $x \simeq 10^{-5}$. The $x$-dependence of the twist 4 corrections obtained from the best fit is consistent with the leading twist 4 quasi-partonic operators, corresponding to an exchange of four interacting gluons in the $t$-channel. △ Less

Investigation into the limits of perturbation theory at low Q^2 using HERA deep inelastic scattering data

Abstract: A phenomenological study of the final combined HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) has been performed. The data are presented and investigated for a kinematic range extending from values of the four-momentum transfer, $Q^2$, above 10$^4$ GeV$^2$ down to the lowest values observable at HERA of $Q^2$ = 0.045 GeV$^2$ and Bjorken $x$, $x_{\rm Bj}$ = 6 $\cdot$ 10$^{-7}$. The data are… ▽ More A phenomenological study of the final combined HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) has been performed. The data are presented and investigated for a kinematic range extending from values of the four-momentum transfer, $Q^2$, above 10$^4$ GeV$^2$ down to the lowest values observable at HERA of $Q^2$ = 0.045 GeV$^2$ and Bjorken $x$, $x_{\rm Bj}$ = 6 $\cdot$ 10$^{-7}$. The data are well described by fits based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD) using collinear factorisation and evolution of the parton densities encompassed in the DGLAP formalism from the highest $Q^2$ down to $Q^2$ of a few GeV$^2$. The Regge formalism can describe the data up to $Q^2 \approx$ 0.65 GeV$^2$. The complete data set can be described by a new fit using the ALLM parameterisation. However, when searching for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) contributions in the data one should take into account the possibility that the PDF set may already have been biased by partially or… ▽ More The high-precision HERA data can be used as an input to a QCD analysis within the DGLAP formalism to obtain the detailed description of the proton structure in terms of the parton distribution functions (PDFs). However, when searching for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) contributions in the data one should take into account the possibility that the PDF set may already have been biased by partially or totally absorbing previously unrecognised new physics contributions. The ZEUS Collaboration has proposed a new approach to the BSM analysis of the inclusive $ep$ data based on the simultaneous QCD fits of parton distribution functions together with contributions of new physics processes. Unfortunately, limit setting procedure in the frequentist approach is very time consuming in this method, as full QCD analysis has to be repeated for numerous data replicas. We describe a simplified approach, based on the Taylor expansion of the cross section predictions in terms of PDF parameters, which allowed us to reduce the calculation time for the BSM limits by almost two orders of magnitude. △ Less

Abstract: A simultaneous fit of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and electroweak parameters to HERA data on deep inelastic scattering is presented. Thes… ▽ More HERAFitter is an open-source package that provides a framework for the determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton and for many different kinds of analyses in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). It encodes results from a wide range of experimental measurements in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering and proton-proton (proton-antiproton) collisions at hadron colliders. These are complemented with a variety of theoretical options for calculating PDF-dependent cross section predictions corresponding to the measurements. The framework covers a large number of the existing methods and schemes used for PDF determination. The data and theoretical predictions are brought together through numerous methodological options for carrying out PDF fits and plotting tools to help visualise the results. While primarily based on the approach of collinear factorisation, HERAFitter also provides facilities for fits of dipole models and transverse-momentum dependent PDFs. Abstract: Measurements of neutral current cross sections for deep inelastic scattering in e+p collisions at HERA with a longitudinally polarised positron beam are presented. The measurements were performed separately for positively and negatively polarised positron beams. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of 135.5 pb-1 collected with the ZEUS detector in 2006 and 2007 at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The structure functions F3 and F3(gamma)Z were determined by combining the e+p results presented in this paper with previously published e-p neutral current results. The asymmetry parameter A+ is used to demonstrate the parity violation predicted in electroweak interactions. The measurements are well described by the predictions of the Standard Model. △ Less

An inter-experimental study group on HEP data preservation and long-term analysis was convened as a panel of the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA). The group was formed by large collider-based experiments and investigated the technical and organisational aspects of HEP data preservation. An intermediate report was released in November 2009 addressing the general issues of data preservation in HEP. This paper includes and extends the intermediate report. It provides an analysis of the research case for data preservation and a detailed description of the various projects at experiment, laboratory and international levels. In addition, the paper provides a concrete proposal for an international organisation in charge of the data management and policies in high-energy physics. △ Less

Influence of beam related background on ILD reconstruction
