Bulk Scandium trifluoride ($\mathrm{ScF_3}$) is known for a pronounced negative thermal expansion (NTE) over a wide range of temperature, from $10~\mathrm{K}~\text{to}~ 1100~\mathrm{K}$. The structure of $\mathrm{ScF_3}$ can be described as an $\mathrm{ABX_3}$ perovskite with an empty A-site and a space group of Pm-3m. Growing thin films of $\mathrm{ScF_3}$ allows for tuning the lattice constant, the thermal expansion, and the construction of devices based upon differential thermal expansion. We have investigated the growth of $\mathrm{ScF_3}$ films on oxide and fluoride substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) This letter describes the successful growth recipe for producing high quality epitaxial $\mathrm{ScF_3}$ thin films on positive thermal expansion (PTE) lithium fluoride ($\mathrm{LiF}$) substrates, at substrate temperature, $350^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ with a laser repetition rate of $1~\mathrm{Hz}$, with an energy per pulse of $600~\mathrm{mJ}$, under a vacuum of $1.5\times 10^{-6}~ \mathrm{torr}$, for a growth time of $6$ hours. However, even for films with excellent epitaxy and sharp peaks along the principal axes, diffraction peaks from certain crystallographic directions are extremely broad, with the example of ($104$) reflections, in this work. We attribute this broadening to disorder in the $\mathrm{F_6}$ octahedral rotations that occur as an attempt to accommodate the large temperature-induced lattice mismatch that results in cooling from the growth temperature for this system of a NTE film mated to a PTE substrate.

We present a combined neutron diffraction and high field muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) study of the magnetically ordered and superconducting phases of the high-temperature superconductor La$_{1.94}$Sr$_{0.06}$CuO$_{4+y}$ ($T_{\rm c} = 37.5(2)$~K) in a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ planes. We observe a linear field-dependence of the intensity of the neutron diffraction peak that reflects the modulated antiferromagnetic stripe order. The magnetic volume fraction extracted from $μ$SR data likewise increases linearly with applied magnetic field. The combination of these two observations allows us to unambiguously conclude that stripe-ordered regions grow in an applied field, whereas the stripe-ordered magnetic moment itself is field-independent. This contrasts with earlier suggestions that the field-induced neutron diffraction intensity in La-based cuprates is due to an increase in the ordered moment. We discuss a microscopic picture that is capable of reconciling these conflicting viewpoints.

Considering the differences in electronic structure and local environment between the oxygen- and strontium-doped compounds with similar $T_\text{c}$, we rule out a connection between the phonon anomaly and structural instabilities related to the specific dopant type. We interpret the phonon anomaly as a signature of correlated charge fluctuations possibly connected to stripes.

We present high energy X-ray diffraction studies on the structural phases of an optimal high-$T_c$ superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4+y}$ tailored by co-hole-do**. This is specifically done by varying the content of two very different chemical species, Sr and O, respectively, in order to study the influence of each. A superstructure known as staging is observed in all samples, with the staging number $n$ increasing for higher Sr do**s $x$. We find that the staging phases emerge abruptly with temperature, and can be described as a second order phase transition with transition temperatures slightly depending on the Sr do**. The Sr appears to correlate the interstitial oxygen in a way that stabilises the reproducibility of the staging phase both in terms of staging period and volume fraction in a specific sample. The structural details as investigated in this letter appear to have no direct bearing on the electronic phase separation previously observed in the same samples. This provides new evidence that the electronic phase separation is determined by the overall hole concentration rather than specific Sr/O content and concommittant structural details.

In order to unambiguously identify the source of magnetism reported in recent studies of the Co-Te system, two sets of high-quality, epitaxial CoTe$_x$ films (thickness $\simeq$ 300 nm) were prepared by pulse laser deposition (PLD). X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that all of the films are epitaxial along the [001] direction and have the hexagonal NiAs structure. There is no indication of any second phase metallic Co peaks (either $fcc$ or $hcp$) in the XRD patterns. The two sets of CoTe$_x$ films were grown on various substrates with PLD targets having Co:Te in the atomic ratio of 50:50 and 35:65. From the measured lattice parameters $c = 5.396 Å$ for the former and $c = 5.402Å$ for the latter, the compositions CoTe$_{1.71}$ (63.1% Te) and CoTe$_{1.76}$ (63.8% Te), respectively, are assigned to the principal phase. Although XRD shows no trace of metallic Co second phase, the magnetic measurements do show a ferromagnetic contribution for both sets of films with the saturation magnetization values for the CoTe$_{1.71}$ films being approximately four times the values for the CoTe$_{1.76}$ films. $^{59}$Co spin-echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) clearly shows the existence of metallic Co inclusions in the films. The source of weak ferromagnetism reported in several recent studies is due to the presence of metallic Co, since the stoichiometric composition "CoTe" does not exist.

A nematic order in stripe-ordered cuprates was recently identified with (001) reflection at resonant energies associated with the in-plane states. However, whether this resonant reflection is ubiquitous among all 214 cuprates is still unknown. Here we report a Resonant soft X-ray Scattering (RXS) measurement on two La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4+y}$ crystals. Charge order was found in La$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$ with a total hole concentration near 0.125/Cu but no measurable (001) peak at any resonance, while in a La$_{1.94}$Sr$_{0.06}$CuO$_{4+y}$ sample near 0.16/Cu a (001) peak resonant was identified to be consistent with the presence of LTT tilting. The lack of such a (001) peak in a compound with stripe-like charge order raises questions about nematicity and the origin of the scattering feature.

Resonant soft X-ray scattering was used to determine the presence of more subtle orderings not detected in standard structural analyses. By tuning to specific Co absorption edges, arrangements particular to the electronic states of those elements are enhanced. We have discovered an ordering commensurate to the lattice at the ($\frac{1}{4}~\frac{1}{4}~\frac{1}{4}$) position. Incommensurate peaks near this position were also observed. The intensity of these peaks depends on the oxygen concentration of the sample, and can be suppressed at temperatures above 320 K. Regular orderings of charge density which closely match the underlying lattice may help to explain the observed propensity for SrCoO$_{3-y}$ (0 $\leq$ y $\leq\frac{1}{2}$) to stabilize at particular phases.

We present detailed neutron scattering studies of the static and dynamic stripes in an optimally doped high-temperature superconductor, La$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$. We find that the dynamic stripes do not disperse towards the static stripes in the limit of vanishing energy transfer. We conclude that the dynamic stripes observed in neutron scattering experiments are not the Goldstone modes associated with the broken symmetry of the simultaneously observed static stripes, but rather that the signals originate from different domains in the sample. These domains may be related by structural twinning, or may be entirely different phases, where the static stripes in one phase are pinned versions of the dynamic stripes in the other. Our results explain earlier observations of unusual dispersions in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.07$) and La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.095$). Our findings are relevant for all compounds exhibiting magnetic stripes, and may thus be a vital part in unveiling the nature of high temperature superconductivity.

Using muon spin rotation and neutron scattering experiments, we have established that the two transitions represent separate, spatially distinct magnetic phases that coexist in a two-phase equilibrium mixture. The two phases most likely represent areas of the sample with different effective valence charge density. Further, the phases exist over regions with a length scale intermediate between nanoscale charge inhomogeneity and systems such as manganites or super-oxygenated cuprates with large length scale phase separation.

We report on the local electronic structure of oxygen incorporated FeTe and FeSe films and how this relates to superconductivity observed in these films. In the case of FeTe, intially grown films are measured to be non-superconducting, but become superconducting following oxygen incorporation. In FeSe the opposite happens, initially grown films are measured to be superconducting, but experience a quenching of superconductivity following oxygen incorporation. Total Fluorescence Yield (TFY) X-ray absorption experiments show that oxygen incorporation changes the initial Fe valence state in both the initially grown FeTe and FeSe films to mainly Fe3+ in the oxygen incorporated films. In contrast we observe that while Te moves to a mixed Te0/Te4+ valence state, the Se always remains Se0. This work highlights how different responses of the electronic structure by the respective chalcogenides to oxidation could be related to the mechanisms which are inducing superconductivity in FeTe and quenching superconductivity in FeSe.

The lattice mismatch strain in these compounds affects both the bond lengths and the bond angles, though the larger effect on the bandwidth is due to the bond length changes. The popular double exchange model for ferromagnetism in these compounds provides a correct qualitative description of the changes in Curie temperature $T_C$, but quantitatively underestimates the changes. A microscopic model for ferromagnetism that provides a much stronger dependence on the structural distortions is needed.

We have successfully grown epitaxial La$_{1.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$NiO$_4$ films with a small crystalline mosaic using pulsed laser deposition. With synchrotron radiation, the x-ray diffraction peaks associated with charge stripes have been successfully observed for relatively thick films. Anomalies due to the charge-ordering transition have been examined using four-point probe resistivity measurements. X-ray scattering provides direct evidence for suppression of the stripe phase in thin samples; the phase disappears for film thicknesses $\leqslant$ 2600 ~Å. The suppression appears to be a result of shrinking the stripe phase domains. This may reflect the stripe phase progressing from nematic to isotropic.

We have studied the magnetic characteristics of a series of super-oxygenated La2-xSrxCuO4+y samples. As shown in previous work, these samples spontaneously phase separate into an oxygen rich superconducting phase with a TC near 40 K and an oxygen poor magnetic phase that also orders near 40 K. All samples studied are highly magnetically reversible even to low temperatures. Although the internal magnetic regions of these samples might be expected to act as pinning sites, our present study shows that they do not favor flux pinning. Flux pinning requires a matching condition between the defect and the superconducting coherence length. Thus, our results imply that the magnetic regions are too large to act as pinning centers. This also implies that the much greater flux pinning in typical La2-xSrxCuO4 materials is the result of nanoscale inhomogeneities that grow to become the large magnetic regions in the super-oxygenated materials. The superconducting regions of the phase separated materials are in that sense cleaner and more homogenous than in the typical cuprate superconductor.

The ferromagnetic properties of epitaxial La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$ thin films have been studied. The magnetic transition is affected by both strain and finite thickness. We have used a series of films of different thickness and on different substrates in order to quantitatively determine the change in Curie temperature contributed by each effect. The phase diagram of T$_C$ versus in-plane strain suggests that the ferromagnetic transition temperature is suppressed by tensile strain and enhanced by compressive strain. The general method of separating strain and finite thickness effects should be applicable to any ordering phase transition in thin films.

We present an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of a Mott-Hubbard-type bismuth cobaltate system across a metal-insulator transition. By varying the amount of Pb substitution, and by do** with Sr or Ba cation, a range of insulating to metallic properties is obtained. We observe a systematic change in the spectral weight of the coherent and incoherent parts, accompanied by an energy shift of the incoherent part. The band dispersion also shows the emergence of a weakly dispersing state at the Fermi energy with increasing conductivity. These changes correspond with the changes in the temperature-dependent resistivity behavior. We address the nature of the coherent-incoherent parts in relation to the peak-dip-hump feature seen in cuprates superconductors.

We have investigated the out-of-plane lattice relaxation related to the ferroelectric transitions in epitaxial BaTiO$_3$ (BTO) films using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Under either compressive strain or tensile strain, there is evidence for two structural phase transitions as a function of temperature. The transition temperature $T_C$ is a strong function of strain, which can be as much as 100 K above the corresponding $T_C$ in bulk. Under compressive strain, the tetragonality of BTO unit cell implies that the polarization of the first ferroelectric phase is out-of-plane, while under tensile strain, the polarization is in-plane. The transitions at lower temperature may correspond to the $aa\to r$ or $c\to r$ transitions, following the notations by Pertsev \textit{et al}. The orientations of the domains are consistent with theoretical predictions.

SrTiO$_3$ thin films were used as a model system to study the effects of strain and epitaxial constraint on structural phase transitions of perovskite films. The basic phenomena revealed will apply to a variety of important structural transitions including the ferroelectric transition. Highly strained SrTiO$_3$ films were grown on different substrates, providing both compressive and tensile strain. The measured strain-temperature phase diagram is qualitatively consistent with theory, however the increase in the phase transition temperature is much larger than predicted. Due to the epitaxial strain and substrate clam**, the SrTiO$_3$ lattice is tetragonal at all temperatures. The phase transitions involve only changes in internal symmetry. The low temperature phase under tensile strain has a unique structure with orthorhombic $Cmcm$ space group but a tetragonal lattice, an interesting consequence of epitaxial constraint.

Three different film systems have been systematically investigated to understand the effects of strain and substrate constraint on the phase transitions of perovskite films. In SrTiO$_3$ films, the phase transition temperature T$_C$ was determined by monitoring the superlattice peaks associated with rotations of TiO$_6$ octahedra. It is found that T$_C$ depends on both SrTiO$_3$ film thickness and SrRuO$_3$ buffer layer thickness. However, lattice parameter measurements showed no sign of the phase transitions, indicating that the tetragonality of the SrTiO$_3$ unit cells was no longer a good order parameter. This signals a change in the nature of this phase transition, the internal degree of freedom is decoupled from the external degree of freedom. The phase transitions occur even without lattice relaxation through domain formation. In NdNiO$_3$ thin films, it is found that the in-plane lattice parameters were clamped by the substrate, while out-of-plane lattice constant varied to accommodate the volume change across the phase transition. This shows that substrate constraint is an important parameter for epitaxial film systems, and is responsible for the suppression of external structural change in SrTiO$_3$ and NdNiO$_3$ films. However, in SrRuO$_3$ films we observed domain formation at elevated temperature through x-ray reciprocal space map**. This indicated that internal strain energy within films also played an important role, and may dominate in some film systems. The final strain states within epitaxial films were the result of competition between multiple mechanisms and may not be described by a single parameter.

We have studied the cubic to tetragonal phase transition in epitaxial SrTiO$_3$ films under various biaxial strain conditions using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Measuring the superlattice peak associated with TiO$_6$ octahedra rotation in the low temperature tetragonal phase indicates the presence of a phase transition whose critical temperature is a strong function of strain, with T$_C$ as much as 50K above the corresponding bulk temperature. Surprisingly, the lattice constants evolve smoothly through the transition with no indication of a phase change. This signals an important change in the nature of the phase transition due to the epitaxy strain and substrate clam** effect. The internal degrees of freedom (TiO$_6$ rotations) have become uncoupled from the overall lattice shape.

The temperature dependent spectra near the ($π,0$) point show the presence of the sharp peak well above $T_{c}$. From the nodal direction, we make comparison of the self-energy with the optimally doped and underdoped cuprates, and the Mo(110) surface state. We show that this OD cuprate appears to have properties that approach that of the Mo. Further analysis shows that the OD has a more $k$-independent lineshape at the Fermi surface than the lower-doped cuprates. This allows for a realistic comparison of the nodal lifetime values to the experimental resistivity measurements via Boltzmann transport formulation. All these observations point to the validity of the quasiparticle picture for the OD even in the normal state within a certain energy and momentum range.

The mean-field ground state is degenerate, since the inter-subsystem interactions are geometrically frustrated. Magnetic neutron scattering experiments show that quantum fluctuations lift the degeneracy and cause a 2D Ising ordering of the Cu_{II} subsystem. Due to quantum fluctuations a dramatic increase of the Cu_I out-of-plane spin-wave gap is also observed. The temperature dependence and the dispersion of the spin-wave energy are quantitatively explained by spin-wave calculations which include quantum fluctuations explicitly. The values for the nearest-neighbor superexchange interactions between the Cu_I and Cu_{II} ions and between the Cu_{II} ions are determined experimentally to be J_{I-II} = -10(2)meV and J_{II}= 10.5(5)meV, respectively. Due to its small exchange interaction, J_{II}, the 2D dispersion of the Cu_{II} SLQHA can be measured over the whole Brillouin zone with thermal neutrons, and a novel dispersion at the zone boundary, predicted by theory, is confirmed. The instantaneous magnetic correlation length of the Cu_{II} SLQHA is obtained up to a very high temperature, T/J_{II}\approx 0.75. This result is compared with several theoretical predictions as well as recent experiments on the S=1/2 SLQHA.

We have carried out a neutron scattering study of the instantaneous spin-spin correlations in La2CuO4 (T_N = 325 K) over the temperature range 337 K to 824 K. Incident neutron energies varying from 14.7 meV to 115 meV have been employed in order to guarantee that the energy integration is carried out properly. The results so-obtained for the spin correlation length as a function of temperature when expressed in reduced units agree quantitatively both with previous results for the two dimensional (2D) tetragonal material Sr2CuO2Cl2 and with quantum Monte Carlo results for the nearest neighbor square lattice S=1/2 Heisenberg model. All of the experimental and numerical results for the correlation length are well described without any adjustable parameters by the behavior predicted for the quantum non-linear sigma model in the low temperature renormalized classical regime. The amplitude, on the other hand, deviates subtly from the predicted low temperature behavior. These results are discussed in the context of recent theory for the 2D quantum Heisenberg model.

The measured correlation lengths are quantitatively described, with no adjustable parameters, by high-temperature series expansion results and by a theory based on the quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation. Conversely, we find that the data, which cover the range from about 1 to 50 lattice constants, are outside of the regime corresponding to renormalized classical behavior of the quantum non-linear sigma model. In addition, we observe a crossover from Heisenberg to Ising critical behavior near the Neel temperature; this crossover is well described by a mean-field model with no adjustable parameters.

We explore the success of various versions of the one-band t-J model in explaining the full spectral functions found in angle-resolved photoemission spectra for the prototypical, quasi two-dimensional, tetragonal, antiferromagnetic insulator $Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2$. After presenting arguments justifying our extraction of $A(k,ω)$ from the experimental data, we rely on exact-diagonalization results from studies of a square 32-site lattice, the largest cluster for which such information is presently available, to perform this comparison. Our work leads us to believe that (i) a one-band model that includes hop** out to third-nearest neighbours, as well three-site, spin-dependent hop**, can indeed explain not only the dispersion relation, but also the quasiparticle lifetimes -- only in the neighbourhood of $k = (π/2,0)$ do we find disagreement; (ii) an energy-dependent broadening function, $Γ(E) = Γ_0 + A E$, is important in accounting for the incoherent contributions to the spectral functions.

A high temperature electrochemical oxidation process has been used to produce large single crystals of $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$ suitable for neutron scattering experiments. Below room temperature the oxygen-rich phases have structural superlattice scattering peaks which indicate new periodicities ranging from 2 to 6.6 layers perpendicular to the copper oxide planes. A model structure originally proposed for $La_2NiO_{4 + δ}$ can account for the superlattice peaks as a result of anti-phase domain boundaries between different tilt directions of the CuO$_6$ octahedra. Within this model, the changes in CuO$_6$ tilt directions are induced by segregated layers of interstitial oxygen which order in a manner similar to intercalants in graphite. This structural model thus clarifies previous work and establishes $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$ as a unique lamellar superconducting system with annealed disorder.
